²⁴ Daughters of Israel, weep over Saul! He clothed you in scarlet luxury and decorated your garments with gold.

⁸ They are wet with the showers of hills, and embrace the rock for lack of shelter.

²¹ She is not afraid of the snow for her household; for all her household are clothed with scarlet.

¹⁶ Moreover LORD said, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with outstretched necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet, ¹⁷ therefore the Lord brings sores on the crown of the head of the women of Zion, and the LORD will make their scalps bald." ¹⁸ In that day the Lord will take away the finery of the anklets and the headbands and the crescent necklaces, ¹⁹ the earrings, the bracelets, the veils, ²⁰ the headdresses, the ankle chains, the sashes, the perfume bottles, the charms, ²¹ the signet rings, the nose rings, ²² the fine robes, the capes, the cloaks, the purses, ²³ and the mirrors and the linen garments, and the turbans and the wraps. ²⁴ It shall happen that instead of sweet spices, there shall be rottenness; instead of a belt, a rope; instead of well set hair, baldness; instead of a robe, a wearing of sackcloth; and branding instead of beauty. ²⁵ Your men shall fall by the sword, and your warriors in battle. ²⁶ and her gates shall lament and mourn; and, stripped, she shall sit upon the ground.

⁶ Therefore a curse devours the earth, and the inhabitants in it suffer for their guilt. Therefore the inhabitants of the earth burn, and few men are left. ⁷ The new wine dries up; the vine languishes. All the merry of heart sigh; ⁸ the joy of the tambourine has stopped. The noise of the jubilant has ceased; the joy of the lyre has stopped. ⁹ They no longer drink wine with a song. The beverage is bitter to its drinkers. ¹⁰ The ruined city lies desolate. The entrance to every house is barred and none may enter. ¹¹ In the streets they cry out for wine. Joy turns to gloom and rejoicing is banished from the earth. ¹² The city is left in ruins; its gate is battered to pieces.

⁹ Ye careless women rise up, hear my voice; ye daughters that are secure, give ear unto my speech. ¹⁰ In a year you will tremble, carefree ones, for the vintage will come to an end; the harvest will not come. ¹¹ Tremble you women who are at ease. Be troubled you complacent ones. Undress and put sackcloth on your waist, ¹² Beat your breasts for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vine. ¹³ On the land of my people shall come up thorns and briers; yes, on all the houses of joy in the joyous city: ¹⁴ For the palace will be forsaken, the crowded city deserted; the hill and the watchtower will become a cave forever, the joy of wild asses, a pasture for flocks.

² I will destroy the daughter of Zion, the beautiful and tender one. ³ Shepherds and their flocks will come against her, they will pitch their tents against her all around, they will pasture, each his portion.

²¹ For death has come into our windows, it has entered into our fortresses, to cut off the children from the streets, the young men from the public squares. ²² Speak, So says the LORD, Even the bodies of men shall fall as dung on the open field, and as the swath after the reaper, and no one shall gather them .

³ You that put off the day of disaster and bring near a reign of violence! ⁴ lying on ivory beds, stretching out on your couches, eating lambs from the flock, and fattened calves from the stall, ⁵ "You sing idle songs to the sound of the harp and like David you improvise on musical instruments. ⁶ who drink bowls of wine, and they anoint with the best of oils; but they are not grieved for the breaking of Joseph! ⁷ "Therefore you will be captured with the first that go captive. Your feasting and lounging will pass away."

²⁵ If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? Look, those who wear elegant clothing and live in luxury are found in palaces.

⁷ give her torment and pain in proportion to her pride and luxury; for she said in her heart, "I am enthron'd like a queen, I am no widow, and shall see no sorrow." ⁸ Therefore in one day her plagues will come, pestilence and mourning and famine, and she will be burned with fire; for mighty is the Lord God who judges her. ⁹ "The kings of the earth who have committed lewdness with her and have reveled luxuriously, when they see the smoke of her burning, will wail and beat their breasts.
