John 18:28-38

Riverside(i) 28 They led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Castle. It was early morning. The Jews did not enter the Castle, wishing to avoid defilement, so that they might eat the Passover. 29 Pilate went out to them and said, "What charge do you bring against this man?" 30 They answered, "If he were not an evil-doer, we should not have handed him over to you." 31 Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves and judge him by your law." The Jews said to him, "It is not lawful for us to put any one to death." 32 They said this that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled — the word he had spoken indicating by what death he was to die. 33 Pilate entered the Castle again and called Jesus and said to him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" 34 Jesus answered, "Do you say this of yourself or did others tell you about me?" 35 Pilate answered, "I am not a Jew, am I? Your nation and the high priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?" 36 Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my subordinates would be fighting to prevent my being delivered up to the Jews. But now my kingdom is not from here." 37 Pilate said to him, "Are you not a king then?" Jesus answered, "I am a king, as you say. For this I was born and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Every one who is of the truth listens to my voice." 38 Pilate said to him, "What is truth?" After saying this he went out again to the Jews and said to them, "I find no crime in him.
