¹ For the reign of the heavens is like a householder who went out early in the morning to hire labourers for his vineyard. ² And having agreed with some labourers for a deniar a day, he sent them to his vineyard. ³ And going out about the third hour he saw some standing in the market place, unemployed, ⁴ and said to them, Go ye also to the vineyard and I will give you what is reasonable. So they went. ⁵ Again about the sixth and ninth hour he went out and did the same. ⁶ And having gone out about the eleventh hour, he found others standing unemployed, and saith to them, Why have you stood here all the day unemployed? ⁷ They say to him, Because no one hath hired us. He saith to them, Go ye also to the vineyard and you shall receive what is reasonable. ⁸ And in the evening the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, Call the labourers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last and ending with the first. ⁹ So they who had been hired at the eleventh hour, came and received even one a deniar. ¹⁰ And when the first hired came, they expected to receive more; but they also received everyone a deniar. ¹¹ And when they received it, they murmured against the householder, ¹² saying, These last have worked but one hour, and thou hast made them equal to us, who have borne the burden, and the heat of the day. ¹³ But he in reply said to one of them, Companion! I do thee no wrong. Didst thou not agree with me for a deniar: ¹⁴ take what is thine and go thy way. It is my will to give this last as much as to thee. ¹⁵ Is it not lawful for me to do what I please with mine own? Is thine eye evil because I am good? ¹⁶ So the last shall be first, and the first last. For there are many called, but few chosen. ¹⁷ As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples apart on the road and said to them, ¹⁸ Behold we are going up to Jerusalem, and the son of man will be delivered up to the chief priests and Scribes; and they will condemn him to death, ¹⁹ and deliver him up to the Gentiles to be mocked, and scourged, and crucified, and on the third day he will rise again. ²⁰ Then the mother of Zebedee's children came to him with her sons, and, prostrating herself, asked a favour of him. ²¹ Whereupon he said to her, What is thy desire? She said to him, Grant that these two sons of mine may sit, one on thy right hand and the other on thy left in thy kingdom. ²² In reply to which Jesus said, You do not know what you ask. Can you drink the cup which I shall soon drink and be baptized with the baptism, with which I am baptized? They say to him, We can. ²³ Then Jesus saith to them, You will indeed drink my cup and be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, unless to them for whom it is prepared by my father. ²⁴ When the ten heard, they were moved with indignation against the two brothers. ²⁵ Whereupon Jesus having called them to him, said, You know that the chiefs of the nations exercise dominion over them; and they who are grandees exercise authority over them: ²⁶ but it shall not be so among you. But whoever among you would wish to be great, let him be your attendant. ²⁷ And whoever among you would wish to be first, let him be your servant; ²⁸ even as the son of man came not to be waited on, but to wait, and to give his life a ransom for many. ²⁹ Now when they were going from Jericho a great multitude followed him. ³⁰ And lo! two blind men who sat by the way side, hearing that Jesus was passing by, cried, saying, Have pity on us, O master, son of David. ³¹ And when the people reprimanded them that they might hold their peace, they cried the louder, saying, Have pity on us, O master, son of David. ³² Whereupon, Jesus, stopping, called them and said, What do you desire me to do for you? ³³ They say to him, Sir! that our eyes may be opened. ³⁴ And Jesus had compassion and touched their eyes; and instantly they received sight. And they followed him.

¹¹ Solomon had a vineyard at Beelamon, he let this vineyard of his to tenants, a man is to give him a thousand pieces of silver for its fruit. ¹² My vineyard which is before me shall continue to be mine. Solomon shall have the thousand pieces of silver, and they who take care of its fruits, two hundred.

¹ Let me sing for the Beloved, a song of my Beloved to His vineyard. The beloved had a vineyard on a mountain in a rich soil, ² and I hedged it around and trenched it; and planted it with the vine of Sorek; and in the midst of it built a tower, and hewed out therein a wine lake; and waited for its producing grapes, and it produced poisonous berries.

³ [J] From the thirteenth year of Josias son of Amos king of Juda even to this day, for three and twenty years I have spoken to you rising early and speaking: ⁴ and I have sent to you my servants the prophets; rising early and sending them, though you have not hearkened nor inclined your ears;

² "Reform; for the reign of the heavens is at hand."

³⁷ Then he saith to his disciples, The harvest indeed is plentiful, but the labourers are few. ³⁸ Supplicate therefore the Lord of the harvest to send forth labourers for his harvest.

²⁴ Another parable he stated to them, saying, The reign of the heavens may be compared to a man sowing good seed in his field.

³¹ Another parable he stated to them, saying, "The reign of the heavens is like a grain of mustard seed which a man took and sowed in his field,

³³ Another parable he stated to them, saying, The reign of the heavens is like leaven which a woman took and covered up in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.

⁴⁴ Again the kingdom of the heavens is like treasure hid in the field, which, when a man found, he concealed, and for joy thereof goeth away and selleth all that he hath, and purchaseth that field. ⁴⁵ Again the kingdom of the heavens is like a merchant in quest of fine pearls,

⁴⁷ Again the kingdom of the heavens is like a sweep net cast into the sea, which enclosed fishes of every kind,

²⁸ But what think you? A man had two sons. And coming to the first, he said, Son, go work today in my vineyard.

³³ Hear another parable. There was a certain landlord who planted a vineyard and hedged it around, and dug therein a wine lake, and built a tower, and let it to tenants and went to a distant country. ³⁴ And when the fruit season approached, he sent his servants to the tenants to receive the fruits of it. ³⁵ But the tenants seizing his servants, beat one and killed another, and stoned another. ³⁶ Again he sent other servants in greater number than the first, and they treated them in the same manner. ³⁷ At last he sent to them his son, saying, They will reverence my son. ³⁸ But when the tenants saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir. Come let us kill him and keep possession of his inheritance. ³⁹ So, seizing him, they turned him out of the vineyard and slew him. ⁴⁰ Now when the lord of the vineyard shall come, what will he do to these tenants? ⁴¹ They say to him, "Wretches! he will put them to a wretched death: and his vineyard he will let to others; who will render him the fruits in their seasons." ⁴² Jesus saith to them, Have you never read in the scriptures, "The stone which the builders rejected was the very one for the head of the corner. This [salvation] was from the Lord, and it is wonderful in our eyes." ⁴³ Therefore I say to you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you and given to a nation producing the fruits thereof.

² The reign of the heavens may be compared to a temporal king, who made a marriage feast for his son.

³⁷ O Jerusalem! Jerusalem! thou that killest the prophets and stonest them who are sent to thee! how often have I desired to gather thy children even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings; but you would not!

¹ Now with respect to this, the reign of the heavens may be compared to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.

¹⁴ For he is like a man who, intending to travel, called his servants and committed to them his effects,

³⁴ As when a man was going to travel, on leaving his family and assigning to his servants their charge, even to even' one his work, he commanded the porter to watch;

¹ I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine dresser.

⁵⁸ So then, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, immoveable, abounding always in the work of the Lord, for as much as you know that your labour in the Lord is not in vain.

²¹ perfect you in every good work, that you may do his will, working in you what is well pleasing in his sight through Jesus Christ: to whom be the glory for the ages of the ages. Amen.

⁵ therefore, having on your part used all diligence for the very same purpose, add to your faith fortitude; and to fortitude, knowledge; ⁶ and to knowledge, temperance; and to temperance, perseverance; and to perseverance, piety; ⁷ and to piety, brotherly affection; and to brotherly affection, universal love; ⁸ for these being in you, and abounding, dispose you to be neither idle nor unfruitful for the acknowledging of our Lord Jesus Christ: ⁹ for he who is without these is blind, having closed his eyes, having contracted a forgetfulness of the purification of his past sins. ¹⁰ Therefore, brethren, use the more diligence to make your call and election sure; for if you practise these you will never fall;

⁵ Now therefore if you will hearken diligently to my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be to me a peculiar people above all the nations; for the whole earth is mine: ⁶ but as for you, you shall be a royal priesthood and a holy nation. These words thou shalt deliver to the children of Israel.

²⁷ Go thou near, and hear all that the Lord our God may say, and thou shalt rehearse to us all that the Lord our God may speak to thee, and we will hear and do it. ²⁸ And the Lord heard the sound of your words when you spoke to me. And the Lord said to me, I have heard the sound of the words of this people, even all that they have spoken to thee. All that they have said is right. ²⁹ O that they may have their heart so disposed in them as to fear me, and to keep my commandments continually, that it may be well with them, and their children for ever. ³⁰ Go say to them, Return to your houses.

¹⁸ But Samuel ministered before the Lord, being a child girded with a linen ephod.

²⁶ But the child Samuel proceeded on, and was in favour with the Lord, and with men.

¹ Now when the child Samuel was ministering to the Lord before Eli the priest [in those days the word of the Lord was precious; there was no distinct vision]

²¹ And the Lord continued to manifest himself at Selom; for the Lord revealed himself to Samuel, and it was confidently believed that Samuel would be the prophet of the Lord to all Israel, from one end of the land to the other.

¹¹ Then Samuel said to Jessai, Are these all thy children? And he said, There is still one more, the youngest. Behold he is tending the flock. And Samuel said to Jessai, Send for him; for we cannot sit down till he come. ¹² So he sent for him. Now he was of a ruddy complexion, with beautiful eyes, and comely in appearance to the Lord, and the Lord said to Samuel, Arise and anoint David, for he is good.

⁶ Thereupon Solomon said, Thou hast shewn great kindness to thy servant David my father. As he walked before thee in truth and righteousness and in uprightness of heart with thee, thou therefore hast kept for him this great kindness to set his son on his throne as at this day. ⁷ Now therefore, Lord my God, as thou hast appointed me thy servant in the room of my father David, and I am but a little child and know not how to go out and come in, ⁸ and thy servant is in the midst of thy people whom thou hast chosen, an immense people which cannot be numbered, ⁹ give therefore to thy servant a heart to hear and to judge thy people righteously, and to discern between good and evil; for who can judge this thy people, ¹⁰ this great people which is so numerous? And it was well pleasing in the sight of the Lord that Solomon made this request; ¹¹ therefore the Lord said to him, Because thou hast asked this of me, and hast not asked for thyself many days, nor riches, nor the life of thine enemies, but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment,

¹² But it may be, that when I am gone from thee, the Spirit of the Lord will carry thee away to a land which I know not. So that when I shall go and tell Achab, and he shall not find thee, he will kill me. Now thy servant is one who feareth the Lord from his youth.

³ In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still a youth, he began to seek the Lord the God of his father David. And in the twelfth year of his reign, he began to cleanse Juda and Jerusalem, from the high places and the bowers, and from their processions around altars, and from the molten images.

¹ Because youth and thoughtlessness is vanity, therefore remember thy Creator in the days of thy youth; before the evil days come and the years draw nigh in which thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them.

²⁸ And as that servant was going out, he met one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred deniars and seizing him by the throat, he said, Pay me what thou owest.

¹³ But he in reply said to one of them, Companion! I do thee no wrong. Didst thou not agree with me for a deniar:

¹⁹ Shew me the tribute money. So they brought him a deniar,

¹⁵ For he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He must not drink wine, nor any fermented liquor. With a holy spirit he will be filled, even from his mother's womb.

³⁵ And the next morning, when he was departing, he took out two deniars, and gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, Take care of this man: and whatever thou expendest more, I will pay thee when I return.

¹⁵ and that, from thy childhood, thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise for salvation by trusting in Christ Jesus.

⁶ And I heard a voice in the midst of the four animate beings, saying, A choenix of wheat for a deniar and three choenices of barley for a deniar, but hurt not the oil and the wine."

¹⁵ Fear restraineth the effeminate; but the soul of the slothful shall suffer want.

⁴⁹ But this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom; Pride. Through fulness of bread and prosperity she and her daughters grew wanton. There was this also in her and her daughters that they did not assist the distressed and the needy;

¹⁶ Now to what shall I compare this generation? It is like boys in the market place who call to their playfellows, ¹⁷ saying, "We have played to you on the pipe, but you have not danced; We have sung to you songs of woe, and you have not lamented."

⁶ And having gone out about the eleventh hour, he found others standing unemployed, and saith to them, Why have you stood here all the day unemployed? ⁷ They say to him, Because no one hath hired us. He saith to them, Go ye also to the vineyard and you shall receive what is reasonable.

²⁵ Now it was the third hour when they nailed him to the cross:

¹⁵ for these men are not drunk as you suppose; for it is but the third hour of the day.

¹⁷ Therefore he discoursed in the synagogue to the Jews and proselytes, and in the forum daily to them who met him. ¹⁸ And while some of the epicurean and stoic philosophers were conferring with him, some said, "What would this retailer of scraps say?" And others, "He appeareth to be a proclaimer of strange deities." Because he proclaimed the glad tidings of Jesus and the resurrection, ¹⁹ therefore they took hold of him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine is which is spoken by thee. ²⁰ For thou bringest some strange things to our ears. .We wish therefore to know what these things mean. ²¹ Now all the Athenians, and the foreigners who reside among them, spent their leisure time in nothing else but in telling and hearing news.

¹³ Add to this, that, being idle, they learn to ramble from house to house, and are not only idle, but are indeed tatlers, and intermedlers, speaking tilings which are unbecoming.

¹² that you may not become languid, but imitators of them who through faith and long suffering inherit the promises.

⁹ When Jesus was going thence he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the custom house; and he saith to him, Follow me. Whereupon he arose and followed him.

²³ And when he was come to the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority dost thou these things? And, Who gave thee this authority? ²⁴ In reply to which, Jesus saith to them, Let me also ask you a question, which if you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I do these things. ²⁵ Whence was the baptism of John? From heaven, or of men? Upon this they reasoned among themselves, saying, if we say, From heaven, he will say, Why then did you not believe him: ²⁶ and if we say, Of men, we fear the people; for they all hold John as a prophet. ²⁷ So in answer to Jesus, they said, We cannot tell. Thereupon Jesus said, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things. ²⁸ But what think you? A man had two sons. And coming to the first, he said, Son, go work today in my vineyard.

³⁰ And he in reply said, I will not. But afterwards he repented and went. And coming to the second, he ordered him in like manner; and he in reply said, I will, sir; but did not go. ³¹ Which of the two did the will of his father? They say to him, The first. Jesus saith to them, Verily I say to you, The publicans and the harlots lead the way for you to the kingdom of God.

⁷ When the multitude saw this they murmured, saying, He is gone to be entertained by a sinner. ⁸ Whereupon Zaccheus, standing up, said to the Lord, Behold, Sir, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have wronged any man, I make him fourfold restitution: ⁹ and Jesus said concerning him, Today salvation is come to this house, as this man is indeed a son of Abraham; ¹⁰ for the son of man came to seek and save what was lost.

¹⁶ Do you not know that to whatsoever you deliver yourselves up as servants at command, you are the slaves of that which you obey, whether it be of sin for death; or of obedience for righteousness. ¹⁷ But thanks be to God, that though you were slaves of sin, yet from the heart you have conformed to the mould of doctrine in which you were cast, ¹⁸ and being freed from sin, have become servants of righteousness. ¹⁹ [I speak in the language of human affairs because of the weakness of your flesh,] for as you yielded up your members to iniquity, as slavish instruments of uncleanness and all manner of iniquity, so now yield up your members as servants to righteousness for sanctification. ²⁰ For when you were servants of sin"when you were at a loose from righteousness, ²¹ what fruit therefore had you then from those things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of them is death. ²² But being now set free from sin and become servants of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and in the end, everlasting life.

¹¹ Now such some of you were; but, you have washed yourselves; but you are hallowed, but you are acquitted by the name of the Lord Jesus and by the spirit of our God.

¹ Masters, render to your servants what is just and equitable; knowing that you have a master in heaven.

¹² and am thankful to Christ Jesus our Lord who qualified me; for his counting me faithful, putting into office me ¹³ who was before a reviler, and a persecutor, and an outrageous offender: but I obtained mercy because I acted ignorantly, in unbelief.

⁸ This is a faithful word; and in respect to these things I charge thee to exert thy utmost influence in order that they who believe in God, may study to be foremost in good works. These are the things which are comely, and profitable for men.

¹³ Wherefore having girded up the loins of your understanding, being perfectly sober, keep your hope fixed on the favour to be conferred on you at the manifestation of Jesus Christ;

² to the end that he may no longer live the rest of his time in flesh for the lusts of men; but for the will of God. ³ For the past time of this life sufficeth to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, walking in lasciviousness, inordinate desires, excess of wine, revels, carouses, and abominable idolatries;

¹ Now the Lord said to Abram, Depart from thy land and from thy kindred and from the house of thy father and come to the land which I will shew thee, ² and I will make thee a great nation; and I will bless thee and make thy name great, and thou shalt be blessed; ³ and I will bless them, who bless thee; and those who curse thee I will curse: and by thee all the tribes of the earth shalt be blessed. ⁴ So Abram went as the Lord commanded him, and Lot went with him. Now Abram was seventy five years old when he came out of Charran.

² Joshua said to all the people, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, your fathers dwelt in old time Beyond the river, namely, Thara, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor. And they served other gods. ³ And I took your father Abraham from Beyond the river, and led him through all this land, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaak;

¹² And when he was afflicted he sought the favour of the Lord his God, and humbled himself exceedingly before the God of his fathers, ¹³ and prayed to him, and he hearkened to him and heard his cry, and brought him back to Jerusalem to his kingdom. So Manasses knew that the Lord himself is God. ¹⁴ Now after these things he built a wall without the city of David, from the south west, fronting the south in the valley and along the street leading from the fish gate round to Opel, and raised it very high, and appointed military officers in all the walled cities of Juda. ¹⁵ And he removed the strange gods and the graven image out of the house of the Lord, and all the altars which he had built on the mount of the house of the Lord, and in Jerusalem, and without the city. ¹⁶ And having repaired the altar of the Lord he offered thereon a sacrifice of thanksgiving and praise, and ordered Juda to serve the Lord God of Israel. ¹⁷ But still the people sacrificed on the high places, but it was to the Lord their God. ¹⁸ Now the rest of the acts of Manasses, and his prayer to God, and the words of the seers who spoke to him in the name of the God of Israel; ¹⁹ and how God hearkened to him at the words of his prayer; and all his sins and his apostasies; and the places on which he built mounts and erected bowers, and graven images before his conversion; behold they are written among the words of the seers.

⁴⁵ Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over the whole land till the ninth hour:

³³ But when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land, until the ninth hour. ³⁴ And at the ninth hour, Jesus cried with aloud voice, saying, "Eloi, Eloi, Lama sabachthani" which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, Why hast thou forsaken me?

⁴⁴ It was now about the sixth hour, and there came darkness over the whole land until the ninth, ⁴⁵ when the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent down the middle; ⁴⁶ and Jesus crying with a loud voice, said, Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit. And having said this he expired.

³⁹ He saith to them, Come and see. They went and saw where he made his abode, and staid with him that day; for it was about the tenth hour.

⁶ Now Jacob's well was there. And as Jesus, wearied as he was with the journey, was sitting by the well, [it was about the sixth hour]

⁹ Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any one walketh in the day he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world:

¹ Now at the same time that Peter and John were going up2 to the temple at the hour of prayer, namely, at the ninth hour,

³ About the ninth hour of the day, he saw plainly in a vision, an angel of God coming in to him and saying to him, Cornelius!

⁹ And on the next day while they were on their journey and approaching towards the city, Peter went up on the house top to pray, about the sixth hour.

²⁴ By faith Moses, when he was become great, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, ²⁵ chusing rather to suffer afflictions with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; ²⁶ accounting the reproach of the Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he had an eye to the reward.

¹⁰ Whatever thy hand findeth to do, do it with all thy might; since there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge nor wisdom in the mansion of the dead to which thou must go.

⁴⁰ Upon which the other, in reply, rebuked him, saying, Hast thou no fear of God even when thou art suffering the same punishment? ⁴¹ We indeed justly; for we are receiving the due reward of our crimes. But this man hath done nothing amiss. ⁴² Then he said to Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest to thy kingdom. ⁴³ Whereupon Jesus said to him, Verily I say to thee, Today thou shalt be with me in paradise.

⁴ I must work the works of him who sent me, while it is day. Night is coming, when no one can work.

²¹ Now all the Athenians, and the foreigners who reside among them, spent their leisure time in nothing else but in telling and hearing news.

⁹ Go ye therefor, to the highways, and invite to the wedding as many as you meet with. ¹⁰ Accordingly the servants went out to the highway and assembled all that they met, bad and good. And the wedding was plentifully supplied with guests.

²¹ So the servant came and told his master these things. And the master of the family, being incensed, said to his servant, Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor and the maimed, and the lame, and the blind. ²² And when the servant said, Master, I have done as thou didst command, and still there is room; ²³ the master said to the servant, Go out to the highways and hedges, and press people to come that my house may be full.

¹⁶ saying, What can we do with these men? For that a signal miracle hath indeed been done by them, is manifest to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.

³⁰ God indeed having overlooked the ages of this ignorance; now maketh proclamation to all men every where to reform, ³¹ because he hath appointed a day in which he will judge the world righteously, by a man whom he hath pointed out: of which he hath given assurance to all men, by raising him. from the dead.

¹⁴ How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in him, of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a proclaimer? ¹⁵ and how shall they proclaim, unless they be sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of them who proclaim the joyful message of peace"who proclaim the glad tidings of good things." ¹⁶ But all have not duly hearkened to the good news, for Esaias saith, "Lord, who hath believed this report of ours." ¹⁷ The believing is indeed because of hearing, and what they heard is by the order of God.

²⁵ Now to him who is able to establish you according to my glad tidings and the proclamation of Jesus Christ; according to the disclosure of a secret which was concealed in times of old,

¹¹ Wherefore remember that you were formerly the nations in flesh, those denominated uncircumcision by the nominal circumcision made with hands, in flesh ¹² that you were at that time without Christ; aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of the promise, having no hope, and being without God in the world:

⁵ which in former generations was not made known to the children of men as it hath now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the spirit,] ⁶ That the nations are coheirs, and a joint body, and joint partakers of that promise of his in the Christ by means of the gospel,

⁸ knowing that whatever good any one doth, the Lord will reward him for it, whether he be a bondman or freeman.

²⁶ the mystery which was hidden from the ages and from the generations, but is now manifested to his saints;

¹⁰ For God is not unjust to forget your work, and the labour of that love which you have shewn for his name, by the assistance which you have given and continue to give to the saints.

² Whereupon Abram said, sovereign Lord, what wilt thou give me, seeing I die childless, and the son of Masek my servant, this Damascus Eliezer;

⁴ So Joseph found favour in the sight of his master; and he was pleased with him and set him over his household and committed all that he had to Joseph's charge. ⁵ And after he had made him overseer of his household, and over all that he had, the Lord blessed the house of the Egyptian for Joseph's sake; and there was a blessing of the Lord on all his substance, in his house and in his field. ⁶ So he left to Joseph's management all that he had, and knew not any thing he had save the bread which he ate. Now Joseph was a comely person an of a very beautiful countenance,

¹⁹ Therefore they went near to the man the steward of Joseph's house and spoke to him at the gate of the house saying,

¹³ thou shalt nut injure thy neighbour, nor commit rapine; nor shall the wages of a hireling remain with thee till the morning.

¹⁵ Thou shalt pay him his wages on the very day: let not the sun set upon it. For he is poor, and dependeth on it; and he will cry to the Lord against thee, and it will be a sin in thee.

³⁹ The enemy who sowed it is the devil. The harvest is the conclusion of the age, and angels are the reapers. ⁴⁰ As the darnel therefore is gathered and burned with fire, so shall it be at the conclusion of this age.

¹⁹ and after a long time the master of these servants cometh and reckoneth with them:

³¹ So when the son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him; he will then sit on the throne of his glory.

³ and Joanna the wife of Chusa, Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, who ministered to him out of their possessions.

⁷ continue in the same family, eating and drinking such things as they have. For the labourer is worthy of his wages. Go not from one family to another.

⁴² Thereupon the Lord said, Who is indeed the faithful and prudent steward, whom his master shall have set over his family to dispense regularly the stated allowance of food?

¹ Then he said to his disciples, There was a certain rich man who had a steward. And this steward was accused of having wasted his substance. ² So having called him, he said to him, What is this that I hear of thee? Give an account of thy stewardship; for thou canst no longer be steward.

⁶ who will render to every one according to his works ⁷ to them who by perseverance in well-doing, seek for glory and honour, and incorruption [he will grant] everlasting life; ⁸ but for them who are contentious and disobedient to the truth and in subjection to unrighteousness, there will be indignation and wrath, ⁹ tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man who doth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Greek; ¹⁰ but glory and honour and peace, for every one who doth good; for the Jew first, and also for the Greek.

¹ In this manner let a man reckon us, as servants of Christ and stewards of divine mysteries. ² Now that, which is principally required in a steward, is, that he be found faithful.

¹⁰ For we must all appear before the judgment seat of the Christ, that every one may receive according to what he hath done in this bodily state, whether good or evil.

⁷ For the overseer ought to be blameless as God's steward, not self willed, not passionate, not addicted to wine, not quarrelsome, not greedy of sordid gain;

²⁸ so also the Christ, being once offered up to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, without a sin offering, for the salvation of them who wait for him.

¹⁰ According as every one hath received a free gift continue dispensing it to each other as good stewards of the manifold grace of God

¹¹ Then I saw a great white throne and him who sat thereon from whose presence the earth and the heaven fled away and there was no place found for them. ¹² And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God. And books were opened; and another book was opened namely that of Life. And the dead were judged by the writings in those books according to their works.

² And having agreed with some labourers for a deniar a day, he sent them to his vineyard.

³ For what saith the scripture, "And Abraham believed God and it was reckoned to him for righteousness." ⁴ Now to him who worketh the reward is not reckoned a favour, but a debt. ⁵ But to him who doth not work, but believeth in him who acquitteth the ungodly, his belief is placed to account for righteousness. ⁶ As David also saith in respect to the happiness of the man to whose account God placeth righteousness without works,

²⁰ Now the law came in a little way, so that transgression abounded, but where sin abounded, favour superabounded, ²¹ that as sin had reigned by death, so favour might reign by means' of a justification for everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

⁶ for the praise of the glory of that favour of his with which he made us objects of favour in the Beloved; ⁷ by whom we have this redemption by his blood; the forgiveness of our sins according to the richness of his grace ⁸ in which he hath abounded for us

⁸ For by grace you are saved by means of this belief. And even this is not of yourselves; it is the gift of God. ⁹ It is not because of works; so that no one can boast. ¹⁰ For we are his workmanship, fitted by Christ Jesus for good works, for which God had before prepared us that we might walk therein.

¹⁴ And this favour of our Lord superabounded with faith and love which is by Christ Jesus. ¹⁵ This is a faithful word and worthy of all acceptation, That Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom I am a chief; ¹⁶ but I obtained mercy for this purpose, that Jesus Christ might display the utmost forbearance in me, a chief, for an example to them who should afterwards trust in him for everlasting life.

³⁰ Whereupon their Scribes and the Pharisees expressed their dissatisfaction to his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?

² when the Pharisees and the Scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners and eateth with them;

²⁸ At this he was angry and would not go in. His father therefore went out and entreated him. ²⁹ But he answering, said to his father, Behold these many years that I have served thee without ever disobeying thy command, thou hast never given me a kid, that I might be merry with my friends: ³⁰ but soon as this son of thine is come, who hath devoured thy substance with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf.

⁷ When the multitude saw this they murmured, saying, He is gone to be entertained by a sinner.

² So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, they of the circumcision cavilled at him, ³ saying, Thou hast gone to men who are uncircumcised, and hast eaten with them.

⁴⁵ But when the Jews saw the crowds they were filled with zeal and contradicted what was spoken by Paul; contradicting and reviling.

²¹ And he said to me, Depart, for I will send thee to far distant nations. ²² Now till that Word they had continued listening to him; then they raised their voice saying, Away with such a one from the earth, for it is not fit that he should live.

¹⁶ hindering us from speaking to the nations that they may be saved; thus, filling up the measure of their sins continually: but the wrath is at last coming upon them,]

¹⁶ They are discontented mumurers, walking after their own lusts. Though their mouth speaketh swelling words, they hold persons in admiration for the sake of gain.

² Day after day they seek me, and desire to know my ways; like a people who have practised righteousness, and who have not forsaken the ordinance of God. They now ask of me a just decision and desire to draw near to God. ³ Saying, "Why have we fasted and thou hast not seen? We have humbled our souls and thou hast not known." In the very days of your fasts you enjoy your own pleasures and goad all them who are under your controul.

⁸ And when the sun rose God ordered a burning wind to spring up and the sun beat upon Jonas' head so that he became fainty and abandoned himself to despair and said, It is better for me to die than to live.

³ saying to the priests who were at the house of the Lord Almighty, and saying to the prophets, The dedication came hither in the fifth month as it hath done now for many years. ⁴ Then a word of the Lord of hosts came to me saying, ⁵ Speak to all the people of the land and to the priests, saying, Though you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh months, lo! for seventy years; did you keep a fast for me?

¹³ you said, "These are because of affliction, "and though I rejected them, saith the Lord Almighty, yet you offered the torn, the lame and the sickly; if then you bring this sacrifice shall I accept such at your hands, saith the Lord Almighty,

¹⁴ You say, "Vain is he who serveth God: and what advantage is it, that we have kept his charges. For though we have walked as supplicants before the Lord Almighty,

⁵⁵ And when the south wind bloweth, you say, It will be hot. And so it happeneth.

¹⁰ But when thou art invited, go and take the lowest place, that when he who invited thee cometh, he may say to thee, Friend, go up higher. Then thou wilt have honour in the sight of them who are at table with thee. ¹¹ For whoever exalteth himself, shall be humbled, and he who humbleth. himself, shall be exalted.

¹¹ The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus, O God, I thank thee that I am not as the rest of men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers; nor even as that publican. ¹² I fast twice a week. I pay tithes of all that I possess.

²² even a justification, of God's appointment, by faith in Jesus Christ, for all and upon all who believe; for there is no distinction; ²³ for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. ²⁴ They are justified freely by his grace through the redemption which is by Christ Jesus,

²⁷ Where then is this boasting? It is excluded. By what law? By that of works? No; but by a law of belief.

³⁰ since it is one and the same God who will justify circumcision because of belief and uncircumcision by the same belief.

³⁰ What then are we to infer? That the Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness, attained righteousness, but it was a righteousness because of belief; ³¹ but Israel pursuing a law of righteousness did not come up to the law of righteousness. ³² Why?] Because they sought it not from belief; but as if attainable by works of law. For they stumbled at the stumbling stone.

¹ Brethren, the earnest desire of my heart and my supplication to God for Israel is, that they may be saved. ² For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. ³ For being ignorant of the righteousness of God's appointment, and seeking to establish a righteousness of their own, they did not submit themselves to God's righteousness.

⁵ In like manner, therefore, at this present time there is a remnant according to a choice of favour. ⁶ Now if it be by favour, it is no more in consideration of works, since in this case the favour be no favour: but if it be in consideration of works it is no more of favour, otherwise the work is no work.

¹¹ Even at this very moment we are hungry and thirsty and naked and buffeted, and are wandering about and weary,

²³ Are they ministers of Christ? [I speak with an excess of folly] I am more so; more abundant in labours; far surpassing in stripes; more frequent in imprisonments, often in deaths. ²⁴ Of the Jews I five times received forty stripes save one. ²⁵ Thrice I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Thrice I have been shipwrecked. In the deep I spent a whole night and day. ²⁶ On journeys I have been frequently in dangers from rivers; in dangers from robbers; in dangers from my country men; in dangers from foreign nations; in dangers in cities; in dangers in a wilderness; in dangers at sea; in dangers among false brethren: ²⁷ In toil and fatigue, in watchings many a time, with hunger and thirst; in fastings many a time, with cold and nakedness. ²⁸ Beside these things from without, I have this disturbance daily crowding upon me; the anxious care of all the congregations.

⁶ That the nations are coheirs, and a joint body, and joint partakers of that promise of his in the Christ by means of the gospel,

¹¹ For the sun riseth with its scorching heat, and withereth the blade, and the flower thereof failleth, and its beautiful appearance is gone. Just so will the rich man be blasted in his pursuits.

²⁵ Thou canst not do such a thing as this to slay the righteous with the wicked. Shall the righteous be as the wicked? No, no; Thou who judgest the whole earth; wilt not thou execute judgment?

⁸ who hath neither sinned, nor been guilty of impiety; nor associated with the workers of iniquity to walk with impious men? ⁹ For thou shouldst not say, There shall be no visitation of man. He shall indeed have a visitation from the Lord. ¹⁰ Therefore hearken to me, ye who are wise in heart. Far be it from me to be profane before the Lord; or before the Almighty to disturb the course of justice. ¹¹ "But he should render to every man according to each one's work; so that in his own paths every man may find him." ¹² But dost thou think that the Lord will do improper things? Or will the Almighty who made the earth, pervert judgment?

¹⁷ Consider that he who hateth iniquity; and that he who destroyeth the wicked, being eternal, is just. ¹⁸ He is irreverent, who saith to a king, Thou transgressest: to princes, you are acting impiously.

² What thinkest thou of this in thy pleading? Who art thou that thou shouldst say, "I am righteous before the Lord?"

⁸ Decline not the trial with Me. Dost thou think that I have spoken to thee for any other purpose, but that thou mayst appear justified?

¹² Companion, how camest thou hither without having on a wedding garment. And he was struck speechless.

⁵⁰ And Jesus said to him, Companion! for what purpose art thou come? Then others, advancing, laid hands on Jesus, and held him.

¹⁴ What then shall we say"? Is there injustice with God? No by no means. ¹⁵ For to Moses he saith, "I will have mercy on whomsoever I please to have mercy'? and I will have compassion on whomsoever I please to compassionate.

²⁰ But who art thou, O man, who enterest into a dispute with God? Shall the thing formed say to him who formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?

¹⁶ and said, Come with me and see my zeal for the Lord. So he caused him to take a seat in the chariot.

³⁰ Though the Lord said to Jehu, Because thou hast taken a pleasure in doing what is right in my sight, and hast done to the house of Achab according to all that was in my heart, thy children of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel; ³¹ yet Jehu was not careful to walk in the law of the Lord God of Israel with his whole heart. He did not refrain from following the sins of Jeroboam who had caused Israel to sin.

¹⁸ Son of man, Nabuchodonosar king of Babylon hath caused his army to undergo hard service at Tyre. Every head is bald and every shoulder peeled; and he and his army employed against Tyre, have received no wages; though they have undergone hard service against it. ¹⁹ Thus saith the Lord, Behold I will give to Nabuchodonosar king of Babylon the land of Egypt. And he shall make a prey of its prey, and a spoil of its spoil. And it shall be wages for his army. ²⁰ For his service which he hath performed against Tyre, 1 have given him the land of Egypt. Thus saith the Lord, Lord;

² Therefore when thou dost an act of charity, sound not a trumpet before thee as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets that they may be extolled by men. Verily I say to you, they have their reward.

⁶ But as for thee, when thou wouldst pray, retire to thy closet, and having shut the door pray to thy father who is in secret, and thy father who seeth in secret will reward thee openly.

¹⁶ And when you fast, be not like the hypocrites, of a dismal countenance; for they disfigure their faces, that men may observe that they are fasting. Verily I say to you, They have their reward.

³¹ In reply, to which his father said to him, Son, thou art always with me; and all that I have is thine.

²⁵ And Abraham said, Son, remember that thou receivedst thy good things in thy life time; and Lazarus in like manner, his evil things. But now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

² that, as thou hast given him power over all flesh, he may, according to all that thou hast given him, give to these everlasting life.

⁴ No, by no means. Yea, let God be true, though every man be a liar, as it is written, " So that thou must be justified in thy acts and must overcome when thou art judged."

¹⁹ Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world stand convicted before God.

¹⁹ And he said, I will go before thee with my glory and I will call by my name The Lord, before thee; and I will have mercy on whom I please to have mercy; and I will have compassion on whomsoever I compassionate;

⁶ For thou art a people dedicated to the Lord thy God, and the Lord thy God hath chosen thee, to be a peculiar people to himself, in preference to all the nations which are on the face of the earth. ⁷ It was not because you were the most numerous of all the nations, that the Lord preferred you, and made choice of you; for you are the fewest of all the nations: ⁸ but because the Lord loved you, therefore in performance of the oath which he swore to your fathers, the Lord led you out with a strong hand, and the Lord redeemed thee from the house of bondage, out of the hand of Pharao king of Egypt.

⁹ Take heed to thyself that there be not a lurking thought in thy heart; a wicked suggestion, saying, The seventh year, the year of remission is near at hand. When thou shalt look with an evil eye at thy brother who is in want, and not give him, he will cry to the Lord against thee, and it will be a great sin in thee.

⁵⁴ The tender, and very delicate man who is with thee, will look with an evil eye on his brother, and on the wife in his bosom, and the remaining children which may be left him,

⁴ Now the Lord God of Israel chose me in preference to all my father's house to be king over Israel forever, As he chose the royalty in Juda, and my father's house out of the house of Juda and among the sons of my father, it was his pleasure that I should be king over all Israel; ⁵ so in preference to all my sons, for the Lord hath given me many sons, he hath made choice of my son Solomon, to set him on the throne of the Lord's kingdom, over Israel.

⁶ Eat not with an envious man, nor desire his meats:

²² An envious man hasteth to be rich, and knoweth not that the bountiful shall have mastery over him.

⁵ As I have made the earth by my great power and by my outstretched arm, I can give it to whom it seemeth good in mine eyes. ⁶ I have given this land to Nabuchodonosar king of Babylon to serve him, and the beasts of the field to work for him. ⁷ [Omitted]

¹ Thereupon Jonas was exceedingly grieved and confounded, ² and he prayed to the Lord and said, Lord were not these my words, when I was yet in my own country? For which cause I attempted to flee to Tharsis. For I knew that thou art compassionate and merciful, long suffering and abundant in kindness and relentest at evils. ³ Now, therefore, Sovereign Lord, take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live. ⁴ And the Lord said to Jonas, Art thou very sorry?

²³ but if thine eye be distempered, thy whole body will be dark. If then the light which is in thee be darkness, how great will the darkness be!

²⁵ At that time Jesus took occasion to say, I thank thee, O father, Lord of heaven and earth; that thou having hid these things from the wise and prudent, hast revealed them to babes.

²² thefts, inordinate desires, malice, fraud, sensuality, envy, detraction, pride, foolishness.

¹⁵ For to Moses he saith, "I will have mercy on whomsoever I please to have mercy'? and I will have compassion on whomsoever I please to compassionate. ¹⁶ Therefore it is not of him who willeth, nor of him who runneth, but of God, who sheweth mercy. ¹⁷ For the scripture saith to Pharaoh, "I have raised thee up for this purpose that by thee I may display my power; and that my name may be celebrated throughout all the earth." ¹⁸ Well then, he sheweth mercy to whom he pleaseth, and hardeneth whom he pleaseth, ¹⁹ wilt thou then say to me, Why doth he yet find fault, for who hath resisted his will? ²⁰ But who art thou, O man, who enterest into a dispute with God? Shall the thing formed say to him who formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? ²¹ Hath not the potter power over the clay to make, out of the same lump, one vessel for honour, and another for dishonour? ²² What if God willing to manifest his wrath and make known his power, did with much long suffering, bear with the vessels of wrath fitted for destruction, ²³ to the end that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy which he had previously prepared for glory ²⁴ even us whom he hath called not only from among the Jews, but also from among the Gentiles.

⁷ for one [teacher] against another. For who distinguisheth thee? Or what hast thou, which thou didst not receive? Now if thou hast received, why boastest thou as if thou hadst not received?

¹¹ by whom we, [having been previously marked out in a determinate manner, according to the purpose of him who effecteth all things according to the counsel of his will] were made his inheritance,

¹ And with respect to you, when you were dead in those trespasses, and those sins,

⁵ even when we were dead in those trespasses, did bring us to life with the Christ, [by grace you are saved]

⁹ Repine not, brethren, against one another, that you may not be condemned. Behold the judge is at the door.

¹³ Enter in at the strait gate. Because the gate is wide and the way broad which leadeth to destruction, therefore many there are who go in through it:

¹¹ Now I say to you that many will come from the east and west, and will be placed at table with Abraham and Isaak and Jacob, in the kingdom of the heavens, ¹² and the children of the kingdom will be cast out into the outer darkness. Weeping and gnashing of teeth will be there.

³⁰ But many will be first who are last; and last, who are first.

³¹ Which of the two did the will of his father? They say to him, The first. Jesus saith to them, Verily I say to you, The publicans and the harlots lead the way for you to the kingdom of God.

¹⁴ For there are many called, but few chosen.

³¹ But many who are first, shall be last, and the last, first.

⁴⁷ For what reason? I tell thee. Her sins which are many, are forgiven her; therefore her love is great. But he to whom little is forgiven, hath little love.

²⁸ Weeping and gnashing of teeth will be there, when you shall see Abraham, and Isaak, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves cast out. ²⁹ People indeed will come from the east and west, and from the north and south, and be entertained in the kingdom of God. ³⁰ And behold there are last, who shall be first; and there are first, who shall be last.

²⁴ For I say to you, None of the men who have been invited shall taste of my supper.

⁷ Thus, I assure you, there will be greater joy in heaven for one reforming sinner, than for ninety nine righteous persons who have no need of reformation.

¹⁷ Upon this, Jesus addressing him, said, Were not the ten cleansed? Where then are the nine? ¹⁸ Have none returned to give glory to God, but only this alien?

¹⁹ therefore the Pharisees said among themselves, You see that you gain no advantage. Behold the world is gone after him. ²⁰ Now among them who came up to worship at the festival, there were some Greeks. ²¹ These therefore came to Philip, who was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, Sir, We wish to see Jesus. ²² Philip cometh and telleth Andrew. And Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.

²⁰ Now the law came in a little way, so that transgression abounded, but where sin abounded, favour superabounded,

³⁰ And those whom he marked out beforehand he actually called, and those whom he called, even these he acquitted, and those whom he acquitted even these he glorified.

³⁰ What then are we to infer? That the Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness, attained righteousness, but it was a righteousness because of belief;

¹³ On this account also we give thanks to God continually, because, when you received from us this message of God, you embraced it, not as a word of men, but, as it really is, a word of God, which operateth with powerful effect in you who believe.

¹³ Now we ought to give thanks to God always for you, brethren, beloved of the Lord, because God hath, from the beginning, chosen you for salvation by a sanctification of spirit and a belief of the truth ¹⁴ to which he hath called you by our glad tidings, to be an acquisition of glory to our Lord Jesus Christ.

²³ For if any one is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man viewing his natural face in a glass. ²⁴ For having viewed himself, and gone away, he instantly forgot what manner of person he was. ²⁵ But whosoever hath looked carefully into the perfect law of this liberty, and continued therein; he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of work, shall by his doing be happy.

¹⁷ And the Lord said, Shall I hide from my servant Abraham, what I am going to do?

¹¹ And he in reply said to them, To you it hath been granted to know the secrets of the reign of the heavens; but to them it hath not been granted.

¹³ When Jesus was going to Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Who do men say that I, the son of man, am?

³² When they were on the way up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking before them, they were seized with a horror, and followed him with fear. Whereupon1 Jesus, again taking the twelve aside, took occasion to tell them what would soon befal him. ³³ Behold, said he, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the son of man will be delivered up to the chief priests, and the Scribes; and they will condemn him to death, and deliver him up to the Gentiles, ³⁴ who will insult him, and scourge him, and spit upon him, and put him to death; and on the third day he will rise again.

³¹ Then having taken the twelve aside he said to them, Behold we are going up to Jerusalem, and all that the prophets have written concerning the son of man, will be accomplished. ³² For he will be delivered up to the Gentiles, and will be mocked and insulted, and spit upon. ³³ And when they have scourged him, they will put him to death. And on the third day he will rise again. ³⁴ But they understood nothing of these things. This matter indeed was hid from them, so that they did not comprehend the meaning of what was spoken.

¹² On the next day a great multitude who had come to the festival, hearing that Jesus is coming to Jerusalem,

¹⁵ I no longer call you servants; because the servant doth not know what his master doth. But I have called you friends, because I have made known to you all that I heard from my Father.

⁴¹ not to all the people, but to witnesses who were preappointed by God; to us who have eaten, and drunk with him after he arose from the dead.

¹ Why did nations rage? And tribes meditate vain things? ² The kings of the earth combined; and the chiefs assembled together, against the Lord and against his Anointed, [saying] ³ "Let us break their bands asunder and throw off from us their yoke."

¹ For the conclusion. On the help of the morning. A Psalm by David. God, my God! attend to me! why hast thou forsaken me? have the acts of my transgressions [removed thee] far from saving me? ² my God, shall I cry to thee by day, and thou not listen, and by night, and thou not hear me? ³ Thou indeed dwellest in a holy place; thou art the praise of Israel. ⁴ In thee our fathers placed their trust; they trusted and thou didst deliver them. To thee they cried and they were saved; ⁵ in thee they trusted and were not put to shame. ⁶ As for me, I am a Worm, and no man; the scorn of men and the people's contempt. ⁷ All that see me have laughed me to scorn; they said with their lips while they shaked their head, ⁸ "He trusted in the Lord, let him deliver him; let him save him, since he delighteth in him." ⁹ Because thou art he, who drew me forth from the womb: my hope, when at the breasts of my mother; ¹⁰ I was cast on thy care from my very birth; from my mother's womb thou art my God; ¹¹ stand not at a distance from me; for trouble is near; for there is no helper. ¹² Many bulls have encompassed me; fat bulls have beset me around. ¹³ Against me they have opened their mouth, like a ravening and roaring lion. ¹⁴ I am poured out like water, and all my bones are torn asunder: my heart within me is melted like wax. ¹⁵ My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue cleaveth to my palate; thou hast indeed brought me to the dust of death. ¹⁶ Because many dogs have encompassed me, an assembly of wicked men have beset me; have pierced my hands and my feet; ¹⁷ have counted all my bones, and have stared and looked at me; ¹⁸ they have parted my garments among them, and for my vesture have cast lots; ¹⁹ Therefore, Lord, delay not thou my help, draw near to my assistance; ²⁰ rescue my soul from the sword; this only begotten of mine from the paw of a dog. ²¹ Save me from the mouth of a lion, and this lowliness of mine from the unicorn's horns. ²² I will declare thy name to my brethren: in the midst of a congregation I will sing praise to thee. ²³ Praise him, ye who fear the Lord praise him, all ye seed of Jacob. Let all the seed of Israel fear him; ²⁴ for he hath not slighted, nor abhorred the prayer of the distressed; nor turned away his face from me: but hearkened to me when I cried to him. ²⁵ My praise shall be of thee in a great congregation: I will pay my vows before them who fear him. ²⁶ The needy shall eat and be satisfied: and they who seek the Lord will praise him. Their heart shall be forever alive. ²⁷ All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord; and all the families of the nations shall worship before him: ²⁸ for the kingdom is the Lord's and he ruleth the nations. ²⁹ All the fat ones of the earth have eaten and worshipped: before him shall bow all that go down to the dust. Let my soul therefore live for him. ³⁰ My seed indeed will serve him: a generation which is coming shall be announced for the Lord: ³¹ and they will proclaim his saving mercy to a people that shall be born, whom the Lord made.

Mine enemies who persecute me wrongfully are become strong. I have made compensation on the spot for what I did not take by violence. ⁵ Thou, O God, knowest my folly; and my trespasses are not hid from thee. ⁶ Let not them who wait for thee, Lord of hosts, be put to shame on my account. Let not them be put to confusion for my sake, who are seeking thee, God of Israel. ⁷ Because for thy sake I have borne reproach, confusion hath covered my face. ⁸ To my brethren I am become an alien, and a stranger to the children of my mother. ⁹ For my zeal for thy house hath consumed me; and on me have fallen the reproaches of them, who reproached thee. ¹⁰ When I bowed down my soul with fasting; it furnished occasion for reproaching me. ¹¹ When I clothed myself with sackcloth, I became to them a proverb; ¹² they who sat in the gate spoke against me; and they who drank wine, made me their song. ¹³ But to thee, Lord, I, in my prayer, applied: it was a time of favour. God, in the multitude of thy mercy; in the truth of thy salvation, hearken to me. ¹⁴ Save me from mire that I may not sink down. Let me he delivered from them who hate me and out of this depth of waters. ¹⁵ Let not a flood of water overwhelm me, nor a whirlpool swallow me up, nor a pit shut its mouth upon me. ¹⁶ Hear me, Lord, for thy loving kindness is good; according to thine abundant mercy, look down upon me. ¹⁷ Turn not away thy face from thy servant; because I am in distress, hear me speedily. ¹⁸ Draw near to my soul and redeem it; deliver me, because of mine enemies. ¹⁹ For thou knowest my reproach, and my shame and my confusion; all mine adversaries are before thee. ²⁰ My soul expected reproach and misery. I waited for a condoler, but there was none; for a comforter, but none could I find. ²¹ They indeed have given me gall for my food, and for my thirst, have made me drink vinegar. ²² Let their table before them become a snare and a recompence and a stumbling block. ²³ Let their eyes be darkened that they may not see, and bow down their neck continually. ²⁴ Pour out thine indignation upon them, and let thy wrathful ire take hold of them. ²⁵ Let their fold be desolate, and in their dwellings no inhabitant. ²⁶ Because him, whom thou smotest, they persecuted, and have added to the pains of my Wounds; ²⁷ add thou iniquity to their iniquity, and let them not come into thy righteousness. ²⁸ Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be enrolled with the righteous. ²⁹ I am afflicted; I am full of pain; but the salvation of thy countenance hath upheld me. ³⁰ I will praise the name of my God with an Ode: I will magnify him with thanksgiving; ³¹ this indeed will be more pleasing to God than a young bull with horns and hoofs. ³² Let the afflicted behold and rejoice: seek God diligently and you shall live. ³³ For the Lord hath hearkened to the needy, and hath not despised his prisoners. ³⁴ Let the heavens and the earth praise him: the sea and all that move therein. ³⁵ For God will save Sion, and the cities of Judea shall be rebuilded, and the seed of his servants shall dwell there. ³⁶ They shall inherit it and possess it; and they who love his name shall dwell therein.

¹ [c] Lord, who bath believed this report of ours, and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been made manifest? ² We have made proclamation as a child before him: as a root in a thirsty soil, he hath no appearance, nor glory. We have seen him; and he hath neither appearance nor beauty: ³ but his appearance is mean and defective beyond the sons of men. Being a man in affliction and acquainted with grief, because his countenance was dejected, he was despised and disesteemed. ⁴ This man beareth away our sins; and for us he is in sorrow: And we considered him as being in trouble and under a stroke and in affliction. ⁵ But he was wounded for our sins, and afflicted for our iniquities. The chastisement of our peace was upon him; by his bruises we are healed. ⁶ We all like sheep had strayed; every man wandered in his way: and the Lord delivered him up for our sins: ⁷ and he, on account of his affliction, openeth not his mouth. He was led as a sheep to be slaughtered. And as a lamb before its shearer is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. ⁸ In this humiliation his legal trial was taken away. Who will declare his manner of life. [J] Because his life is taken from the earth; for the transgressions of my people he is led to death; ⁹ therefore for his funeral I will give up the wicked, and the rich for his death. Because he committed no iniquity, nor practised guile with his mouth, ¹⁰ and the Lord determined to purify him from this stroke: when his soul shall be given up for a sin offering; of you he shall see a seed which shall prolong their days. ¹¹ More over it is the determination of the Lord to remove him from the trouble of his soul; to shew him light and fashion him for knowledge; to justify the Righteous One who is serving many well, when he shall bear away their sins; ¹² therefore he shall inherit many and divide the spoils of the strong. [p] Because his soul was delivered up to death and he was numbered among transgressors and bore away the sins of many and on account of their iniquities was delivered up;

²⁴ Seventy weeks are set apart for thy people and for the holy city; for finishing sin offerings, and for sealing up sin offerings; and blotting out iniquities, and making atonement for iniquities; and for bringing in an everlasting righteousness; and for sealing vision and prophet; and for anointing the Holy of Holies. ²⁵ Therefore thou art to know and understand, that from the going forth of a word for returning an answer and for building Jerusalem until an Anointed ruler are seven weeks, and sixty two weeks. They shall indeed return and a street shall be built and a wall, and these times shall be emptied out, ²⁶ and after the sixty two weeks, the Messiah shall be cut off, though there is no crime in him; and he, with the ruler who is coming, will destroy the city and the sanctuary. They shall be destroyed with a deluge, and even to the end of the war determined on in course, with desolations. ²⁷ Now one week shall confirm a covenant for many and in the half of that week my sacrifice and libation shall be taken away. And upon the temple shall be an abomination of the desolations, and at the end of a time, an end shall be put to that desolation.

²¹ From that time Jesus began to point out to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders, and chief priests and scribes, and be put to death, and raised again on the third day.

²² Now while they remained in Galilee Jesus said to them, The son of man will soon be delivered into the hands of men, ²³ and they will put him to death; and on the third day he will be raised up. And they were exceedingly grieved.

² You know that two days hence is the passover, when the son of man is to be delivered up to be crucified.

⁶⁶ What think ye? Thereupon they, answering, said, He is guilty of death.

¹ Now early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to have him put to death.

⁶⁴ You have heard this blasphemy. What think ye? And they all adjudged him to be liable to death. ⁶⁵ Then some began to spit upon him, and to cover his face, and buffet him, and say to him, Prophesy: when the attendants smote him on the cheek with their open hands.

⁷¹ Then they said, what farther need have we of testimony? For we ourselves have heard from his own mouth.

²³ Him, being surrendered up by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, you have taken; and by the hands of wicked men have crucified and slain.

²⁷ For indeed against thy holy Child Jesus whom thou hast anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with nations and the tribes of Israel, were gathered together, ²⁸ to do what thy hand and thy council had determinately marked out beforehand to be brought to pass.

⁷ All that see me have laughed me to scorn; they said with their lips while they shaked their head, ⁸ "He trusted in the Lord, let him deliver him; let him save him, since he delighteth in him."

¹⁶ They tortured me; with scoffs they derided me; they gnashed their teeth at me.

¹⁹ [p] The dead shall be raised up again, even they in the tombs shall be raised up: and they in this land shall be filled with joy: for the dew from thee is healing for them; but the land of the ungodly shall fall.

³ but his appearance is mean and defective beyond the sons of men. Being a man in affliction and acquainted with grief, because his countenance was dejected, he was despised and disesteemed.

² in two days he can restore us to health; on the third day we shall be raised up and live before him.

⁴⁰ For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so the son of man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

⁶⁷ Then they spat in his face and struck him with their fists,68 and smote him with staves, saying, ⁶⁸ Prophesy to us Christ. Who is he that smote thee?

² So, having bound him, they led him away and delivered him up to Pontius Pilate the governor. ³ Then Judas, who had delivered him up, finding that he was condemned, repented and carried back the thirty shekels of silver to the chief priests and the elders, ⁴ saying, I have sinned in having betrayed innocent blood To which they replied, What is that to us? Look thou to that. ⁵ Thereupon he threw down the money in the temple, and withdrew, and went and strangled himself. ⁶ And the chief priests, taking the money, said; It is not lawful to put it into the holy treasury, seeing it is the price of blood. ⁷ So, having consulted together, they bought with it the pottor's field for the burial of strangers. ⁸ Therefore that field is ever since called the field of blood. ⁹ Then was fulfilled that, which was spoken by the prophet Jeremias, saying, "So I took the thirty pieces of silver, as the Lord commanded me. These being the price of him who was valued, whom some of the Israelites valued; ¹⁰ these they gave for the potter's field."

²⁷ Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus to the pretorium, and assembled about him the whole cohort. ²⁸ And having stripped him, they threw around him a scarlet military robe: ²⁹ and having platted a crown of thorns, they put it on his head, and a reed in his right hand; and falling on their knees before him, they mocked him, saying, Hail king of the Jews. ³⁰ Then, having spit in his face, they took the reed and struck him on the head. ³¹ And when they had mocked him, they took off the robe, and put his own raiment on him, and led him out to be crucified.

⁶⁵ Then some began to spit upon him, and to cover his face, and buffet him, and say to him, Prophesy: when the attendants smote him on the cheek with their open hands.

¹ And early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, and the Scribes, even the whole Sanhedrim, having consulted together, bound Jesus, and led him away, and delivered him up to Pilate.

¹⁶ Then the soldiers led him away to the court called the praetorium, and having assembled the whole cohort, ¹⁷ they arrayed him in purple, and platting a crown of thorns, they put it on his head, ¹⁸ and began with saluting him, "Hail, king of the Jews." ¹⁹ Then they smote him on the head with a reed, and spat upon him, and bowing their knees, made obeisance to him. ²⁰ And when they had mocked him they stripped him of the purple, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him.

²⁹ And they who passed by kept reviling him, shaking their heads, and saying, Ah! thou destroyer of the temple; and rebuilder of it in three days, ³⁰ save thyself, and come down from the cross. ³¹ And in like manner the chief priests, and the Scribes, jesting with one another, said, He saved others, Cannot he save himself?

¹ Then the whole assembly arose and led him away to Pilate, ² and began to accuse him, saying, We found this man perverting the nation, and forbidding to pay tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ, a king. ³ Thereupon Pilate asked him, saying, Thou art the king of the Jews? And he, in reply, said to him, It is as thou sayest. ⁴ Then Pilate said to the chief priests, and the people, I find nothing criminal in this man. ⁵ But they were the more vehement, saying, He raiseth sedition among the people, teaching through all Judea, from Galilee, where he began, even to this place.

¹¹ and Herod with his soldiers had treated him with contempt and mockery, having arrayed him with a splendid robe, he sent him back to Pilate.

⁴⁶ and he said to them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved the Christ to suffer and rise from the dead on the third day;

²⁸ From Caiaphas they led Jesus away to the judgment hall of the Roman governor. Now it was early in the morning and they themselves did not go into the hall that they might not be polluted, but that they might eat the passover. ²⁹ Pilate therefore came out to them and said, What accusation do you bring against this man? ³⁰ They in reply, said to him, If he were not a malefactor we would not have delivered him over to thee. ³¹ Then Pilate said to them; Take him yourselves and judge him according to your law. Upon this the Jews said to him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death, ³² so that the word was fulfilled which Jesus had spoken, signifying by what kind of death he was to die. ³³ Then Pilate went again into the hall, and called Jesus and said to him, Thou art the king of the Jews? ³⁴ Jesus answered him, Dost thou say this from thyself? Or have others told it thee concerning me? ³⁵ Pilate answered him, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation, even the chief priests, have delivered thee up to me. What hast thou done? ³⁶ Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my attendants would have fought to prevent my being delivered up to the Jews. But now my kingdom is not of this world. ³⁷ Thereupon Pilate said to him, Thou art a king then? Jesus answered, It is as thou sayest, I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to bear testimony for the truth. Every one who is of the truth hearkeneth to my voice. ³⁸ Pilate saith to him, What is truth? And having said this, he went out again to the Jews, and saith to them, I find no fault in him.

¹ Then Pilate took Jesus and scourged him, ² and the soldiers having platted a crown of thorns, put it on his head and threw around him a purple robe, ³ and said, Hail! king of the Jews! When they gave him slaps on the cheek. ⁴ Then Pilate went out again and saith to them, Behold I bring him out to you that you may know that I find no fault in him.

¹³ The God of Abraham, and Isaak, and Jacob; the God of our fathers hath glorified his servant Jesus whom ye delivered up. Yes, you renounced him in the presence of Pilate, when he had determined to release him: ¹⁴ you indeed renounced the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted to you. ¹⁵ You indeed killed him who is the conductor to life, whom God hath raised from the dead, of which we are witnesses. ¹⁶ Now for the belief in his name, his name hath strengthened this man whom you see and know. Yes, the belief which is by him hath given this man this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.

²⁷ For indeed against thy holy Child Jesus whom thou hast anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with nations and the tribes of Israel, were gathered together,

¹¹ who coming to us and taking Paul's girdle, bound his own hands and feet and said, Thus saith the holy spirit, So will the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man, whose girdle this is, and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.

³ For I delivered to you, as one of the principal things, that which I actually received, that Christ died for our sins, according to the scriptures; ⁴ and that he was buried; and that he was raised up the third day according to the scriptures; ⁵ and that he was seen by Cephas, then, by the twelve; ⁶ after that he was seen by above five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater number are even now alive, but some indeed are composed to rest; ⁷ after that he was seen by James, then by all the apostles;

¹¹ and having entered the house they found the child with Mary his mother. Whereupon, prostrating themselves, they did him homage. Then opening their treasures they presented him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.

²¹ And passing on he saw other two brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the vessel with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them.

² And lo! a leper came and prostrated himself before him, and said, Sir, if thou wilt, thou canst cleanse me.

³³ And they who were in the vessel came and bowed down to him, saying, Thou art indeed Son of God.

²⁵ She nevertheless advanced, and prostrating herself before him, said, O my lord, help me.

⁵⁶ Among whom were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

¹⁷ And some seeing him prostrated themselves before him, and some doubted.

³⁵ When James 'and John, the sons of Zebedee, accosted him, saying, Teacher, we desire that thou wouldst do for us what we are going to ask; ³⁶ thereupon he said to them, What do you desire me to do for you? ³⁷ And they said to him, Grant us, that one of us may sit on thy right hand, and the other on thy left, in thy glory. ³⁸ Thereupon Jesus said to them, You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup which I am about to drink, and be baptized with the baptism with which I am about to be baptized? ³⁹ They said to him, we can. Then Jesus said to them, you shall indeed drink the cup which I am about to drink, and be baptized with the baptism, with which I am about to be baptized; ⁴⁰ but to sit on my right hand and on my left, is not mine to give, except to those for whom his prepared. ⁴¹ Now the ten, when they heard this, began to express indignation in respect to James and John; ⁴² but Jesus, having called them to him, said to them, You know that the rulers of the nations exercise lordship over them; and their grandees exercise authority over them; ⁴³ but it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you, let him be your attendant: ⁴⁴ and whoever of you would be first, let him be the servant of all. ⁴⁵ For the son of man did not come to be waited on, but to serve; and to give his life as a ransom for many,

⁴⁰ Now there were women looking on at a distance, among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger, and of Joses, and Salome;

¹⁹ So Bersabe went to king Solomon, to speak to him concerning Adonias. And the king arose to meet her, and saluted her, and when he sat down on the throne, there was a throne set for the king's mother, and she sat on his right hand,

⁵ the Lord appeared to him that night in a dream, and said to him, Ask for thyself any favour.

³ And the king said, What would queen Esther? And what is thy petition? To the half of my kingdom it shall be granted thee.

⁹ In honour of thee the queen stood on thy right hand, arrayed in robes of gold and embroidery.

⁵ and wilt thou seek great things for thyself? Seek them not. For behold I am about to bring evils on all flesh, saith the Lord; but I will give thee thy life, for a spoil in every place whither thou shalt go.

¹ At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, Who is to be greatest in the kingdom of the heavens?

²⁸ Thereupon Jesus said to him, Verily I say to you, With respect to you who have followed me, at the renovation, when the son of man shall sit on the throne of his glory, you also shall sit on twelve thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

³² Whereupon, Jesus, stopping, called them and said, What do you desire me to do for you?

²² and the daughter of this same Herodias came in and danced, and pleased Herod and his guests, the king said to the damsel, Ask of me what thou wilt, and I will give it thee:

³⁶ thereupon he said to them, What do you desire me to do for you? ³⁷ And they said to him, Grant us, that one of us may sit on thy right hand, and the other on thy left, in thy glory.

⁵¹ And Jesus, addressing him, said, What dost thou desire me to do for thee? And the blind man said to him, Rabboni, that I may again receive sight:

¹⁹ So after the Lord had spoken to them, he was taken up to heaven, and sat at the right hand of God;

²⁰ Being asked by the Pharisees when the reign of God would commence, he answered and said to them, The reign of God doth not commence with parade; ²¹ nor shall they say, Lo, here! or Lo, there! For behold the reign of God is within you.

⁴¹ saying, What dost thou desire me to do for thee? And he said, O master! that I may have sight.

¹¹ And as this engaged their attention, he continued his discourse and spake a parable. Because he was near Jerusalem and they thought that the reign of God would commence immediately;

²⁴ Now there had been a contest among them in respect to this, which of them should be the greatest.

⁷ If you continue in me, and my words continue in you, ask what you will and it will be done for you:

⁶ When they therefore were come together they asked him, saying, Lord, art thou at this time about to restore the kingdom to Israel?

³⁴ who is he who shall condemn? Christ who died? Rather indeed who is raised up, who is actually at the right hand of God, and who maketh intercession for us?

¹⁰ in brotherly love be tenderly affectionate one to another: in honour prefer one another;

¹ Since you then have been raised up with the Christ, seek the things which are above; where the Christ is seated at the right hand of God.

² and to Apphia the beloved, and to Archippus our fellow soldier and to the congregation in thy house; ³ favour be to you, and peace from God our father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

³ [p] The land, with all its inhabitants, is wasted. [J] It was I who strengthened the pillars thereof.

¹⁸ Pride goeth before destruction: and a haughty spirit before a fall.

¹⁷ Awake, awake, stand up, Jerusalem who hast drunk from the hand of the Lord the cup of his indignation. For thou hast drunk the cup of horror; the great cup of his wrath; and drained it.

²² Thus saith the Lord, the God who judgeth his people, Behold I have taken out of thy hand the cup of horror; the great cup of mine indignation; and thou shalt no more drink it again.

¹⁵ in the manner the Lord, the God of Israel said, "Take this cup of wine; this strong wine from my hand, and thou shalt make all the nations, to which I send thee, drink it. ¹⁶ And they shall drink and vomit and rave, because of the sword which I send among them. ¹⁷ So I took the cup out of the hand of the Lord and made all the nations drink to which the Lord sent me, ¹⁸ namely Jerusalem, and the cities of Juda, and the kings of Juda, and his chiefs, to make them a desolation and a waste and an object of pity; ¹⁹ also Pharao king of Egypt and his servants and his nobles and all his people; ²⁰ and all the mixed people; and all the kings of the Philistines, [namely Ascalon and Gaza and Akkaron and the remnant of Azotus; ²¹ and Idumea and Moab and the children of Ammon; ²² and the kings of Tyre and the kings of Sidon; and the kings on the border of the sea; ²³ and Daidan and Thaiman and Ros, and all that had their foreheads shaven; ²⁴ and all the mixed people who dwell in the desert; ²⁵ and all the kings of Ailam and all the kings of the Persians ²⁶ and all the kings north of the sun, far and near, every one adjoining his brother, even all the kingdoms on the face of the earth. ²⁷ And thou shalt say to them, Thus said the Lord Almighty, Drink and be drunk, and you shall vomit, and fall and rise no more because of the sword which I send among you. ²⁸ And if they refuse to take the cup out of thy hand to drink, then thou shalt say, Thus saith the Lord, You shall drink it: ²⁹ for in the city which is called by my name I am beginning to inflict calamity and with purification you shall not be purified; for I am calling for a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth. ³⁰ Therefore thou shalt prophesy against them all these words and say; The Lord from on high will solemnly pronounce sentence from his sanctuary; he will utter his voice; in his place he will utter a triumphant shout and some like the treaders of grapes will answer. When destruction hath come on the inhabitants of this land; ³¹ upon a part of the earth; because the Lord hath a controversy with the nations, he will come to judgment with all flesh; and the wicked shall be given up to the sword, saith the Lord. ³² Thus saith the Lord, Behold evils are coming from nation to nation. A mighty tempest is issuing forth from the extremity of the earth, ³³ and the slain of the Lord shall be in the day of the Lord from one end of the earth to the other. They shall not be buried. They shall be for dung on the face of the earth. ³⁴ Raise the mournful cry, ye shepherds; utter loud moans and lamentations, ye rams of the flock; for the days for your slaughter are accomplished, and ye shall fall like choice rams; ³⁵ and the shepherds shall have no way to flee, nor the rams of the flock to escape. ³⁶ Hark! a sound of the shepherds' screaming! and a doleful bleating of the sheep and the rams! For the Lord hath utterly destroyed their pastures ³⁷ and because of his fierce anger he will put an end to the remains of peace. ³⁸ Like a lion he hath quitted his covert; therefore their land is become a trackless desert by reason of the mighty sword.

¹² Because they [said the Lord] who had a law not to drink the cup, drank it; thou therefore shalt not escape unpunished.

³⁵ Peter saith to him, Though I should die with thee, I will not deny thee. And so said all the disciples.

³⁹ Then, advancing a little further, he fell prostrate on his face, and prayed, saying, O my father, if it be possible, let this cup be removed from me. Nevertheless not as I would, but as thou wiliest.

⁴² Again he went away the second time, and prayed, saying, O my father! If this cup cannot be removed from me, without my drinking it; thy will be done.

⁵⁶ But all this is done that the writings of the prophets may be confirmed. Then all the disciples forsook him and fled.

³⁸ Thereupon Jesus said to them, You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup which I am about to drink, and be baptized with the baptism with which I am about to be baptized? ³⁹ They said to him, we can. Then Jesus said to them, you shall indeed drink the cup which I am about to drink, and be baptized with the baptism, with which I am about to be baptized;

³⁶ And he said, Abba, father, all things are possible to thee. Take away this cup from me. Nevertheless not my will, but thine be done.

⁵⁰ I have also a baptism to be baptized with, and how am I straightened until it be accomplished.

⁴² saying, O Father, if thou wilt remove this cup from me; but not my will, but thine be done.

¹¹ Thereupon Jesus said to Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath. Must I not drink the cup which my Father hath given me?

²⁶ and in such a manner as the spirit joineth in helping our infirmities: for we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the spirit itself intercedeth for us with groans which cannot be expressed in words.

³ You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may lavish on your sensual appetites.

³⁴ Then the king will say to them on his right, Come ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom which hath been prepared for you from the formation of the world:

⁴⁰ but to sit on my right hand and on my left, is not mine to give, except to those for whom his prepared.

² and slew with the sword James the brother of John.

¹⁷ and if children, then heirs; heirs indeed of God, and joint heirs with Christ if we suffer with him so that with him we may also be glorified.

⁹ things indeed, which as it is written, "Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man conceived; " which God hath prepared for them who love him;

⁷ therefore our hope of you is stedfast, as we know, that as you are partakers of the sufferings, so will you be also of the consolation.

²⁴ Now I rejoice in these sufferings of mine for you, and am in my turn making up in my flesh the remainders of the sufferings of the Christ, for his body, namely, the congregation

¹¹ This is a faithful word. For if we have died with him, we shall also live with him. ¹² If we suffer, we shall indeed reign with him. If we deny him, he will deny us.

¹⁶ but now they desire a better; that is a heavenly country; therefore God is not ashamed of them; to be invoked as their God: for he prepared a city for them.

⁹ I John, who am your brother, and a partaker in this affliction, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the island which is called Patmos, on the account of the word of God and of the testimony of Jesus Christ.

¹⁰ A wicked man doth mischief with haughtiness; but wise men are their own judges.

⁴¹ Now the ten, when they heard this, began to express indignation in respect to James and John;

²³ Thereupon they began to inquire among themselves, which of them it could be who would do this. ²⁴ Now there had been a contest among them in respect to this, which of them should be the greatest. ²⁵ Therefore he said to them, The kings of the nations exercise dominion over them. And they who tyrannise over them are stiled benefactors.

⁴ Love is long suffering; it aboundeth in kindness. Love is not envious. Love is not insolent: it is not puffed up.

³ upon nothing out of a spirit of contention or vain glory, but in lowliness of mind esteeming one another better than yourselves,

¹⁴ But if you have bitter zeal, and strife in your heart, do not boast and lie against the truth.

⁵ Do you think that the scripture speaketh in vain? Doth the spirit which dwelt in us excite desire to envy? ⁶ It granteth indeed a greater favour, therefore it saith, "God resisteth the proud, and granteth favour to the humble."

⁵ Likewise ye who are young, submit to those more advanced in years. And being all submissive to one another; adorn yourselves with humility; because "God resisteth the proud and granteth favour to the humble;"

¹² Upon this the king in furious wrath gave orders to destroy all the wise men of Babylon. ¹³ So the decree went forth. And when the wise men began to be slain Now search had been made for Daniel and his friends to slay them

³⁷ Thou king, art a king of kings, to whom the God of heaven hath given a kingdom, strong and mighty and glorious, ³⁸ in every place where the sons of men dwell. Into thy hand he hath delivered the beasts of the field, and the birds of the air, and the fishes of the sea, and appointed thee lord over all. Thou art the head of gold. ³⁹ And after thee there shall be raised up another kingdom inferior to thee; then a third kingdom which is the brass, which shall rule over the whole earth; ⁴⁰ then a fourth kingdom which shall be strong as iron. As iron breaketh to pieces and subdueth all things, so shall it break and subdue all. ⁴¹ And inasmuch as thou sawest the feet and toes, partly of clay and partly of iron, it shall be a disjointed kingdom, though there shall be in it some of its iron root. As thou sawest the iron mixed with the clay; ⁴² and the toes of the feet were part iron, and part clay, some part of that kingdom will be strong and some part of it will be broken. ⁴³ Inasmuch as thou sawest the iron mingled with the clay, there will be mixtures in it, of the seed of men, and they will not cement one with another, as iron cloth not cement with clay. ⁴⁴ And in the days of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and this kingdom of his shall not be left to another people. It shall break in pieces, and blow away all those kingdoms and shall itself stand forever. ⁴⁵ As thou sawest that without hands there was cut from a mountain a stone, which broke in pieces the clay, the iron, the brass, the silver, the gold; the God who is great, hath made known to the king what must come to pass hereafter. The dream indeed is true and the interpretation thereof is faithful.

² he sent for the presidents and the generals, and the governors, rulers and princes, and those in authority, and all the chiefs of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which Nabuchodonosar the king had set up. ³ And when the governors, the presidents, the generals, the leaders, the great princes, those in authority, and all the chiefs of the provinces were assembled for the dedication of the image which Nabuchodonosar the king had set up, and were standing before the image, ⁴ the herald cried with a loud voice, To you peoples of different tribes and languages command is given; ⁵ whenever you shall hear the sound of the trumpet and syrinx and of the kithara and sanibuk and of the psaltery, and all kinds of musical instruments, prostrate yourselves and worship the golden image which Nabuchodonosar the king hath set up. ⁶ And whoever will not prostrate himself and worship, shall that very hour be cast into that furnace of fire, which is heating. ⁷ So when the people heard the sound of the trumpet and syrinx, and of the kithara and sambuk, and of the psaltery, and all kinds of musical instruments, all the peoples, tribes and languages, falling prostrate, worshipped the golden image which nabuchodonosar the king had set up.

¹⁵ Now therefore are you ready, when you hear the sound of the trumpet and syrinx and of the kithara and sambuk and of the psaltery and symphony and all kinds of musical instruments, to fall prostrate and worship the golden image which I have made? For if you do not worship you shall, that very hour, be cast into the furnace of fire, which is heated. And what god is there who can deliver you out of my hands?

¹⁹ At this Nabuchodonosar was filled with wrath, and the form of his countenance was changed against Sedrach, Misach and Abdenago. And he ordered to heat the furnace seven fold, till it was hot as possible: ²⁰ and commanded some strong men to bind Sedrach, Misach and Abdenago, and cast them into the furnace of fire which was heated. ²¹ Then were these men bound, clad as they were with their Babylonish dress and with turbans and boots; and cast into the midst of the furnace of fire which was heated, ²² as the command of the king was peremptory. But though the furnace was heated to an excessive degree and

¹⁹ And because of the majesty which he gave him, all the peoples, tribes and languages trembled and were struck with awe at his presence. Whom he would he slew, and whom he would he smote, and whom he would he set up, and whom he would he put down.

²⁹ Take upon you my yoke and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest for your souls.

³ and said, Verily I say to you, Unless you be changed, and be like children you shall never enter the kingdom of the heavens. ⁴ Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, he is of higher dignity in the kingdom of the heavens.

²⁵ Whereupon Jesus having called them to him, said, You know that the chiefs of the nations exercise dominion over them; and they who are grandees exercise authority over them: ²⁶ but it shall not be so among you. But whoever among you would wish to be great, let him be your attendant. ²⁷ And whoever among you would wish to be first, let him be your servant; ²⁸ even as the son of man came not to be waited on, but to wait, and to give his life a ransom for many.

⁴² but Jesus, having called them to him, said to them, You know that the rulers of the nations exercise lordship over them; and their grandees exercise authority over them;

²⁵ Therefore he said to them, The kings of the nations exercise dominion over them. And they who tyrannise over them are stiled benefactors. ²⁶ But with you it must not be so. But let the elder among you be as the younger; and the leader as he who waiteth at table. ²⁷ For which is greater; he who is at table; or he who waiteth? Is not he, who is at table? But I am among you as he who waiteth.

¹² So when he had washed their feet and put on his garments, having again taken his place at table, he said to them, Consider what I have done to you. ¹³ You call me The teacher and the master; and you say right, for so I am. ¹⁴ If I then, the master and the teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another's feet; ¹⁵ for I have set you an example, that you may do as I have done to you. ¹⁶ Verily, verily I say to you, The servant is not greater than his master; nor is a missionary greater than he who sent him. ¹⁷ If you know these things, happy are you if you practise them.

¹³ Its verdigrease shall be exposed to shame. Because thou wast polluted what else could be done, since thou wouldst not be cleansed till I filled up my wrath?

⁸ But as for you, be ye not called Rabbi; for one is your teacher, namely the Christ. Now as for you all, ye are brethren, ⁹ and should call no one on earth your father, for one is your father, namely, he who is in heaven. ¹⁰ Neither be ye called leaders for one is your leader, namely the Christ. ¹¹ Let then the greatest among you be your attendant. ¹² For who soever exalteth himself, shall be humbled, but he who humbleth himself, shall be exalted.

⁴⁴ Then they also will answer him, saying, Lord, when did we see thee hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister to thee?

⁵⁵ Now many women were there, looking on at a distance, who had accompanied Jesus from Galilee to wait upon him.

³⁵ Then sitting down, he called the twelve, and saith to them, If any one desireth to be first, let him be last of all, and servant of all.

⁴³ but it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you, let him be your attendant:

⁴⁵ For the son of man did not come to be waited on, but to serve; and to give his life as a ransom for many,

⁷ Then observing how eager the guests were for the first places at table, he addressed them in a parable, and said, ⁸ When thou art invited by any one to a wedding, do not take the uppermost place, lest a person of greater distinction than thou be invited by him. ⁹ In which case he who invited thee and him will come and say to thee, Give place to this man. Then thou, with confusion, must take the lower place.

¹⁴ I tell you, this man went down to his house acquitted, and not the other. For whosoever exalteth himself shall be humbled, but he who humbleth himself shall be exalted.

³⁶ Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my attendants would have fought to prevent my being delivered up to the Jews. But now my kingdom is not of this world.

⁵ And arriving at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. And they had John for their attendant.

²⁴ not that we have dominion over your faith; but are joint promoters of your joy; for in this faith you have continued;

⁴ [the weapons of our warfare being indeed not carnal but mighty through God for the demolition of fortifications] ⁵ demolishing surmises and every mount raised against the knowledge of God, and bringing every sentiment captive to the obedience of the Christ; ⁶ and being in a state of readiness to punish every act of disobedience, when your obedience is complete. ⁷ Consider what is before you. If any one is confident in himself that he is Christ's; let him again reckon this from himself, that as he himself is Christ's, so we also belong to Christ. ⁸ For though I should boast even somewhat more of this power of ours, which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I shall not be put to shame. ⁹ In order that I may not seem as if I would terrify you by my letters, ¹⁰ ["For his letters, saith one, are indeed weighty and strong; but his bodily presence is weak, and his words contemptible,"]

¹⁸ The Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord in that day! Indeed, on how many occasions he ministered to me at Ephesus, thou thyself knowest very well.

¹³ whom I was determining to keep with me that for thee he might wait on me during my being in bonds for the glad tidings; ¹⁴ Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth on service on the account of them who are to be heirs of salvation?

¹¹ if any one speaketh, as speaking the oracles of God; if any one dispenseth, as dispensing out of a stock which God supplieth; that in all things God may be gloried through Jesus Christ, to whom belongeth the glory and the power, for the ages of the ages. Amen.

³ not as exercising dominion over the lots, but as being examples to the flock.

⁹ I wrote to the congregation, but Diotrephes, who affecteth a preeminence among them, doth not regard us. ¹⁰ For this cause, when I come I will take notice of his works which he doth, talking lightly of us with malicious words, and not content with this, he doth not entertain the brethren himself, and them who would, he hindereth, and casteth them out of the congregation.

¹¹ And I saw another wild beast coming up out of the earth; and it had two horns like a lamb; and it spake like a dragon; ¹² and it executeth all the authority of the first beast in its presence and causeth the earth and its inhabitants to worship the first beast whose deadly wound was healed. ¹³ And it performeth great signs so as to cause fire to come down out of heaven on the earth, in the sight of men; ¹⁴ and it leadeth astray the dwellers on the earth by the signs which it had power to do in the presence of the beast; commanding the inhabitants of die earth to make an image of the beast which had the wound of a sword and lived. ¹⁵ And power was granted to it to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast might speak and cause all to be slain who would not worship the image of the beast. ¹⁶ And it causeth all both little and great, both rich and poor, both freemen and slaves to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, ¹⁷ and that none should buy or sell, but he who hath the mark, or the name of the beast or the number of its name.

⁶ And I saw the woman drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the witnesses of Jesus; and when I saw her I expressed my astonishment with great amaze.

⁴ Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, he is of higher dignity in the kingdom of the heavens.

³³ And when he came to Capernaum, and was in the house, he asked them. What was that, about which you were debating among yourselves on the road. ³⁴ And they were silent. For on the road they had debated among themselves, Who should be greatest. ³⁵ Then sitting down, he called the twelve, and saith to them, If any one desireth to be first, let him be last of all, and servant of all.

²⁶ But with you it must not be so. But let the elder among you be as the younger; and the leader as he who waiteth at table.

³⁴ Even you yourselves know that these very hands have ministered to my wants, and to the supply of them who were with me. ³⁵ On all occasions I have suggested to you that you ought thus to labour, and support the indigent, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that he said, "It is a greater happiness to give, than to receive."

¹⁴ I am a debtor both to Greeks and barbarians, to both the learned and the unlearned,

¹⁹ For being free from all men, I have made myself a slave to all that I may gain the more. ²⁰ To the Jews I became as a Jew that I might gain the Jews: to them under law, as if I were under law, that I might gain those under law: ²¹ to them without law, as if I were without law [not as without law to God, but under a law to Christ] that I might gain those with out law: ²² To the weak I became as weak, that I might gain the weak; to all those I have become all this that I may save all. ²³ And this I do in consequence of the glad tidings that I may be a joint sharer thereof.

⁵ For we do not proclaim ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus sake.

⁵ For I reckon that I am not a whit behind the chiefest apostles;

²³ Are they ministers of Christ? [I speak with an excess of folly] I am more so; more abundant in labours; far surpassing in stripes; more frequent in imprisonments, often in deaths. ²⁴ Of the Jews I five times received forty stripes save one. ²⁵ Thrice I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Thrice I have been shipwrecked. In the deep I spent a whole night and day. ²⁶ On journeys I have been frequently in dangers from rivers; in dangers from robbers; in dangers from my country men; in dangers from foreign nations; in dangers in cities; in dangers in a wilderness; in dangers at sea; in dangers among false brethren: ²⁷ In toil and fatigue, in watchings many a time, with hunger and thirst; in fastings many a time, with cold and nakedness.

¹⁵ And as for me, I will, with the greatest pleasure, spend and be spent for your sakes, though the more I love you, the less I be beloved.

²⁴ If he determine in his heart to turn to the Lord, when he shall have shewn man his charge against him, and pointed out to him his folly, he will support him, that he may not fall to death,

⁷ A brother is not redeemed. Is a man to redeem himself?

⁵ But he was wounded for our sins, and afflicted for our iniquities. The chastisement of our peace was upon him; by his bruises we are healed.

⁸ In this humiliation his legal trial was taken away. Who will declare his manner of life. [J] Because his life is taken from the earth; for the transgressions of my people he is led to death;

¹⁰ and the Lord determined to purify him from this stroke: when his soul shall be given up for a sin offering; of you he shall see a seed which shall prolong their days. ¹¹ More over it is the determination of the Lord to remove him from the trouble of his soul; to shew him light and fashion him for knowledge; to justify the Righteous One who is serving many well, when he shall bear away their sins;

²⁴ Seventy weeks are set apart for thy people and for the holy city; for finishing sin offerings, and for sealing up sin offerings; and blotting out iniquities, and making atonement for iniquities; and for bringing in an everlasting righteousness; and for sealing vision and prophet; and for anointing the Holy of Holies. ²⁵ Therefore thou art to know and understand, that from the going forth of a word for returning an answer and for building Jerusalem until an Anointed ruler are seven weeks, and sixty two weeks. They shall indeed return and a street shall be built and a wall, and these times shall be emptied out, ²⁶ and after the sixty two weeks, the Messiah shall be cut off, though there is no crime in him; and he, with the ruler who is coming, will destroy the city and the sanctuary. They shall be destroyed with a deluge, and even to the end of the war determined on in course, with desolations.

²⁰ Jesus saith to him, the foxes have holes and the birds of the air have roosts; but the son of man hath not where to lay his head.

²⁸ For this is my blood; that of the new covenant; that shed for many, for the remission of sins.

²⁴ Then he said to them, This is my blood; that of the new covenant; that shed for many.

²⁷ For which is greater; he who is at table; or he who waiteth? Is not he, who is at table? But I am among you as he who waiteth.

¹⁵ even as the father knoweth me, and I know the father; and I lay down my life for the sheep.

⁵⁰ and do you not consider that it is better for us that one man die for the people than that the whole nation should perish. ⁵¹ Now this he said not merely of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was soon to die for that nation, ⁵² and not for that nation only, but that he might gather into one body the children of God who were scattered abroad.

⁴ riseth from the supper and layeth aside his upper garments, and having taken a towel and girded himself, ⁵ he then poureth water into the basin and began to wash the feet of the disciples and wipe them with the towel, with which he was girded. ⁶ He cometh therefore to Simon Peter. Whereupon Peter saith to him, "Master, thou wash my feet?"! ⁷ Jesus answered and said to him, What I am doing thou dost not comprehend at present, but thou shalt know hereafter. ⁸ Peter saith to him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, Unless I wash thee thou hast no portion with me. ⁹ Simon Peter saith to him; Master, not my feet only, but also the hands and the head. ¹⁰ Jesus saith to him, He who hath bathed needeth only to wash the feet, the rest of the body being clean. Now you are clean, but not all, ¹¹ [For he knew him who was delivering him up, therefore he said, You are not all clean.]

²⁴ They are justified freely by his grace through the redemption which is by Christ Jesus, ²⁵ whom God heretofore exhibited as a mercy seat by faith in his blood, that, on account of the remission of past sins, during the forbearance of God, ²⁶ it might be an indication of this justification of his, pointing to a display of this justification of his at this time, in order to shew this, That he is just and the justifier of him who is a believer in Jesus.

²⁵ who was delivered up for our offences and raised again for our justification.

¹⁵ but the free gift is not as the transgression; for if for the transgression of the one, the many died; much more hath the favour of God, and the free gift by the favour of the other man, Jesus Christ, superabounded to the many: ¹⁶ nor is this free gift as in the case when one sinned" for the sentence was a condemnation for one offence, but the ¹⁷ free gift is an acquittal from many transgressions. For if for the offence of the one, death reigned by that one; much more shall they who receive the superabundance of this favour and of the free gift of this acquittal, reign in life by the other, namely Jesus Christ. ¹⁸ Therefore as by one transgression there was a sentence of condemnation for all men; so by one acquittal there is an adjudication of life for all men. ¹⁹ For as by the disobedience of the one man, the many were ranked as sinners, so also by the obedience of the other man, the many will be ranked as righteous.

⁹ For you know the bounty of our Lord Jesus Christ, that rich as he was, he for your sakes became poor, that through his poverty you might become rich.

¹³ From this curse of the law Christ hath redeemed us, being made a curse for us; [for it is written, "Cursed, is every one who is suspended on a cross,"]

⁷ by whom we have this redemption by his blood; the forgiveness of our sins according to the richness of his grace

² And walk in love, even as the Christ loved us, and delivered himself up for us, as an3 offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savour.

⁴ look not every one to his own interests, but every one of you to the interests also of others. ⁵ For let this temper of mind be in you which was in Christ Jesus, ⁶ who being in the form of God did not think it robbery to be like God, ⁷ but he emptied himself"having taken the form of a servant, being in the likeness of men, ⁸ and found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death, even the death of a cross;

⁶ who gave himself as a ransom for all; as the testimony for his own times;

¹⁴ who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

¹⁰ For it became him for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, when bringing many sons to glory to make the leader of their salvation perfect by sufferings.

¹⁸ knowing that from that vain course of life, handed down to you from your fathers, you have been redeemed not with perishable things such as silver and gold, ¹⁹ but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot,

²⁴ who himself offered up our sins in his own body on the cross, that we, being freed from those sins, might live for righteousness; "by whose stripes you have been healed."

¹⁸ Because Christ himself suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God: being indeed put to death in flesh, but brought to life by that spirit

² and he is an atonement for our sins, and not for ours only, but for those of the whole world.

⁵ and from Jesus Christ who is the faithful witness, the first born from the dead, and the sovereign of the kings of the earth. To him who hath loved us, and washed us from our sins with his blood,

⁸ And when he took the book, the four animate beings and the four and twenty elders fell down before the lamb, having, every of them, kitharas and golden cups full of incense which is the prayers of the saints. ⁹ And they sang a new song, saying, "Worthy art thou to take the book and to open the seals of it, because thou hast been slain and hast purchased us for God with thy blood, out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation;

²⁷ As Jesus was departing thence, two blind men followed him, with loud outcries, saying, Son of David, take pity on us. ²⁸ And when he went into the house, the blind men came to him. And Jesus saith to them, Do you believe that I can do this? They say to him, Yes, master. ²⁹ Then he touched their eyes, saying, According to your belief, be it to you. ³⁰ Whereupon their eyes were opened. Then Jesus restrained them, saying, See that none know this. ³¹ But when they went out, they spread his fame through all that country.

⁴⁶ Then they proceeded on to Jericho, and as he was going out of Jericho, with his disciples and a great multitude, blind Bartimeus, son of Timeus, was sitting by the way side, begging. ⁴⁷ And when he heard that it is Jesus, the Nazarene, he began to cry aloud, and say, Jesus, son of David, have pity on me. ⁴⁸ And many rebuked him, that he should hold his peace; but he cried the louder, Son of David, have pity on me. ⁴⁹ There upon Jesus, stopping, ordered him to be called. So they call the blind man, Saying to him, Take courage; arise; he calleth thee. ⁵⁰ Upon which, throwing aside his mantle, he sprang up and came to Jesus. ⁵¹ And Jesus, addressing him, said, What dost thou desire me to do for thee? And the blind man said to him, Rabboni, that I may again receive sight: ⁵² Thereupon Jesus said to him, Go thy way. Thy faith hath cured thee. And instantly he recovered his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.

³⁵ And when he drew near to Jericho there happened to be a blind man sitting by the way side, begging, ³⁶ who having heard the crowd passing through it, inquired what might have been the matter. ³⁷ And when they told him, That Jesus the Nazarene is passing by, ³⁸ he cried, saying, Jesus, son of David, have pity on me. ³⁹ Upon this they who went before checked him that he might hold his peace; but he cried still the louder, Son of David, have pity on me. ⁴⁰ Whereupon Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. And when he came near, Jesus asked him, ⁴¹ saying, What dost thou desire me to do for thee? And he said, O master! that I may have sight. ⁴² Then Jesus said to him, Have sight. Thy faith hath cured thee. ⁴³ And instantly he received his sight, and followed him, praising God. And all the people, when they saw this, gave praise to God.

⁸ The Lord looseth them who were bound. The Lord causeth the blind to see clearly. The Lord raiseth up them who were broken down. The Lord loveth the righteous.

¹⁸ And in that day the deaf shall hear the words of a book, and they in darkness, even they in thick darkness; the eyes even of the blind shall see;

⁵ Then shall be opened the eyes of the blind; and the ears of the deaf will hear. ⁶ Then will the lame bound like a hart; and the stammering tongue will speak plain. Because water is burst forth in the desert, and torrents in a thirsty land;

¹⁶ and lead the blind in a way which they know not, and cause them to walk in paths which they have not known. For them I will make the darkness light, and the crooked ways a straight road. These things 1 will do, and I will not forsake them:

¹⁸ [p] Hear, ye deaf; and ye blind, look up that you may see:

¹⁰ They shall grope like blind men for a wall and feel about like men who have no eyes, and fall at midday as at midnight.

¹ [M] THE SPIRIT of the Lord is upon me, for the business for which he anointed me. He hath sent me to publish glad tidings to the poor, to heal them who are brokenhearted; to proclaim a deliverance to captives, and a recovery of sight to the blind: ² to proclaim an acceptable year of the Lord and a day of retribution. To comfort all who are mourning;

²² Then there was brought to him a demoniac, blind and dumb, and he healed him, so that he who was blind and dumb both spake and saw. ²³ And all the people were astonished and said, Is this the son of David?

²² And lo! a Chananitish woman from those quarters came out and cried with a loud voice, saying to him, Have pity on me, O my lord, Son of David; my daughter is grievously afflicted by a demon.

⁹ And the crowds that went before, and they who followed, shouted, saying, Hosannah to the son of David! Blessed he, who is coming in the name of the Lord! Hosannah in the highest!

¹⁴ Then the blind and the lame came to him in the temple and he healed them.

⁴² saying, What think ye concerning the Christ? Whose Son is he? They say to him, David's.

⁴⁶ Then they proceeded on to Jericho, and as he was going out of Jericho, with his disciples and a great multitude, blind Bartimeus, son of Timeus, was sitting by the way side, begging.

²¹ Now at that very time he was curing many of diseases, and maladies, and evil spirits, and graciously bestowing sight to many who were blind.

¹ And as he was passing along he saw a man who was blind from his birth, ² whereupon his disciples asked him, saying, Rabbi, who sinned this man, or his parents, that he should be born blind? ³ Jesus answered, It was neither for any sin of this man, nor of his parents: but that the works of God may be manifested in him; ⁴ I must work the works of him who sent me, while it is day. Night is coming, when no one can work. ⁵ While I am in the world, I am the light of the world. ⁶ Having said this he spat on the ground, and made some clay with the spittle, and spread the clay on the blind man's eyes, ⁷ and said to him, Go, wash them at the pool of Siloam [the meaning, of which is Sent.] So he went and washed them and returned seeing. ⁸ Thereupon the neighbours, and they who had seen him before, when he was blind, said, Is not this he who used to sit begging? ⁹ Some said, It is he: and others said it is like him. He said, I am [the man.] ¹⁰ Then they said to him, How were thine eyes opened? ¹¹ In reply to which he said, A man called Jesus made clay and anointed mine eyes, and said to me, Go to the pool of Siloam and wash them. So I went and washed them and got sight. ¹² Then they said to him, Where is he? He saith, I do not know.

³⁰ Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn to him with an oath, that from the fruit of his loins he would, as far as regardeth the flesh, raise up the Christ to sit on his throne,

³ concerning his son, [him who was of a seed of David with respect to flesh ⁴ him who was determinately marked out as son of God by a power, according to a spirit of holiness, of rising up from the dead,]

²⁵ And when he saw that he could not prevail against him he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh became numb, in wrestling with him. ²⁶ And he said to him, Let me go: for the dawn approached. But Jacob said I will not let thee go unless thou bless me. ²⁷ And he said to him what is thy name? to which he replied, Jacob. ²⁸ Thereupon he said to him, Thy name shall no more be Jacob only, but Israel also shall be thy name. Since thou hast been enabled to prevail with God, therefore with men thou shalt be mighty. ²⁹ Then Jacob asked him saying, Tell me thy name. And he said why dost thou ask my name? Then he blessed him there.

⁷ Ask, and ye shall obtain; seek and ye shall find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. ⁸ For every one who asketh, obtaineth; and he who seeketh, findeth; and to him who knocketh the door will be opened.

²³ But he made her no answer. Then his disciples came near and intreated him, saying, Dismiss this woman, for she crieth after us.

¹³ Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray for them; and his disciples rebuked them.

⁸ I say to you, though he will not rise and give him on account of being his friend; yet on account of his importunity he will rise and give him what he wanteth. ⁹ Now I say to you, Ask, and you shall obtain: seek, and you shall find: knock, and the door will be opened to you. ¹⁰ For every one who asketh obtaineth: and he who seeketh, findeth: and to him who knocketh, the door will be opened.

¹ Then he addressed them with a parable, to shew them that they ought to persevere in prayer, and not be discouraged; ² saying, There was in a certain city a judge, who neither feared God, nor regarded man. ³ And there was in that city a widow, who went to him, saying, Do me justice on mine adversary. ⁴ And for a while he would not. But afterwards he said within himself, Though I neither fear God, nor regard man, ⁵ yet because this widow giveth me trouble, I will do her justice, that she may not, by coming perpetually, torment me. ⁶ And the Lord said, Hear what this unjust judge saith! ⁷ And will not God vindicate the cause of his chosen, who are crying to him day and night"? Will he linger in their cause? ⁸ He will, I assure you, vindicate their cause speedily. But will the son of man, when he cometh, find this belief in this land"?

³⁹ Upon this they who went before checked him that he might hold his peace; but he cried still the louder, Son of David, have pity on me.

² Continue in the constant exercise of prayer, watching there in with thanksgiving;

¹⁷ Pray without ceasing.

³⁷ Thus saith Adonai the Lord, Still that they may do this, the house of Israel must seek me;

²¹ Whereupon he said to her, What is thy desire? She said to him, Grant that these two sons of mine may sit, one on thy right hand and the other on thy left in thy kingdom.

²⁹ For this cause, when I was sent for, I came without any hesitation. I ask therefore on what account you have sent for me?

⁶ Be anxious about nothing; but on all occasions, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;

¹⁸ Open mine eyes, that I may discern the wonderous things of thy law.

¹⁷ that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of the glory, would give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the acknowledgment of him ¹⁸ that He would enlighten the eyes of your understanding, that you may see what the hope of this invitation of his is; and what the riches of the glory of this inheritance of his, in the saints; ¹⁹ and what the exceeding greatness of this power of his for us who believe, corresponding to the energy of the strength of that power

⁶⁷ Before I was afflicted, I transgressed; for this cause I have kept thy word.

⁷¹ It is good for me that thou hast humbled me: that I might learn thy rules of rectitude.

⁸ The Lord is gracious and merciful: long suffering and abundant in kindness.

¹⁵ and he touched her hand; thereupon the fever left her and she arose and entertained them.

²⁹ Then he touched their eyes, saying, According to your belief, be it to you.

³⁶ And seeing the multitudes, he had compassion on them because they were fainty and forlorn, like sheep without a shepherd.

¹⁴ And when Jesus landed he saw a great multitude, and had compassion on them, and healed their sick.

³² Then Jesus called his disciples and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they have attended me now three days, and have nothing to eat. I will not send them away fasting.

³³ Whereupon he taketh him apart from the multitude, and put his fingers in his ears, and he spat, and touched his tongue;

¹³ And when the Lord beheld her, he had compassion on her, and said to her, Weep not.

⁴³ And instantly he received his sight, and followed him, praising God. And all the people, when they saw this, gave praise to God.

⁵¹ Thereupon Jesus interposing, said, Permit thus long; and having touched his ear, healed him.

⁶ Having said this he spat on the ground, and made some clay with the spittle, and spread the clay on the blind man's eyes, ⁷ and said to him, Go, wash them at the pool of Siloam [the meaning, of which is Sent.] So he went and washed them and returned seeing.

³³ Therefore when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping who came with her, he restrained his spirit, and was troubled, ³⁴ and said, Where have you laid him? They say to him, Master, Come and see. ³⁵ Jesus wept.

¹⁸ to open their eyes, that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of satan to God, that they may receive a remission of sins and an inheritance among them who are sanctified by the belief in me.

¹⁷ whence it behoved him to be made like his brethren in all things; that he might be a merciful and faithful chief priest in things pertaining to God, to make atonement for the sins of the people.

¹⁶ Let us therefore come with confidence to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find favour for seasonable assistance.

⁸ Finally, be all of one mind, sympathising with one another, full of brotherly love, compassionate, courteous
