¹ When Jesus had finished these discourses he departed from Galilee and came to the borders of Judea, on the bank of the Jordan. ² And great multitudes followed him, and he healed them there. ³ And the Pharisees came to him, and trying him said, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every fault? ⁴ In reply to which he said to them, "Have you not read that the Creator at the beginning made them a male and a female?" ⁵ Moreover he said, "For this cause a man is to leave his father and his mother, and cleave to his wife, and they two shall be one flesh; ⁶ so that they are no longer two but one flesh." Therefore what God hath conjoined, let not man separate. ⁷ They say to him, Why then did Moses command to give a bill of divorce and dismiss her? ⁸ He saith to them, Because of your intractable disposition Moses permitted you to put away your wives; but it was not so from the beginning. ⁹ Now I say to you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for whoredom and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and he who marrieth her who was put away committeth adultery. ¹⁰ His disciples say to him, If such be the case between the husband and wife, it is not expedient to marry. ¹¹ Whereupon he said to them, All men cannot admit this inference. But with respect to them to whom it is granted ¹² [for there are some who have been eunuchs from their birth, and some have been made eunuchs by men, and there are some who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven] let him admit it, who can admit it. ¹³ Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray for them; and his disciples rebuked them. ¹⁴ Whereupon Jesus said, Let the children alone, and do not hinder them to come to me; for of such is the kingdom of the heavens. ¹⁵ And when he had laid his hands on them he departed thence. ¹⁶ And behold there came one who said to him, Good teacher, what good thing shall I do, that I may have an everlasting life? ¹⁷ In reply to which Jesus said to him, Why callest thou me good? There is none good but God only. But if thou desirest to enter into that life, keep the commandments. ¹⁸ He saith to him, Which? And Jesus said, These: Thou shalt not commit murder; Thou shalt not commit adultery; Thou shalt not steal; Thou shall not bear false witness; ¹⁹ Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. ²⁰ The youth said to him, All these I have kept from my childhood. What do I yet lack? ²¹ Jesus said to him, If thou wishest to be perfect, go, sell thy estate, and give to the poor; and thou shalt have treasure in heaven. Then come and follow me. ²² Upon hearing this word, the youth went away sorrowful; for he had great possessions. ²³ Thereupon Jesus said to his disciples, Verily I say to you, With difficulty will a rich man enter the kingdom of heaven. ²⁴ Again I say to you, It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. ²⁵ When his disciples heard this they were greatly astonished and said, Who then can be saved? ²⁶ Thereupon Jesus looking earnestly at them said, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible. ²⁷ Then Peter addressing him said, Behold we have left all and followed thee, what then shall we have? ²⁸ Thereupon Jesus said to him, Verily I say to you, With respect to you who have followed me, at the renovation, when the son of man shall sit on the throne of his glory, you also shall sit on twelve thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. ²⁹ And everyone who hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or fields for the sake of my name, shall receive an hundred fold compensation. He shall indeed inherit an everlasting life. ³⁰ But many will be first who are last; and last, who are first.

¹ Having departed thence, he cometh to the borders of Judea, through the plain of the Jordan. And multitudes again resort to him, and he, as usual, again taught them. ² And the Pharisees came, and with a view to try him, asked him, is it lawful for a man to put away his wife. ³ Whereupon he, in reply, said to them, What hath Moses commanded you? ⁴ And they said, Moses permitted to write a bill of divorce and to put away. ⁵ In answer to this, Jesus said to them, Because of your intractable disposition, Moses wrote this precept for you. ⁶ But from the beginning of the creation God made them a male and a female. ⁷ For this cause a man is to leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife. ⁸ And they two shall be one flesh. So that they are no longer two, but one flesh. ⁹ Therefore what God hath conjoined, let not man separate. ¹⁰ And when he was in the house, his disciples asked him again concerning this matter. ¹¹ Whereupon he saith to them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her. ¹² And if a woman put away her husband, and marry another, she committeth adultery.

⁴⁰ and went again to the bank of the Jordan; to the place where John baptized at first, and abode there.

²³ Then Jesus went through all Galilee teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the reign and curing every disease, and every malady among the people. ²⁴ And the fame of him spread through all Syria; and they brought to him all their sick, seized and tormented with various distempers"demoniacs, and lunatics and paralytics, and he cured them. ²⁵ And great multitudes followed him from Galilee, and Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea, and from the banks of the Jordan.

³⁵ Then Jesus took a circuit through all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the reign, and healing every disease and every malady among the people. ³⁶ And seeing the multitudes, he had compassion on them because they were fainty and forlorn, like sheep without a shepherd.

¹⁵ But Jesus, knowing this, withdrew from that place; and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all;

³⁵ And the men of that place, knowing him, sent to all the country around, and they brought to him all that were sick, ³⁶ and intreated him that they might only touch the tuft of his mantle. And as many as touched were perfectly cured.

³⁰ and great multitudes flocked to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the dumb, the cripple and many others, whom they laid at the feet of Jesus, and he healed them; ³¹ insomuch that the people beheld with amaze the dumb speaking, the cripple sound, the lame walking, and the blind seeing, and they glorified the God of Israel.

⁵⁵ And, running through the whole country around, they began to bring the sick on beds, to every place where they heard he was. ⁵⁶ And wherever he entered towns, or cities, or villages, they laid the sick in the streets, and begged that they might but touch the tuft of his mantle. And as many as touched were cured.

¹⁴ And do you say, Why not? Because God was a witness between thee and the wife of thy youth whom thou hast forsaken, though she was thy companion and the wife of thy covenant. ¹⁵ Now did not he who had the residue of spirit, do right? Yet you have said, "What else but a seed doth God require?" But keep this in your mind, "Thou must not forsake the wife of thy youth." ¹⁶ [a] "But if thou having hated shalt put away saith the Lord God of Israel." [b] And will impiety, saith the Lord Almighty, put a cloak over thy lusts? Therefore keep this in your mind, "You must not forsake."

³¹ It hath also been said, Whosoever would put away his wife, let him give her a bill of divorce. ³² But I say to you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except for whoredom, causeth her to commit adultery: and whoever shall marry her who is put away, committeth adultery.

¹ And the Pharisees and the Sadducees having come thither with a view to try him, desired that he would show them a sign from heaven.

¹⁶ So they send to him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Teacher, We know that thou art true and teachest the way of God truly, and carest for no one. For thou respectest not the persons of men. ¹⁷ Tell us therefore what thou thinkest. Is it lawful to pay tribute to Caesar, or not? ¹⁸ But Jesus, knowing their malice, said, Hypocrites! Why do ye try me?

³⁵ And one of them, an expounder of the law, with a view to 36 try him, asked him this question,

² And the Pharisees came, and with a view to try him, asked him, is it lawful for a man to put away his wife.

¹³ and send to him some of the Pharisees, and the Herodians, to entrap him with a speech.

¹⁵ Should we give? Or should we not give? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, Why do ye try me? Bring me a deniar, that I may see it.

⁵³ Now while he was saying these things to them, the Scribes and the Pharisees took occasion to urge him vehemently, and provoke him to speak of many things, ⁵⁴ laying snares for him, and seeking to catch something from his mouth, that they might accuse him;

⁶ This they said to try him, that they might have matter for accusing him. Thereupon Jesus stooped down and wrote with his finger on the ground.

⁹ Where your fathers tried me; they proved me, though they saw my works. Forty years.

²⁷ So God made man. After an image of God he made him. A male and a female he made them.

¹⁸ Then the Lord God said, "It is not good that the man should be alone: let us make for him a helper correspondent to himself."

²³ And Adam said, "This now is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh, let her be called woman." Because she was taken out of her man,

² A male and a female he made them, and blessed them. And he called his name Adam on the day he made them.

¹⁵ Now did not he who had the residue of spirit, do right? Yet you have said, "What else but a seed doth God require?" But keep this in your mind, "Thou must not forsake the wife of thy youth."

³ Whereupon he said to them, Have you not read, what David did when he was hungry, and they who were with him?

⁶ So the disciples went, and having done as Jesus commanded them,

⁴² Jesus saith to them, Have you never read in the scriptures, "The stone which the builders rejected was the very one for the head of the corner. This [salvation] was from the Lord, and it is wonderful in our eyes."

³¹ But in respect to the revival of the dead. Have you not read what was spoken to you: by God, saying,

²⁵ And he said to them, Did you never read what David did when he was in a strait; and he and his company were hungry?

¹⁰ Have you never read this portion of scripture, "The stone which the builders rejected, was the very one for the head of the corner.

²⁶ Now with respect to the dead, that they are raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, how God spake in the bush to him, saying, "I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaak, and the God of Jacob.

³ Thereupon Jesus addressing them, said, Have you never read what David did, when he and his attendants were hungry?

²⁶ Whereupon Jesus said to him, What is written in the law? How readest thou?

²¹ Then God brought an ecstasy upon Adam and caused him to sleep, and took one of his ribs and filled up flesh instead thereof. ²² And God built up the rib, which he took from Adam, into a woman, and brought her to Adam. ²³ And Adam said, "This now is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh, let her be called woman." Because she was taken out of her man, ²⁴ therefore a man is to leave his father and his mother and cleave to his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

³ And having applied himself to gain the affections of Deina the daughter of Jacob, for he loved the virgin, and having spoken to her according to the wishes of the virgin,

⁴ But as for you who adhered to the Lord your God, you are all alive this day.

²⁰ Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God, and serve him, and cleave to him, and swear by his name.

²² For it shall come to pass, that if you hearken diligently to all these commands, which I this day enjoin you to do; to love the Lord our God, and to walk in all his ways, and to cleave to him,

²⁶ I mourn for thee, my brother Jonathan, To me thou wast very lovely. Thy love for me was wonderful; Far surpassing the love of women.

² To those of the nations concerning which the Lord had said to the Israelites, You shall not go in unto them nor shall they come in unto you, lest they turn your hearts after their idols; to these Solomon was attached by love:

¹⁰ Hear, daughter, and behold, and incline thine ear, and forget thy people and thy father's house.

⁸ My soul hath kept close to thee: thy right hand hath supported me.

⁵ In answer to this, Jesus said to them, Because of your intractable disposition, Moses wrote this precept for you. ⁶ But from the beginning of the creation God made them a male and a female. ⁷ For this cause a man is to leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife. ⁸ And they two shall be one flesh. So that they are no longer two, but one flesh. ⁹ Therefore what God hath conjoined, let not man separate.

⁹ Let love be unfeigned: abhor what is evil; adhere closely to what is good;

¹⁶ Do you not know that he who is joined to the harlot is one body with her? For the scripture saith, "They two shall be one flesh."

² but to avoid fornication let every man have his own wife; and every woman her own husband.

⁴ The wife hath not the power over her own body; but the husband: And in like manner the husband hath not the power over his own body; but the wife.

³¹ Instead of this, "a man will leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife, and they two will be one flesh,"

¹⁷ My son, let not evil counsel, who hath forsaken the discipline of youth and hath forgotten the divine covenant, take hold of thee.

¹⁴ And do you say, Why not? Because God was a witness between thee and the wife of thy youth whom thou hast forsaken, though she was thy companion and the wife of thy covenant.

⁹ Therefore what God hath conjoined, let not man separate.

² For the married woman is by law bound to her husband while he is alive. But if the husband die, a stop is put to the operation of the law of the husband.

¹⁰ And to them who are married I give this injunction; not I but the Lord: That a wife separate not herself from her husband; ¹¹ but if she hath actually separated, let her continue unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband; and that a husband put not away a wife. ¹² And to the rest I say, not the Lord; if any brother hath an unbelieving wife, and she is well satisfied to live with him, let him not divorce her: ¹³ and if any woman hath an unbelieving husband, and he is well satisfied to live with her, let her not divorce him. ¹⁴ For the unbelieving husband is hallowed by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is hallowed by the husband; else your children would be unclean; whereas they are now holy.

²⁸ In the same manner husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loveth his wife, loveth himself.

⁴ Let marriage be held in esteem by all, and its bed be undefiled: for whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.

¹ If any one hath taken a wife, and cohabited with her, and it should happen that she hath not found favour in his sight, because he hath found something unseemly in her, he may write her a bill of divorce, and put it into her hands, and send her away from his house. ² And having gone away, she may become another man's wife. ³ But if her last husband hate her, and write her a bill of divorce and put it in her hands and send her away from his house; or if her last husband, who hath taken her to wife, die; ⁴ her former husband, who put her away, shall not be at liberty to return and take her again to wife; for it is an abomination to the Lord thy God; and you must not defile the land, which the Lord thy God giveth thee for a possession.

¹ Thus saith the Lord, Of what sort was the bill of your mother's divorce with which I divorced her? Or to what creditor have I sold you? Behold you were sold for your transgressions; and for your iniquities I divorced your mother.

⁸ and I saw that when for all the whoredoms which Israel had committed and in which she had been caught, I had put her away and given her a bill of divorce in her hands, the treacherous Juda was not terrified, but went and committed the like herself.

¹⁶ [a] "But if thou having hated shalt put away saith the Lord God of Israel." [b] And will impiety, saith the Lord Almighty, put a cloak over thy lusts? Therefore keep this in your mind, "You must not forsake."

¹⁹ and Joseph her husband, being a just man and not willing to expose her, determined to divorce her privately;

³¹ It hath also been said, Whosoever would put away his wife, let him give her a bill of divorce.

⁴ And they said, Moses permitted to write a bill of divorce and to put away.

²⁴ therefore a man is to leave his father and his mother and cleave to his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

⁷ And Noe and his sons and his wife and his sons' wives with him went into the ark on account of the water of the deluge.

¹² and made their heart disobedient that they might not hearken to my law; therefore [according to the words which the Lord Almighty by his spirit sent by the ministry of the former prophets] there was great wrath from the Lord Almighty;

¹³ Moreover you have done those things which I hate. You have covered the altar of the Lord with tears. And amidst lamentations and groans for oppression is it still proper to look upon a sacrifice, or receive it acceptably at your hands? ¹⁴ And do you say, Why not? Because God was a witness between thee and the wife of thy youth whom thou hast forsaken, though she was thy companion and the wife of thy covenant.

¹⁵ And Jesus in reply said to him, "Permit this at present: for thus it becometh us to confirm all righteousness." Then John permitteth him;

³¹ and the demons besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, permit us to go into that herd of swine.

⁵ In answer to this, Jesus said to them, Because of your intractable disposition, Moses wrote this precept for you.

⁶ Now this I say by way of counsel, not of command;

¹⁸ And Pharaoh called Abram and said, Why hast thou acted thus with me and didst not tell me that she is thy wife? Why didst thou say, She is my sister? I indeed took her to be my wife, but now there is thy wife before thee. Take her and begone. ¹⁹ And Pharaoh gave strict orders to men touching Abram, to convoy away him and his wife and all that he had.

³ And Abimelech the king of the Gerarites sent and took Sarah. And God came to Abimelech in a dream by night and said, Behold thou diest for this woman, whom thou hast taken; for she is the man's wife.

¹¹ For he erected high places in the cities of Juda, and caused the inhabitants of Jerusalem to go a whoring, and led Juda astray.

¹ If a man divorce his wife and she depart from him and marry another, can she return again to him? would not such a wife be altogether polluted? Yet thou hast played the harlot with many shepherds and hast returned to me saith the Lord.

⁸ Then I passed by thee and beheld thee and lo! thou wast of a marriageable age. So I spread my skirt over thee and covered thy nakedness; and sware to thee and entered into covenant with thee, saith the Lord.

¹⁵ thou wast vain of thy beauty and became a harlot because of thy renown: and didst pour out thy fornications upon every passenger.

²⁹ So having committed whoredom and not being satiated thou didst multiply thy covenants with the land of the Chaldees and even with these thou wast not satisfied.

³² But I say to you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except for whoredom, causeth her to commit adultery: and whoever shall marry her who is put away, committeth adultery.

¹⁸ Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery. And whoever marrieth her who hath been divorced committeth adultery.

² For the married woman is by law bound to her husband while he is alive. But if the husband die, a stop is put to the operation of the law of the husband. ³ Therefore if she marry another man while her husband is alive, she will get the name of an adulteress; but if her husband die, she is free from the law so as not to be an adulteress by becoming another man's wife.

¹ It is currently reported that there is among you an act of lewdness, and of such a sort as is not named among the nations, so that one hath his father's wife:

¹⁰ And to them who are married I give this injunction; not I but the Lord: That a wife separate not herself from her husband; ¹¹ but if she hath actually separated, let her continue unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband; and that a husband put not away a wife. ¹² And to the rest I say, not the Lord; if any brother hath an unbelieving wife, and she is well satisfied to live with him, let him not divorce her: ¹³ and if any woman hath an unbelieving husband, and he is well satisfied to live with her, let her not divorce him.

³⁹ A wife is bound by law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband die; she is at liberty to many whom she will; only in the Lord.

¹⁵ Drink water from thine own vessels, and from the wells of thine own fountain. ¹⁶ Let not the waters from thy fountain over flow for thee; but let thy waters run in thine own streets. ¹⁷ Let them be for thyself only, and let no stranger partake with thee. ¹⁸ Let thy fountain of water be appropriate to thyself; and rejoice with the wife of thy youth. ¹⁹ Let thy loving hind and graceful fawn converse with thee; and let her be accounted peculiarly thine, and be with thee on all occasions. For ravished with her love thou wilt become a numerous family.

²² He who hath found a good wife hath found favour, and hath received joy from God. He who putteth away a good wife, putteth away good things; but he who retaineth an adulteress is foolish and wicked.

¹³ A foolish son is a shame to a father. vows for the hire of a harlot are not pure. ¹⁴ Fathers bequeath houses and wealth to children; but the Lord accommodateth a wife to a husband.

⁹ It is better to dwell in a corner in the open air; than in apartments plaistered with injustice; and in a house which is not clean.

¹⁹ It is better to dwell in the wilderness than with a quarrelsome, clamorous and passionate wife.

¹ Now with respect to those matters about which you wrote to me, it is well for a man not to marry: ² but to avoid fornication let every man have his own wife; and every woman her own husband.

⁸ I say then to unmarried men and to widows, it is well for them if they continue as I do.

²⁶ I think then this to be good on account of the impending distress; that it is well for a man to be as he is. ²⁷ Art thou bound to a wife? seek not to be disengaged: Art thou disengaged from a wife, seek not a wife. ²⁸ But if thou shouldst actually marry, thou hast not sinned; and if the virgin marry she hath not sinned. But such will have affliction in the flesh: But I spare you

³² and I wish you to be free from anxious cares. He who is unmarried careth for the things of the Lord how he may please the Lord; ³³ but he who is married careth for the things of the world, how he may please his wife. ³⁴ There is the like difference between the wife and the virgin. The unmarried careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and spirit; but she who is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband. ³⁵ Now this I say for your own benefit, not with a view to lay a snare for you; but for that which is becoming and best adapted to a steady, uninterrupted adherence to the Lord.

³⁹ A wife is bound by law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband die; she is at liberty to many whom she will; only in the Lord. ⁴⁰ But she is happier, if she continue as she is. This is my opinion, and I think I have a spirit of God.

³ forbidding marriage, and enjoining an abstinence from meats which God hath created to be partaken of with thankfulness by the faithful, and by them who are convinced of this truth,

¹¹ As for young widows, reject them; for when they become impatient of the restraints of the Christ, they will wish to marry, ¹² incurring blame for having violated their former engagement. ¹³ Add to this, that, being idle, they learn to ramble from house to house, and are not only idle, but are indeed tatlers, and intermedlers, speaking tilings which are unbecoming. ¹⁴ My decision therefore is, that the younger widows marry, bear children, govern their families, give no advantage, no occasion of reproach to the adversary. ¹⁵ For some have already turned aside after satan.

¹¹ And he in reply said to them, To you it hath been granted to know the secrets of the reign of the heavens; but to them it hath not been granted.

⁷ for I wish all men to be as I myself am. But every one hath his peculiar gift from God, some of one kind; and some, of another. ⁸ I say then to unmarried men and to widows, it is well for them if they continue as I do. ⁹ But if they have not the gift of continency, let them marry; for it is better to marry than to burn.

¹⁷ But as God hath distributed to every one; as the Lord hath called every one, so let him walk. And thus I enjoin in all the congregations.

³⁵ Now this I say for your own benefit, not with a view to lay a snare for you; but for that which is becoming and best adapted to a steady, uninterrupted adherence to the Lord.

⁷ That of thy children whom thou shalt beget, they will take some and make them eunuchs in the house of the king of the Babylonians.

³ Let not the stranger who cleaveth to the Lord say, "The Lord will separate me from his people." Nor let the eunuch say, "I am a dry tree." ⁴ For thus saith the Lord to the eunuchs, whoever of them shall keep my sabbaths, and chuse the things in which I delight and adhere to my covenant;

³² and I wish you to be free from anxious cares. He who is unmarried careth for the things of the Lord how he may please the Lord; ³³ but he who is married careth for the things of the world, how he may please his wife. ³⁴ There is the like difference between the wife and the virgin. The unmarried careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and spirit; but she who is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband. ³⁵ Now this I say for your own benefit, not with a view to lay a snare for you; but for that which is becoming and best adapted to a steady, uninterrupted adherence to the Lord. ³⁶ But if any man thinketh that he bringeth reproach on his virgin; if she be past the prime, this then should be the rule, What she willeth, let him do, he doth not sin; let them marry: ³⁷ but whoever hath come to a. fixed determination in his heart, using no constraint, but hath power with respect to his own will and hath determined in his heart to keep his virgin, he doth well. ³⁸ So that he who giveth in marriage doth well, but he who giveth not in marriage doth better.

⁵ Have we not a power to take along with us a sister, wife as well as the other apostles, and the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?

¹⁵ But as for me I have not made use of any of these privileges nor have I written these things that they should be a rule for me. For it were better for me to die than that any should deprive me of what is my boast.

¹ After this when it was told Joseph, Thy father is sick, he took his two sons Manasses and Ephraim and went to Jacob.

⁹ And Joseph said to his father, They are my sons, whom God hath given me here. Whereupon Jacob said, Bring them near to me that I may bless them. ¹⁰ Now Israel's eyes were dim by reason of old age and he could not see clearly. And when he brought them near to him, he kissed them and embraced them. ¹¹ And Israel said to Joseph, Lo! was I not deprived of thy presence? yet behold God hath shewn me even thy seed. ¹² Then Joseph took them from his knees; and when they had made obeisance to him with their face to the ground, ¹³ Joseph taking his two sons, Ephraim in his right hand towards Israel's left and Manasses in his left hand towards Israel's right, brought them near to him. ¹⁴ But Israel stretching out his right hand laid it on Ephraim's head [now he was the youngest] and his left hand on Manasses' head crossing his hands. ¹⁵ And he blessed them and said, The God whom my fathers Abraham and Isaak worshipped; the God who hath fed me from my youth to this day; ¹⁶ the Angel who delivered me from all evils, bless these children! And let them be called by my name and by the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaak; and may they be increased to a great multitude on the earth! ¹⁷ Now when Joseph saw that his father put his right hand on Ephraim's head, it appeared amiss to him; and he took hold of his father's hand to remove it from Ephraim's head to the head of Manasses. ¹⁸ And Joseph said to his father, Not so, my father: for this is the first born, put thy right hand on his head. ¹⁹ But he refused and said, I know; my son; I know. This indeed will be a people and will be exalted. But his younger brother will be greater than he; and his seed will be a multitude of nations. ²⁰ And he blessed them that day and said, By you Israel will bless saying, God make thee like Ephraim and Manasses. So he put Ephraim before Manasses.

²⁴ And when she had weaned him, she went up with her husband to Selom, with a bull of three years old, and bread, and an epha of fine flour, and a nebal of wine, and came to the house of the Lord at Selom, and the boy with them.

¹⁴ May the Lord add to you more and more; to you and to your children ¹⁵ May you be blessed by the Lord: who made the heaven and the earth.

³⁹ And I will give them another way and another heart that I may be always feared and may be for good to them and their children after them.

²² Upon which Peter, taking him aside, began to check him, saying, Mercy on thee, O my Lord! This cannot befal thee.

² Whereupon Jesus, having called to him a little child, placed it in the midst of them ³ and said, Verily I say to you, Unless you be changed, and be like children you shall never enter the kingdom of the heavens. ⁴ Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, he is of higher dignity in the kingdom of the heavens. ⁵ And whoever shall receive one such child in my name, receiveth me.

³¹ And when the people reprimanded them that they might hold their peace, they cried the louder, saying, Have pity on us, O master, son of David.

¹³ Then children were brought to him, that he might touch them; and his disciples rebuked those who brought them. ¹⁴ But Jesus, observing this, expressed displeasure, and said to them, Suffer the children to come to me, and do not hinder the; for of such is the kingdom of God. ¹⁵ Verily I say to you, Whosoever will not, like a child, receive the kingdom of God, he shall in no wise enter it. ¹⁶ Then, having taken them in his arms, he laid his hands on them, and blessed them.

⁴⁹ Then John addressing him, said, Master, we saw one casting out the demons in thy name, and we forbade him because he doth not follow [thee] with us. ⁵⁰ Thereupon Jesus said to him, Forbid not; for he who is not against us is for us.

⁵⁴ Upon seeing this, his disciples, James and John, said, Master, Is it thy pleasure that we command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, as Elias did? ⁵⁵ Whereupon, turning about, he rebuked them, and said, You do not know what spirit you are of.

¹⁵ When they brought even little children to him that he might touch them, and his disciples observing it, rebuked them; ¹⁶ Jesus thereupon having called the children to him, said, Suffer the children to come to me, and do not hinder them, for of such is the kingdom of God. ¹⁷ Verily I say to you, Whosoever will not as a child receive the kingdom of God, he shall in no wise enter it.

³⁹ For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all them afar off, whomsoever the Lord our God may invite."

¹⁴ For the unbelieving husband is hallowed by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is hallowed by the husband; else your children would be unclean; whereas they are now holy.

⁷ And I will establish this my covenant with thee and thy seed after thee, throughout their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be thy God and the God of thy seed after thee. ⁸ And I will give thee and thy seed after thee this land in which thou sojournest; even all the land of Chanaan for an everlasting possession, and I will be their God."

²⁴ Now Abraham was ninety nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. ²⁵ And Ismael his son was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. ²⁶ In one and the same day were circumcised Abraham and his son Ismael

⁴ And Abraham circumcised Isaak on the eighth day, as God had commanded him.

⁷ child, and shalt bear a son. Now therefore thou must not drink wine nor any fermented liquor, nor eat any thing unclean; for the child shall be consecrated to God, from the womb to the day of his death.

¹¹ And she vowed a vow to the Lord, saying, Adonai, Lord, Eloe Sabbaoth! If thou wilt look on the affliction of thy handmaid, and remember me, and give thy handmaid a man child, I will dedicate him before thee, as a gift to the day of his death; and he shall not drink wine, nor fermented liquor, nor shall a razor come on his head.

²² Anna did not go up with him; for she said to her husband, Not till the boy can go up after I have weaned him, that he may appear before the Lord, and abide there continually.

¹⁸ But Samuel ministered before the Lord, being a child girded with a linen ephod.

²⁵ At that time Jesus took occasion to say, I thank thee, O father, Lord of heaven and earth; that thou having hid these things from the wise and prudent, hast revealed them to babes.

³ and said, Verily I say to you, Unless you be changed, and be like children you shall never enter the kingdom of the heavens.

¹⁴ But Jesus, observing this, expressed displeasure, and said to them, Suffer the children to come to me, and do not hinder the; for of such is the kingdom of God.

²⁰ Brethren, be not children in your understandings; but be infants in malice; and in your understandings full grown men.

¹ Therefore laying aside all malice, and all deceit, and every kind of hypocrisy, envy and slander, ² like newborn babes desire the pure milk of the word that by it you may thrive.

¹¹ Like a shepherd he will tend his flock; and with his arm he will gather the lambs, and comfort the ewes that are with young.

¹⁶ Then, having taken them in his arms, he laid his hands on them, and blessed them.

¹⁵ and that, from thy childhood, thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise for salvation by trusting in Christ Jesus.

² And many of them who sleep in mounds of earth shall be raised up, some for everlasting life and some for disgrace and everlasting shame.

¹⁷ In reply to which Jesus said to him, Why callest thou me good? There is none good but God only. But if thou desirest to enter into that life, keep the commandments. ¹⁸ He saith to him, Which? And Jesus said, These: Thou shalt not commit murder; Thou shalt not commit adultery; Thou shalt not steal; Thou shall not bear false witness;

²⁶ Thereupon Jesus looking earnestly at them said, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

²⁹ And everyone who hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or fields for the sake of my name, shall receive an hundred fold compensation. He shall indeed inherit an everlasting life.

⁴⁶ So these shall go to everlasting punishment and the righteous to an everlasting life.

¹⁷ And as he was setting out on his journey, one came running, and kneeling down before him, asked him, Good teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit an everlasting life? ¹⁸ Thereupon Jesus said to him, Why callest thou me good? There is none good but God only. ¹⁹ Thou knowest the commandments; thou shall not commit adultery, thou shalt not commit murder, thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not bear false testimony, thou shalt not defraud, honour thy father and thy mother. ²⁰ He answering, said to him, Teacher, All these I have observed from my childhood. ²¹ Then Jesus, looking stedfastly on him, loved him, and said to him, One thing is wanting to thee. Go sell what thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven. Then come, and having taken up the cross, follow me. ²² At this word, he was grieved and went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. ²³ Thereupon Jesus, looking round, saith to his disciples, How difficult it is for them who have riches to enter into the kingdom of God! ²⁴ At these words of his, his disciples being astonished, Jesus, addressing them again, saith, Children, How difficult a thing it is for them who trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God. ²⁵ It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. ²⁶ At this they were still more astonished, and said among themselves, Who then can be saved? ²⁷ Whereupon Jesus, looking stedfastly on them, saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God. For with God all things are possible. ²⁸ Upon this Peter took occasion to say to him, Behold we have forsaken all and followed thee. ²⁹ In reply to this, Jesus said, Verily I say to you, There is none who hath left house, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or fields, for the sake of me and the glad tidings, ³⁰ who shall not now, even in the present time, receive an hundred fold compensation for houses, and brothers, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and fields, as well as for persecutions and in the age to come, everlasting life.

²⁵ Then a certain teacher of the law stood up, and with a view to try him, said, Teacher, what must I do to inherit everlasting life? ²⁶ Whereupon Jesus said to him, What is written in the law? How readest thou? ²⁷ And he in reply, said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, even with thy whole mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. ²⁸ Upon this Jesus said to him, Thou hast answered right. Do this and thou shall live.

¹⁸ When a certain chief asked him, saying, Good teacher, What shall I do that I may obtain everlasting life? ¹⁹ Jesus said to him, Why callest thou me good? None is good but God alone. ²⁰ Thou knowest the commandments; thou shall not commit adultery; thou shalt not commit murder; thou shalt not steal; thou shalt not bear false witness; honour thy father and thy mother. ²¹ And he said, all these I have kept from my youth. ²² Upon hearing this, Jesus said to him, There is still one thing wanting to thee. Sell all that thou hast and distribute to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven. Then come and follow me. ²³ At hearing this he was very sorrowful; for he was very rich. ²⁴ When Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, With what difficulty will men who have these things, enter into the kingdom of God! ²⁵ for it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. ²⁶ And when they who heard this said, Who then can be saved? ²⁷ He said, Things, which are impossible to men, are possible to God. ²⁸ Then Peter said, Behold we have forsaken all and followed thee. ²⁹ Whereupon Jesus said to them, Verily I say to you, There is none who hath left house or parents, or brothers, or wife, or children for the sake of the kingdom of God, ³⁰ who shall not receive manifold more in return in this present time, and in the age to come everlasting life.

¹⁵ that whosoever believeth in him may not perish; but have everlasting life.

¹⁴ but whosoever shall drink of the water which I will give him, will never thirst. But the water which I will give him, will be in him a fountain of water springing up for an everlasting life.

³⁹ You search the scriptures because you think you have by means of them everlasting life! Now these are the very writings which testify concerning me;

²⁷ Labour not to procure the food which perisheth, but the food which endureth for an everlasting life, which the son of man will give you; for him the Father, namely God, hath sealed. ²⁸ Thereupon they said to him, What must we do that we may work the works of God? ²⁹ Jesus answered and said to them, This is the work of God that you believe in him whom he hath sent.

⁴⁷ Verily, verily, I say to you, He who believeth in me, hath an everlasting life.

⁶⁸ Whereupon Simon Peter answered him, Master, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of an everlasting life,

²⁸ and I give them everlasting life; and they shall never perish, nor shall any one wrest them out of my hand.

²⁵ He who loveth his life, will lose it: but he who slighteth his life in this world, shall keep it for an everlasting life.

² that, as thou hast given him power over all flesh, he may, according to all that thou hast given him, give to these everlasting life. ³ Now this is the life everlasting that they may know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent.

³⁰ and having brought them out, said, O sirs, What must I do to be saved?

⁷ to them who by perseverance in well-doing, seek for glory and honour, and incorruption [he will grant] everlasting life;

²¹ that as sin had reigned by death, so favour might reign by means' of a justification for everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

²² But being now set free from sin and become servants of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and in the end, everlasting life. ²³ For die wages of sin is death; but the free gift of God is everlasting life by Christ Jesus our Lord.

¹⁶ but I obtained mercy for this purpose, that Jesus Christ might display the utmost forbearance in me, a chief, for an example to them who should afterwards trust in him for everlasting life.

¹² Maintain the good combat of faith. Lay hold on the life everlasting to which thou hast been invited, and of which thou hast made a good profession before many witnesses.

¹⁹ laying up for themselves a good deposit for the time to come, that they may obtain the life everlasting.

² in hope of an everlasting life, which the God of truth promised before the times consisting of ages,

⁷ in order that we, being pardoned by his favour, might become expectant heirs of everlasting life.

² even the life was manifested, and we have seen, and testify, and announce to you, that eternal life which was with the Father, and hath been clearly manifested to us]

²⁵ And this is the promise which he hath promised us, even the life which is everlasting.

¹¹ Now this is the testimony, that God hath given us everlasting life, and this life is by his son: ¹² he who hath the son hath this life: he who hath not the son of God hath not this life. ¹³ These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the son of God, that you may know that you have everlasting life; and that you may believe in the name of the son of God:

²⁰ and we know that the son of God is come, and hath given us understanding that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, and in his son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and the life eternal.

²¹ keep yourselves in the love of God, as you expect the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ for everlasting life;

⁵ therefore you shall keep all my commandments, and all my judgments, and execute them, which if a man do he shall live thereby. I the Lord am your God;

² Because there is none holy like the Lord, And none is righteous like our God, There is none holy besides thee.

²⁹ and admonish them to return to thy law. When they hearkened not, but transgressed thy commandments and thy judgments, [which if a man practise he shall live thereby] and turned back rebelliously, and hardened their neck, and would not hear,

¹ For the conclusion. On understanding. By David, when Dock the Idumean came and told Saul and said to him, David went to Abimelech's house. Why boastest thou in mischief, mighty man of iniquity? All the day long he devised injustice.

⁷ Let them make mention of thine abundant goodness, and exult with joy in thy saving mercy. ⁸ The Lord is gracious and merciful: long suffering and abundant in kindness. ⁹ The Lord is kind to them who wait, and his mercies are over all his works.

¹¹ and made known to them my rules of rectitude, which if a man practise he shall live thereby; ¹² I gave them also my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them; that they might know that I the Lord am their sanctifier.

²¹ But even these their children rebelled against me. In my statutes they did not walk, nor did they keep my rules of rectitude to practise them, which if a man do he shall live by them; and they profaned my sabbaths; therefore I spoke of pouring out my wrath upon them in the wilderness; of accomplishing mine indignation upon them.

⁵ For Moses describeth the righteousness which is from the law, thus; "The man who doth these things shall live thereby;"

¹¹ And that none is justified by law in the sight of God is evident, for "the just shall live because of faith." ¹² Now the law is not because of belief, but, "The man who doth these things shall live by them." ¹³ From this curse of the law Christ hath redeemed us, being made a curse for us; [for it is written, "Cursed, is every one who is suspended on a cross,"]

¹⁷ Every good donation, and every perfect gift, is from above, and cometh down from the father of lights, with whom there is no change, nor shadow of turning. 18 Of his own will he hath impregnated us with a word of truth, that we may be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.

⁸ He who doth not love hath not known God, for God is love. ⁹ By this the love of God was manifested among us, because God sent his only begotten son into the world, that we may live by him. ¹⁰ In this is the love; not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his son to be an atonement for our sins.

¹⁶ Now we have known and believed this love which God hath for us. God is love; and he who abideth in this love abideth in God, and God in him.

¹² Honour thy father and thy mother that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayst live long in that good land, which the Lord thy God giveth thee. ¹³ Thou shalt not commit adultery. ¹⁴ Thou shalt not steal. ¹⁵ Thou shalt not commit murder. ¹⁶ Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. ¹⁷ Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife; thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, nor his field, nor his man servant, nor his maid servant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any of his cattle, nor any thing belonging to thy neighbour.

¹⁶ Honour thy father and thy mother, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee, that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayst live long in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. ¹⁷ Thou shalt not commit murder. ¹⁸ Thou shalt not commit adultery. ¹⁹ Thou shalt not steal. ²⁰ Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. ²¹ Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife; thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, nor his field, nor his man servant, nor his maid servant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any of his cattle, nor any thing which is thy neighbour's.

²¹ You have heard that it was said to them of old, "Thou shalt not commit murder." And, "Whosoever shall commit murder shall be liable to the sentence of the judges." ²² But I say to you, Whosoever is angry with his brother without cause, shall be liable to the sentence of the judges: and whoever shall say to his brother, Raca, [a contemptuous word] shall be liable to the sentence of the Sanhedrim; and whoever shall say, Moreh, [a reproachful word] shall be liable [to be sentenced] to the vale of fire. ²³ If therefore thou bring thy gift to the altar and recollect there that thy brother hath ground of complaint against thee; ²⁴ leave there thy gift before the altar and go away. First of all be reconciled with thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. ²⁵ Come speedily to a friendly agreement with thine adversary, whilst thou art on the road with him; lest the adversary deliver thee up to the judge; and the judge consign thee to the officer, and thou be thrown into prison. ²⁶ Verily I say to thee, thou shalt not be released until thou hast discharged the last farthing. ²⁷ You have heard that it hath been said to the ancients, "Thou shalt not commit adultery." ²⁸ But I say to you, whoever looketh on a married woman so as to lust after her, hath already committed adultery with her in his heart.

¹⁹ Thou knowest the commandments; thou shall not commit adultery, thou shalt not commit murder, thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not bear false testimony, thou shalt not defraud, honour thy father and thy mother.

²⁰ Thou knowest the commandments; thou shall not commit adultery; thou shalt not commit murder; thou shalt not steal; thou shalt not bear false witness; honour thy father and thy mother.

⁸ Owe no one any thing, save this, to love one another: for he who loveth others hath fulfilled the law: ⁹ for this: Thou shalt not commit adultery; Thou shall not murder; Thou shalt not steal; Thou shalt not bear false witness; Thou shall not covet; and whatever other commandment there be, is summed up in this commandment, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. ¹⁰ This love worketh no evil to one's neighbour: This love therefore is the fulfilling of the law.

¹⁰ For as many as are of works of law are under a curse; for it is written, "Cursed is every one who will not persevere in all that. are written in the book of the law to do them."

¹⁰ For whosoever is to keep the whole law and shall fail in one point, is guilty of all. ¹¹ For it having said, "Thou shalt not commit adultery," hath also said, "Thou shalt not murder" Now, if thou shall not commit adultery, but shalt commit murder, thou art become a transgressor of law.

¹² Honour thy father and thy mother that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayst live long in that good land, which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

¹⁴ Thou shalt not steal. ¹⁵ Thou shalt not commit murder.

³ Let every one reverence his father and his mother. And you shall keep my sabbaths. I am the Lord your God;

¹⁸ but let not thy hand take vengeance. Thou shalt not bear a grudge against the children of thy people; but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. I am the Lord;

¹⁶ Honour thy father and thy mother, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee, that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayst live long in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

¹⁷ The eye which derideth a father and despiseth the old age of a mother, may the ravens of the valley pick it out, and the young eagles devour it.

⁴³ You have heard that it was said, "Thou shalt love thy neighbour and hate thine enemy."

⁴ For God commanded saying, "Honour thy father and thy mother, and whosoever revileth father or mother let him be put to death: ⁵ but you say, "Whoever shall say to his father or to his mother, Let that by which thou mightest be benefited by me, be dedicated, ⁶ must not honour either his father or his mother." Thus you have annulled the commandment of God from a regard to your doctrines.

³⁹ And the second is like it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

²⁷ And he in reply, said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, even with thy whole mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.

⁹ for this: Thou shalt not commit adultery; Thou shall not murder; Thou shalt not steal; Thou shalt not bear false witness; Thou shall not covet; and whatever other commandment there be, is summed up in this commandment, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

¹⁴ For the whole law is summed up in this one precept, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

¹ Children, obey your parents in the Lord; for this is right. ² Honour thy father and mother [this is the first commandment with a promise]

⁸ If you fulfil a law which, according to the scripture, is indeed a royal one, namely, "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself," you do well:

²⁰ He answering, said to him, Teacher, All these I have observed from my childhood. ²¹ Then Jesus, looking stedfastly on him, loved him, and said to him, One thing is wanting to thee. Go sell what thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven. Then come, and having taken up the cross, follow me.

⁷ Thus, I assure you, there will be greater joy in heaven for one reforming sinner, than for ninety nine righteous persons who have no need of reformation.

²⁹ But he answering, said to his father, Behold these many years that I have served thee without ever disobeying thy command, thou hast never given me a kid, that I might be merry with my friends:

¹¹ The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus, O God, I thank thee that I am not as the rest of men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers; nor even as that publican. ¹² I fast twice a week. I pay tithes of all that I possess.

²¹ And he said, all these I have kept from my youth. ²² Upon hearing this, Jesus said to him, There is still one thing wanting to thee. Sell all that thou hast and distribute to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven. Then come and follow me.

⁷ And as they continued asking him, he raised himself up, and said to them, Let him among you who is without sin throw the first stone at her.

¹⁹ Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world stand convicted before God. ²⁰ Because no flesh can be justified before him by works of law; for by law there is a knowledge of sin, ²¹ now therefore, independency of law, there is made manifest a justification of God's appointment, attested by the law and the prophets ²² even a justification, of God's appointment, by faith in Jesus Christ, for all and upon all who believe; for there is no distinction; ²³ for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.

⁹ Now as for me, I for a while was alive without law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died.

²⁴ So that the law was our tutor to guide us to Christ, that we might be justified for belief.

⁶ with respect to zeal, a persecutor of the congregation; with respect to righteousness which is by law, blameless;

⁹ Now these are the generations of Noe. Noe was a just man; and being perfect in the tenor of his life, Noe pleased God.

¹ And when Abram was ninety nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, "I am thy God. Be well pleasing in my sight, and be blameless

¹ There was a man in the country of Ausitis whose name was Job. He was a man of truth and integrity, just, pious, and who abstained from every thing that was evil.

³⁷ Preserve innocence and eye rectitude; for there is a remnant for the man of peace.

¹⁹ and he said to them, Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.

¹⁹ Therefore whosoever shall weaken the force of one of the commandments, were it even the least, and teach men accordingly, he shall be the least esteemed in the reign of the heavens; but whoever shall practise and teach them, he shall be highly esteemed in the reign of the heavens. ²⁰ For I say to you, Unless your righteousness exceed that of the Scribes and Pharisees, you can in no wise enter the kingdom of the heavens.

⁴⁸ You therefore are to be perfect, as your Father, who is in heaven, is perfect.

¹⁹ Lay not up for yourselves treasures on the earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal; ²⁰ but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumeth; and where thieves do not break through and steal.

²² And to him Jesus said, Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.

⁹ When Jesus was going thence he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the custom house; and he saith to him, Follow me. Whereupon he arose and followed him.

²⁴ Then Jesus said to his disciples if any one wisheth to follow me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

²⁸ Thereupon Jesus said to him, Verily I say to you, With respect to you who have followed me, at the renovation, when the son of man shall sit on the throne of his glory, you also shall sit on twelve thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

¹⁴ Now as he passed on he saw Levi, the son of Alpheus, sitting at the custom house, and saith to him, Follow me. Whereupon he arose and followed him.

³⁴ Then, having called to him the multitude, with his disciples, he said to them, Whosoever hath a mind to come under my guidance, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

²¹ Then Jesus, looking stedfastly on him, loved him, and said to him, One thing is wanting to thee. Go sell what thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven. Then come, and having taken up the cross, follow me.

²⁷ And after this he went out and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom, and said to him, Follow me.

⁴⁰ A scholar is not above his teacher. But every one will be instructed as his teacher is.

²³ Moreover he said to all, if any one desireth to come under my guidance, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

³³ sell your possessions and give alms: provide for yourselves purses which do not wear out; a treasure in the heavens, which will never fail; where no thief approacheth, nor moth spoileth:

³³ In like manner, therefore, let every one of you do. He who doth not give up all his possessions, cannot be my disciple.

⁹ therefore I say to you, From the worldly prudence of this unrighteousness, make ye friends for yourselves, that when you fail, ye may be received into the everlasting abodes.

²² Upon hearing this, Jesus said to him, There is still one thing wanting to thee. Sell all that thou hast and distribute to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven. Then come and follow me.

²⁷ My sheep, as I told you, hearken to my voice and I know them, and they follow me:

²⁶ If any one would wait upon me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall this attendant of mine also be. And if any one wait upon me my Father will reward him.

⁴⁵ and they sold their possessions and goods and distributed them to all, as any had need.

³² Now the whole body of the believers were of one heart and one soul. And no one said that any of his goods were his own; but all things were common among them. ³³ And the apostles delivered with great power the testimony of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And there was great thankfulness among them all; ³⁴ for there was not one indigent person among them: for as many as were proprietors of lands or houses sold them and brought the prices of the things sold, ³⁵ which being laid at the apostles feet, distribution was made to every one according as any had need.

¹² not that I have already received, or am yet made perfect, but I continue the pursuit, that I may lay hold that for which I have been laid hold on by the Christ Jesus. ¹³ Brethren, I do not reckon myself to have laid hold on it, but one thing [I do], forgetting the things which are behind, and intent on the things before, ¹⁴ I press forward to the mark, for the prize of the call of God from above by Christ Jesus. ¹⁵ Let as many of us therefore as are full grown, have our minds bent on this; and if any of you are otherwise minded, when God shall reveal this to you,

¹⁷ Charge them who are rich in this present state not to be high minded; not to trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God who imparteth to us richly all things for enjoyment; ¹⁸ to be beneficent; to be rich in good works, ready to distribute; willing to communicate, ¹⁹ laying up for themselves a good deposit for the time to come, that they may obtain the life everlasting.

³⁴ For you sympathized with me in my bonds, and waited with joy the seizure of your goods, knowing that you had in yourselves a better,"even an ever-during substance in heaven.

²³ Upon which the sons of Dan turned about and said to Micah, What is the matter with thee that thou hast raised the shout of war? ²⁴ And Micah said, Because you have taken my graven image, which I made, and the priest; and have gone away. What more could have happened to me? Why then do you say to me, Why dost thou shout?

¹⁴ from thine enemies hand Dismiss them, Lord, from the land: disperse them in their life time. Though their belly was filled with thy stores; they glutted themselves with swine's flesh, and left the relicks for their children.

³¹ They come to thee as people assemble; and they sit before thee and hear thy words, but will not do them, because there is a lie in their mouth, and their heart goeth after their pollutions;

¹⁴ When the king heard this matter he was exceedingly grieved for it and strove hard for Daniel to save him and continued till evening his endeavours to deliver him. ¹⁵ Then the men said to the king, Know, king, that it is decreed by the Medes and Persians, That no edict or statute which the king shall pass must be dispensed with. ¹⁶ Then the king gave orders and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions' den. And the king said to Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually will himself deliver thee. ¹⁷ And when they had brought a stone and put it on the mouth of the den, the king caused it to be sealed with his own signet and with the signet of his nobles that nothing might be altered in respect to Daniel.

²⁴ No man can serve two masters: for he will either hate one and love the other; or he will attend to one and neglect the other. You cannot serve God and a worldly temperent

²² And that sown among thorns denoteth him, who heareth the word, but worldly care and the delusion of riches choak the word and it becometh unfruitful.

⁹ Though the king was sorry, yet from a regard to the oath and the guests, he ordered it to be given her.

²⁶ For what will a man be profited, if he should gain the whole world, and be punished with the forfeit of his life? Or, what will not a man give as a ransom for his life?

²⁶ Though the king was much grieved, yet from a regard to his oaths, and his guests, he would not refuse her.

²² At this word, he was grieved and went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

²³ At hearing this he was very sorrowful; for he was very rich.

¹² From this [time] Pilate sought to release him; but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend. Whoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar. ¹³ When Pilate therefore heard this speech, he brought out Jesus and sat down on the tribunal in a place called the pavement [in Hebrew Gabbatha.] ¹⁴ [It was now the paschal preparation day, and the sixth hour was drawing on,] and he saith to the Jews, Behold your king! ¹⁵ Whereupon they cried out, Away, away with him; crucify him. Pilate saith to them, Shall I crucify your king? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar. ¹⁶ Then he delivered him up to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus and led him away,

⁵ For this you know that no fornicator, nor unclean person, nor lewd libertine, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of the Christ and God.

⁵ Mortify, therefore, with regard to your members which are on earth, fornication, uncleanness, inordinate passions, wicked desire, and that licentiousness, which is idolatry,

¹⁰ And when the Lord thy God hath brought thee into the land, which, with an oath he promised to thy fathers, to Abraham, and Isaak, and Jacob, to give thee cities, great and beautiful, which thou hast not builded; ¹¹ houses full of all good things, which thou hast not filled; cisterns of hewn stone, which thou hast not hewed; vineyards, and olive yards which thou hast not planted; and when thou hast eaten, and art filled, ¹² take heed to thyself, that thou forget not the Lord thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt; out of the house of bondage.

¹⁰ Therefore when thou hast eaten, and art satisfied, thou shalt bless the Lord thy God in that good land, which he hath given thee. ¹¹ Take heed to thyself, that thou forget not the Lord thy God, so as not to keep his commandments, and his judgments, and his rules of rectitude, which I this day command thee. ¹² When thou hast eaten, and art satisfied, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein, ¹³ and when thy herds, and thy flocks, are multiplied, and thou hast silver and gold in abundance, and all thy possessions are multiplied, ¹⁴ be not elated in heart, nor forget the Lord thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage; ¹⁵ who conducted you through that great and frightful wilderness, where there were biting serpents and scorpions, and drought, where there was no water; who brought a fountain of water for thee out of a flinty rock; ¹⁶ who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thou didst not know, and which was not known by thy fathers, that he might afflict thee, and try thee, and do thee good in thy latter days. ¹⁷ Say not in thy heart, My own power, and the strength of my own hand bath procured me this great wealth: ¹⁸ but remember the Lord thy God, that it is he who giveth thee power to procure wealth, that he may establish the covenant which the Lord made with thy fathers, as at this day.

²⁴ If I have made gold my measure, or placed my confidence in precious stones: ²⁵ or if I have exulted because my wealth was great, or laid my hand on what was not counted out to me:

⁶ Some put confidence in their power: and some boast of the abundance of their wealth. ⁷ A brother is not redeemed. Is a man to redeem himself?

¹⁶ Fear not when a man groweth rich, nor when the glory of his house is increased. ¹⁷ For when he dieth he can carry nothing away: nor will this glory of his descend with him. ¹⁸ Because during this life his soul shall be blessed; let him praise thee when thou doest him a benefit. ¹⁹ He shall go to the generation of his fathers; he shall never see light.

²⁸ He who trusteth in riches shall fall; but he who helpeth the righteous shall nourish.

⁸ Give me neither riches nor poverty, but order for me things necessary and convenient; ⁹ that when I am filled I may not become false and say, Who seeth me? Or being in want, steal and swear by the name of God.

²⁰ For I say to you, Unless your righteousness exceed that of the Scribes and Pharisees, you can in no wise enter the kingdom of the heavens.

³¹ Which of the two did the will of his father? They say to him, The first. Jesus saith to them, Verily I say to you, The publicans and the harlots lead the way for you to the kingdom of God.

²³ Thereupon Jesus, looking round, saith to his disciples, How difficult it is for them who have riches to enter into the kingdom of God!

¹⁵ Then he said to them, Take heed and be upon your guard against covetousness. For in what affluence soever a man may be, his life doth not depend on his possessions. ¹⁶ Then he spoke a parable to them saying, There was a certain rich man, whose ground produced plenteously. ¹⁷ Whereupon he reasoned within himself, saying, What shall I do; for I have not room to store my crops. ¹⁸ Then he said, I will do this. I will pull down my store houses and build larger, and there lay up all my produce and my good things. ¹⁹ And I will say to my soul; Soul, thou hast many good things laid up in store for many years: take thine ease; eat; drink; and be joyful. ²⁰ Whereupon God said to him; Fool, this very night this soul of thine will be demanded of thee. Whose then will those things be which thou hast provided? ²¹ Thus let every one [say] to himself who is heaping up treasure and is not rich for God.

¹³ No servant can serve two masters; for he will either hate one, and love the other; or he will attach himself to one, and despise the other: you cannot serve God and worldly prudence. ¹⁴ When the Pharisees who loved money heard all these things they treated him with scorn.

¹⁹ There was a certain rich man who was clad with purple and cotton robes, and who feasted daily in a splendid manner. ²⁰ And there was a certain poor man, named Lazarus, who was laid at his gate, full of sores, ²¹ desirous indeed to be fed with the crumbs which fell from his table: and moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. ²² At length this poor man died, and was carried by angels to Abraham's bosom. And the rich man died also, and was buried. ²³ And in the mansion of the dead having lifted up his eyes, being in torment, he seeth Abraham far off and Lazarus in his bosom. ²⁴ Whereupon he cried and said, Father, Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. ²⁵ And Abraham said, Son, remember that thou receivedst thy good things in thy life time; and Lazarus in like manner, his evil things. But now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. ²⁶ But besides all this, there is betwixt us and you, a huge gulf fixed; so that they, who would go hence to you, cannot. Neither can they who are there, cross over to us. ²⁷ Then he said, I intreat thee therefore, Father, to send him to my father's house; ²⁸ for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, that they also may not come to this place of torment.

²⁴ When Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, With what difficulty will men who have these things, enter into the kingdom of God!

³ Jesus answered and said to him, Verily, verily I say to thee, unless a man be born again, he cannot discern the reign of God.

⁵ Jesus answered, Verily, verily I say to thee, unless a man be born of water and spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

²² establishing and confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith. And because we must enter into the kingdom of God through many afflictions;

²⁶ For observe, brethren, this call of you, that there are not many wise after the flesh, not many mighty, not many of illustrious birth;

⁹ But they who determine to be rich, fall headlong into temptation, and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful desires, which plunge men into ruin and destruction. ¹⁰ For the love of money is the root of all evil; to gratify which, some have wandered from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

⁹ Let the brother who is in low circumstances glory in his exaltation; ¹⁰ and him who is rich, in his humiliation, because he shall pass away like a flower of the grass. ¹¹ For the sun riseth with its scorching heat, and withereth the blade, and the flower thereof failleth, and its beautiful appearance is gone. Just so will the rich man be blasted in his pursuits.

⁶ But you have treated the poor with disdain. Do not the rich domineer over you? Do they not drag you to tribunals?

¹ Come, now, ye rich; weep, and raise a mournful cry for the miseries which are coming upon you. ² Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth eaten. ³ Your gold and your silver are covered with rust; and the rust of them will be a witness against you, and corrode your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days. ⁴ Behold the wages of the labourers who have reaped your fields, which you have withholden, raise a cry; and the outcries of these reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth.

²³ Will an Ethiopian change his skin and a leopard her spots? As for you, then, will you who have learned these evils be able to do good?

²⁴ Blind guides, you are skimming off the gnat, and swallowing the camel.

²⁴ At these words of his, his disciples being astonished, Jesus, addressing them again, saith, Children, How difficult a thing it is for them who trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God. ²⁵ It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.

²⁵ for it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.

⁴⁴ How can you believe while you court honour one from another, and do not seek the glory which is from God alone?

²² Indeed if those days were not shortened, no flesh could escape. But for the sake of the chosen, those days will be shortened.

²⁰ And had not the Lord shortened those days, no flesh could escape. But for the sake of the chosen, whom he hath made choice of, he hath shortened those days.

²³ and one said to him, Master, are there few who are saved? He said to them; ²⁴ Strive with all your might to enter in through the narrow gate; for many, I assure you, will seek to enter, who will not be able.

¹³ "For whosoever will call on the name of the Lord shall be saved."

⁵ In like manner, therefore, at this present time there is a remnant according to a choice of favour. ⁶ Now if it be by favour, it is no more in consideration of works, since in this case the favour be no favour: but if it be in consideration of works it is no more of favour, otherwise the work is no work. ⁷ What is the inference? That which Israel sought he did not obtain; but the chosen obtained it and the rest were blinded.

¹⁴ Can any thing be impossible with God? About this time twelve month I will return to thee, and Sarah shall have a son.

²³ And the Lord said to Moses, Cannot the hand of the Lord furnish a sufficiency? Thou shalt now see whether my word shall come to pass to thee or not.

² I know that thou canst do all things, and that with thee nothing is impossible.

⁸ this deliverance is the Lord's: let thy blessing be upon thy people also.

¹¹ Once God hath spoken; these two things I have heard: That strength belongeth to God,

¹⁷ self-existent Lord, Thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and by thy high and exalted arm. From thee nothing can be hid.

²⁷ I the Lord am the God of all flesh. From me nothing can be hid.

⁶ Thus saith the Lord Almighty, If this shall appear impossible in the view of the remnant of this people in these clays; shall it also be impossible in my view, saith the Lord Almighty?

²⁷ Whereupon Jesus, looking stedfastly on them, saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God. For with God all things are possible.

³⁷ For with God nothing is impossible.

²⁷ He said, Things, which are impossible to men, are possible to God.

⁹ With regard to him who saith to his father and to his mother I have not beheld thee, And hath not acknowledged his brethren, And hath renounced his own children, He it is who hath observed thine Oracles And diligently kept thy covenant.

²⁰ Thereupon they immediately left their nets and followed him. ²¹ And passing on he saw other two brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the vessel with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. ²² Whereupon they immediately left the vessel and their father, and followed him.

¹⁰ And when the first hired came, they expected to receive more; but they also received everyone a deniar. ¹¹ And when they received it, they murmured against the householder, ¹² saying, These last have worked but one hour, and thou hast made them equal to us, who have borne the burden, and the heat of the day.

¹⁷ and Jesus said to them, Come with me and I will make you fishers of men. ¹⁸ Thereupon they straightway left their nets and followed him. ¹⁹ And going thence a little further, he saw James, the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who were in the vessel, mending the nets. ²⁰ And soon as he called them, they left their father Zebedee in the vessel, with the hired servants, and went after him.

²⁸ Upon this Peter took occasion to say to him, Behold we have forsaken all and followed thee.

¹¹ And when they had brought their vessels to land, they left all and followed him.

²⁷ And after this he went out and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom, and said to him, Follow me. ²⁸ Upon which, leaving all, he arose and followed him.

²⁸ Then Peter said, Behold we have forsaken all and followed thee.

²⁹ that no flesh might boast in his presence.

⁷ for one [teacher] against another. For who distinguisheth thee? Or what hast thou, which thou didst not receive? Now if thou hast received, why boastest thou as if thou hadst not received?

⁸ nay more, I do therefore indeed count all things but refuse, on account of the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have given up all and account them but dregs, that I may gain Christ

²⁷ Then they came to Aileim, where there were twelve fountains of water and seventy palm trees, and they encamped there by the water.

⁴ Then Moses wrote down all the words of the Lord. And rising early next morning Moses built an altar at the foot of the mount with twelve stones for the twelve tribes of Israel;

²¹ And the stones from the names of the sons of Israel must be twelve according to their names. They must be engraved like seals every one with its name for the twelve tribes.

⁵ And you shall take fine flour, and make it into twelve loaves, every loaf shall consist of two tenths;

³¹ Elias took twelve stones according to the number of the tribes of Israel, to whom the Lord had spoken, saying, Thy name shall be Israel;

¹⁷ and offered for the dedication of the house of God, a hundred young bulls, two hundred rams, four hundred lambs, and twelve he goats, for a sin offering, for all Israel, according to the number of the tribes of Israel.

¹⁷ for there shall be a new heaven and the earth shall be new: and they shall no more remember former things, nor shall they ever come again into their mind.

²² For as the new heaven and the new earth, which I make, shall remain in my presence, saith the Lord; so shall your seed and your name be established.

²⁷ For the son of man will come in the glory of his father, with his angels, and will then render to every one according to his actions.

²¹ Whereupon he said to her, What is thy desire? She said to him, Grant that these two sons of mine may sit, one on thy right hand and the other on thy left in thy kingdom.

³¹ So when the son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him; he will then sit on the throne of his glory.

²⁸ Now you are they, who have continued steadily with me in my trials. ²⁹ Therefore I covenant with you as my Father covenanted with me for a kingdom, ³⁰ that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

²¹ whom the heaven must receive till the time of the consummation of all which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets of old:

² Do you not know that the saints are to judge the world? If then the world is to be judged by you, are you unworthy to judge petty causes? ³ Do you not know that we shall judge angels? Can we not then things which concern this life?

⁷ and to you who are afflicted, rest with us at the manifestation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with his mighty angels, ⁸ executing, with flaming fire, vengeance on them who know not God, and on them who hearken not to the glad tidings of our Lord Jesus Christ. ⁹ These shall suffer punishment, an everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his majesty, ¹⁰ on the day when he shall come to be glorified by his saints, and to be admired by all those who believe that he was intrusted with this testimony of ours to you:

¹² If we suffer, we shall indeed reign with him. If we deny him, he will deny us.

¹³ and we, according to his promise, expect new heavens, and a new earth in which dwelleth righteousness!

²⁶ As for him who overcometh, and keepeth my works to the end, to him I will give power over the nations, ²⁷ [and he shall rule them with a rod of iron. Like vessels of potter's clay they shall be broken in pieces,]

²¹ To him who overcometh I will grant to sit with me on my throne, as I have overcome, and sit with my Father on his throne.

⁴ And around the throne there were four and twenty thrones; and on the thrones I saw the four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment and they had on their heads crowns of gold.

⁴ And I heard the number of them who were sealed: a hundred and forty four thousand were sealed of all the tribes of the children of Israel

¹ And a great sign was seen in heaven, a woman clad with the sun, and the moon was under her feet and on her head a crown of twelve stars;

⁴ And I saw thrones and to them who sat on them judgment was given, and [I saw] the souls of them who had been slain for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God and who had not worshipped the beast nor its image, nor received the mark on their forehead or on their hand. And they lived and reigned with the Christ the thousand years;

¹¹ Then I saw a great white throne and him who sat thereon from whose presence the earth and the heaven fled away and there was no place found for them. ¹² And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God. And books were opened; and another book was opened namely that of Life. And the dead were judged by the writings in those books according to their works. ¹³ And the sea delivered up the dead in it; and death and the mansion of the dead delivered up the dead in them; and they were judged, every one according to his works. ¹⁴ And death and the mansion of the dead were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. ¹⁵ And whoever was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

⁵ And he who sat on the throne said, Behold I make all things new. Then he saith to me, Write that these words are true and faithful;

¹² and it had a great and high wall with twelve gates and at the gates twelve angels and [on the gates] were graven the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel ¹³ On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; on the west three gates. ¹⁴ And the wall of the city had twelve foundations on which were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

² and in the middle of the broad street of the city on both sides of the river at proper distances there was a tree of life bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month and the leaves of the tree are to heal the nations.

¹¹ Happy are ye when men will revile and persecute you, and accuse you falsely of every evil thing on my account.

³³ But seek first the kingdom of God, and the righteousness required by him, and all those things will be superadded to you.

²¹ Another of his disciples said to him, Master, permit me to go first and bury my father. ²² And to him Jesus said, Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.

²² And you will be hated by all men on the account of my name. But he who persevereth to the end shall be saved.

³⁷ He who loveth father or mother more than me, is not worthy of me. And he who loveth son or daughter more than me, is not worthy of me. ³⁸ And he who doth not take up his cross and follow me, is not worthy of me.

⁸ And some fell on good ground and yielded increase; some an hundred; some, sixty; and some, thirty fold.

²³ But that sown on good ground denoteth him who heareth and mindeth the word, and who beareth fruit and bringeth forth, one a hundred, and another sixty, and another thirty fold.

²⁵ For whoever wisheth to save his life shall lose it; and whoever shall lose his life for my sake, shall find it.

¹⁶ And behold there came one who said to him, Good teacher, what good thing shall I do, that I may have an everlasting life?

³⁴ Then the king will say to them on his right, Come ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom which hath been prepared for you from the formation of the world:

²² Happy are you, when men will hate you; even when they will discard and reproach you, and expose your name as infamous on the account of the son of man;

²⁶ If any one cometh to me, and slighteth not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers, and sisters, nay, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.

¹⁹ If ye were of the world, the world would love its own. Now because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

¹⁶ I will shew him what he must suffer for my name.

⁹ things indeed, which as it is written, "Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man conceived; " which God hath prepared for them who love him;

¹⁶ So that henceforth we know no one after the flesh. Nay though we indeed knew Christ after the flesh, yet we now know him so no more.

⁷ for they have gone forth for his name's sake, taking nothing from the Gentiles.

¹¹ Now I say to you that many will come from the east and west, and will be placed at table with Abraham and Isaak and Jacob, in the kingdom of the heavens, ¹² and the children of the kingdom will be cast out into the outer darkness. Weeping and gnashing of teeth will be there.

¹⁶ So the last shall be first, and the first last. For there are many called, but few chosen.

³¹ Which of the two did the will of his father? They say to him, The first. Jesus saith to them, Verily I say to you, The publicans and the harlots lead the way for you to the kingdom of God. ³² For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him. And though you saw this, you did not afterwards repent and believe him.

³¹ But many who are first, shall be last, and the last, first.

²⁹ All the people indeed, even the publicans, when they heard, justified God by submitting to the baptism of John; ³⁰ but the Pharisees and the teachers of the law made null, with regard to themselves, the counsel of God, by not submitting to be baptized by him;

³⁰ And behold there are last, who shall be first; and there are first, who shall be last.

¹³ But the publican, who stood at a distance, did not presume so much as to lift up his eyes to heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying; God, be merciful to me a sinner. ¹⁴ I tell you, this man went down to his house acquitted, and not the other. For whosoever exalteth himself shall be humbled, but he who humbleth himself shall be exalted.

²⁰ Now the law came in a little way, so that transgression abounded, but where sin abounded, favour superabounded, ²¹ that as sin had reigned by death, so favour might reign by means' of a justification for everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

³⁰ What then are we to infer? That the Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness, attained righteousness, but it was a righteousness because of belief; ³¹ but Israel pursuing a law of righteousness did not come up to the law of righteousness. ³² Why?] Because they sought it not from belief; but as if attainable by works of law. For they stumbled at the stumbling stone. ³³ As it is written, "Behold I lay in Sion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offence. "And "whosoever believeth in him shall not be shamed."

⁷ You were running well. Who hath stopped you from obeying the truth?

¹ Let us therefore be afraid, lest having a promise left of entering into His Rest any of us should fall short of it.
