VIN(i)
In the first month the whole congregation of Israel came into the Desert of Zin, and they stayed at Kadesh. Miriam died and was buried there.
There was no water for the community, and they were gathered before Moses and Aaron.
And the people quarreled with Moses and spoke, saying, "If only we died when our brothers were dying before the LORD!
"Did you bring the LORD's assembly into this desert just to have us all die and our animals?
And, why have you brought us up out of Egypt to bring us to this evil place, not a place of seed, nor fig, nor vine, nor pomegranate; and there is no water to drink?
Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the door of the Tent of Meeting, and fell on their faces: and the glory of the LORD appeared to them.
the LORD said to Moses:
"Take the staff and summon the community, you and Aaron your brother, and speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will give water. Bring out for them water from the rock, and let the community and their livestock drink."
So Moses took the staff from ⌊before⌋ Yahweh just as he command him,
Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, "Hear now, you rebels; shall we bring you water out of this rock for you?"
Then Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock with his staff twice. And abundant water went out, and the community and their livestock drank.
But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you have not trusted in me, to regard me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this assembly into the land that I have given to them."
Those were the waters of Meribah, where the Israelites quarreled with the LORD, and he showed himself holy among them.
Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom. He said: "This is what your brother Israel says: 'You know all the hardships we have had.
how our fathers went down into Egypt, and we lived in Egypt a long time. The Egyptians mistreated us and our fathers.
When we cried to the LORD, he heard our voice, sent an angel, and brought us out of Egypt. Behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the edge of your border.
Please let us go through your land. We will not go through a field or vineyard, and we will not drink water from a well. We will go along the road of the king; we will not turn aside right or left until we have gone through your territory.'"
Then Edom said to him, "You will not pass through us lest we will go out to meet you with the sword."
The Israelites said to him, "We will go up on the main road, and if we and our livestock drink your water, we will pay for it. It is only a small matter; let us pass through on our feet."
And he said, You shall not pass through. And Edom came out against him with many people, and with a strong hand.
Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his territory; and Israel turned away from him.
The sons of Israel, the whole congregation, journeyed from Kadesh and came to Mount Hor.
on the border of Edom. There the LORD said to Moses and Aaron:
"Let Aaron be gathered to his people; he will not come into the land that I have given to the Israelites because you rebelled against my word at the waters of Meribah.
Take Aaron and his son Eleazar, and cause them to go up to Mount Hor;
Strip off Aaron's garments, and put them on Eleazar his son; Aaron will be gathered to his people, and he will die there."
Moses did what the LORD commanded. They went up Mount Hor in the sight of the entire congregation.
Moses stripped Aaron of his garments, and put them on Eleazar his son. Aaron died there on the top of the mountain, and Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain.
And when all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, the whole house of Israel mourned for Aaron thirty days.
