¹ Παρῆσαν (Were present) δέ (now) τινες (some) ἐν (at) αὐτῷ (the same) τῷ (-) καιρῷ (time), ἀπαγγέλλοντες (telling) αὐτῷ (Him) περὶ (about) τῶν (the) Γαλιλαίων (Galileans) ὧν (of whom) τὸ (the) αἷμα (blood) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) ἔμιξεν (had mingled) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) θυσιῶν (sacrifices) αὐτῶν (of them). ² καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Δοκεῖτε (Think you) ὅτι (that) οἱ (-) Γαλιλαῖοι (Galileans) οὗτοι (these), ἁμαρτωλοὶ (sinners) παρὰ (beyond) πάντας (all) τοὺς (the) Γαλιλαίους (Galileans) ἐγένοντο (were), ὅτι (because) ταῦτα (such things) πεπόνθασιν (they have suffered)? ³ οὐχί (No), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you); ἀλλ’ (but) ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) μετανοῆτε (you repent), πάντες (all) ὁμοίως (likewise) ἀπολεῖσθε (you will perish). ⁴ ἢ (Or) ἐκεῖνοι (those) οἱ (-) δέκα‿ (ten and) οκτὼ (eight) ἐφ’ (on) οὓς (whom) ἔπεσεν (fell) ὁ (the) πύργος (tower) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Σιλωὰμ (Siloam) καὶ (and) ἀπέκτεινεν (killed) αὐτούς (them), δοκεῖτε (think you) ὅτι (that) αὐτοὶ (these) ὀφειλέται (debtors) ἐγένοντο (were) παρὰ (beyond) πάντας (all) τοὺς (the) ἀνθρώπους (men) τοὺς (-) κατοικοῦντας (dwelling) Ἰερουσαλήμ (in Jerusalem)? ⁵ οὐχί (No), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you); ἀλλ’ (but) ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) μετανοῆτε* (you repent), πάντες (all) ὡσαύτως (likewise) ἀπολεῖσθε (you will perish).” ⁶ Ἔλεγεν (He was speaking) δὲ (then) ταύτην (this) τὴν (-) παραβολήν (parable): “Συκῆν (A fig tree) εἶχέν (had) τις (a certain man) πεφυτευμένην (planted) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀμπελῶνι (vineyard) αὐτοῦ (of him); καὶ (and) ἦλθεν (he came) ζητῶν (seeking) καρπὸν (fruit) ἐν (on) αὐτῇ (it), καὶ (and) οὐχ (not) εὗρεν (did find any). ⁷ εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) ἀμπελουργόν (vinedresser), ‘Ἰδοὺ (Behold), τρία (three) ἔτη (years) ἀφ’ (throughout) οὗ (these) ἔρχομαι (I come) ζητῶν (seeking) καρπὸν (fruit) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) συκῇ (fig tree) ταύτῃ (this), καὶ (and) οὐχ (not) εὑρίσκω (do find any). ἔκκοψον (Cut down) [οὖν] (therefore) αὐτήν (it), ἵνα‿ (that) τί (why) καὶ (even) τὴν (the) γῆν (ground) καταργεῖ (should it use up)?’ ⁸ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), λέγει (he says) αὐτῷ (to him), ‘Κύριε (Sir), ἄφες (let alone) αὐτὴν (it) καὶ (also) τοῦτο (this) τὸ (the) ἔτος (year), ἕως (until) ὅτου (when) σκάψω (I shall dig) περὶ (around) αὐτὴν (it), καὶ (and) βάλω (put in) κόπρια (manure), ⁹ κἂν (and if) μὲν (indeed) ποιήσῃ (it should bear) καρπὸν (fruit) εἰς (in) τὸ (the time), μέλλον (so be it). εἰ (If) δὲ (however) μή¦γε (not), ἐκκόψεις (you will cut down) αὐτήν (it).’” ¹⁰ Ἦν (He was) δὲ (now) διδάσκων (teaching) ἐν (in) μιᾷ (one) τῶν (of the) συναγωγῶν (synagogues) ἐν (on) τοῖς (the) σάββασιν (Sabbaths). ¹¹ καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), γυνὴ (a woman) πνεῦμα (a spirit) ἔχουσα (having) ἀσθενείας (of infirmity), ἔτη (years) δέκα‿ (ten and) οκτώ (eight). καὶ (And) ἦν (she was) συνκύπτουσα (bent over) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) δυναμένη (able) ἀνακύψαι (to lift up herself) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) παντελές (full). ¹² ἰδὼν (Having seen) δὲ (then) αὐτὴν (her), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) προσεφώνησεν (called her near) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῇ (to her), “Γύναι (Woman), ἀπολέλυσαι (you have been freed from) τῆς (the) ἀσθενείας (sickness) σου (of you).” ¹³ καὶ (And) ἐπέθηκεν (He laid) αὐτῇ (upon her) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands), καὶ (and) παραχρῆμα (immediately) ἀνωρθώθη (she was made straight) καὶ (and) ἐδόξαζεν (began to glorify) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God). ¹⁴ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now) ὁ (the) ἀρχισυνάγωγος (ruler of the synagogue), ἀγανακτῶν (indignant) ὅτι (because) τῷ (on the) σαββάτῳ (Sabbath) ἐθεράπευσεν (had healed) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), ἔλεγεν (he was saying) τῷ (to the) ὄχλῳ (crowd) ὅτι (-), “Ἓξ (Six) ἡμέραι (days) εἰσὶν (there are) ἐν (in) αἷς (which) δεῖ (it behooves) ἐργάζεσθαι (to work); ἐν (in) αὐταῖς (these) οὖν (therefore) ἐρχόμενοι (coming) θεραπεύεσθε (be healed), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) τῇ (on the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τοῦ (of the) σαββάτου (Sabbath).” ¹⁵ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) δὲ (therefore) αὐτῷ (him) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said), “Ὑποκριταί (Hypocrites)! ἕκαστος (Each one) ὑμῶν (of you) τῷ (on the) σαββάτῳ (Sabbath), οὐ (not) λύει (does he untie) τὸν (the) βοῦν (ox) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἢ (or) τὸν (the) ὄνον (donkey), ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) φάτνης (stall), καὶ (and) ἀπαγαγὼν (having led it away), ποτίζει (give it to drink)? ¹⁶ ταύτην (This) δὲ (now), θυγατέρα (a daughter) Ἀβραὰμ (of Abraham) οὖσαν (being), ἣν (whom) ἔδησεν (has bound) ὁ (-) Σατανᾶς (Satan), ἰδοὺ (behold), δέκα (ten) καὶ (and) ὀκτὼ (eight) ἔτη (years), οὐκ (not) ἔδει (ought she) λυθῆναι (to be loosed) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) δεσμοῦ (bond) τούτου (this) τῇ (on the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τοῦ (of the) σαββάτου (Sabbath)?” ¹⁷ Καὶ (And) ταῦτα (these things) λέγοντος (on saying) αὐτοῦ (of Him), κατῃσχύνοντο (were ashamed) πάντες (all) οἱ (those) ἀντικείμενοι (opposed) αὐτῷ (to Him); καὶ (and) πᾶς (all) ὁ (the) ὄχλος (crowd) ἔχαιρεν (was rejoicing) ἐπὶ (at) πᾶσιν (all) τοῖς (the) ἐνδόξοις (glorious things) τοῖς (that) γινομένοις (were being done) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (Him). ¹⁸ Ἔλεγεν (He was saying) οὖν (then), “Τίνι (To what) ὁμοία (like) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God)? καὶ (And) τίνι (to what) ὁμοιώσω (shall I liken) αὐτήν (it)? ¹⁹ ὁμοία (Like) ἐστὶν (it is) κόκκῳ (to a grain) σινάπεως (of mustard), ὃν (which) λαβὼν (having taken), ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἔβαλεν (cast) εἰς (into) κῆπον (garden) ἑαυτοῦ (his); καὶ (and) ηὔξησεν (it grew) καὶ (and) ἐγένετο (came) εἰς (into) δένδρον (a tree), καὶ (and) τὰ (the) πετεινὰ (birds) τοῦ (of the) οὐρανοῦ (air) κατεσκήνωσεν (encamped) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) κλάδοις (branches) αὐτοῦ (of it).” ²⁰ Καὶ (And) πάλιν (again) εἶπεν (He said), “Τίνι (To what) ὁμοιώσω (shall I liken) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God)? ²¹ ὁμοία (Like) ἐστὶν (it is) ζύμῃ (to leaven), ἣν (which) λαβοῦσα (having taken), γυνὴ (a woman) ἔκρυψεν (hid) εἰς (in) ἀλεύρου (of meal) σάτα (measures) τρία (three) ἕως (until) οὗ (it) ἐζυμώθη (was leavened) ὅλον (all).” ²² Καὶ (And) διεπορεύετο (He was going through) κατὰ (by) πόλεις (towns) καὶ (and) κώμας (villages), διδάσκων (teaching), καὶ (and) πορείαν (progress) ποιούμενος (making) εἰς (toward) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem). ²³ Εἶπεν (Said) δέ (then) τις (one) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Κύριε (Lord), εἰ (if) ὀλίγοι (are few) οἱ (those) σῳζόμενοι (being saved)?” Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), ²⁴ “Ἀγωνίζεσθε (Strive) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter in) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) στενῆς (narrow) θύρας (door); ὅτι (for) πολλοί (many), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ζητήσουσιν (will seek) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter in), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἰσχύσουσιν (will be able). ²⁵ ἀφ’ (From) οὗ (what) ἂν (-) ἐγερθῇ (shall have risen up) ὁ (the) οἰκοδεσπότης (master of the house), καὶ (and) ἀποκλείσῃ (shall have shut) τὴν (the) θύραν (door), καὶ (then) ἄρξησθε (you should begin) ἔξω (outside) ἑστάναι (to stand) καὶ (and) κρούειν (to knock) τὴν (at the) θύραν (door), λέγοντες (saying), ‘Κύριε (Lord), ἄνοιξον (open) ἡμῖν (to us).’ Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (he answering), ἐρεῖ (will say) ὑμῖν (to you), ‘Οὐκ (Not) οἶδα (I do know) ὑμᾶς (you), πόθεν (from where) ἐστέ (are).’ ²⁶ Τότε (Then) ἄρξεσθε (will you begin) λέγειν (to say), ‘Ἐφάγομεν (We ate) ἐνώπιόν (in presence) σου (of you) καὶ (and) ἐπίομεν (drank), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) πλατείαις (streets) ἡμῶν (of us) ἐδίδαξας (you taught).’ ²⁷ Καὶ (And) ἐρεῖ (he will say), ‘Λέγων (I tell) ὑμῖν (you), Οὐκ (not) οἶδα (I do know) [ὑμᾶς] (you) πόθεν (from where) ἐστέ (you are); ἀπόστητε (depart) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (me), πάντες (all you) ἐργάται (workers) ἀδικίας (of unrighteousness).’ ²⁸ Ἐκεῖ (There) ἔσται (will be) ὁ (the) κλαυθμὸς (weeping) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) βρυγμὸς (gnashing) τῶν (of the) ὀδόντων (teeth) ὅταν (when) ὄψησθε (you see) Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham), καὶ (and) Ἰσαὰκ (Isaac), καὶ (and) Ἰακὼβ (Jacob), καὶ (and) πάντας (all) τοὺς (the) προφήτας (prophets), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God); ὑμᾶς (you) δὲ (however) ἐκβαλλομένους (are being cast) ἔξω (out). ²⁹ καὶ (And) ἥξουσιν (they will come) ἀπὸ (from) ἀνατολῶν (east) καὶ (and) δυσμῶν (west), καὶ (and) ἀπὸ (from) βορρᾶ (north) καὶ (and) νότου (south), καὶ (and) ἀνακλιθήσονται (will recline) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). ³⁰ καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), εἰσὶν (there are) ἔσχατοι (last) οἳ (who) ἔσονται (will be) πρῶτοι (first), καὶ (and) εἰσὶν (there are) πρῶτοι (first) οἳ (who) ἔσονται (will be) ἔσχατοι (last).” ³¹ Ἐν (In) αὐτῇ (same) τῇ (the) ὥρᾳ (hour) προσῆλθάν (came near) τινες (certain) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), λέγοντες (saying) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ἔξελθε (Go out) καὶ (and) πορεύου (proceed) ἐντεῦθεν (from here), ὅτι (for) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) θέλει (desires) σε (You) ἀποκτεῖναι (to kill).” ³² Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Πορευθέντες (Having gone), εἴπατε (say) τῇ (to the) ἀλώπεκι (fox) ταύτῃ (that), ‘Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἐκβάλλω (I cast out) δαιμόνια (demons), καὶ (and) ἰάσεις (cures) ἀποτελῶ (I complete) σήμερον (today) καὶ (and) αὔριον (tomorrow), καὶ (and) τῇ (the) τρίτῃ (third day) τελειοῦμαι (I am perfected).’ ³³ πλὴν (But) δεῖ (it behooves) με (Me) σήμερον (today) καὶ (and) αὔριον (tomorrow) καὶ (and) τῇ (the day) ἐχομένῃ (following) πορεύεσθαι (to proceed); ὅτι (for) οὐκ (not) ἐνδέχεται (it is possible for) προφήτην (a prophet) ἀπολέσθαι (to perish) ἔξω (outside of) Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem). ³⁴ Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem), Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem), ἡ (-) ἀποκτείνουσα (killing) τοὺς (the) προφήτας (prophets), καὶ (and) λιθοβολοῦσα (stoning) τοὺς (those) ἀπεσταλμένους (having been sent) πρὸς (to) αὐτήν (her), ποσάκις (how often) ἠθέλησα (I have wanted) ἐπισυνάξαι (to gather) τὰ (those) τέκνα (children) σου (of you), ὃν (that) τρόπον (way) ὄρνις (a hen gathers) τὴν (-) ἑαυτῆς (her) νοσσιὰν (brood) ὑπὸ (under) τὰς (the) πτέρυγας (wings), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἠθελήσατε (you were willing). ³⁵ ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἀφίεται (is left) ὑμῖν (to you) ὁ (the) οἶκος (house) ὑμῶν (of you). λέγω (I say) δὲ (now) ὑμῖν (to you), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ἴδητέ (shall you see) με (Me) ἕως (until) ἥξει (the time comes) ὅτε (when) εἴπητε (you say), ‘Εὐλογημένος (Blessed is) ὁ (the One) ἐρχόμενος (coming) ἐν (in) ὀνόματι (the name) Κυρίου (of the Lord).’”

² καὶ (And) δήσαντες (having bound) αὐτὸν (Him), ἀπήγαγον (they led away Him) καὶ (and) παρέδωκαν (delivered Him to) Πιλάτῳ (Pilate), τῷ (the) ἡγεμόνι (governor).

³⁷ μετὰ (After) τοῦτον (this man) ἀνέστη (rose up) Ἰούδας (Judas) ὁ (the) Γαλιλαῖος (Galilean) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) τῆς (of the) ἀπογραφῆς (registration) καὶ (and) ἀπέστησεν (drew away) λαὸν (people) ὀπίσω (after) αὐτοῦ (him). κἀκεῖνος (And he) ἀπώλετο (perished), καὶ (and) πάντες (all) ὅσοι (as many as) ἐπείθοντο (were persuaded) αὐτῷ (by him), διεσκορπίσθησαν (were scattered).

¹⁷ ὅτι (For it is) ὁ (the) καιρὸς (time for) τοῦ (-) ἄρξασθαι (to have begun) τὸ (the) κρίμα (judgment) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) οἴκου (house) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God); εἰ (if) δὲ (now) πρῶτον (first) ἀφ’ (from) ἡμῶν (us), τί (what will be) τὸ (the) τέλος (outcome) τῶν (of those) ἀπειθούντων (disobeying) τῷ (the) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) εὐαγγελίῳ (gospel)? ¹⁸ καὶ (And), “Εἰ (If) ὁ (the) δίκαιος (righteous one) μόλις (with difficulty) σώζεται (is saved), ὁ (the) ἀσεβὴς (ungodly) καὶ (and) ἁμαρτωλὸς (sinner) ποῦ (where) φανεῖται (will appear)?”

⁴ ἢ (Or) ἐκεῖνοι (those) οἱ (-) δέκα‿ (ten and) οκτὼ (eight) ἐφ’ (on) οὓς (whom) ἔπεσεν (fell) ὁ (the) πύργος (tower) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Σιλωὰμ (Siloam) καὶ (and) ἀπέκτεινεν (killed) αὐτούς (them), δοκεῖτε (think you) ὅτι (that) αὐτοὶ (these) ὀφειλέται (debtors) ἐγένοντο (were) παρὰ (beyond) πάντας (all) τοὺς (the) ἀνθρώπους (men) τοὺς (-) κατοικοῦντας (dwelling) Ἰερουσαλήμ (in Jerusalem)?

² καὶ (And) ἠρώτησαν (asked) αὐτὸν (Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) λέγοντες (saying), “Ῥαββί (Rabbi), τίς (who) ἥμαρτεν (sinned), οὗτος (this man) ἢ (or) οἱ (the) γονεῖς (parents) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἵνα (that) τυφλὸς (blind) γεννηθῇ (he should be born)?”

⁴ ὡς (When) δὲ (then) εἶδον (saw) οἱ (the) βάρβαροι (natives) κρεμάμενον (hanging) τὸ (the) θηρίον (beast) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) χειρὸς (hand) αὐτοῦ (of him), πρὸς (to) ἀλλήλους (one another) ἔλεγον (they began to say), “Πάντως (By all means) φονεύς (a murderer) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) ἄνθρωπος (man) οὗτος (this), ὃν (whom) διασωθέντα (having been saved) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) θαλάσσης (sea), ἡ (-) Δίκη (Justice) ζῆν (to live) οὐκ (not) εἴασεν (has permitted).”

² ‹καὶ› (and) λέγων (saying), “Μετανοεῖτε (Repent); ἤγγικεν (has drawn near) γὰρ (for) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens).”

¹⁰ ἤδη (Already) δὲ (now) ἡ (the) ἀξίνη (ax) πρὸς (to) τὴν (the) ῥίζαν (root) τῶν (of the) δένδρων (trees) κεῖται (is applied); πᾶν (every) οὖν (therefore) δένδρον (tree) μὴ (not) ποιοῦν (producing) καρπὸν (fruit) καλὸν (good) ἐκκόπτεται (is cut down) καὶ (and) εἰς (into) πῦρ (the fire) βάλλεται (is thrown). ¹¹ Ἐγὼ (I) μὲν (indeed) ὑμᾶς (you) βαπτίζω (baptize) ἐν (with) ὕδατι (water) εἰς (to) μετάνοιαν (repentance), ὁ (-) δὲ (but) ὀπίσω (after) μου (me) ἐρχόμενος (is coming) ἰσχυρότερός (mightier) μού (than I), ἐστιν (He) οὗ (of whom) οὐκ (not) εἰμὶ (I am) ἱκανὸς (fit) τὰ (the) ὑποδήματα (sandals) βαστάσαι (to carry). αὐτὸς (He) ὑμᾶς (you) βαπτίσει (will baptize) ἐν (with) Πνεύματι (the Spirit) Ἁγίῳ (Holy) καὶ (and) πυρί (with fire), ¹² οὗ (whose) τὸ (-) πτύον (winnowing fork is) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) χειρὶ (hand) αὐτοῦ (of Him); καὶ (and) διακαθαριεῖ (He will clear) τὴν (the) ἅλωνα (threshing floor) αὐτοῦ (of Him) καὶ (and) συνάξει (will gather) τὸν (the) σῖτον (wheat) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) ἀποθήκην (barn); τὸ (the) δὲ (but) ἄχυρον (chaff) κατακαύσει (He will burn up) πυρὶ (with fire) ἀσβέστῳ (unquenchable).”

⁴⁵ τότε (Then) πορεύεται (it goes) καὶ (and) παραλαμβάνει (takes) μεθ’ (with) ἑαυτοῦ (itself) ἑπτὰ (seven) ἕτερα (other) πνεύματα (spirits) πονηρότερα (more evil) ἑαυτοῦ (than itself), καὶ (and) εἰσελθόντα (having entered in), κατοικεῖ (they dwell) ἐκεῖ (there); καὶ (and) γίνεται (becomes) τὰ (the) ἔσχατα (last) τοῦ (of the) ἀνθρώπου (man) ἐκείνου (that) χείρονα (worse) τῶν (than the) πρώτων (first). οὕτως (So) ἔσται (it will be) καὶ (also) τῇ (unto) γενεᾷ (generation) ταύτῃ (this) τῇ (the) πονηρᾷ (evil).”

⁷ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) βασιλεὺς (the king) ὠργίσθη (was angry), καὶ (and) πέμψας (having sent) τὰ (the) στρατεύματα (armies) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἀπώλεσεν (he destroyed) τοὺς (the) φονεῖς (murderers) ἐκείνους (those), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) πόλιν (city) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐνέπρησεν (he burned).

³⁵ ὅπως (so that) ἔλθῃ (shall come) ἐφ’ (upon) ὑμᾶς (you) πᾶν (all the) αἷμα (blood) δίκαιον (righteous) ἐκχυννόμενον (being poured out) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) αἵματος (blood) Ἅβελ (of Abel) τοῦ (the) δικαίου (righteous), ἕως (to) τοῦ (the) αἵματος (blood) Ζαχαρίου (of Zechariah) υἱοῦ (son) Βαραχίου (of Berekiah), ὃν (whom) ἐφονεύσατε (you murdered) μεταξὺ (between) τοῦ (the) ναοῦ (temple) καὶ (and) τοῦ (the) θυσιαστηρίου (altar). ³⁶ ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἥξει (will come) ταῦτα (these things) πάντα (all) ἐπὶ (upon) τὴν (the) γενεὰν (generation) ταύτην (this). ³⁷ Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem), Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem), ἡ (-) ἀποκτείνουσα (killing) τοὺς (the) προφήτας (prophets) καὶ (and) λιθοβολοῦσα (stoning) τοὺς (those) ἀπεσταλμένους (having been sent) πρὸς (to) αὐτήν (her)! ποσάκις (How often) ἠθέλησα (would I) ἐπισυναγαγεῖν (have gathered together) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) σου (of you), ὃν (in which) τρόπον (way) ὄρνις (a hen) ἐπισυνάγει (gathers together) τὰ (the) νοσσία (chicks) αὐτῆς (of her) ὑπὸ (under) τὰς (the) πτέρυγας (wings), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἠθελήσατε (you were willing)! ³⁸ ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἀφίεται (is left) ὑμῖν (to you) ὁ (the) οἶκος (house) ὑμῶν (of you) ‹ἔρημος› (desolate)!

²¹ ἔσται (There will be) γὰρ (for) τότε (then) θλῖψις (tribulation) μεγάλη (great), οἵα (such as) οὐ (not) γέγονεν (has been) ἀπ’ (from the) ἀρχῆς (beginning) κόσμου (of the world) ἕως (until) τοῦ (-) νῦν (now), οὐδ’ (no) οὐ (never) μὴ (not) γένηται (shall be). ²² καὶ (And) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ἐκολοβώθησαν (had been shortened) αἱ (the) ἡμέραι (days) ἐκεῖναι (those), οὐκ (not) ἂν (-) ἐσώθη (there would have been saved) πᾶσα (any) σάρξ (flesh); διὰ (because of) δὲ (however) τοὺς (the) ἐκλεκτοὺς (elect), κολοβωθήσονται (will be shortened) αἱ (the) ἡμέραι (days) ἐκεῖναι (those). ²³ Τότε (Then) ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) ὑμῖν (to you) εἴπῃ (says), ‘Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ὧδε (here is) ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ),’ ἤ (or) ‘Ὧδε (Here),’ μὴ (not) πιστεύσητε (believe it). ²⁴ ἐγερθήσονται (There will arise) γὰρ (for) ψευδόχριστοι (false Christs) καὶ (and) ψευδοπροφῆται (false prophets), καὶ (and) δώσουσιν (they will give) σημεῖα (signs) μεγάλα (great), καὶ (and) τέρατα (wonders), ὥστε (so as) πλανῆσαι (to mislead), εἰ (if) δυνατὸν (possible), καὶ (even) τοὺς (the) ἐκλεκτούς (elect). ²⁵ ἰδοὺ (Behold), προείρηκα (I have foretold it) ὑμῖν (to you). ²⁶ Ἐὰν (If) οὖν (therefore) εἴπωσιν (they say) ὑμῖν (to you), ‘Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐρήμῳ (wilderness) ἐστίν (He is),’ μὴ (not) ἐξέλθητε (go forth); Ἰδοὺ (or ‘Behold), ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ταμείοις (inner rooms),’ μὴ (not) πιστεύσητε (believe it). ²⁷ ὥσπερ (Just as) γὰρ (for) ἡ (the) ἀστραπὴ (lightning) ἐξέρχεται (comes forth) ἀπὸ (from the) ἀνατολῶν (east) καὶ (and) φαίνεται (shines) ἕως (as far as the) δυσμῶν (west), οὕτως (so) ἔσται (will be) ἡ (the) παρουσία (coming) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man). ²⁸ ὅπου (For wherever) ἐὰν (if) ᾖ (may be) τὸ (the) πτῶμα (carcass), ἐκεῖ (there) συναχθήσονται (will be gathered) οἱ (the) ἀετοί (vultures). ²⁹ Εὐθέως (Immediately) δὲ (then) μετὰ (after) τὴν (the) θλῖψιν (tribulation) τῶν (the) ἡμερῶν (days) ἐκείνων (of those): ‘Ὁ (The) ἥλιος (sun) σκοτισθήσεται (will be darkened), Καὶ (and) ἡ (the) σελήνη (moon) οὐ (not) δώσει (will give) τὸ (the) φέγγος (light) αὐτῆς (of it), Καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἀστέρες (stars) πεσοῦνται (will fall) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) οὐρανοῦ (sky), Καὶ (and) αἱ (the) δυνάμεις (powers) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) σαλευθήσονται (will be shaken).’

⁵ οὐχί (No), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you); ἀλλ’ (but) ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) μετανοῆτε* (you repent), πάντες (all) ὡσαύτως (likewise) ἀπολεῖσθε (you will perish).”

⁴² λέγων (saying) ὅτι (-), “Εἰ (If) ἔγνως (you had known) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ταύτῃ (this), καὶ (even) σὺ (you), τὰ (the things) πρὸς (for) εἰρήνην (peace)! νῦν (Now) δὲ (however) ἐκρύβη (they are hidden) ἀπὸ (from) ὀφθαλμῶν (eyes) σου (of you). ⁴³ ὅτι (For) ἥξουσιν (will come) ἡμέραι (days) ἐπὶ (upon) σὲ (you) καὶ (that) παρεμβαλοῦσιν (will cast around) οἱ (the) ἐχθροί (enemies) σου (of you) χάρακά (a barricade) σοι (you); καὶ (and) περικυκλώσουσίν (they will surround) σε (you) καὶ (and) συνέξουσίν (will hem in) σε (you) πάντοθεν (on every side), ⁴⁴ καὶ (and) ἐδαφιοῦσίν (will level to the ground) σε (you) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) σου (of you) ἐν (within) σοί (you), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἀφήσουσιν (will leave) λίθον (a stone) ἐπὶ (upon) λίθον (a stone) ἐν (within) σοί (you), ἀνθ’ (in place of) ὧν (which) οὐκ (not) ἔγνως (you knew) τὸν (the) καιρὸν (season) τῆς (the) ἐπισκοπῆς (of visitation) σου (of you).”

²² ὅτι (for) ἡμέραι (the days) ἐκδικήσεως (of avenging) αὗταί (these) εἰσιν (are), τοῦ (-) πλησθῆναι (to fulfill) πάντα (all things) τὰ (-) γεγραμμένα (having been written). ²³ Οὐαὶ (But woe) ταῖς (to those) ἐν (in) γαστρὶ (womb) ἐχούσαις (having), καὶ (and) ταῖς (to the ones) θηλαζούσαις (nursing) ἐν (in) ἐκείναις (those) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days); ἔσται (there will be) γὰρ (for) ἀνάγκη (distress) μεγάλη (great) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (land) καὶ (and) ὀργὴ (wrath) τῷ (to the) λαῷ (people) τούτῳ (this). ²⁴ καὶ (And) πεσοῦνται (they will fall) στόματι (by the edge) μαχαίρης (of the sword), καὶ (and) αἰχμαλωτισθήσονται (will be led captive) εἰς (into) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (nations); πάντα (all) καὶ (and) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem) ἔσται (will be) πατουμένη (trodden down) ὑπὸ (by) ἐθνῶν (the Gentiles), ἄχρι (until) οὗ (that) πληρωθῶσιν (are fulfilled) καιροὶ (the times) ἐθνῶν (of the Gentiles).

²⁸ στραφεὶς (Having turned) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) αὐτὰς (them), ‹ὁ› (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said), “Θυγατέρες (Daughters) Ἰερουσαλήμ (of Jerusalem), μὴ (not) κλαίετε (weep) ἐπ’ (for) ἐμέ (Me), πλὴν (but) ἐφ’ (for) ἑαυτὰς (yourselves) κλαίετε (weep), καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (for) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) ὑμῶν (of you). ²⁹ ὅτι (For) ἰδοὺ (behold), ἔρχονται (are coming) ἡμέραι (days) ἐν (in) αἷς (which) ἐροῦσιν (they will say), ‘Μακάριαι (Blessed are) αἱ (the) στεῖραι (barren), καὶ (and) αἱ (the) κοιλίαι (wombs) αἳ (that) οὐκ (never) ἐγέννησαν (did bear), καὶ (and) μαστοὶ (breasts) οἳ (that) οὐκ (never) ἔθρεψαν (nursed).’ ³⁰ τότε (Then) ‘Ἄρξονται (They will begin) λέγειν (to say) τοῖς (to the) ὄρεσιν (mountains), “Πέσετε* (Fall) ἐφ’ (upon) ἡμᾶς (us),” Καὶ (and) τοῖς (to the) βουνοῖς (hills), “Καλύψατε (Cover) ἡμᾶς (us).”’

⁴⁷ καὶ (and) κηρυχθῆναι (to be proclaimed) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him) μετάνοιαν (repentance) εἰς (and) ἄφεσιν (forgiveness) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins) εἰς (to) πάντα (all) τὰ (-) ἔθνη (nations), ἀρξάμενοι (having begun) ἀπὸ (from) Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem).

³⁸ Πέτρος (Peter) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Μετανοήσατε (Repent),” [φησίν] (he declared), “Καὶ (and) βαπτισθήτω (be baptized), ἕκαστος (every one) ὑμῶν (of you), ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) εἰς (for the) ἄφεσιν (forgiveness) τῶν (of the) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) λήμψεσθε (you will receive) τὴν (the) δωρεὰν (gift) τοῦ (of the) Ἁγίου (Holy) Πνεύματος (Spirit). ³⁹ ὑμῖν (To you) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) ἐπαγγελία (promise), καὶ (and) τοῖς (to the) τέκνοις (children) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) πᾶσιν (to all) τοῖς (those) εἰς (at) μακρὰν (a distance), ὅσους (as many as) ἂν (-) προσκαλέσηται (shall call to Himself) Κύριος (the Lord), ὁ (the) Θεὸς (God) ἡμῶν (of us).” ⁴⁰ Ἑτέροις (Other) τε (and) λόγοις (words) πλείοσιν (many) διεμαρτύρατο (he earnestly testified), καὶ (and) παρεκάλει (was exhorting) αὐτοὺς (them), λέγων (saying), “Σώθητε (Be saved) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) γενεᾶς (generation) τῆς (-) σκολιᾶς (perverse) ταύτης (this).”

¹⁹ μετανοήσατε (Repent), οὖν (therefore), καὶ (and) ἐπιστρέψατε (turn again), πρὸς (for) τὸ (the) ἐξαλειφθῆναι (blotting out) ὑμῶν (of your) τὰς (-) ἁμαρτίας (sins),

²¹ καὶ (And) ἔδωκα (I have given) αὐτῇ (her) χρόνον (time) ἵνα (that) μετανοήσῃ (she might repent), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) θέλει (she is willing) μετανοῆσαι (to repent) ἐκ (of) τῆς (the) πορνείας (sexual immorality) αὐτῆς (of her). ²² Ἰδοὺ (Behold), βάλλω (I will cast) αὐτὴν (her) εἰς (into) κλίνην (a sickbed), καὶ (and) τοὺς (those) μοιχεύοντας (committing adultery) μετ’ (with) αὐτῆς (her) εἰς (into) θλῖψιν (tribulation) μεγάλην (great), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) μετανοήσωσιν* (they shall repent) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) ἔργων (deeds) αὐτῆς (of her).

¹² Καὶ (And) ἄφες (forgive) ἡμῖν (us) τὰ (the) ὀφειλήματα (debts) ἡμῶν (of us), Ὡς (as) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we) ἀφήκαμεν (forgive) τοῖς (the) ὀφειλέταις (debtors) ἡμῶν (of us);

²⁴ ἀρξαμένου (Having begun) δὲ (then) αὐτοῦ (he) συναίρειν (to settle), προσηνέχθη* (was brought) εἷς (one) αὐτῷ (to him), ὀφειλέτης (a debtor) μυρίων (of ten thousand) ταλάντων (talents).

⁴¹ “Δύο (Two) χρεοφειλέται (debtors) ἦσαν (there were) δανιστῇ (to a creditor) τινι (certain); ὁ (the) εἷς (one) ὤφειλεν (owed) δηνάρια (denarii) πεντακόσια (five hundred); ὁ (-) δὲ (and) ἕτερος (the other), πεντήκοντα (fifty). ⁴² μὴ (Nothing) ἐχόντων (having) αὐτῶν (they) ἀποδοῦναι (to pay), ἀμφοτέροις (both) ἐχαρίσατο (he forgave). τίς (Which) οὖν (therefore) αὐτῶν (of them), πλεῖον (more) ἀγαπήσει (will love) αὐτόν (him)?”

⁴ Καὶ (And) ἄφες (forgive) ἡμῖν (us) τὰς (the) ἁμαρτίας (sins) ἡμῶν (of us), Καὶ (also) γὰρ (for) αὐτοὶ (ourselves) ἀφίομεν (we forgive) παντὶ (everyone) ὀφείλοντι (indebted) ἡμῖν (to us); Καὶ (and) μὴ (not) εἰσενέγκῃς (lead) ἡμᾶς (us) εἰς (into) πειρασμόν (temptation).’”

⁷ καὶ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ὕπαγε (Go), νίψαι (wash) εἰς (in) τὴν (the) κολυμβήθραν (pool) τοῦ (-) Σιλωάμ (of Siloam),” ὃ (which) ἑρμηνεύεται (means) Ἀπεσταλμένος (Sent). ἀπῆλθεν (He went) οὖν (therefore) καὶ (and) ἐνίψατο (washed), καὶ (and) ἦλθεν (came back) βλέπων (seeing).

¹¹ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) ἐκεῖνος (He), “Ὁ (The) ἄνθρωπος (man) ὁ (-) λεγόμενος (called) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) πηλὸν (clay) ἐποίησεν (made), καὶ (and) ἐπέχρισέν (anointed) μου (of me) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes), καὶ (and) εἶπέν (He said) μοι (to me) ὅτι (-), ‘Ὕπαγε (Go) εἰς (to) τὸν (-) Σιλωὰμ (Siloam) καὶ (and) νίψαι (wash).’ ἀπελθὼν (Having gone) οὖν (therefore) καὶ (and) νιψάμενος (having washed), ἀνέβλεψα (I received sight).”

³ οὐχί (No), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you); ἀλλ’ (but) ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) μετανοῆτε (you repent), πάντες (all) ὁμοίως (likewise) ἀπολεῖσθε (you will perish).

¹⁹ καὶ (And) ἰδὼν (having seen) συκῆν (fig tree) μίαν (one) ἐπὶ (along) τῆς (the) ὁδοῦ (road), ἦλθεν (He came) ἐπ’ (to) αὐτήν (it) καὶ (and) οὐδὲν (nothing) εὗρεν (found) ἐν (on) αὐτῇ (it), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) φύλλα (leaves) μόνον (only). καὶ (And) λέγει (He says) αὐτῇ (to it), “〈Οὐ〉 (Never) μηκέτι (no more) ἐκ (from) σοῦ (you) καρπὸς (fruit) γένηται (let there be), εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age).” καὶ (And) ἐξηράνθη (withered) παραχρῆμα (immediately) ἡ (the) συκῆ (fig tree). ²⁰ Καὶ (And) ἰδόντες (having seen it), οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) ἐθαύμασαν (marveled), λέγοντες (saying), “Πῶς (How) παραχρῆμα (so quickly) ἐξηράνθη (withered) ἡ (the) συκῆ (fig tree)?”

³⁴ Ὅτε (When) δὲ (then) ἤγγισεν (drew near) ὁ (the) καιρὸς (season) τῶν (of the) καρπῶν (fruits), ἀπέστειλεν (he sent) τοὺς (the) δούλους (servants) αὐτοῦ (of him) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) γεωργοὺς (farmers) λαβεῖν (to receive) τοὺς (the) καρποὺς (fruits) αὐτοῦ (of him). ³⁵ καὶ (And) λαβόντες (having taken) οἱ (the) γεωργοὶ (farmers) τοὺς (the) δούλους (servants) αὐτοῦ (of him), ὃν (one) μὲν (-) ἔδειραν (they beat), ὃν (one) δὲ (then) ἀπέκτειναν (they killed), ὃν (one) δὲ (then) ἐλιθοβόλησαν (they stoned). ³⁶ Πάλιν (Again) ἀπέστειλεν (he sent) ἄλλους (other) δούλους (servants), πλείονας (more) τῶν (than the) πρώτων (first), καὶ (and) ἐποίησαν (they did) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὡσαύτως (likewise). ³⁷ Ὕστερον (Afterward) δὲ (then), ἀπέστειλεν (he sent) πρὸς (to) αὐτοὺς (them) τὸν (the) υἱὸν (son) αὐτοῦ (of him), λέγων (saying), ‘Ἐντραπήσονται (They will respect) τὸν (the) υἱόν (son) μου (of me).’ ³⁸ Οἱ (-) δὲ (But) γεωργοὶ (the farmers) ἰδόντες (having seen) τὸν (the) υἱὸν (son), εἶπον (said) ἐν (among) ἑαυτοῖς (themselves), ‘Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) κληρονόμος (heir); δεῦτε (come), ἀποκτείνωμεν (let us kill) αὐτὸν (him) καὶ (and) σχῶμεν (gain possession of) τὴν (the) κληρονομίαν (inheritance) αὐτοῦ (of him).’ ³⁹ καὶ (And) λαβόντες (having taking) αὐτὸν (him), ἐξέβαλον (they cast him) ἔξω (out of) τοῦ (the) ἀμπελῶνος (vineyard) καὶ (and) ἀπέκτειναν (killed him). ⁴⁰ Ὅταν (When) οὖν (therefore) ἔλθῃ (shall come) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) τοῦ (of the) ἀμπελῶνος (vineyard), τί (what) ποιήσει (will he do) τοῖς (the) γεωργοῖς (farmers) ἐκείνοις (to those)?”

¹² Καὶ (And) τῇ (on the) ἐπαύριον (next day), ἐξελθόντων (having gone out) αὐτῶν (they) ἀπὸ (from) Βηθανίας (Bethany), ἐπείνασεν (He was hungry). ¹³ καὶ (And) ἰδὼν (having seen) συκῆν (a fig tree) ἀπὸ (from) μακρόθεν (afar), ἔχουσαν (having) φύλλα (leaves), ἦλθεν (He went) εἰ (if) ἄρα (perhaps) τι (anything) εὑρήσει (He will find) ἐν (on) αὐτῇ (it). καὶ (And) ἐλθὼν (having come) ἐπ’ (to) αὐτὴν (it), οὐδὲν (nothing) εὗρεν (He found), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) φύλλα (leaves); ὁ (the) γὰρ (for) καιρὸς (season) οὐκ (not) ἦν (it was) σύκων (of figs). ¹⁴ καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), εἶπεν (He said) αὐτῇ (to it), “Μηκέτι (No more) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age), ἐκ (of) σοῦ (you) μηδεὶς (no one) καρπὸν (fruit) φάγοι (may eat).” καὶ (And) ἤκουον (were listening) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

¹⁰ καὶ (And) καιρῷ (in the season), ἀπέστειλεν (he sent) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) γεωργοὺς (farmers) δοῦλον (a servant), ἵνα (that) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) καρποῦ (fruit) τοῦ (of the) ἀμπελῶνος (vineyard) δώσουσιν (they will give) αὐτῷ (to him). οἱ (-) δὲ (But) γεωργοὶ (the farmers) ἐξαπέστειλαν (sent away) αὐτὸν (him), δείραντες (having beaten him), κενόν (empty-handed). ¹¹ Καὶ (And) προσέθετο (he proceeded) ἕτερον (another) πέμψαι (to send) δοῦλον (a servant); οἱ (-) δὲ (but) κἀκεῖνον (him) δείραντες (having beaten) καὶ (and) ἀτιμάσαντες (having dishonored), ἐξαπέστειλαν (they sent away) κενόν (empty-handed). ¹² Καὶ (And) προσέθετο (he proceeded) τρίτον (a third) πέμψαι (to send); οἱ (-) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) τοῦτον (him) τραυματίσαντες (having wounded), ἐξέβαλον (they cast out). ¹³ Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) τοῦ (of the) ἀμπελῶνος (vineyard), ‘Τί (What) ποιήσω (shall I do)? πέμψω (I will send) τὸν (the) υἱόν (son) μου (of me), τὸν (the) ἀγαπητόν (beloved); ἴσως (perhaps) τοῦτον (him) ἐντραπήσονται (they will respect).’ ¹⁴ Ἰδόντες (Having seen) δὲ (now) αὐτὸν (him), οἱ (the) γεωργοὶ (farmers) διελογίζοντο (began reasoning) πρὸς (among) ἀλλήλους (themselves), λέγοντες (saying), ‘Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) κληρονόμος (heir); ἀποκτείνωμεν (let us kill) αὐτόν (him), ἵνα (so that) ἡμῶν (ours) γένηται (might become) ἡ (the) κληρονομία (inheritance).’

²² Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) καρπὸς (the fruit) τοῦ (of the) Πνεύματός (Spirit) ἐστιν (is) ἀγάπη (love), χαρά (joy), εἰρήνη (peace), μακροθυμία (patience), χρηστότης (kindness), ἀγαθωσύνη (goodness), πίστις (faithfulness),

¹⁷ Οὐχ (Not) ὅτι (that) ἐπιζητῶ (I seek after) τὸ (the) δόμα (gift), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐπιζητῶ (I seek after) τὸν (the) καρπὸν (fruit) τὸν (-) πλεονάζοντα (abounding) εἰς (to) λόγον (the account) ὑμῶν (of you).

⁹ καὶ (And) μὴ (not) δόξητε (presume) λέγειν (to say) ἐν (within) ἑαυτοῖς (yourselves), ‘Πατέρα (As father) ἔχομεν (we have) τὸν (-) Ἀβραάμ (Abraham).’ λέγω (I say) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) δύναται (able is) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐκ (out of) τῶν (the) λίθων (stones) τούτων (these) ἐγεῖραι (to raise up) τέκνα (children) τῷ (unto) Ἀβραάμ (Abraham). ¹⁰ ἤδη (Already) δὲ (now) ἡ (the) ἀξίνη (ax) πρὸς (to) τὴν (the) ῥίζαν (root) τῶν (of the) δένδρων (trees) κεῖται (is applied); πᾶν (every) οὖν (therefore) δένδρον (tree) μὴ (not) ποιοῦν (producing) καρπὸν (fruit) καλὸν (good) ἐκκόπτεται (is cut down) καὶ (and) εἰς (into) πῦρ (the fire) βάλλεται (is thrown).

¹⁹ πᾶν (Every) δένδρον (tree) μὴ (not) ποιοῦν (producing) καρπὸν (fruit) καλὸν (good) ἐκκόπτεται (is cut down) καὶ (and) εἰς (into) πῦρ (fire) βάλλεται (is thrown).

⁹ ἤδη (Already) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) ἡ (the) ἀξίνη (ax) πρὸς (to) τὴν (the) ῥίζαν (root) τῶν (of the) δένδρων (trees) κεῖται (is applied); πᾶν (every) οὖν (therefore) δένδρον (tree) μὴ (not) ποιοῦν (producing) καρπὸν (fruit) καλὸν (good) ἐκκόπτεται (is cut down) καὶ (and) εἰς (into) πῦρ (the fire) βάλλεται (is thrown).”

² πᾶν (Every) κλῆμα (branch) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) μὴ (not) φέρον (bearing) καρπὸν (fruit), αἴρει (He takes away) αὐτό (it); καὶ (and) πᾶν (every one) τὸ (-) καρπὸν (fruit) φέρον (bearing), καθαίρει (He prunes) αὐτὸ (it), ἵνα (that) καρπὸν (fruit) πλείονα (more) φέρῃ (it may bear).

⁶ ἐὰν (If) μή (not) τις (anyone) μένῃ (abide) ἐν (in) ἐμοί (Me), ἐβλήθη (he is thrown) ἔξω (out) ὡς (like) τὸ (the) κλῆμα (branch) καὶ (and) ἐξηράνθη (is dried up), καὶ (and) συνάγουσιν (they gather) αὐτὰ (them) καὶ (and) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πῦρ (fire) βάλλουσιν (cast), καὶ (and) καίεται (it is burned).

⁴ ἢ (Or) τοῦ (the) πλούτου (riches) τῆς (of the) χρηστότητος (kindness) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) τῆς (the) ἀνοχῆς (forbearance), καὶ (and) τῆς (the) μακροθυμίας (patience) καταφρονεῖς (despise you), ἀγνοῶν (not knowing) ὅτι (that) τὸ (the) χρηστὸν (kindness) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) εἰς (to) μετάνοιάν (repentance) σε (you) ἄγει (leads)? ⁵ Κατὰ (Because of) δὲ (however) τὴν (the) σκληρότητά (hardness) σου (of you) καὶ (and) ἀμετανόητον (unrepentant) καρδίαν (heart), θησαυρίζεις (you are treasuring up) σεαυτῷ (to yourself) ὀργὴν (wrath) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (the day) ὀργῆς (of wrath) καὶ (and) ἀποκαλύψεως (revelation) δικαιοκρισίας (of righteous judgement) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God),

¹ Ἀδελφοί (Brothers), ἡ (the) μὲν (indeed) εὐδοκία (desire) τῆς (-) ἐμῆς (of my) καρδίας (heart) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) δέησις (supplication) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) ὑπὲρ (on behalf of) αὐτῶν (them) εἰς (is for) σωτηρίαν (salvation).

¹⁴ εἴ (if) πως (at all) παραζηλώσω (I shall provoke to jealousy) μου (of me) τὴν (the) σάρκα (flesh), καὶ (and) σώσω (shall save) τινὰς (some) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them).

⁹ οὐ (Not) βραδύνει (does delay) Κύριος (the Lord) τῆς (the) ἐπαγγελίας (promise), ὥς (as) τινες (some) βραδύτητα (slowness) ἡγοῦνται (esteem), ἀλλὰ (but) μακροθυμεῖ (is patient) εἰς (toward) ὑμᾶς (you), μὴ (not) βουλόμενός (willing) τινας (for any) ἀπολέσθαι (to perish), ἀλλὰ (but) πάντας (all) εἰς (to) μετάνοιαν (repentance) χωρῆσαι (to come).

¹⁵ τῶν (who) καὶ (both) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) ἀποκτεινάντων (having killed), Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), καὶ (and) τοὺς (their own) προφήτας (prophets), καὶ (and) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐκδιωξάντων (having driven out), καὶ (and) Θεῷ (God) μὴ (not) ἀρεσκόντων (pleasing), καὶ (and) πᾶσιν (all) ἀνθρώποις (men) ἐναντίων (who are set against),

⁸ ἐκφέρουσα (That bringing forth) δὲ (however) ἀκάνθας (thorns) καὶ (and) τριβόλους (thistles) ἀδόκιμος (is worthless) καὶ (and) κατάρας (a curse) ἐγγύς (near to), ἧς (of which) τὸ (the) τέλος (end is) εἰς (unto) καῦσιν (burning).

³ καὶ (And) ᾄδουσιν (they are singing) τὴν (the) ᾠδὴν (song) Μωϋσέως (of Moses), τοῦ (the) δούλου (servant) τοῦ (of) Θεοῦ (God), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) ᾠδὴν (song) τοῦ (of the) Ἀρνίου (Lamb), λέγοντες (saying): “Μεγάλα (Great) καὶ (and) θαυμαστὰ (wonderful are) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) σου (of You), Κύριε (Lord) ὁ (-) Θεός (God) ὁ (the) Παντοκράτωρ (Almighty)! δίκαιαι (Righteous) καὶ (and) ἀληθιναὶ (true are) αἱ (the) ὁδοί (ways) σου (of You), ὁ (O) Βασιλεὺς (King) τῶν (of the) ἐθνῶν (nations)! ⁴ τίς (Who) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) φοβηθῇ (should fear You), Κύριε (O Lord), καὶ (and) δοξάσει (will glorify) τὸ (the) ὄνομά (name) σου (of You)? ὅτι (For You) μόνος (alone are) ὅσιος (holy). ὅτι (For) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (nations) ἥξουσιν (will come) καὶ (and) προσκυνήσουσιν (will worship) ἐνώπιόν (before) σου (You), ὅτι (because) τὰ (the) δικαιώματά (righteous acts) σου (of You) ἐφανερώθησαν (have been revealed).”

⁵ Καὶ (And) ἤκουσα (I heard) τοῦ (the) ἀγγέλου (angel) τῶν (of the) ὑδάτων (waters) λέγοντος (saying): “Δίκαιος (Righteous) εἶ (are You), ὁ (the One) ὢν (being), καὶ (and) ὁ (-) ἦν (having been), ὁ (O) Ὅσιος (holy One), ὅτι (because) ταῦτα (these things) ἔκρινας (You have judged), ⁶ ὅτι (because) αἷμα (the blood) ἁγίων (of saints) καὶ (and) προφητῶν (of prophets) ἐξέχεαν (they have poured out), καὶ (and) αἷμα (blood) αὐτοῖς (to them) δέδωκας (You have given) πιεῖν* (to drink); ἄξιοί (worthy) εἰσιν (they are).” ⁷ Καὶ (And) ἤκουσα (I heard) τοῦ (the) θυσιαστηρίου (altar) λέγοντος (saying): “Ναί (Yes), Κύριε (Lord) ὁ (-) Θεός (God) ὁ (-) Παντοκράτωρ (Almighty), ἀληθιναὶ (true) καὶ (and) δίκαιαι (righteous are) αἱ (the) κρίσεις (judgments) σου (of You).”

²³ Καὶ (And) περιῆγεν (He was going) ἐν (throughout) ὅλῃ (all) τῇ (-) Γαλιλαίᾳ (Galilee), διδάσκων (teaching) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συναγωγαῖς (synagogues) αὐτῶν (of them), καὶ (and) κηρύσσων (proclaiming) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) τῆς (of the) βασιλείας (kingdom), καὶ (and) θεραπεύων (healing) πᾶσαν (every) νόσον (disease) καὶ (and) πᾶσαν (every) μαλακίαν (sickness) ἐν (among) τῷ (the) λαῷ (people).

¹⁵ καὶ (And) αὐτὸς (He) ἐδίδασκεν (was teaching) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συναγωγαῖς (synagogues) αὐτῶν (of them), δοξαζόμενος (being glorified) ὑπὸ (by) πάντων (all). ¹⁶ Καὶ (And) ἦλθεν (He came) εἰς (to) Ναζαρά (Nazareth), οὗ (where) ἦν (He had been) τεθραμμένος (brought up); καὶ (and) εἰσῆλθεν (He entered) κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) εἰωθὸς (custom) αὐτῷ (to Him), ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τῶν (of the) σαββάτων (Sabbaths), εἰς (into) τὴν (the) συναγωγήν (synagogue), καὶ (and) ἀνέστη (stood up) ἀναγνῶναι (to read).

⁴⁴ Καὶ (And) ἦν (He was) κηρύσσων (preaching) εἰς (in) τὰς (the) συναγωγὰς (synagogues) τῆς (-) Ἰουδαίας (of Judea).

³² Αὐτῶν (As they) δὲ (now) ἐξερχομένων (were going out), ἰδοὺ (behold), προσήνεγκαν (they brought) αὐτῷ (to Him) ‹ἄνθρωπον› (a man) κωφὸν (mute), δαιμονιζόμενον (possessed by a demon). ³³ καὶ (And) ἐκβληθέντος (having been cast out) τοῦ (the) δαιμονίου (demon), ἐλάλησεν (spoke) ὁ (the) κωφός (mute man). καὶ (And) ἐθαύμασαν (marveled) οἱ (the) ὄχλοι (crowds), λέγοντες (saying), “Οὐδέποτε (Never) ἐφάνη (was it seen) οὕτως (thus) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Ἰσραήλ (Israel).”

²¹ Καὶ (And) ἐπηρώτησεν (He asked) τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) αὐτοῦ (of him), “Πόσος (How long) χρόνος (a time) ἐστὶν (is it) ὡς (that) τοῦτο (this) γέγονεν (has been) αὐτῷ (with him)?” Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (he said), “Ἐκ (From) παιδιόθεν (childhood).

² καὶ (and) γυναῖκές (women) τινες (certain) αἳ (who) ἦσαν (had been) τεθεραπευμέναι (cured) ἀπὸ (from) πνευμάτων (spirits) πονηρῶν (evil) καὶ (and) ἀσθενειῶν (infirmities): Μαρία (Mary) ἡ (who) καλουμένη (is called) Μαγδαληνή (Magdalene), ἀφ’ (from) ἧς (whom) δαιμόνια (demons) ἑπτὰ (seven) ἐξεληλύθει (had gone out);

²⁷ ἐξελθόντι (Having gone forth) δὲ (then) αὐτῷ (He) ἐπὶ (upon) τὴν (the) γῆν (land), ὑπήντησεν (met Him) ἀνήρ (a man) τις (certain) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) πόλεως (city), ἔχων (having) δαιμόνια (demons), καὶ (and) χρόνῳ (time) ἱκανῷ (a long) οὐκ (not) ἐνεδύσατο (was wearing) ἱμάτιον (clothing), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) οἰκίᾳ (a house) οὐκ (not) ἔμενεν (did abide), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) μνήμασιν (tombs).

⁴³ καὶ (And) γυνὴ (a woman) οὖσα (being) ἐν (with) ῥύσει (a flux) αἵματος (of blood) ἀπὸ (for) ἐτῶν (years) δώδεκα (twelve), ἥτις (who) ‹ἰατροῖς (on physicians) προσαναλώσασα (having spent) ὅλον (all) τὸν (her) βίον› (living), οὐκ (neither) ἴσχυσεν (was able) ἀπ’ (by) οὐδενὸς (no one) θεραπευθῆναι (to be healed),

¹⁶ ταύτην (This) δὲ (now), θυγατέρα (a daughter) Ἀβραὰμ (of Abraham) οὖσαν (being), ἣν (whom) ἔδησεν (has bound) ὁ (-) Σατανᾶς (Satan), ἰδοὺ (behold), δέκα (ten) καὶ (and) ὀκτὼ (eight) ἔτη (years), οὐκ (not) ἔδει (ought she) λυθῆναι (to be loosed) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) δεσμοῦ (bond) τούτου (this) τῇ (on the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τοῦ (of the) σαββάτου (Sabbath)?”

⁵ Ἦν (Was) δέ (now) τις (a certain) ἄνθρωπος (man) ἐκεῖ (there), τριάκοντα (thirty) καὶ (and) ὀκτὼ (eight) ἔτη (years) ἔχων (being) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) ἀσθενείᾳ (infirmity) αὐτοῦ (himself). ⁶ τοῦτον (Him) ἰδὼν (having seen) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) κατακείμενον (lying), καὶ (and) γνοὺς (having known) ὅτι (that) πολὺν (a long) ἤδη (already) χρόνον (time) ἔχει (he has been), λέγει (He says) αὐτῷ (to him), “Θέλεις (Desire you) ὑγιὴς (well) γενέσθαι (to become)?”

¹⁹ καὶ (And) ἠρώτησαν (they asked) αὐτοὺς (them) λέγοντες (saying), “Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) υἱὸς (son) ὑμῶν (of you), ὃν (of whom) ὑμεῖς (you) λέγετε (say) ὅτι (that) τυφλὸς (blind) ἐγεννήθη (he was born)? πῶς (How) οὖν (then) βλέπει (does he see) ἄρτι (presently)?” ²⁰ Ἀπεκρίθησαν (Answered) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) γονεῖς (parents) αὐτοῦ (of him) καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said), “Οἴδαμεν (We know) ὅτι (that) οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) υἱὸς (son) ἡμῶν (of us), καὶ (and) ὅτι (that) τυφλὸς (blind) ἐγεννήθη (he was born). ²¹ πῶς (How) δὲ (however) νῦν (presently) βλέπει (he sees), οὐκ (not) οἴδαμεν (we know), ἢ (or) τίς (who) ἤνοιξεν (opened) αὐτοῦ (of him) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes), ἡμεῖς (we) οὐκ (not) οἴδαμεν (know); αὐτὸν (him) ἐρωτήσατε (ask); ἡλικίαν (age) ἔχει (has) αὐτὸς (He). περὶ (Concerning) ἑαυτοῦ (himself), λαλήσει (he will speak).”

² καί (And) τις (a certain) ἀνὴρ (man), χωλὸς (lame) ἐκ (from) κοιλίας (womb) μητρὸς (of mother) αὐτοῦ (of him) ὑπάρχων (being), ἐβαστάζετο (was being carried), ὃν (whom) ἐτίθουν (they placed) καθ’ (every) ἡμέραν (day) πρὸς (at) τὴν (the) θύραν (gate) τοῦ (of the) ἱεροῦ (temple) τὴν (-) λεγομένην (called) Ὡραίαν (Beautiful) τοῦ (-) αἰτεῖν (to ask for) ἐλεημοσύνην (alms) παρὰ (from) τῶν (those who) εἰσπορευομένων (were going) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ἱερόν (temple),

²² ἐτῶν (years old) γὰρ (for) ἦν (was) πλειόνων (more than) τεσσεράκοντα (forty), ὁ (the) ἄνθρωπος (man) ἐφ’ (on) ὃν (whom) γεγόνει (had taken place) τὸ (the) σημεῖον (sign) τοῦτο (this) τῆς (of) ἰάσεως (healing).

⁸ Καί (And) τις (a certain) ἀνὴρ (man) ἀδύνατος (crippled), ἐν (in) Λύστροις (Lystra), τοῖς (in the) ποσὶν (feet), ἐκάθητο (was sitting), χωλὸς (lame) ἐκ (from) κοιλίας (the womb) μητρὸς (of the mother) αὐτοῦ (of him), ὃς (who) οὐδέποτε (never) περιεπάτησεν (had walked). ⁹ οὗτος (This man) ἤκουσεν* (heard) τοῦ (-) Παύλου (Paul) λαλοῦντος (speaking), ὃς (who), ἀτενίσας (having looked intently) αὐτῷ (at him) καὶ (and) ἰδὼν (having seen) ὅτι (that) ἔχει (he has) πίστιν (faith) τοῦ (-) σωθῆναι (to be healed), ¹⁰ εἶπεν (said) μεγάλῃ (in a loud) φωνῇ (voice), “Ἀνάστηθι (Stand) ἐπὶ (on) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) σου (of you) ὀρθός (upright)!” καὶ (And) ἥλατο (he sprang up) καὶ (and) περιεπάτει (began to walk).

¹⁶ Ὀψίας (Evening) δὲ (now) γενομένης (having come), προσήνεγκαν (they brought) αὐτῷ (to Him) δαιμονιζομένους (being possessed with demons) πολλούς (many), καὶ (and) ἐξέβαλεν (He cast out) τὰ (the) πνεύματα (spirits) λόγῳ (by a word), καὶ (and) πάντας (all) τοὺς (those) κακῶς (sick) ἔχοντας (being), ἐθεράπευσεν (He healed),

⁸ Αὐτὸς (He) δὲ (now) ᾔδει (knew) τοὺς (the) διαλογισμοὺς (thoughts) αὐτῶν (of them); εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (now) τῷ (to the) ἀνδρὶ (man) τῷ (the) ξηρὰν (withered) ἔχοντι (having) τὴν (the) χεῖρα (hand), “Ἔγειρε (Arise) καὶ (and) στῆθι (stand) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) μέσον (midst).” καὶ (And) ἀναστὰς (having risen up), ἔστη (he stood). ⁹ εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Ἐπερωτῶ (I ask) ὑμᾶς (you), εἰ (whether) ἔξεστιν (it is lawful) τῷ (on the) σαββάτῳ (Sabbath) ἀγαθοποιῆσαι (to do good) ἢ (or) κακοποιῆσαι (to do evil)? ψυχὴν (Life) σῶσαι (to save) ἢ (or) ἀπολέσαι (to destroy)?” ¹⁰ Καὶ (And) περιβλεψάμενος (having looked around) πάντας (all) αὐτοὺς (on them), εἶπεν (He said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἔκτεινον (Stretch out) τὴν (the) χεῖρά (hand) σου (of you).” ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἐποίησεν (he did), καὶ (and) ἀπεκατεστάθη (was restored) ἡ (the) χεὶρ (hand) αὐτοῦ (of him).

²³ καὶ (and) παρακαλεῖ (he begs) αὐτὸν (Him) πολλὰ (much), λέγων (saying) ὅτι (-), “Τὸ (The) θυγάτριόν (little daughter) μου (of me) ἐσχάτως (at the end) ἔχει (is holding), ἵνα (that), ἐλθὼν (having come), ἐπιθῇς (You would lay) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) αὐτῇ (on her), ἵνα (so that) σωθῇ (she might be cured), καὶ (and) ζήσῃ (she shall live).”

⁵ καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἐδύνατο (He was able) ἐκεῖ (there) ποιῆσαι (to do) οὐδεμίαν (not any) δύναμιν (work of power), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὀλίγοις (on a few) ἀρρώστοις (sick), ἐπιθεὶς (having laid) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands), ἐθεράπευσεν (He healed).

²⁵ Εἶτα (Then) πάλιν (again) ἐπέθηκεν (He laid) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) ἐπὶ (upon) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) διέβλεψεν (he opened his eyes) καὶ (and) ἀπεκατέστη (he was restored), καὶ (and) ἐνέβλεπεν (he began to see) τηλαυγῶς (clearly) ἅπαντα (everything).

¹⁸ [και (and) ἐν (with) ταῖς (their) χερσὶν] (hands) ὄφεις (serpents) ἀροῦσιν (they will take up); κἂν (and if) θανάσιμόν (deadly) τι (anything) πίωσιν (they drink), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) αὐτοὺς (them) βλάψῃ (shall it hurt); ἐπὶ (upon) ἀρρώστους (the sick), χεῖρας (hands) ἐπιθήσουσιν (they will lay), καὶ (and) καλῶς (well) ἕξουσιν (they will be).”

⁴⁰ Δύνοντος (At the setting) δὲ (now) τοῦ (of the) ἡλίου (sun), ἅπαντες (all) ὅσοι (as many as) εἶχον (had any) ἀσθενοῦντας (ailing) νόσοις (with diseases) ποικίλαις (various), ἤγαγον (brought) αὐτοὺς (them) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (Him), ὁ (-) δὲ (and) ἑνὶ (on one) ἑκάστῳ (each) αὐτῶν (of them), τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) ἐπιτιθεὶς (having laid), ἐθεράπευεν (He would heal) αὐτούς (them).

¹⁴ Καὶ (And) ἰδὼν (having seen them), εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Πορευθέντες (Having gone), ἐπιδείξατε (show) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) τοῖς (to the) ἱερεῦσιν (priests).” καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (it came to pass) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὑπάγειν (going) αὐτοὺς (them), ἐκαθαρίσθησαν (they were cleansed). ¹⁵ Εἷς (One) δὲ (then) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them), ἰδὼν (having seen) ὅτι (that) ἰάθη (he was healed), ὑπέστρεψεν (turned back), μετὰ (with) φωνῆς (a voice) μεγάλης (loud) δοξάζων (glorifying) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), ¹⁶ καὶ (and) ἔπεσεν (he fell) ἐπὶ (on) πρόσωπον (his face) παρὰ (at) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) αὐτοῦ (of Him), εὐχαριστῶν (giving thanks) αὐτῷ (to Him); καὶ (and) αὐτὸς (he) ἦν (was) Σαμαρίτης (a Samaritan). ¹⁷ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Having answered) δὲ (then), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said), “Οὐχὶ* (Not) οἱ (the) δέκα (ten) ἐκαθαρίσθησαν (were cleansed)? οἱ (-) δὲ (But) ἐννέα (the nine) ποῦ (are where)?

⁴³ καὶ (And) παραχρῆμα (immediately) ἀνέβλεψεν (he received sight) καὶ (and) ἠκολούθει (began following) αὐτῷ (Him), δοξάζων (glorifying) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God). καὶ (And) πᾶς (all) ὁ (the) λαὸς (people), ἰδὼν (having seen it), ἔδωκεν (gave) αἶνον (praise) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God).

¹⁷ Ἀπῆλθεν (Went away) δὲ (then) Ἁνανίας (Ananias) καὶ (and) εἰσῆλθεν (entered) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) οἰκίαν (house); καὶ (and) ἐπιθεὶς (having laid) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτὸν (him) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands), εἶπεν (he said), “Σαοὺλ (Saul) ἀδελφέ (Brother), ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) ἀπέσταλκέν (has sent) με (me), Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), ὁ (the One) ὀφθείς (having appeared) σοι (to you) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ὁδῷ (road) ᾗ (by which) ἤρχου (you were coming), ὅπως (that) ἀναβλέψῃς (you may see again) καὶ (and) πλησθῇς (be filled) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy).”

² οἱ (-) δὲ (And) Φαρισαῖοι (the Pharisees), ἰδόντες (having seen), εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ἰδοὺ (Behold), οἱ (the) μαθηταί (disciples) σου (of You) ποιοῦσιν (are doing) ὃ (what) οὐκ (not) ἔξεστιν (it is lawful) ποιεῖν (to do) ἐν (on) σαββάτῳ (Sabbath).”

¹⁰ καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), ἄνθρωπος (a man) χεῖρα (a hand) ἔχων (having) ξηράν (withered). καὶ (And) ἐπηρώτησαν (they asked) αὐτὸν (Him), λέγοντες (saying), “Εἰ (Is) ἔξεστιν (it lawful) τοῖς (on the) σάββασιν (Sabbaths) θεραπεῦσαι (to heal)?” — ἵνα (so that) κατηγορήσωσιν (they might accuse) αὐτοῦ (Him). ¹¹ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τίς (What) ἔσται (will there be) ἐξ (among) ὑμῶν (you) ἄνθρωπος (man), ὃς (who) ἕξει (will have) πρόβατον (sheep) ἕν (one), καὶ (and) ἐὰν (if) ἐμπέσῃ (falls) τοῦτο (it) τοῖς (on the) σάββασιν (Sabbaths) εἰς (into) βόθυνον (a pit), οὐχὶ (not) κρατήσει (will he take hold of) αὐτὸ (it) καὶ (and) ἐγερεῖ (will raise it up)? ¹² πόσῳ (How much) οὖν (therefore) διαφέρει (is more valuable) ἄνθρωπος (a man) προβάτου (than a sheep)! ὥστε (Therefore) ἔξεστιν (it is lawful) τοῖς (on the) σάββασιν (Sabbaths) καλῶς (good) ποιεῖν (to do).”

² καὶ (and) παρετήρουν (they were watching) αὐτὸν (Him), εἰ (whether) τοῖς (on the) σάββασιν (Sabbaths) θεραπεύσει (He will heal) αὐτόν (him), ἵνα (in order that) κατηγορήσωσιν (they might accuse) αὐτοῦ (Him). ³ Καὶ (And) λέγει (He says) τῷ (to the) ἀνθρώπῳ (man) τῷ (-) τὴν (the) «χεῖρα (hand) ἔχοντι» (having) ξηράν (withered), “Ἔγειρε (Arise) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) μέσον (midst).” ⁴ καὶ (And) λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἔξεστιν (Is it lawful) τοῖς (on the) σάββασιν (Sabbaths) ἀγαθὸν¦ποιῆσαι (to do good), ἢ (or) κακοποιῆσαι (to do evil)? ψυχὴν (Life) σῶσαι (to save), ἢ (or) ἀποκτεῖναι (to kill)?” Οἱ (-) δὲ (But) ἐσιώπων (they were silent). ⁵ Καὶ (And) περιβλεψάμενος (having looked around on) αὐτοὺς (them) μετ’ (with) ὀργῆς (anger), συλλυπούμενος* (being grieved) ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (the) πωρώσει (hardness) τῆς (of the) καρδίας (heart) αὐτῶν (of them), λέγει (He says) τῷ (to the) ἀνθρώπῳ (man), “Ἔκτεινον (Stretch out) τὴν (the) χεῖρα (hand) (σου) (of you).” καὶ (And) ἐξέτεινεν (he stretched it out), καὶ (and) ἀπεκατεστάθη (was restored) ἡ (the) χεὶρ (hand) αὐτοῦ (of him). ⁶ Καὶ (And) ἐξελθόντες (having gone out), οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) εὐθὺς (immediately) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) Ἡρῳδιανῶν (Herodians) συμβούλιον (counsel) ἐδίδουν (began to take) κατ’ (against) αὐτοῦ (Him), ὅπως (how) αὐτὸν (Him) ἀπολέσωσιν (they might destroy).

²² καὶ (And) ἔρχεται (comes) εἷς (one) τῶν (of the) ἀρχισυναγώγων (synagogue rulers), ὀνόματι (named) Ἰάϊρος (Jairus), καὶ (and) ἰδὼν (having seen) αὐτὸν (Him), πίπτει (falls) πρὸς (at) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) αὐτοῦ (of Him)

⁷ παρετηροῦντο (Were closely watching) δὲ (now) αὐτὸν (Him) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), εἰ (whether) ἐν (on) τῷ (the) σαββάτῳ (Sabbath) θεραπεύει (He will heal), ἵνα (that) εὕρωσιν (they might find reason) κατηγορεῖν (to accuse) αὐτοῦ (Him).

¹¹ αὐτοὶ (They themselves) δὲ (then) ἐπλήσθησαν (were filled) ἀνοίας (with rage), καὶ (and) διελάλουν (were discussing) πρὸς (with) ἀλλήλους (one another) τί (what) ἂν (-) ποιήσαιεν (they might do) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (to Jesus).

⁴¹ καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), ἦλθεν (came) ἀνὴρ (a man) ᾧ (whose) ὄνομα (name was) Ἰάϊρος (Jairus), καὶ (and) οὗτος (he) ἄρχων (a ruler) τῆς (of the) συναγωγῆς (synagogue) ὑπῆρχεν (was), καὶ (and) πεσὼν (having fallen) παρὰ (at) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) ‹τοῦ› (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus), παρεκάλει (he began begging) αὐτὸν (Him) εἰσελθεῖν (to come) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) αὐτοῦ (of him),

³ καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (spoke) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) νομικοὺς (lawyers) καὶ (and) Φαρισαίους (to the Pharisees), λέγων (saying), “Ἔξεστιν (Is it lawful) τῷ (on the) σαββάτῳ (Sabbath) θεραπεῦσαι (to heal) ἢ (or) οὔ (not)?” ⁴ Οἱ (-) δὲ (But) ἡσύχασαν (they were silent). Καὶ (And) ἐπιλαβόμενος (having taken hold of him), ἰάσατο (He healed) αὐτὸν (him) καὶ (and) ἀπέλυσεν (let him go). ⁵ καὶ (And) πρὸς (to) αὐτοὺς (them) εἶπεν (He said), “Τίνος (Which) ὑμῶν (of you) υἱὸς (a son) ἢ (or) βοῦς (an ox) εἰς (into) φρέαρ (a pit) πεσεῖται (will fall), καὶ (also) οὐκ (not) εὐθέως (immediately) ἀνασπάσει (he will pull up) αὐτὸν (him) ἐν (on) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τοῦ (the) σαββάτου (Sabbath)?” ⁶ Καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἴσχυσαν (they were able) ἀνταποκριθῆναι (to reply) πρὸς (to) ταῦτα (these things).

¹⁵ ἀπῆλθεν (Went away) ὁ (the) ἄνθρωπος (man) καὶ (and) ἀνήγγειλεν* (told) τοῖς (the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews) ὅτι (that) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐστιν (it is) ὁ (the One) ποιήσας (having made) αὐτὸν (him) ὑγιῆ (well). ¹⁶ Καὶ (And) διὰ (because of) τοῦτο (this), ἐδίωκον (were persecuting) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), ὅτι (because) ταῦτα (these things) ἐποίει (He was doing) ἐν (on) σαββάτῳ (the Sabbath).

¹⁴ ἦν (Was) δὲ (now) σάββατον (Sabbath) ἐν (in) ᾗ (which) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τὸν (the) πηλὸν (clay) ἐποίησεν (had made) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) ἀνέῳξεν (opened) αὐτοῦ (of him) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμούς (eyes). ¹⁵ πάλιν (Again) οὖν (therefore) ἠρώτων (were asking) αὐτὸν (him) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) πῶς (how) ἀνέβλεψεν (he had received sight). Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (he said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Πηλὸν (Clay) ἐπέθηκέν (He put) μου (of me) ἐπὶ (on) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμούς (eyes), καὶ (and) ἐνιψάμην (I washed), καὶ (and) βλέπω (I see).” ¹⁶ Ἔλεγον (Were saying) οὖν (therefore) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees) τινές (some), “Οὐκ (Not) ἔστιν (is) οὗτος (this) παρὰ (from) Θεοῦ (God) ὁ (the) ἄνθρωπος (man), ὅτι (for) τὸ (the) σάββατον (Sabbath) οὐ (not) τηρεῖ (He does keep).” Ἄλλοι (Others) [δὲ] (however) ἔλεγον (were saying), “Πῶς (How) δύναται (is able) ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἁμαρτωλὸς (sinful) τοιαῦτα (such) σημεῖα (signs) ποιεῖν (to do)?” Καὶ (And) σχίσμα (division) ἦν (there was) ἐν (among) αὐτοῖς (them).

¹⁵ μετὰ (After) δὲ (then) τὴν (the) ἀνάγνωσιν (reading) τοῦ (of the) νόμου (law) καὶ (and) τῶν (of the) προφητῶν (Prophets), ἀπέστειλαν (sent) οἱ (the) ἀρχισυνάγωγοι (rulers of the synagogue) πρὸς (to) αὐτοὺς (them), λέγοντες (saying), “Ἄνδρες (Men), ἀδελφοί (brothers), εἴ (if) τίς (any) ἐστιν (there is) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) λόγος (a word) παρακλήσεως (of exhortation) πρὸς (toward) τὸν (the) λαόν (people), λέγετε (speak).”

⁸ Κρίσπος (Crispus) δὲ (now), ὁ (the) ἀρχισυνάγωγος (ruler of the synagogue), ἐπίστευσεν (believed) τῷ (in the) Κυρίῳ (Lord), σὺν (with) ὅλῳ (all) τῷ (the) οἴκῳ (household) αὐτοῦ (of him). καὶ (And) πολλοὶ (many) τῶν (of the) Κορινθίων (Corinthians) ἀκούοντες (hearing), ἐπίστευον (believed) καὶ (and) ἐβαπτίζοντο (were baptized).

¹⁷ Ἐπιλαβόμενοι (Having seized) δὲ (then) πάντες (all of them) Σωσθένην (Sosthenes), τὸν (the) ἀρχισυνάγωγον (ruler of the synagogue), ἔτυπτον (they began to beat him) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τοῦ (the) βήματος (judgment seat). καὶ (And) οὐδὲν (nothing) τούτων (about these things) τῷ (-) Γαλλίωνι (to Gallio) ἔμελεν (it mattered).

² μαρτυρῶ (I bear witness) γὰρ (for) αὐτοῖς (about them), ὅτι (that) ζῆλον (zeal) Θεοῦ (for God) ἔχουσιν (they have), ἀλλ’ (but) οὐ (not) κατ’ (according to) ἐπίγνωσιν (knowledge).

⁵ ὑποκριτά (Hypocrite)! ἔκβαλε (Cast out) πρῶτον (first) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) ὀφθαλμοῦ (eye) σοῦ (of you) τὴν (the) δοκόν (beam), καὶ (and) τότε (then) διαβλέψεις (you will see clearly) ἐκβαλεῖν (to cast out) τὸ (the) κάρφος (splinter) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) ὀφθαλμοῦ (eye) τοῦ (of the) ἀδελφοῦ (brother) σου (of you).

⁷ ὑποκριταί (Hypocrites)! καλῶς (Rightly) ἐπροφήτευσεν (prophesied) περὶ (concerning) ὑμῶν (you) Ἠσαΐας (Isaiah), λέγων (saying),

¹⁴ ἄφετε (Leave) αὐτούς (them)! τυφλοί (Blind) εἰσιν (they are) ὁδηγοί (guides) τυφλῶν (of the blind). τυφλὸς (Blind) δὲ (now) τυφλὸν (blind) ἐὰν (if) ὁδηγῇ (they lead), ἀμφότεροι (both) εἰς (into) βόθυνον (a pit) πεσοῦνται (will fall).”

¹³ Οὐαὶ (Woe) δὲ (however) ὑμῖν (to you), γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), ὑποκριταί (hypocrites)! ὅτι (For) κλείετε (you shut up) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (men); ὑμεῖς (You) γὰρ (for) οὐκ (neither) εἰσέρχεσθε (enter), οὐδὲ (nor even) τοὺς (those who) εἰσερχομένους (are entering) ἀφίετε (do you allow) εἰσελθεῖν (to go in).

²⁸ οὕτως (Thus) καὶ (also), ὑμεῖς (you) ἔξωθεν (outwardly) μὲν (indeed) φαίνεσθε (appear) τοῖς (-) ἀνθρώποις (to men) δίκαιοι (righteous), ἔσωθεν (inwardly) δέ (however) ἐστε (you are) μεστοὶ (full) ὑποκρίσεως (of hypocrisy) καὶ (and) ἀνομίας (lawlessness).

⁴² πῶς (How) δύνασαι (are you able) λέγειν (to say) τῷ (to) ἀδελφῷ (brother) σου (of you), ‘Ἀδελφέ (Brother), ἄφες (let that) ἐκβάλω (I might cast out) τὸ (the) κάρφος (splinter) τὸ (that is) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀφθαλμῷ (eye) σου (of you),’ αὐτὸς (yourself) τὴν (the) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀφθαλμῷ (eye) σοῦ (of you) δοκὸν (beam) οὐ (not) βλέπων (seeing)? ὑποκριτά (Hypocrite), ἔκβαλε (cast out) πρῶτον (first) τὴν (the) δοκὸν (beam) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) ὀφθαλμοῦ (eye) σοῦ (of you), καὶ (and) τότε (then) διαβλέψεις (you will see clearly) τὸ (the) κάρφος (splinter) τὸ (-) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀφθαλμῷ (eye) τοῦ (of the) ἀδελφοῦ (brother) σου (of you) ἐκβαλεῖν (to cast out).

¹ Ἐν (In) οἷς (these times), ἐπισυναχθεισῶν (having been gathered together) τῶν (the) μυριάδων (myriads) τοῦ (of the) ὄχλου (crowd) ὥστε (so as) καταπατεῖν (to trample upon) ἀλλήλους (one another), ἤρξατο (He began) λέγειν (to say) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) πρῶτον (first), “Προσέχετε (Take heed) ἑαυτοῖς (to yourselves) ἀπὸ (of) τῆς (the) ζύμης (leaven), ἥτις (which) ἐστὶν (is) ὑπόκρισις (hypocrisy), τῶν (of the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees).

⁵ καὶ (And) πρὸς (to) αὐτοὺς (them) εἶπεν (He said), “Τίνος (Which) ὑμῶν (of you) υἱὸς (a son) ἢ (or) βοῦς (an ox) εἰς (into) φρέαρ (a pit) πεσεῖται (will fall), καὶ (also) οὐκ (not) εὐθέως (immediately) ἀνασπάσει (he will pull up) αὐτὸν (him) ἐν (on) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τοῦ (the) σαββάτου (Sabbath)?”

²¹ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἓν (One) ἔργον (work) ἐποίησα (I did), καὶ (and) πάντες (all) θαυμάζετε (you marvel). ²² διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (the fact that) Μωϋσῆς (Moses) δέδωκεν (has given) ὑμῖν (you) τὴν (-) περιτομήν (circumcision)— οὐχ (not) ὅτι (that) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Μωϋσέως (Moses) ἐστὶν (it is), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) πατέρων (fathers)— καὶ (also) ἐν (on) σαββάτῳ (Sabbath) περιτέμνετε (you circumcise) ἄνθρωπον (a man). ²³ εἰ (If) περιτομὴν (circumcision) λαμβάνει (receives) ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἐν (on) σαββάτῳ (Sabbath) ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) λυθῇ (might be broken) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) Μωϋσέως (of Moses), ἐμοὶ (with Me) χολᾶτε (are you angry) ὅτι (because) ὅλον (entirely) ἄνθρωπον (a man) ὑγιῆ (sound) ἐποίησα (I made) ἐν (on) σαββάτῳ (the Sabbath)? ²⁴ μὴ (Not) κρίνετε (judge) κατ’ (according to) ὄψιν (appearance), ἀλλὰ (but) τὴν (the) δικαίαν (righteous) κρίσιν (judgment) κρίνετε* (judge).”

²⁰ Πέτρος (Peter) δὲ (however) εἶπεν (said) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (him), “Τὸ (The) ἀργύριόν (silver) σου (of you), σὺν (with) σοὶ (you) εἴη (may it be) εἰς (to) ἀπώλειαν (destruction), ὅτι (because) τὴν (the) δωρεὰν (gift) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐνόμισας (you thought) διὰ (by) χρημάτων (money) κτᾶσθαι (to be obtained)! ²¹ οὐκ (No) ἔστιν (there is) σοι (to you) μερὶς (part), οὐδὲ (nor) κλῆρος (lot), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) λόγῳ (matter) τούτῳ (this); ἡ (the) γὰρ (for) καρδία (heart) σου (of you) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) εὐθεῖα (right) ἔναντι (before) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God). ²² μετανόησον (Repent) οὖν (therefore) ἀπὸ (of) τῆς (the) κακίας (wickedness) σου (of yours) ταύτης (this), καὶ (and) δεήθητι (pray earnestly to) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord), εἰ (if) ἄρα (indeed) ἀφεθήσεταί (will be forgiven) σοι (you) ἡ (the) ἐπίνοια (intent) τῆς (of the) καρδίας (heart) σου (of you); ²³ εἰς (in) γὰρ (for) χολὴν (the gall) πικρίας (of bitterness) καὶ (and) σύνδεσμον (the bond) ἀδικίας (of iniquity), ὁρῶ (I see) σε (you) ὄντα (being).”

⁹ Σαῦλος (Saul) δέ (then), ὁ (-) καὶ (also called) Παῦλος (Paul), πλησθεὶς (having been filled) Πνεύματος (the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy), ἀτενίσας (having looked intently) εἰς (upon) αὐτὸν (him), ¹⁰ εἶπεν (said), “Ὦ (O) πλήρης (full) παντὸς (of all) δόλου (deceit) καὶ (and) πάσης (all) ῥᾳδιουργίας (craft), υἱὲ (son) διαβόλου (of the devil), ἐχθρὲ (enemy) πάσης (of all) δικαιοσύνης (righteousness), οὐ (not) παύσῃ (will you cease) διαστρέφων (perverting) τὰς (the) ὁδοὺς (ways) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (of Lord) τὰς (-) εὐθείας (straight)?

¹⁰ Τότε (Then) λέγει (says) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ὕπαγε (Get you away), Σατανᾶ (Satan); γέγραπται (it has been written) γάρ (for): ‘Κύριον (The Lord) τὸν (the) θεόν (God) σου (of you), προσκυνήσεις (you shall worship), καὶ (and) αὐτῷ (Him) μόνῳ (alone) λατρεύσεις (shall you serve).’”

²⁷ Καὶ (And) ἔλεγεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τὸ (The) σάββατον (Sabbath) διὰ (on account of) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man) ἐγένετο (was made), καὶ (and) οὐχ (not) ὁ (the) ἄνθρωπος (man) διὰ (on account of) τὸ (the) σάββατον (Sabbath).

⁸ ποιήσατε (Produce) οὖν (therefore) καρποὺς (fruits) ἀξίους (worthy) τῆς (-) μετανοίας (of repentance); καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ἄρξησθε (begin) λέγειν (to say) ἐν (in) ἑαυτοῖς (yourselves), ‘Πατέρα (As father) ἔχομεν (We have) τὸν (-) Ἀβραάμ (Abraham).’ λέγω (I say) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅτι (that) δύναται (is able) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐκ (from) τῶν (-) λίθων (stones) τούτων (these) ἐγεῖραι (to raise up) τέκνα (children) τῷ (-) Ἀβραάμ (to Abraham).

¹¹ καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), γυνὴ (a woman) πνεῦμα (a spirit) ἔχουσα (having) ἀσθενείας (of infirmity), ἔτη (years) δέκα‿ (ten and) οκτώ (eight). καὶ (And) ἦν (she was) συνκύπτουσα (bent over) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) δυναμένη (able) ἀνακύψαι (to lift up herself) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) παντελές (full). ¹² ἰδὼν (Having seen) δὲ (then) αὐτὴν (her), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) προσεφώνησεν (called her near) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῇ (to her), “Γύναι (Woman), ἀπολέλυσαι (you have been freed from) τῆς (the) ἀσθενείας (sickness) σου (of you).”

²⁴ Καὶ (And) αὐτὸς (he) φωνήσας (having cried out) εἶπεν (said), ‘Πάτερ (Father) Ἀβραάμ (Abraham), ἐλέησόν (have mercy on) με (me) καὶ (and) πέμψον (send) Λάζαρον (Lazarus), ἵνα (that) βάψῃ (he might dip) τὸ (the) ἄκρον (tip) τοῦ (of the) δακτύλου (finger) αὐτοῦ (of him) ὕδατος (in water) καὶ (and) καταψύξῃ (cool) τὴν (the) γλῶσσάν (tongue) μου (of me); ὅτι (for) ὀδυνῶμαι (I am suffering) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) φλογὶ (flame) ταύτῃ (this).’

⁹ Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ὅτι (-), “Σήμερον (Today) σωτηρία (salvation) τῷ (to the) οἴκῳ (house) τούτῳ (this) ἐγένετο (has come), καθότι (because) καὶ (also) αὐτὸς (he) υἱὸς (a son) Ἀβραάμ (of Abraham) ἐστιν (is).

⁴⁴ ὑμεῖς (You) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) πατρὸς (father) τοῦ (the) διαβόλου (devil) ἐστὲ (are), καὶ (and) τὰς (the) ἐπιθυμίας (desires) τοῦ (of) πατρὸς (father) ὑμῶν (of you), θέλετε (you desire) ποιεῖν (to do). ἐκεῖνος (He) ἀνθρωποκτόνος (a murderer) ἦν (was) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀληθείᾳ (truth) οὐκ (not) ἔστηκεν (has stood), ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (there is) ἀλήθεια (truth) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him). ὅταν (Whenever) λαλῇ (he might speak) τὸ (-) ψεῦδος (falsehood), ἐκ (from) τῶν (the) ἰδίων (own) λαλεῖ (he speaks); ὅτι (for) ψεύστης (a liar) ἐστὶν (he is), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) πατὴρ (father) αὐτοῦ (of it).

²⁶ Ἄνδρες (Men), ἀδελφοί (brothers), υἱοὶ (sons) γένους (of the family) Ἀβραὰμ (of Abraham), καὶ (and) οἱ (those) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) φοβούμενοι (fearing) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), ἡμῖν (to us) ὁ (the) λόγος (message) τῆς (of the) σωτηρίας (salvation) ταύτης (this) ἐξαπεστάλη (has been sent).

¹² καὶ (and) πατέρα (father) περιτομῆς (of circumcision) τοῖς (to those) οὐκ (not) ἐκ (of) περιτομῆς (circumcision) μόνον (only), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) τοῖς (to those) στοιχοῦσιν (walking) τοῖς (in the) ἴχνεσιν (steps) τῆς (of the) ἐν (during) ἀκροβυστίᾳ (uncircumcision) πίστεως (faith) τοῦ (of the) πατρὸς (father) ἡμῶν (of us), Ἀβραάμ (Abraham). ¹³ Οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) διὰ (through) νόμου (the Law) ἡ (the) ἐπαγγελία (promise was) τῷ (-) Ἀβραὰμ (to Abraham) ἢ (or) τῷ (the) σπέρματι (descendants) αὐτοῦ (of him) τὸ (that) κληρονόμον (heir) αὐτὸν (he) εἶναι (should be) κόσμου (of the world), ἀλλὰ (but) διὰ (through) δικαιοσύνης (the righteousness) πίστεως (of faith). ¹⁴ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) οἱ (those) ἐκ (of) νόμου (the Law are) κληρονόμοι (heirs), κεκένωται (has been made void) ἡ (-) πίστις (faith), καὶ (and) κατήργηται (made of no effect) ἡ (the) ἐπαγγελία (promise). ¹⁵ ὁ (-) γὰρ (For) νόμος (law) ὀργὴν (wrath) κατεργάζεται (brings); οὗ (where) δὲ (now) οὐκ (no) ἔστιν (there is) νόμος (law), οὐδὲ (neither is) παράβασις (transgression). ¹⁶ Διὰ (Therefore) τοῦτο (it is) ἐκ (of) πίστεως (faith), ἵνα (that it may be) κατὰ (according to) χάριν (grace), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) εἶναι (to be) βεβαίαν (sure) τὴν (the) ἐπαγγελίαν (promise) παντὶ (to all) τῷ (the) σπέρματι (seed), οὐ (not) τῷ (to that) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law) μόνον (only), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) τῷ (to that) ἐκ (of the) πίστεως (faith) Ἀβραάμ (of Abraham), ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) πατὴρ (the father) πάντων (of all) ἡμῶν (of us) —

²⁶ καὶ (and) ἀνανήψωσιν (they might come to their senses) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) τοῦ (of the) διαβόλου (devil) παγίδος (snare), ἐζωγρημένοι (having been captured) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (him) εἰς (for) τὸ (-) ἐκείνου (his) θέλημα (will).

⁶ Καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἴσχυσαν (they were able) ἀνταποκριθῆναι (to reply) πρὸς (to) ταῦτα (these things).

³⁷ ἐγγίζοντος (Drawing near) δὲ (then) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἤδη (already) πρὸς (at) τῇ (the) καταβάσει (descent) τοῦ (of the) ὄρους (Mount) τῶν (-) Ἐλαιῶν (of Olives), ἤρξαντο (began) ἅπαν (all) τὸ (the) πλῆθος (multitude) τῶν (of the) μαθητῶν (disciples), χαίροντες (rejoicing), αἰνεῖν (to praise) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) φωνῇ (in a voice) μεγάλῃ (loud) περὶ (for) πασῶν (all) ὧν (which) εἶδον (they had seen) δυνάμεων (the mighty works), ³⁸ λέγοντες (saying): “Εὐλογημένος (Blessed is) ὁ (the) ἐρχόμενος (coming) ὁ (-) Βασιλεὺς (King) ἐν (in) ὀνόματι (the name) Κυρίου (of the Lord).” “Ἐν (In) οὐρανῷ (heaven) εἰρήνη (peace), καὶ (and) δόξα (glory) ἐν (in) ὑψίστοις (the highest).” ³⁹ Καί (And) τινες (some) τῶν (of the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) ὄχλου (crowd) εἶπαν (said) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (Him), “Διδάσκαλε (Teacher), ἐπιτίμησον (rebuke) τοῖς (the) μαθηταῖς (disciples) σου (of You).” ⁴⁰ Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), εἶπεν (He said), “Λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ‹ὅτι› (that) ἐὰν (if) οὗτοι (these) σιωπήσουσιν (will be silent), οἱ (the) λίθοι (stones) κράξουσιν (will cry out).”

⁴⁸ καὶ (And) οὐχ (not) εὕρισκον (they found) τὸ (-) τί (what) ποιήσωσιν (they might do); ὁ (the) λαὸς (people) γὰρ (for) ἅπας (all) ἐξεκρέματο* (were hanging on) αὐτοῦ (His words), ἀκούων (listening).

⁴⁰ οὐκέτι (No longer) γὰρ (then) ἐτόλμων (did they dare) ἐπερωτᾶν (to ask) αὐτὸν (Him) οὐδέν (anything).

¹⁷ Ἐμαρτύρει (Continued to bear witness) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (the) ὄχλος (crowd) ὁ (-) ὢν (being) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him) ὅτε (when) τὸν (-) Λάζαρον (Lazarus) ἐφώνησεν (He called) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) μνημείου (tomb) καὶ (and) ἤγειρεν (raised) αὐτὸν (him) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead). ¹⁸ διὰ (On account of) τοῦτο (this) καὶ (also) ὑπήντησεν (met) αὐτῷ (Him) ὁ (the) ὄχλος (crowd), ὅτι (because) ἤκουσαν (they heard) τοῦτο (this) αὐτὸν (of His) πεποιηκέναι (having done) τὸ (the) σημεῖον (sign).

⁹ Καὶ (And) εἶδεν (saw) πᾶς (all) ὁ (the) λαὸς (people) αὐτὸν (him) περιπατοῦντα (walking) καὶ (and) αἰνοῦντα (praising) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God). ¹⁰ ἐπεγίνωσκον (They recognized) δὲ (then) αὐτὸν (him), ὅτι (that) οὗτος (he) ἦν (was) ὁ (the one) πρὸς (for) τὴν (the) ἐλεημοσύνην (alms) καθήμενος (sitting) ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (the) Ὡραίᾳ (Beautiful) Πύλῃ (Gate) τοῦ (of the) ἱεροῦ (temple); καὶ (and) ἐπλήσθησαν (they were filled) θάμβους (with wonder) καὶ (and) ἐκστάσεως (amazement) ἐπὶ (at) τῷ (that) συμβεβηκότι (having happened) αὐτῷ (to him). ¹¹ Κρατοῦντος (Is clinging) δὲ (now) αὐτοῦ (he) τὸν (to) Πέτρον (Peter) καὶ (and) τὸν (-) Ἰωάννην (John); συνέδραμεν (ran together) πᾶς (all) ὁ (the) λαὸς (people) πρὸς (to) αὐτοὺς (them) ἐπὶ (in) τῇ (the) στοᾷ (porch) τῇ (-) καλουμένῃ (called) Σολομῶντος (Solomon’s), ἔκθαμβοι (greatly amazed).

²¹ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) προσαπειλησάμενοι (having further threatened them), ἀπέλυσαν (they let go) αὐτούς (them), μηδὲν (nothing) εὑρίσκοντες (finding) τὸ (the) πῶς (how) κολάσωνται (they might punish) αὐτούς (them), διὰ (on account of) τὸν (the) λαόν (people), ὅτι (because) πάντες (all) ἐδόξαζον (were glorifying) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) ἐπὶ (for) τῷ (that) γεγονότι (having happened);

⁹ ἀλλ’ (But) οὐ (not) προκόψουσιν (they will advance) ἐπὶ (further) πλεῖον (much), ἡ (-) γὰρ (for) ἄνοια (the folly) αὐτῶν (of them) ἔκδηλος (plain) ἔσται (will be) πᾶσιν (to all), ὡς (as) καὶ (also) ἡ (that) ἐκείνων (of those two) ἐγένετο (became).

¹⁶ συνείδησιν (a conscience) ἔχοντες (having) ἀγαθήν (good), ἵνα (so that) ἐν (in) ᾧ (this) καταλαλεῖσθε (they might speak against you), καταισχυνθῶσιν (they shall be ashamed) οἱ (those) ἐπηρεάζοντες (reviling) ὑμῶν (your) τὴν (-) ἀγαθὴν (good) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) ἀναστροφήν (manner of life).

²⁴ Ἄλλην (Another) παραβολὴν (parable) παρέθηκεν (put He before) αὐτοῖς (them), λέγων (saying), “Ὡμοιώθη (Has become like) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens), ἀνθρώπῳ (a man) σπείραντι (having sown) καλὸν (good) σπέρμα (seed) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀγρῷ (field) αὐτοῦ (of him).

³¹ Ἄλλην (Another) παραβολὴν (parable) παρέθηκεν (put He before) αὐτοῖς (them), λέγων (saying), “Ὁμοία (Like) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) κόκκῳ (to a grain) σινάπεως (of mustard), ὃν (which) λαβὼν (having taken), ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἔσπειρεν (sowed) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀγρῷ (field) αὐτοῦ (of him); ³² ὃ (which) μικρότερον (smallest) μέν (indeed) ἐστιν (is) πάντων (of all) τῶν (the) σπερμάτων (seeds); ὅταν (when) δὲ (however) αὐξηθῇ (it is grown), μεῖζον (greater) τῶν (than the) λαχάνων (garden plants) ἐστὶν (it is), καὶ (and) γίνεται (becomes) δένδρον (a tree), ὥστε (so that) ἐλθεῖν (come) τὰ (the) πετεινὰ (birds) τοῦ (of the) οὐρανοῦ (air) καὶ (and) κατασκηνοῦν* (perch) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) κλάδοις (branches) αὐτοῦ (of it).”

²⁶ Καὶ (And) ἔλεγεν (He was saying), “Οὕτως (Thus) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὡς (as) ἄνθρωπος (a man) βάλῃ (should cast) τὸν (the) σπόρον (seed) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth),

³⁰ Καὶ (And) ἔλεγεν (He was saying), “Πῶς (To what) ὁμοιώσωμεν (shall we liken) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God)? ἢ (Or) ἐν (in) τίνι (what) αὐτὴν (it) παραβολῇ (parable) θῶμεν (shall we present)? ³¹ ὡς (As) κόκκῳ (to a grain) σινάπεως (of mustard), ὃς (which), ὅταν (when) σπαρῇ (it has been sown) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), μικρότερον (smallest) ὂν (is) πάντων (of all) τῶν (the) σπερμάτων (seeds) τῶν (which are) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), ³² καὶ (and) ὅταν (when) σπαρῇ (it has been sown), ἀναβαίνει (it grows up) καὶ (and) γίνεται (becomes) μεῖζον (greater) πάντων (than all) τῶν (the) λαχάνων (garden plants), καὶ (and) ποιεῖ (it produces) κλάδους (branches) μεγάλους (great), ὥστε (so that) δύνασθαι (are able) ὑπὸ (under) τὴν (the) σκιὰν (shadow) αὐτοῦ (of it) τὰ (the) πετεινὰ (birds) τοῦ (of the) οὐρανοῦ (air) κατασκηνοῦν* (to perch).” ³³ Καὶ (And) τοιαύταις (with such) παραβολαῖς (parables) πολλαῖς (many), ἐλάλει (He kept speaking) αὐτοῖς (to them) τὸν (the) λόγον (word), καθὼς (as) ἠδύναντο (they were able) ἀκούειν (to hear). ³⁴ χωρὶς (Without) δὲ (then) παραβολῆς (parables), οὐκ (not) ἐλάλει (would He speak) αὐτοῖς (to them); κατ’ (in) ἰδίαν (private) δὲ (however), τοῖς (to His) ἰδίοις (own) μαθηταῖς (disciples) ἐπέλυεν (He would explain) πάντα (all things).

³¹ “Τίνι (To what) οὖν (therefore) ὁμοιώσω (will I liken) τοὺς (the) ἀνθρώπους (men) τῆς (of the) γενεᾶς (generation) ταύτης (this)? καὶ (And) τίνι (to what) εἰσὶν (are they) ὅμοιοι (like)?

²⁰ Καὶ (And) πάλιν (again) εἶπεν (He said), “Τίνι (To what) ὁμοιώσω (shall I liken) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God)?

²¹ οὐδὲ (nor) ἐροῦσιν (will they say), ‘Ἰδοὺ (Behold) ὧδε (here),’ ἤ (or) ‘Ἐκεῖ (There).’ ἰδοὺ (Behold) γὰρ (for), ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐντὸς (in the midst) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐστιν (is).”

²⁰ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) λέγει (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Διὰ (Because of) τὴν (the) ὀλιγοπιστίαν (little faith) ὑμῶν (of you). ἀμὴν (Truly) γὰρ (for) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐὰν (If) ἔχητε (you have) πίστιν (faith) ὡς (as) κόκκον (a seed) σινάπεως (of mustard), ἐρεῖτε (you will say) τῷ (to the) ὄρει (mountain) τούτῳ (to this), ‘Μετάβα (Move) ἔνθεν (from here) ἐκεῖ (to there),’ καὶ (and) μεταβήσεται (it will move). καὶ (And) οὐδὲν (nothing) ἀδυνατήσει (will be impossible) ὑμῖν (for you).”

³¹ ὡς (As) κόκκῳ (to a grain) σινάπεως (of mustard), ὃς (which), ὅταν (when) σπαρῇ (it has been sown) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), μικρότερον (smallest) ὂν (is) πάντων (of all) τῶν (the) σπερμάτων (seeds) τῶν (which are) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), ³² καὶ (and) ὅταν (when) σπαρῇ (it has been sown), ἀναβαίνει (it grows up) καὶ (and) γίνεται (becomes) μεῖζον (greater) πάντων (than all) τῶν (the) λαχάνων (garden plants), καὶ (and) ποιεῖ (it produces) κλάδους (branches) μεγάλους (great), ὥστε (so that) δύνασθαι (are able) ὑπὸ (under) τὴν (the) σκιὰν (shadow) αὐτοῦ (of it) τὰ (the) πετεινὰ (birds) τοῦ (of the) οὐρανοῦ (air) κατασκηνοῦν* (to perch).”

⁶ Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord), “Εἰ (If) ἔχετε (you have) πίστιν (faith) ὡς (like) κόκκον (a grain) σινάπεως (of mustard), ἐλέγετε (you would have said) ἂν (-) τῇ (to the) συκαμίνῳ (mulberry tree) ταύτῃ (this), ‘Ἐκριζώθητι (Be uprooted) καὶ (and) φυτεύθητι (be planted) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) θαλάσσῃ (sea),’ καὶ (and) ὑπήκουσεν (it would have obeyed) ἂν (-) ὑμῖν (you).

⁴¹ οἱ (Those) μὲν (indeed) οὖν (therefore) ἀποδεξάμενοι (having received) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἐβαπτίσθησαν (were baptized); καὶ (and) προσετέθησαν (were added) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ἐκείνῃ (that), ψυχαὶ (souls) ὡσεὶ (about) τρισχίλιαι (three thousand).

⁴ πολλοὶ (Many) δὲ (however) τῶν (of those) ἀκουσάντων (having heard) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) ἐπίστευσαν (believed), καὶ (and) ἐγενήθη (became) ‹ὁ› (the) ἀριθμὸς (number) τῶν (of the) ἀνδρῶν (men) ὡς (about) χιλιάδες (thousand) πέντε (five).

¹⁴ Συμεὼν (Simeon) ἐξηγήσατο (has related) καθὼς (how) πρῶτον (first) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐπεσκέψατο (visited), λαβεῖν (to take) ἐξ (out of) ἐθνῶν (the Gentiles) λαὸν (a people) τῷ (for the) ὀνόματι (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ¹⁵ καὶ (And) τούτῳ (with this) συμφωνοῦσιν (agree) οἱ (the) λόγοι (words) τῶν (of the) προφητῶν (prophets), καθὼς (as) γέγραπται (it is written): ¹⁶ ‘Μετὰ (After) ταῦτα (these things) ἀναστρέψω (I will return) καὶ (and) ἀνοικοδομήσω (will rebuild) τὴν (the) σκηνὴν (tabernacle) Δαυὶδ (of David) τὴν (which) πεπτωκυῖαν (has fallen), καὶ (and) τὰ (the) κατεσκαμμένα* (ruins) αὐτῆς (of it) ἀνοικοδομήσω (I will rebuild), καὶ (and) ἀνορθώσω (I will set upright) αὐτήν (it), ¹⁷ ὅπως (so that) ἂν (-) ἐκζητήσωσιν (may seek out) οἱ (the) κατάλοιποι (remnant) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord), καὶ (and) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles), ἐφ’ (upon) οὓς (whom) ἐπικέκληται (has been called) τὸ (the) ὄνομά (name) μου (of Me) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτούς (them), λέγει (says) Κύριος (the Lord), ποιῶν (doing) ταῦτα (these things), ¹⁸ γνωστὰ (known) ἀπ’ (from) αἰῶνος (eternity).’

²⁰ Οἱ (Those) δὲ (then) ἀκούσαντες (having heard) ἐδόξαζον (began glorifying) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God). εἶπόν* (They said) τε (then) αὐτῷ (to him), “Θεωρεῖς (You see), ἀδελφέ (brother), πόσαι (how many) μυριάδες (myriads) εἰσὶν (there are) ἐν (among) τοῖς (the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews) τῶν (-) πεπιστευκότων (having believed), καὶ (and) πάντες (all) ζηλωταὶ (zealous ones) τοῦ (for the) νόμου (law) ὑπάρχουσιν (are).

¹⁹ ἐν (in the) δυνάμει (power) σημείων (of signs) καὶ (and) τεράτων (wonders), ἐν (in the) δυνάμει (power) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit) [θεοῦ] (of God); ὥστε (so as) με (for me) ἀπὸ (from) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem), καὶ (and) κύκλῳ (around) μέχρι (unto) τοῦ (-) Ἰλλυρικοῦ (Illyricum), πεπληρωκέναι (to have fully proclaimed) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ),

¹⁵ Καὶ (And) ὁ (the) ἕβδομος (seventh) ἄγγελος (angel) ἐσάλπισεν (sounded his trumpet), καὶ (and) ἐγένοντο (there were) φωναὶ (voices) μεγάλαι (great) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) οὐρανῷ (heaven), λέγοντες (saying): “Ἐγένετο (Has become) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world), τοῦ (that of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us), καὶ (and) τοῦ (of the) Χριστοῦ (Christ) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) βασιλεύσει (He will reign) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages) τῶν (of the) αἰώνων (ages).”

³³ Ἄλλην (Another) παραβολὴν (parable) ἐλάλησεν (spoke He) αὐτοῖς (to them): “Ὁμοία (Like) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) ζύμῃ (to leaven), ἣν (which) λαβοῦσα (having taken), γυνὴ (a woman) ἐνέκρυψεν (hid) εἰς (in) ἀλεύρου (of flour) σάτα (measures) τρία (three), ἕως (until) οὗ (of it) ἐζυμώθη (was leavened) ὅλον (all).”

¹⁴ ὃς (whoever) δ’ (however) ἂν (-) πίῃ (may drink) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) ὕδατος (water) οὗ (that) ἐγὼ (I) δώσω (will give) αὐτῷ (him), οὐ (never) μὴ (not) διψήσει (will thirst), εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age). ἀλλὰ (Instead), τὸ (the) ὕδωρ (water) ὃ (that) δώσω (I will give) αὐτῷ (to him) γενήσεται (will become) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him) πηγὴ (a spring) ὕδατος (of water), ἁλλομένου (welling up) εἰς (into) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal).”

⁶ Οὐ (Not) καλὸν (good is) τὸ (the) καύχημα (boasting) ὑμῶν (of you). οὐκ (Not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) μικρὰ (a little) ζύμη (leaven) ὅλον (all) τὸ (the) φύραμα (lump) ζυμοῖ (leavens)?

⁶ πεποιθὼς (being persuaded of) αὐτὸ (the very thing) τοῦτο (this), ὅτι (that) ὁ (the One) ἐναρξάμενος (having begun) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) ἔργον (a work) ἀγαθὸν (good) ἐπιτελέσει (will complete it) ἄχρι (until) ἡμέρας (the day) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).

⁹ Καὶ (And) τοῦτο (this) προσεύχομαι (I pray), ἵνα (that) ἡ (the) ἀγάπη (love) ὑμῶν (of you), ἔτι (yet) μᾶλλον (more) καὶ (and) μᾶλλον (more) περισσεύῃ (may abound) ἐν (in) ἐπιγνώσει (knowledge) καὶ (and) πάσῃ (all) αἰσθήσει (discernment), ¹⁰ εἰς (for) τὸ (-) δοκιμάζειν (to approve) ὑμᾶς (you) τὰ (the things) διαφέροντα (being excellent), ἵνα (so that) ἦτε (you may be) εἰλικρινεῖς (pure) καὶ (and) ἀπρόσκοποι (blameless) εἰς (unto) ἡμέραν (the day) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ¹¹ πεπληρωμένοι (being filled) καρπὸν (with the fruit) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness) τὸν (that is) διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), εἰς (to) δόξαν (the glory) καὶ (and) ἔπαινον (praise) Θεοῦ (of God).

²³ Αὐτὸς (Himself) δὲ (now), ὁ (the) Θεὸς (God) τῆς (-) εἰρήνης (of peace) ἁγιάσαι (may sanctify) ὑμᾶς (you) ὁλοτελεῖς (completely); καὶ (and) ὁλόκληρον (entirely) ὑμῶν (your) τὸ (-) πνεῦμα (spirit) καὶ (and) ἡ (-) ψυχὴ (soul) καὶ (and) τὸ (-) σῶμα (body), ἀμέμπτως (blameless) ἐν (at) τῇ (the) παρουσίᾳ (coming) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), τηρηθείη (may be preserved). ²⁴ πιστὸς (Is faithful) ὁ (the One) καλῶν (calling) ὑμᾶς (you), ὃς (who) καὶ (also) ποιήσει (will do it).

²¹ διὸ (Therefore), ἀποθέμενοι (having put aside) πᾶσαν (all) ῥυπαρίαν (filthiness) καὶ (and) περισσείαν (abounding) κακίας (of wickedness), ἐν (in) πραΰτητι (humility) δέξασθε (receive) τὸν (the) ἔμφυτον (implanted) λόγον (word), τὸν (-) δυνάμενον (being able) σῶσαι (to save) τὰς (the) ψυχὰς (souls) ὑμῶν (of you).

³⁵ Καὶ (And) περιῆγεν (was going throughout) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) τὰς (the) πόλεις (cities) πάσας (all) καὶ (and) τὰς (the) κώμας (villages), διδάσκων (teaching) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συναγωγαῖς (synagogues) αὐτῶν (of them), καὶ (and) κηρύσσων (proclaiming) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) τῆς (of the) βασιλείας (kingdom), καὶ (and) θεραπεύων (healing) πᾶσαν (every) νόσον (disease) καὶ (and) πᾶσαν (every) μαλακίαν (sickness).

⁶ καὶ (And) ἐθαύμαζεν* (He was amazed) διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) ἀπιστίαν (unbelief) αὐτῶν (of them). Καὶ (And) περιῆγεν (He was going) τὰς (the) κώμας (villages) κύκλῳ (around), διδάσκων (teaching).

³² Ἦσαν (They were) δὲ (then) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ὁδῷ (way), ἀναβαίνοντες (going up) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem), καὶ (and) ἦν (was) προάγων (going on before) αὐτοὺς (them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), καὶ (and) ἐθαμβοῦντο (they were astonished); οἱ (those) δὲ (then) ἀκολουθοῦντες (following) ἐφοβοῦντο (were afraid). καὶ (And) παραλαβὼν (having taken to Him) πάλιν (again) τοὺς (the) δώδεκα (Twelve), ἤρξατο (He began) αὐτοῖς (them) λέγειν (to tell) τὰ (the things) μέλλοντα (being about) αὐτῷ (to Him) συμβαίνειν (to happen): ³³ ὅτι (-) “Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἀναβαίνομεν (we go up) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) παραδοθήσεται (will be betrayed) τοῖς (to the) ἀρχιερεῦσιν (chief priests) καὶ (and) τοῖς (to the) γραμματεῦσιν (scribes), καὶ (and) κατακρινοῦσιν (they will condemn) αὐτὸν (Him) θανάτῳ (to death), καὶ (and) παραδώσουσιν (will betray) αὐτὸν (Him) τοῖς (to the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles). ³⁴ καὶ (And) ἐμπαίξουσιν (they will mock) αὐτῷ (Him), καὶ (and) ἐμπτύσουσιν (will spit upon) αὐτῷ (Him), καὶ (and) μαστιγώσουσιν (will flog) αὐτὸν (Him), καὶ (and) ἀποκτενοῦσιν (will kill), καὶ (and) μετὰ (on the) τρεῖς (third) ἡμέρας (day) ἀναστήσεται (He will rise again).”

⁴³ ὁ (-) δὲ (But) εἶπεν (He said) πρὸς (to) αὐτοὺς (them) ὅτι (-), “Καὶ (Also) ταῖς (to the) ἑτέραις (other) πόλεσιν (towns) εὐαγγελίσασθαί (to preach the good news) με (Me) δεῖ (it behooves), τὴν (of the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God); ὅτι (because) ἐπὶ (for) τοῦτο (this) ἀπεστάλην (have I been sent forth).” ⁴⁴ Καὶ (And) ἦν (He was) κηρύσσων (preaching) εἰς (in) τὰς (the) συναγωγὰς (synagogues) τῆς (-) Ἰουδαίας (of Judea).

⁵¹ Ἐγένετο (It came to pass) δὲ (then) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) συμπληροῦσθαι (completing) τὰς (the) ἡμέρας (days) τῆς (of the) ἀναλήμψεως (ascension) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (that) αὐτὸς (He) τὸ (the) πρόσωπον (face) ἐστήρισεν (steadfastly set) τοῦ (-) πορεύεσθαι (to go) εἰς (to) Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem).

³⁸ Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) τὸν (-) ἀπὸ (from) Ναζαρέθ (Nazareth), ὡς (how) ἔχρισεν (anointed) αὐτὸν (Him) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) Πνεύματι (Spirit) Ἁγίῳ (with Holy) καὶ (and) δυνάμει (with power), ὃς (who) διῆλθεν (went about) εὐεργετῶν (doing good) καὶ (and) ἰώμενος (healing) πάντας (all) τοὺς (those) καταδυναστευομένους (being oppressed) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) διαβόλου (devil), ὅτι (because) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἦν (was) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him).

¹⁴ ὅτι (For) στενὴ (small is) ἡ (the) πύλη (gate) καὶ (and) τεθλιμμένη (compressed) ἡ (the) ὁδὸς (way) ἡ (-) ἀπάγουσα (leading) εἰς (to) τὴν (-) ζωήν (life), καὶ (and) ὀλίγοι (few) εἰσὶν (are) οἱ (those) εὑρίσκοντες (finding) αὐτήν (it).

²⁵ Ἀκούσαντες (Having heard) δὲ (now), οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) ἐξεπλήσσοντο (were astonished) σφόδρα (exceedingly), λέγοντες (saying), “Τίς (Who) ἄρα (then) δύναται (is able) σωθῆναι (to be saved)?”

¹⁶ Οὕτως (Thus) ἔσονται (will be) οἱ (the) ἔσχατοι (last) πρῶτοι (first), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) πρῶτοι (first), ἔσχατοι (last).”

¹⁴ Πολλοὶ (Many) γάρ (for) εἰσιν (are) κλητοὶ (called), ὀλίγοι (few) δὲ (however) ἐκλεκτοί (chosen).”

³ Καθημένου (As was sitting) δὲ (now) αὐτοῦ (He) ἐπὶ (upon) τοῦ (the) ὄρους (Mount) τῶν (-) Ἐλαιῶν (of Olives), προσῆλθον (came to) αὐτῷ (Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) κατ’ (in) ἰδίαν (private), λέγοντες (saying), “Εἰπὲ (Tell) ἡμῖν (us), πότε (when) ταῦτα (these things) ἔσται (will be)? καὶ (And) τί (what is) τὸ (the) σημεῖον (sign) τῆς (-) σῆς (of Your) παρουσίας (coming) καὶ (and) συντελείας (of the consummation) τοῦ (of the) αἰῶνος (age)?” ⁴ Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Βλέπετε (Take heed), μή (lest) τις (anyone) ὑμᾶς (you) πλανήσῃ (mislead). ⁵ πολλοὶ (Many) γὰρ (for) ἐλεύσονται (will come) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) μου (of Me), λέγοντες (saying), ‘Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ),’ καὶ (and) πολλοὺς (many) πλανήσουσιν (they will mislead).

⁴ “Εἰπὸν (Tell) ἡμῖν (us) πότε (when) ταῦτα (these things) ἔσται (will be)? καὶ (And) τί (what will be) τὸ (the) σημεῖον (sign) ὅταν (when) μέλλῃ (are going) ταῦτα (these things) συντελεῖσθαι (to be accomplished) πάντα (all)?” ⁵ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἤρξατο (began) λέγειν (to say) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Βλέπετε (Take heed), μή (lest) τις (anyone) ὑμᾶς (you) πλανήσῃ (mislead).

¹³ Εἶπεν (Said) δέ (then) τις (one) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) ὄχλου (crowd) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Διδάσκαλε (Teacher), εἰπὲ (say) τῷ (to the) ἀδελφῷ (brother) μου (of me) μερίσασθαι (to divide) μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (me) τὴν (the) κληρονομίαν (inheritance).” ¹⁴ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἄνθρωπε (Man), τίς (who) με (Me) κατέστησεν (appointed) κριτὴν (a judge) ἢ (or) μεριστὴν (partitioner) ἐφ’ (over) ὑμᾶς (you)?” ¹⁵ εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Ὁρᾶτε (Beware) καὶ (and) φυλάσσεσθε (keep yourselves) ἀπὸ (from) πάσης (all) πλεονεξίας (covetousness); ὅτι (for) οὐκ (not) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) περισσεύειν (abundance) τινὶ (to anyone), ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) αὐτοῦ (to him) ἐστιν (is) ἐκ (of) τῶν (that which) ὑπαρχόντων (possesses) αὐτῷ (of him).”

⁷ Ἐπηρώτησαν (They asked) δὲ (then) αὐτὸν (Him), λέγοντες (saying), “Διδάσκαλε (Teacher), πότε (when) οὖν (then) ταῦτα (these things) ἔσται (will be), καὶ (and) τί (what will be) τὸ (the) σημεῖον (sign) ὅταν (when) μέλλῃ (are about) ταῦτα (these things) γίνεσθαι (to take place)?” ⁸ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said), “Βλέπετε (Take heed), μὴ (lest) πλανηθῆτε (you be led astray); πολλοὶ (many) γὰρ (for) ἐλεύσονται (will come) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) μου (of Me), λέγοντες (saying), ‘Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am He),’ καί (and) ‘Ὁ (The) καιρὸς (time) ἤγγικεν (is drawn near).’ μὴ (Not) πορευθῆτε (go) ὀπίσω (after) αὐτῶν (them).

²¹ τοῦτον (Him) οὖν (therefore) ἰδὼν (having seen), ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) λέγει (says) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (to Jesus), “Κύριε (Lord), οὗτος (this man) δὲ (and) τί (what about)?” ²² Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἐὰν (If) αὐτὸν (him) θέλω (I desire) μένειν (to remain) ἕως (until) ἔρχομαι (I come), τί (what is it) πρὸς (to) σέ (you)? σύ (You) μοι (Me) ἀκολούθει (follow)!”

⁷ Εἶπεν (He said) ‹δὲ› (then) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Οὐχ (Not) ὑμῶν (yours) ἐστιν (it is) γνῶναι (to know) χρόνους (times) ἢ (or) καιροὺς (seasons) οὓς (which) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ἔθετο (put in place) ἐν (by) τῇ (-) ἰδίᾳ (His own) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority). ⁸ ἀλλὰ (But) λήμψεσθε (you will receive) δύναμιν (power), ἐπελθόντος (having come) τοῦ (the) Ἁγίου (Holy) Πνεύματος (Spirit) ἐφ’ (upon) ὑμᾶς (you), καὶ (and) ἔσεσθέ (you will be) μου (for Me) μάρτυρες (witnesses), ἔν (in) τε (both) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) πάσῃ (all) τῇ (-) Ἰουδαίᾳ (Judea), καὶ (and) Σαμαρείᾳ (Samaria), καὶ (and) ἕως (to) ἐσχάτου (the uttermost part) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth).”

¹³ Εἰσέλθατε (Enter) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) στενῆς (narrow) πύλης (gate). ὅτι (For) πλατεῖα (wide is) ἡ (the) πύλη (gate) καὶ (and) εὐρύχωρος (broad) ἡ (the) ὁδὸς (way) ἡ (-) ἀπάγουσα (leading) εἰς (to) τὴν (-) ἀπώλειαν (destruction), καὶ (and) πολλοί (many) εἰσιν (are) οἱ (those) εἰσερχόμενοι (entering) δι’ (through) αὐτῆς (it). ¹⁴ ὅτι (For) στενὴ (small is) ἡ (the) πύλη (gate) καὶ (and) τεθλιμμένη (compressed) ἡ (the) ὁδὸς (way) ἡ (-) ἀπάγουσα (leading) εἰς (to) τὴν (-) ζωήν (life), καὶ (and) ὀλίγοι (few) εἰσὶν (are) οἱ (those) εὑρίσκοντες (finding) αὐτήν (it).

¹² ἀπὸ (From) δὲ (then) τῶν (the) ἡμερῶν (days) Ἰωάννου (of John) τοῦ (the) Βαπτιστοῦ (Baptist) ἕως (until) ἄρτι (now), ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) βιάζεται (is taken by violence), καὶ (and the) βιασταὶ (violent) ἁρπάζουσιν (claim) αὐτήν (it).

¹⁸ ἔλεγεν (Had been saying) γὰρ (for) ὁ (-) Ἰωάννης (John) τῷ (-) Ἡρῴδῃ (to Herod) ὅτι (-), “Οὐκ (Not) ἔξεστίν (it is lawful) σοι (for you) ἔχειν (to have) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (wife) τοῦ (of the) ἀδελφοῦ (brother) σου (of you).” ¹⁹ Ἡ (-) δὲ (And) Ἡρῳδιὰς (Herodias) ἐνεῖχεν (held it) αὐτῷ (against him), καὶ (and) ἤθελεν (wished) αὐτὸν (him) ἀποκτεῖναι (to kill), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἠδύνατο (was able); ²⁰ ὁ (-) γὰρ (for) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) ἐφοβεῖτο (was afraid of) τὸν (-) Ἰωάννην (John), εἰδὼς (knowing) αὐτὸν (him) ἄνδρα (to be a man) δίκαιον (righteous) καὶ (and) ἅγιον (holy); καὶ (and) συνετήρει (he kept safe) αὐτόν (him). καὶ (And) ἀκούσας (having heard) αὐτοῦ (him), πολλὰ (greatly) ἠπόρει (he was perplexed) καὶ (and) ἡδέως (gladly) αὐτοῦ (him) ἤκουεν (heard).

³⁶ ἀγρυπνεῖτε (Watch) δὲ (also) ἐν (at) παντὶ (every) καιρῷ (season), δεόμενοι (praying) ἵνα (that) κατισχύσητε (you may have strength) ἐκφυγεῖν (to escape) ταῦτα (these things) πάντα (all) τὰ (that) μέλλοντα (are about) γίνεσθαι (to come to pass) καὶ (and) σταθῆναι (to stand) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τοῦ (the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man).”

²⁷ ἐργάζεσθε (Work) μὴ (not for) τὴν (the) βρῶσιν (food) τὴν (that) ἀπολλυμένην (is perishing), ἀλλὰ (but for) τὴν (the) βρῶσιν (food) τὴν (-) μένουσαν (enduring) εἰς (unto) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal), ἣν (which) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ὑμῖν (to you) δώσει (will give). τοῦτον (Him) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ἐσφράγισεν (has sealed), ὁ (-) Θεός (God).”

³⁴ ζητήσετέ (You will seek) με (Me) καὶ (and) οὐχ (not) εὑρήσετέ (will find) [με] (Me); καὶ (and) ὅπου (where) εἰμὶ (am) ἐγὼ (I), ὑμεῖς (you) οὐ (not) δύνασθε (are able) ἐλθεῖν (to come).”

²¹ Εἶπεν (He said) οὖν (then) πάλιν (again) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἐγὼ (I) ὑπάγω (am going away) καὶ (and) ζητήσετέ (you will seek) με (Me), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἁμαρτίᾳ (sin) ὑμῶν (of you), ἀποθανεῖσθε (you will die); ὅπου (where) ἐγὼ (I) ὑπάγω (go), ὑμεῖς (you) οὐ (not) δύνασθε (are able) ἐλθεῖν (to come).”

³³ Τεκνία (Little children), ἔτι (yet) μικρὸν (a little while) μεθ’ (with) ὑμῶν (you) εἰμι (I am). ζητήσετέ (You will seek) με (Me); καὶ (and), καθὼς (as) εἶπον (I said) τοῖς (to the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews) ὅτι (-): ‘Ὅπου (Where) ἐγὼ (I) ὑπάγω (go), ὑμεῖς (you) οὐ (not) δύνασθε (are able) ἐλθεῖν (to come),’ καὶ (also) ὑμῖν (to you) λέγω (I say) ἄρτι (now).

³¹ Ἰσραὴλ (Israel) δὲ (however), διώκων (pursuing) νόμον (a law) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness), εἰς (to) νόμον (that law) οὐκ (not) ἔφθασεν (did attain). ³² διὰ (Because of) τί (why)? ὅτι (Because it was) οὐκ (not) ἐκ (by) πίστεως (faith), ἀλλ’ (but) ὡς (as) ἐξ (by) ἔργων (works). προσέκοψαν (They stumbled) τῷ (over the) λίθῳ (stone) τοῦ (-) προσκόμματος (of stumbling), ³³ καθὼς (as) γέγραπται (it has been written): “Ἰδοὺ (Behold) τίθημι (I lay) ἐν (in) Σιὼν (Zion) λίθον (a stone) προσκόμματος (of stumbling), καὶ (and) πέτραν (a rock) σκανδάλου (of offense); καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) πιστεύων (believing) ἐπ’ (on) αὐτῷ (Him), οὐ (never) καταισχυνθήσεται (will be put to shame).”

³ ἀγνοοῦντες (Being ignorant of) γὰρ (for) τὴν (the) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) ἰδίαν (own) [δικαιοσύνην] (righteousness) ζητοῦντες (seeking) στῆσαι (to establish), τῇ (to the) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), οὐχ (not) ὑπετάγησαν (they submitted).

²⁴ Οὐκ (Not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) οἱ (those) ἐν (in) σταδίῳ (a race course) τρέχοντες (running), πάντες (all) μὲν (indeed) τρέχουσιν (run); εἷς (one) δὲ (however) λαμβάνει (receives) τὸ (the) βραβεῖον (prize)? οὕτως (Thus) τρέχετε (run), ἵνα (that) καταλάβητε (you might obtain it). ²⁵ πᾶς (Everyone) δὲ (now) ὁ (-) ἀγωνιζόμενος (striving), πάντα (in all things) ἐγκρατεύεται (controls himself); ἐκεῖνοι (they) μὲν (indeed) οὖν (then), ἵνα (that) φθαρτὸν (a perishable) στέφανον (crown) λάβωσιν (they might receive), ἡμεῖς (we) δὲ (however) ἄφθαρτον (an imperishable). ²⁶ ἐγὼ (I) τοίνυν (therefore) οὕτως (thus) τρέχω (run), ὡς (as) οὐκ (not) ἀδήλως (uncertainly); οὕτως (so) πυκτεύω (I fight), ὡς (as) οὐκ (not) ἀέρα (the air) δέρων (beating). ²⁷ ἀλλὰ (But) ὑπωπιάζω (I batter) μου (of me) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) καὶ (and) δουλαγωγῶ (bring it into servitude), μή (not) πως (hardly) ἄλλοις (to others) κηρύξας (having preached), αὐτὸς (myself) ἀδόκιμος (disqualified) γένωμαι (I might be).

¹² Ὥστε (Therefore), ἀγαπητοί (beloved) μου (of me), καθὼς (just as) πάντοτε (always) ὑπηκούσατε (you have obeyed), μὴ (not) ὡς (as) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) παρουσίᾳ (presence) μου (of me) μόνον (only), ἀλλὰ (but) νῦν (now) πολλῷ (much) μᾶλλον (more) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀπουσίᾳ (absence) μου (of me), μετὰ (with) φόβου (fear) καὶ (and) τρόμου (trembling) τὴν (-) ἑαυτῶν (your own) σωτηρίαν (salvation) κατεργάζεσθε (work out). ¹³ Θεὸς (God) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the One) ἐνεργῶν (working) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) καὶ (both) τὸ (-) θέλειν (to will) καὶ (and) τὸ (-) ἐνεργεῖν (to work) ὑπὲρ (according to) τῆς (His) εὐδοκίας (good pleasure).

²⁹ Εἰς (Unto) ὃ (this) καὶ (also) κοπιῶ (I toil), ἀγωνιζόμενος (striving) κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) ἐνέργειαν (energy) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τὴν (-) ἐνεργουμένην (working) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (me) ἐν (in) δυνάμει (power).

¹¹ Σπουδάσωμεν (We should be diligent) οὖν (therefore) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) εἰς (into) ἐκείνην (that) τὴν (-) κατάπαυσιν (rest), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) αὐτῷ (same) τις (anyone) ὑποδείγματι (example) πέσῃ (should fall) τῆς (-) ἀπειθείας (of disobedience).

¹⁰ Διὸ (Therefore) μᾶλλον (rather), ἀδελφοί (brothers), σπουδάσατε (be diligent), βεβαίαν (sure) ὑμῶν (your) τὴν (-) κλῆσιν (calling) καὶ (and) ἐκλογὴν (election) ποιεῖσθαι (to make), ταῦτα (these things) γὰρ (for) ποιοῦντες (practicing) οὐ (never) μὴ (not) πταίσητέ (shall you stumble) ποτε (at any time).

²¹ Οὐ (Not) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) λέγων (saying) μοι (to Me), ‘Κύριε (Lord), Κύριε (Lord),’ εἰσελεύσεται (will enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens), ἀλλ’ (but) ὁ (the one) ποιῶν (doing) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me), τοῦ (who is) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens). ²² πολλοὶ (Many) ἐροῦσίν (will say) μοι (to Me) ἐν (in) ἐκείνῃ (that) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day), ‘Κύριε (Lord), Κύριε (Lord), οὐ (not) τῷ (in) σῷ (Your) ὀνόματι (name) ἐπροφητεύσαμεν (did we prophesy), καὶ (and) τῷ (in) σῷ (Your) ὀνόματι (name) δαιμόνια (demons) ἐξεβάλομεν (cast out), καὶ (and) τῷ (in) σῷ (your) ὀνόματι (name) δυνάμεις (miracles) πολλὰς (many) ἐποιήσαμεν (perform)?’ ²³ καὶ (And) τότε (then) ὁμολογήσω (I will declare) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὅτι (-), ‘Οὐδέποτε (Never) ἔγνων (knew I) ὑμᾶς (you); ἀποχωρεῖτε (depart you) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (Me), οἱ (those) ἐργαζόμενοι (working) τὴν (-) ἀνομίαν (lawlessness).’

¹⁰ Ἀπερχομένων (While are going away) δὲ (then) αὐτῶν (they) ἀγοράσαι (to buy), ἦλθεν (came) ὁ (the) νυμφίος (bridegroom), καὶ (and) αἱ (those) ἕτοιμοι (ready) εἰσῆλθον (went in) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) γάμους (wedding feast); καὶ (and) ἐκλείσθη (was shut) ἡ (the) θύρα (door). ¹¹ Ὕστερον (Afterward) δὲ (then) ἔρχονται (come) καὶ (also) αἱ (the) λοιπαὶ (other) παρθένοι (virgins), λέγουσαι (saying), ‘Κύριε (Lord), κύριε (Lord), ἄνοιξον (open) ἡμῖν (to us)!’ ¹² Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (he said), ‘Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), οὐκ (not) οἶδα (I do know) ὑμᾶς (you).’

⁴¹ Τότε (Then) ἐρεῖ (will He say) καὶ (also) τοῖς (to those) ἐξ (on) εὐωνύμων (the left), ‘Πορεύεσθε (Depart) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (Me), ‹οἱ› (those) κατηραμένοι (being cursed), εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πῦρ (fire) τὸ (-) αἰώνιον (eternal), τὸ (-) ἡτοιμασμένον (having been prepared) τῷ (for the) διαβόλῳ (devil) καὶ (and) τοῖς (the) ἀγγέλοις (angels) αὐτοῦ (of him).

⁴⁶ Τί (Why) δέ (now) με (Me) καλεῖτε (do you call) ‘Κύριε (Lord), κύριε (Lord),’ καὶ (and) οὐ (not) ποιεῖτε (do) ἃ (what) λέγω (I say)?

²⁷ Καὶ (And) ἐρεῖ (he will say), ‘Λέγων (I tell) ὑμῖν (you), Οὐκ (not) οἶδα (I do know) [ὑμᾶς] (you) πόθεν (from where) ἐστέ (you are); ἀπόστητε (depart) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (me), πάντες (all you) ἐργάται (workers) ἀδικίας (of unrighteousness).’

² λέγει (He says) γάρ (for): “Καιρῷ (In a time) δεκτῷ (acceptable) ἐπήκουσά (I listened to) σου (you), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (a day) σωτηρίας (of salvation) ἐβοήθησά (I helped) σοι (you).” Ἰδοὺ (Behold), νῦν (now) καιρὸς (is the time) εὐπρόσδεκτος (of favor); ἰδοὺ (behold), νῦν (now) ἡμέρα (is the day) σωτηρίας (of salvation).

⁷ Διό (Therefore), καθὼς (just as) λέγει (says) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τὸ (-) Ἅγιον (Holy): “Σήμερον (Today) ἐὰν (if) τῆς (the) φωνῆς (voice) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἀκούσητε (you should hear), ⁸ μὴ (not) σκληρύνητε (harden) τὰς (the) καρδίας (hearts) ὑμῶν (of you), ὡς (as) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) παραπικρασμῷ (rebellion), κατὰ (in) τὴν (the) ἡμέραν (day) τοῦ (-) πειρασμοῦ (of testing) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐρήμῳ (wilderness),

¹⁷ ἴστε (You know) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) καὶ (even) μετέπειτα (afterward), θέλων (wishing) κληρονομῆσαι (to inherit) τὴν (the) εὐλογίαν (blessing), ἀπεδοκιμάσθη (he was rejected); μετανοίας (of repentance) γὰρ (for) τόπον (place) οὐχ (not) εὗρεν (he found), καίπερ (although) μετὰ (with) δακρύων (tears) ἐκζητήσας (having earnestly sought) αὐτήν (it).

⁵ ἔχοντες (having) μόρφωσιν (a form) εὐσεβείας (of godliness) τὴν (-) δὲ (but) δύναμιν (the power) αὐτῆς (of it) ἠρνημένοι (denying). καὶ (And) τούτους (these) ἀποτρέπου (turn away from).

¹⁶ Θεὸν (God) ὁμολογοῦσιν (they profess) εἰδέναι (to know); τοῖς (in) δὲ (however) ἔργοις (works), ἀρνοῦνται (they deny Him), βδελυκτοὶ (detestable) ὄντες (being) καὶ (and) ἀπειθεῖς (disobedient), καὶ (and) πρὸς (for) πᾶν (any) ἔργον (work) ἀγαθὸν (good), ἀδόκιμοι (unfit).

¹² Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (he said), ‘Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), οὐκ (not) οἶδα (I do know) ὑμᾶς (you).’

²⁵ ἀφ’ (From) οὗ (what) ἂν (-) ἐγερθῇ (shall have risen up) ὁ (the) οἰκοδεσπότης (master of the house), καὶ (and) ἀποκλείσῃ (shall have shut) τὴν (the) θύραν (door), καὶ (then) ἄρξησθε (you should begin) ἔξω (outside) ἑστάναι (to stand) καὶ (and) κρούειν (to knock) τὴν (at the) θύραν (door), λέγοντες (saying), ‘Κύριε (Lord), ἄνοιξον (open) ἡμῖν (to us).’ Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (he answering), ἐρεῖ (will say) ὑμῖν (to you), ‘Οὐκ (Not) οἶδα (I do know) ὑμᾶς (you), πόθεν (from where) ἐστέ (are).’

³ εἰ (If) δέ (however) τις (anyone) ἀγαπᾷ (loves) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), οὗτος (he) ἔγνωσται (is known) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (Him).

⁹ νῦν (now) δὲ (however), γνόντες (having known) Θεόν (God), μᾶλλον (rather) δὲ (however) γνωσθέντες (having been known) ὑπὸ (by) Θεοῦ (God), πῶς (how) ἐπιστρέφετε (do you turn) πάλιν (again) ἐπὶ (to) τὰ (the) ἀσθενῆ (weak) καὶ (and) πτωχὰ (destitute) στοιχεῖα (principles), οἷς (to which) πάλιν (again) ἄνωθεν (anew) δουλεύειν* (to be enslaved) θέλετε (you desire)?

¹⁹ Ὁ (-) μέντοι (Nevertheless), στερεὸς (the firm) θεμέλιος (foundation) τοῦ (of) Θεοῦ (God) ἕστηκεν (stands), ἔχων (having) τὴν (the) σφραγῖδα (seal) ταύτην (this): “Ἔγνω (Knows) Κύριος (the Lord) τοὺς (those) ὄντας (being) αὐτοῦ (His),” καί (and), “Ἀποστήτω (Let depart) ἀπὸ (from) ἀδικίας (iniquity) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ὀνομάζων (naming) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) Κυρίου (of the Lord).”

¹¹ λέγω (I say) δὲ (now) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) πολλοὶ (many) ἀπὸ (from) ἀνατολῶν (east) καὶ (and) δυσμῶν (west) ἥξουσιν (will come), καὶ (and) ἀνακλιθήσονται (will recline) μετὰ (with) Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham) καὶ (and) Ἰσαὰκ (Isaac) καὶ (and) Ἰακὼβ (Jacob) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens); ¹² οἱ (the) δὲ (however) υἱοὶ (sons) τῆς (of the) βασιλείας (kingdom) ἐκβληθήσονται (will be cast out), εἰς (into) τὸ (the) σκότος (darkness) τὸ (the) ἐξώτερον (outer), ἐκεῖ (there) ἔσται (will be) ὁ (the) κλαυθμὸς (weeping) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) βρυγμὸς (gnashing) τῶν (of the) ὀδόντων (teeth).”

⁴² καὶ (and) βαλοῦσιν (they will cast) αὐτοὺς (them) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) κάμινον (furnace) τοῦ (of the) πυρός (fire); ἐκεῖ (there) ἔσται (will be) ὁ (the) κλαυθμὸς (weeping) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) βρυγμὸς (gnashing) τῶν (of) ὀδόντων (teeth).

⁵⁰ καὶ (and) βαλοῦσιν (will cast) αὐτοὺς (them) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) κάμινον (furnace) τοῦ (of the) πυρός (fire). ἐκεῖ (There) ἔσται (will be) ὁ (the) κλαυθμὸς (weeping) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) βρυγμὸς (gnashing) τῶν (of the) ὀδόντων (teeth).

¹³ Τότε (Then) ὁ (the) βασιλεὺς (king) εἶπεν (said) τοῖς (to the) διακόνοις (servants), ‘Δήσαντες (Having bound) αὐτοῦ (his) πόδας (feet) καὶ (and) χεῖρας (hands), ἐκβάλετε (cast out) αὐτὸν (him) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) σκότος (darkness) τὸ (-) ἐξώτερον (outer); ἐκεῖ (there) ἔσται (will be) ὁ (the) κλαυθμὸς (weeping) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) βρυγμὸς (gnashing) τῶν (of the) ὀδόντων (teeth).’

⁵¹ καὶ (and) διχοτομήσει (will cut in pieces) αὐτὸν (him), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) μέρος (place) αὐτοῦ (of him) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) ὑποκριτῶν (hypocrites) θήσει (will appoint); ἐκεῖ (there) ἔσται (will be) ὁ (the) κλαυθμὸς (weeping) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) βρυγμὸς (gnashing) τῶν (of) ὀδόντων (teeth).

³⁰ καὶ (And) τὸν (the) ἀχρεῖον (worthless) δοῦλον (servant), ἐκβάλετε (cast out) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) σκότος (darkness) τὸ (-) ἐξώτερον (outer); ἐκεῖ (there) ἔσται (will be) ὁ (the) κλαυθμὸς (weeping) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) βρυγμὸς (gnashing) τῶν (of the) ὀδόντων (teeth).’

¹⁵ καὶ (And) σύ (you), Καφαρναούμ (Capernaum), μὴ (not) ἕως (to) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) ὑψωθήσῃ (will you be lifted up); ἕως (to) τοῦ (-) ᾅδου (Hades) καταβήσῃ (you will be brought down).

¹⁵ Ἀκούσας (Having heard) δέ (then) τις (one) τῶν (of those) συνανακειμένων (reclining with Him) ταῦτα (these things), εἶπεν (he said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Μακάριος (Blessed is he) ὅστις (who) φάγεται (will eat) ἄρτον (bread) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).”

²³ καὶ (And) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) ᾅδῃ (Hades), ἐπάρας (having lifted up) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) αὐτοῦ (of him), ὑπάρχων (being) ἐν (in) βασάνοις (torment), ὁρᾷ (he sees) Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham) ἀπὸ (from) μακρόθεν (afar), καὶ (and) Λάζαρον (Lazarus) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) κόλποις (bosom) αὐτοῦ (of him).

⁴² καὶ (And) ἔλεγεν (he was saying), “Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), μνήσθητί (remember) μου (me) ὅταν (when) ἔλθῃς (You come) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) σου (of You)!” ⁴³ Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἀμήν (Truly) σοι (to you) λέγω (I say), σήμερον (today) μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (Me) ἔσῃ (you will be) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Παραδείσῳ (Paradise).”

⁵ Ἔνδειγμα (This is a plain token) τῆς (of the) δικαίας (righteous) κρίσεως (judgment) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), εἰς (unto) τὸ (-) καταξιωθῆναι (to be accounted worthy) ὑμᾶς (you) τῆς (of the) βασιλείας (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὑπὲρ (for) ἧς (which) καὶ (also) πάσχετε (you suffer).

¹¹ οὕτως (In this way) γὰρ (for) πλουσίως (richly) ἐπιχορηγηθήσεται (will be supplied) ὑμῖν (to you) ἡ (the) εἴσοδος (entrance) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) αἰώνιον (eternal) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) καὶ (and) Σωτῆρος (Savior), Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ).

⁸ Τοῖς (-) δὲ (But) δειλοῖς (to the cowardly) καὶ (and) ἀπίστοις (unbelieving) καὶ (and) ἐβδελυγμένοις (having become abominable) καὶ (and) φονεῦσιν (murderers) καὶ (and) πόρνοις (the sexually immoral) καὶ (and) φαρμάκοις (sorcerers) καὶ (and) εἰδωλολάτραις (idolaters) καὶ (and) πᾶσιν (all) τοῖς (-) ψευδέσιν (liars), τὸ (the) μέρος (portion) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐν (is in) τῇ (the) λίμνῃ (lake) τῇ (-) καιομένῃ (burning) πυρὶ (with fire) καὶ (and) θείῳ (brimstone), ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) θάνατος (death) ὁ (-) δεύτερος (second).”

¹⁵ ἔξω (Outside are) οἱ (the) κύνες (dogs), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) φάρμακοι (sorcerers), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) πόρνοι (sexually immoral), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) φονεῖς (murderers), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) εἰδωλολάτραι (idolaters), καὶ (and) πᾶς (everyone) φιλῶν (loving) καὶ (and) ποιῶν (practicing) ψεῦδος (falsehood).

¹¹ λέγω (I say) δὲ (now) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) πολλοὶ (many) ἀπὸ (from) ἀνατολῶν (east) καὶ (and) δυσμῶν (west) ἥξουσιν (will come), καὶ (and) ἀνακλιθήσονται (will recline) μετὰ (with) Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham) καὶ (and) Ἰσαὰκ (Isaac) καὶ (and) Ἰακὼβ (Jacob) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens);

²⁷ καὶ (And) τότε (then) ἀποστελεῖ (He will send) τοὺς (the) ἀγγέλους (angels), καὶ (and) ἐπισυνάξει (will gather together) τοὺς (the) ἐκλεκτοὺς (elect) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἐκ (from) τῶν (the) τεσσάρων (four) ἀνέμων (winds), ἀπ’ (from the) ἄκρου (end) γῆς (of earth) ἕως (to the) ἄκρου (end) οὐρανοῦ (of heaven).

²⁸ Γνωστὸν (Known) οὖν (therefore) ἔστω (be it) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) τοῖς (to the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles) ἀπεστάλη (has been sent) τοῦτο (this) τὸ (-) σωτήριον (salvation) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God); αὐτοὶ (they) καὶ (then) ἀκούσονται (will listen)!”

⁶ εἶναι (are) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles) συνκληρονόμα (joint-heirs), καὶ (and) σύσσωμα (a joint-body), καὶ (and) συμμέτοχα (joint-partakers) τῆς (of the) ἐπαγγελίας (promise) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel), ⁷ οὗ (of which) ἐγενήθην (I became) διάκονος (servant) κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) δωρεὰν (gift) τῆς (of the) χάριτος (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) τῆς (-), δοθείσης (having been given) μοι (to me) κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) ἐνέργειαν (working) τῆς (of the) δυνάμεως (power) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ⁸ Ἐμοὶ (To me), τῷ (the) ἐλαχιστοτέρῳ (very least) πάντων (of all) ἁγίων (saints), ἐδόθη (was given) ἡ (the) χάρις (grace) αὕτη (this): τοῖς (to the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles) εὐαγγελίσασθαι (to preach) τὸ (the) ἀνεξιχνίαστον (unsearchable) πλοῦτος (riches) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ),

⁶ τοῦ (the one) παρόντος (being present) εἰς (unto) ὑμᾶς (you), καθὼς (just as) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) παντὶ (all) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) ἐστὶν (it is) καρποφορούμενον (bearing fruit) καὶ (and) αὐξανόμενον (increasing), καθὼς (just as) καὶ (also) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you), ἀφ’ (from) ἧς (the) ἡμέρας (day) ἠκούσατε (you heard) καὶ (and) ἐπέγνωτε (knew) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) ἀληθείᾳ (truth),

²³ εἴ (if) γε (indeed) ἐπιμένετε (you continue) τῇ (-) πίστει (in the faith), τεθεμελιωμένοι (established) καὶ (and) ἑδραῖοι (firm), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) μετακινούμενοι (being moved away) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) ἐλπίδος (hope) τοῦ (of the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel) οὗ (that) ἠκούσατε (you have heard), τοῦ (-) κηρυχθέντος (having been proclaimed) ἐν (in) πάσῃ (all) κτίσει (creation) τῇ (-) ὑπὸ (under) τὸν (-) οὐρανόν (heaven), οὗ (of which) ἐγενόμην (have become) ἐγὼ (I) Παῦλος (Paul) διάκονος (a minister).

⁹ Μετὰ (After) ταῦτα (these things) εἶδον (I looked), καὶ (and) ἰδοὺ (behold), ὄχλος (a multitude) πολύς (great), ὃν (which) ἀριθμῆσαι (to number) αὐτὸν (it) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἐδύνατο (was able), ἐκ (out of) παντὸς (every) ἔθνους (nation), καὶ (and) φυλῶν (tribes), καὶ (and) λαῶν (peoples), καὶ (and) γλωσσῶν (tongues), ἑστῶτες (standing) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (the) θρόνου (throne) καὶ (and) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (the) Ἀρνίου (Lamb), περιβεβλημένους (having been clothed with) στολὰς (robes) λευκάς (white), καὶ (and) φοίνικες (palm branches) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) χερσὶν (hands) αὐτῶν (of them). ¹⁰ καὶ (And) κράζουσιν (they were crying out) φωνῇ (in a voice) μεγάλῃ (loud), λέγοντες (saying): “Ἡ (-) σωτηρία (Salvation) τῷ (to the) Θεῷ (God) ἡμῶν (of us), τῷ (the One) καθημένῳ (sitting) ἐπὶ (on) τῷ (the) θρόνῳ (throne), καὶ (and) τῷ (to the) Ἀρνίῳ (Lamb)!”

³⁰ Πολλοὶ (Many) δὲ (however) ἔσονται (will be) πρῶτοι (first) ἔσχατοι (last), καὶ (and) ἔσχατοι (last) πρῶτοι (first).

²⁸ Τί (What) δὲ (however) ὑμῖν (you) δοκεῖ (think)? ἄνθρωπος (A man) εἶχεν (had) τέκνα (sons) δύο (two), [καὶ] (and) προσελθὼν (having come) τῷ (to the) πρώτῳ (first) εἶπεν (he said), ‘Τέκνον (Son), ὕπαγε (go) σήμερον (today), ἐργάζου (work) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀμπελῶνι (vineyard).’ ²⁹ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (he said), ‘‹Οὐ (Not) θέλω (will I).’ ὕστερον (Afterward) δὲ (however), μεταμεληθεὶς› (having repented), ἀπῆλθεν (he went). ³⁰ Προσελθὼν (Having come) δὲ (then) τῷ (to the) δευτέρῳ (second), εἶπεν (he said) ὡσαύτως (likewise). Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (he said), ‘Ἐγώ* (I will) κύριε* (sir),’ καὶ* (and) οὐκ* (not) ἀπῆλθεν (did he go). ³¹ Τίς (Which) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) δύο (two) ἐποίησεν (did) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (of the) πατρός (father)?” Λέγουσιν (They say), “Ὁ (The) πρῶτος* (first).” Λέγει (Says) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) οἱ (the) τελῶναι (tax collectors) καὶ (and) αἱ (the) πόρναι (prostitutes) προάγουσιν (go before) ὑμᾶς (you) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

¹⁴ Καὶ (And) ἤκουσεν (heard) ὁ (-) βασιλεὺς (King) Ἡρῴδης (Herod); φανερὸν (well known) γὰρ (for) ἐγένετο (became) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him). καὶ (And) ἔλεγον (they were saying) ὅτι (-), “Ἰωάννης (John), ὁ (the one) Βαπτίζων (baptizing), ἐγήγερται (is risen) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead), καὶ (and) διὰ (because of) τοῦτο (this) ἐνεργοῦσιν (operate) αἱ (the) δυνάμεις (miraculous powers) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him).”

²⁶ Καὶ (And) περίλυπος (encompassingly sorrowful) γενόμενος (having been made) ὁ (the) βασιλεὺς (king), διὰ (on account of) τοὺς (the) ὅρκους (oaths) καὶ (and) τοὺς (those) ἀνακειμένους (reclining with him), οὐκ (not) ἠθέλησεν (was he willing) ἀθετῆσαι (to refuse) αὐτήν (her). ²⁷ καὶ (And) εὐθὺς (immediately) ἀποστείλας (having sent) ὁ (the) βασιλεὺς (king) σπεκουλάτορα (an executioner), ἐπέταξεν (he commanded) ἐνέγκαι (to be brought) τὴν (the) κεφαλὴν (head) αὐτοῦ (of him). καὶ (And) ἀπελθὼν (having gone), ἀπεκεφάλισεν (he beheaded) αὐτὸν (him) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) φυλακῇ (prison), ²⁸ καὶ (and) ἤνεγκεν (brought) τὴν (the) κεφαλὴν (head) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἐπὶ (upon) πίνακι (a platter), καὶ (and) ἔδωκεν (gave) αὐτὴν (it) τῷ (to the) κορασίῳ (girl), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) κοράσιον (girl) ἔδωκεν (gave) αὐτὴν (it) τῇ (to the) μητρὶ (mother) αὐτῆς (of her).

¹⁹ ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) ὁ (the) τετραάρχης (tetrarch), ἐλεγχόμενος (being reproved) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (him) περὶ (concerning) Ἡρῳδιάδος (Herodias), τῆς (the) γυναικὸς (wife) τοῦ (of the) ἀδελφοῦ (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) περὶ (concerning) πάντων (all) ὧν (that) ἐποίησεν (had done) πονηρῶν (the evils) ὁ (-) Ἡρῴδης (Herod), ²⁰ προσέθηκεν (added) καὶ (yet) τοῦτο (this) ἐπὶ (to) πᾶσιν (all): ‹καὶ› (Also) κατέκλεισεν (he locked up) τὸν (-) Ἰωάννην (John) ἐν (in) φυλακῇ (prison).

⁷ Ἤκουσεν (Heard of) δὲ (now) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) ὁ (the) τετραάρχης (Tetrarch) τὰ (the things) γινόμενα (being done) πάντα (all), καὶ (and) διηπόρει (was perplexed), διὰ (because) τὸ (-) λέγεσθαι (it was said) ὑπό (by) τινων (some) ὅτι (-) Ἰωάννης (John) ἠγέρθη (has been raised) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead), ⁸ ὑπό (by) τινων (some) δὲ (also) ὅτι (that) Ἠλίας (Elijah) ἐφάνη (had appeared), ἄλλων (by others) δὲ (also) ὅτι (that) προφήτης (a prophet) τις (one) τῶν (of the) ἀρχαίων (ancients) ἀνέστη (had arisen). ⁹ Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) ‹ὁ› (-) Ἡρῴδης (Herod), “Ἰωάννην (John) ἐγὼ (I) ἀπεκεφάλισα (beheaded); τίς (who) δέ (however) ἐστιν (is) οὗτος (this) περὶ (concerning) οὗ (whom) ἀκούω (I hear) τοιαῦτα (such things)?” καὶ (And) ἐζήτει (he was seeking) ἰδεῖν (to see) αὐτόν (Him).

⁸ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἡρῴδης (Herod), ἰδὼν (having seen) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), ἐχάρη (was glad) λίαν (exceedingly); ἦν (he was) γὰρ (for) ἐξ (of) ἱκανῶν (a long) χρόνων (time) θέλων (wishing) ἰδεῖν (to see) αὐτὸν (Him), διὰ (because of) τὸ (-) ἀκούειν (hearing) περὶ (concerning) αὐτοῦ (Him); καὶ (and) ἤλπιζέν (he was hoping) τι (some) σημεῖον (sign) ἰδεῖν (to see) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (Him) γινόμενον (done). ⁹ ἐπηρώτα (He kept questioning) δὲ (then) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐν (in) λόγοις (words) ἱκανοῖς (many); αὐτὸς (He) δὲ (however) οὐδὲν (nothing) ἀπεκρίνατο (answered) αὐτῷ (him). ¹⁰ Εἱστήκεισαν (Had been standing by) δὲ (now) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes), εὐτόνως (vehemently) κατηγοροῦντες (accusing) αὐτοῦ (Him). ¹¹ ἐξουθενήσας (Having set at naught) δὲ (then) αὐτὸν (Him), ‹καὶ› (also) ὁ (-) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) σὺν (with) τοῖς (the) στρατεύμασιν (troops) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ἐμπαίξας (having mocked Him), περιβαλὼν (having put on Him) ἐσθῆτα (apparel) λαμπρὰν (splendid), ἀνέπεμψεν (sent back) αὐτὸν (him) τῷ (to) Πιλάτῳ (Pilate).

³² ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) αὐτοῖς (them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Πολλὰ (Many) ἔργα (works) «ἔδειξα (I have shown) ὑμῖν» (you) καλὰ (good) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father); διὰ (because of) ποῖον (which) αὐτῶν (of these) ἔργον (work), ἐμὲ (Me) λιθάζετε (do you stone)?”

⁸ Λέγουσιν (Say) αὐτῷ (to Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταί (disciples), “Ῥαββί (Rabbi), νῦν (just now) ἐζήτουν (were seeking) σε (You) λιθάσαι (to stone) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), καὶ (and) πάλιν (again) ὑπάγεις (You are going) ἐκεῖ (there)?” ⁹ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Οὐχὶ (Not) δώδεκα (twelve) ὧραί (hours) εἰσιν (are there) τῆς (in the) ἡμέρας (day)? ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) περιπατῇ (walks) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day), οὐ (not) προσκόπτει (he stumbles), ὅτι (because) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (of this) βλέπει (he sees); ¹⁰ ἐὰν (if) δέ (however) τις (anyone) περιπατῇ (walks) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) νυκτί (night), προσκόπτει (he stumbles), ὅτι (because) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him).”

⁴ ἐγώ (I) σε (You) ἐδόξασα (glorified) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), τὸ (the) ἔργον (work) τελειώσας (having completed) ὃ (that) δέδωκάς (You have given) μοι (Me) ἵνα (that) ποιήσω (I should do). ⁵ καὶ (And) νῦν (now) δόξασόν (glorify) με (Me) σύ (You), Πάτερ (Father), παρὰ (with) σεαυτῷ (Yourself), τῇ (with the) δόξῃ (glory) ᾗ (that) εἶχον (I had) πρὸ (before) τοῦ (-) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) εἶναι (existed), παρὰ (with) σοί (You).

³⁰ ὅτε (When) οὖν (therefore) ἔλαβεν (took) τὸ (the) ὄξος (sour wine) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), εἶπεν (He said), “Τετέλεσται (It has been finished).” καὶ (And) κλίνας (having bowed) τὴν (the) κεφαλὴν (head), παρέδωκεν (He yielded up) τὸ (the) πνεῦμα (spirit).

¹⁰ Ἔπρεπεν (It was fitting) γὰρ (for) αὐτῷ (to Him), δι’ (for) ὃν (whom are) τὰ (-) πάντα (all things) καὶ (and) δι’ (by) οὗ (whom are) τὰ (-) πάντα (all things), πολλοὺς (many) υἱοὺς (sons) εἰς (to) δόξαν (glory) ἀγαγόντα (having brought), τὸν (the) ἀρχηγὸν (archetype) τῆς (of the) σωτηρίας (salvation) αὐτῶν (of them), διὰ (through) παθημάτων (sufferings) τελειῶσαι (to make perfect).

⁹ καὶ (and) τελειωθεὶς (having been perfected), ἐγένετο (He became) πᾶσιν (to all) τοῖς (those) ὑπακούουσιν (obeying) αὐτῷ (Him), αἴτιος (the author) σωτηρίας (of salvation) αἰωνίου (eternal),

²⁸ ὁ (The) νόμος (law) γὰρ (for) ἀνθρώπους (men) καθίστησιν (appoints) ἀρχιερεῖς (as high priests), ἔχοντας (having) ἀσθένειαν (weakness); ὁ (the) λόγος (word) δὲ (however) τῆς (of the) ὁρκωμοσίας (oath), τῆς (which is) μετὰ (after) τὸν (the) νόμον (law), Υἱόν (a Son) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age), τετελειωμένον (having been perfected).

¹⁸ “Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἀναβαίνομεν (we go up) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) παραδοθήσεται (will be betrayed) τοῖς (to the) ἀρχιερεῦσιν (chief priests) καὶ (and) γραμματεῦσιν (scribes), καὶ (and) κατακρινοῦσιν (they will condemn) αὐτὸν (Him) 〈εἰς〉 (to) θανάτῳ* (death),

¹¹ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) ὄχλοι (the crowds) ἔλεγον (were saying), “Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) προφήτης (prophet), Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), ὁ (the One) ἀπὸ (from) Ναζαρὲθ (Nazareth) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (of Galilee).”

⁵³ καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἐδέξαντο (they did receive) αὐτόν (Him), ὅτι (because) τὸ (the) πρόσωπον (face) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἦν (was as) πορευόμενον (going) εἰς (toward) Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem).

³⁴ Λέγει (Says) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἐμὸν (My) βρῶμά (food) ἐστιν (is) ἵνα (that) ποιήσω* (I should do) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (of the One) πέμψαντός (having sent) με (Me), καὶ (and) τελειώσω (should finish) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τὸ (the) ἔργον (work).

⁴ ἡμᾶς (Us) δεῖ (it behooves) ἐργάζεσθαι (to work) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) τοῦ (of the One) πέμψαντός (having sent) με (Me), ἕως (while) ἡμέρα (day) ἐστίν (it is); ἔρχεται (is coming) νὺξ (night), ὅτε (when) οὐδεὶς (no one) δύναται (is able) ἐργάζεσθαι (to work).

⁹ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Οὐχὶ (Not) δώδεκα (twelve) ὧραί (hours) εἰσιν (are there) τῆς (in the) ἡμέρας (day)? ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) περιπατῇ (walks) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day), οὐ (not) προσκόπτει (he stumbles), ὅτι (because) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (of this) βλέπει (he sees);

⁵⁴ Ὁ (-) οὖν (Therefore) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) οὐκέτι (no longer) παρρησίᾳ (publicly) περιεπάτει (walked) ἐν (among) τοῖς (the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews), ἀλλὰ (but) ἀπῆλθεν (went away) ἐκεῖθεν (from there) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) χώραν (region) ἐγγὺς (near) τῆς (the) ἐρήμου (wilderness), εἰς (to) Ἐφραὶμ (Ephraim) λεγομένην (called) πόλιν (a city). κἀκεῖ (And there) ἔμεινεν (He stayed) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) μαθητῶν (disciples).

³⁵ Εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (therefore) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἔτι (Yet) μικρὸν (a little) χρόνον (while) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) ἐν (with) ὑμῖν (you) ἐστιν (is). περιπατεῖτε (Walk) ὡς (while) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) ἔχετε (you have), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) σκοτία (darkness) ὑμᾶς (you) καταλάβῃ (might overtake). καὶ (And) ὁ (the one) περιπατῶν (walking) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) οὐκ (not) οἶδεν (knows) ποῦ (where) ὑπάγει (he is going).

²⁷ οἱ (Those) γὰρ (for) κατοικοῦντες (dwelling) ἐν (in) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἄρχοντες (rulers) αὐτῶν (of them), τοῦτον (Him) ἀγνοήσαντες (not having known), καὶ (and) τὰς (the) φωνὰς (voices) τῶν (of the) προφητῶν (prophets) τὰς (that) κατὰ (on) πᾶν (every) σάββατον (Sabbath) ἀναγινωσκομένας (are being read), κρίναντες (having condemned Him) ἐπλήρωσαν (they fulfilled them).

³⁵ καὶ (And) λαβόντες (having taken) οἱ (the) γεωργοὶ (farmers) τοὺς (the) δούλους (servants) αὐτοῦ (of him), ὃν (one) μὲν (-) ἔδειραν (they beat), ὃν (one) δὲ (then) ἀπέκτειναν (they killed), ὃν (one) δὲ (then) ἐλιθοβόλησαν (they stoned). ³⁶ Πάλιν (Again) ἀπέστειλεν (he sent) ἄλλους (other) δούλους (servants), πλείονας (more) τῶν (than the) πρώτων (first), καὶ (and) ἐποίησαν (they did) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὡσαύτως (likewise).

³ καὶ (And) ἀπέστειλεν (he sent) τοὺς (the) δούλους (servants) αὐτοῦ (of him) καλέσαι (to call) τοὺς (those) κεκλημένους (having been invited) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) γάμους (wedding feast), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἤθελον (they were willing) ἐλθεῖν (to come).

⁶ οἱ (-) δὲ (And) λοιποὶ (the rest), κρατήσαντες (having laid hold of) τοὺς (the) δούλους (servants) αὐτοῦ (of him), ὕβρισαν (mistreated) καὶ (and) ἀπέκτειναν (killed them).

³⁷ Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem), Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem), ἡ (-) ἀποκτείνουσα (killing) τοὺς (the) προφήτας (prophets) καὶ (and) λιθοβολοῦσα (stoning) τοὺς (those) ἀπεσταλμένους (having been sent) πρὸς (to) αὐτήν (her)! ποσάκις (How often) ἠθέλησα (would I) ἐπισυναγαγεῖν (have gathered together) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) σου (of you), ὃν (in which) τρόπον (way) ὄρνις (a hen) ἐπισυνάγει (gathers together) τὰ (the) νοσσία (chicks) αὐτῆς (of her) ὑπὸ (under) τὰς (the) πτέρυγας (wings), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἠθελήσατε (you were willing)! ³⁸ ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἀφίεται (is left) ὑμῖν (to you) ὁ (the) οἶκος (house) ὑμῶν (of you) ‹ἔρημος› (desolate)! ³⁹ λέγω (I say) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (to you), οὐ (no) μή (not) με (Me) ἴδητε (shall you see) ἀπ’ (from) ἄρτι (now) ἕως (until) ἂν (-) εἴπητε (you say), ‘Εὐλογημένος (Blessed is) ὁ (the One) ἐρχόμενος (coming) ἐν (in the) ὀνόματι (name) Κυρίου (of the Lord).’”

²⁸ Ὠργίσθη (He was angry) δὲ (however), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἤθελεν (was willing) εἰσελθεῖν (to go in). ὁ (-) δὲ (And) πατὴρ (the father) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἐξελθὼν (having gone), παρεκάλει (was begging) αὐτόν (him).

⁴¹ Καὶ (And) ὡς (as) ἤγγισεν (He drew near), ἰδὼν (having seen) τὴν (the) πόλιν (city), ἔκλαυσεν (He wept) ἐπ’ (over) αὐτήν (it), ⁴² λέγων (saying) ὅτι (-), “Εἰ (If) ἔγνως (you had known) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ταύτῃ (this), καὶ (even) σὺ (you), τὰ (the things) πρὸς (for) εἰρήνην (peace)! νῦν (Now) δὲ (however) ἐκρύβη (they are hidden) ἀπὸ (from) ὀφθαλμῶν (eyes) σου (of you).

⁴⁴ καὶ (and) ἐδαφιοῦσίν (will level to the ground) σε (you) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) σου (of you) ἐν (within) σοί (you), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἀφήσουσιν (will leave) λίθον (a stone) ἐπὶ (upon) λίθον (a stone) ἐν (within) σοί (you), ἀνθ’ (in place of) ὧν (which) οὐκ (not) ἔγνως (you knew) τὸν (the) καιρὸν (season) τῆς (the) ἐπισκοπῆς (of visitation) σου (of you).”

²⁸ στραφεὶς (Having turned) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) αὐτὰς (them), ‹ὁ› (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said), “Θυγατέρες (Daughters) Ἰερουσαλήμ (of Jerusalem), μὴ (not) κλαίετε (weep) ἐπ’ (for) ἐμέ (Me), πλὴν (but) ἐφ’ (for) ἑαυτὰς (yourselves) κλαίετε (weep), καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (for) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) ὑμῶν (of you).

¹⁴ ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) τὸν (the) Ἅγιον (Holy) καὶ (and) Δίκαιον (Righteous One) ἠρνήσασθε (denied), καὶ (and) ᾐτήσασθε (requested) ἄνδρα (a man), φονέα (a murderer), χαρισθῆναι (to be granted) ὑμῖν (to you); ¹⁵ τὸν (-) δὲ (and) Ἀρχηγὸν (the Author) τῆς (-) ζωῆς (of life) ἀπεκτείνατε (you killed), ὃν (whom) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἤγειρεν (has raised up) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead), οὗ (whereof) ἡμεῖς (we) μάρτυρές (witnesses) ἐσμεν (are).

⁵² τίνα (Which) τῶν (of the) προφητῶν (prophets) οὐκ (not) ἐδίωξαν (did persecute) οἱ (the) πατέρες (fathers) ὑμῶν (of you)? καὶ (And) ἀπέκτειναν (they killed) τοὺς (those) προκαταγγείλαντας (having foretold) περὶ (about) τῆς (the) ἐλεύσεως (coming) τοῦ (of the) Δικαίου (Righteous One), οὗ (of whom) νῦν (now) ὑμεῖς (you) προδόται (betrayers) καὶ (and) φονεῖς (murderers) ἐγένεσθε (have become),

⁵⁹ Καὶ (And as) ἐλιθοβόλουν (they were stoning) τὸν (-) Στέφανον (Stephen), ἐπικαλούμενον (he was calling out) καὶ (and) λέγοντα (saying), “Κύριε (Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), δέξαι (receive) τὸ (the) πνεῦμά (spirit) μου (of me).”

¹ Σαῦλος (Saul) δὲ (now) ἦν (was there) συνευδοκῶν (consenting) τῇ (to the) ἀναιρέσει (killing) αὐτοῦ (of him). Ἐγένετο (Arose) δὲ (then) ἐν (on) ἐκείνῃ (that) τῇ (-) ἡμέρᾳ (day) διωγμὸς (a persecution) μέγας (great) ἐπὶ (against) τὴν (the) ἐκκλησίαν (church) τὴν (which was) ἐν (in) Ἱεροσολύμοις (Jerusalem). πάντες (All) δὲ (then) διεσπάρησαν (were scattered) κατὰ (throughout) τὰς (the) χώρας (regions) τῆς (-) Ἰουδαίας (of Judea) καὶ (and) Σαμαρείας (Samaria), πλὴν (except) τῶν (the) ἀποστόλων (apostles).

²⁵ τὸ (-) δὲ (And) Ἁγὰρ (Hagar) Σινᾶ (Sinai) ὄρος (Mount) ἐστὶν (is), ἐν (in) τῇ (-) Ἀραβίᾳ (Arabia); συστοιχεῖ (she corresponds) δὲ (now) τῇ (to the) νῦν (present) Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem), δουλεύει (she is in slavery) γὰρ (for) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) τέκνων (children) αὐτῆς (of her). ²⁶ ἡ (-) δὲ (But) ἄνω (the above) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem) ἐλευθέρα (free) ἐστίν (is), ἥτις (who) ἐστὶν (is) μήτηρ (mother) ἡμῶν (of us).

⁸ καὶ (And) τὸ (the) πτῶμα (body) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐπὶ (will be upon) τῆς (the) πλατείας (street) τῆς (of) πόλεως (city) τῆς (the) μεγάλης (great), ἥτις (which) καλεῖται (is called) πνευματικῶς (figuratively) Σόδομα (Sodom) καὶ (and) Αἴγυπτος (Egypt), ὅπου (where) καὶ (also) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐσταυρώθη (was crucified).

⁹ Οἱ (The) δὲ (now) ὄχλοι (crowds) οἱ (-) προάγοντες (going before) αὐτὸν (Him) καὶ (and) οἱ (those) ἀκολουθοῦντες (following) ἔκραζον (were crying out), λέγοντες (saying): “Ὡσαννὰ (Hosanna) τῷ (to the) υἱῷ (Son) Δαυίδ (of David)!” “Εὐλογημένος (Blessed is) ὁ (the One) ἐρχόμενος (coming) ἐν (in) ὀνόματι (the name) Κυρίου (of the Lord)!” “Ὡσαννὰ (Hosanna) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ὑψίστοις (highest)!”

⁹ καὶ (And) οἱ (those) προάγοντες (going before) καὶ (and) οἱ (those) ἀκολουθοῦντες (following) ἔκραζον (were crying out): “Ὡσαννά (Hosanna)!” “Εὐλογημένος (Blessed is) ὁ (the One) ἐρχόμενος (coming) ἐν (in the) ὀνόματι (name) Κυρίου (of the Lord)!” ¹⁰ “Εὐλογημένη (Blessed) ἡ (is the) ἐρχομένη (coming) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (of the) πατρὸς (father) ἡμῶν (of us), Δαυίδ (David)!” “Ὡσαννὰ (Hosanna) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ὑψίστοις (highest)!”

⁵ Καί (And) τινων (as some) λεγόντων (were speaking) περὶ (about) τοῦ (the) ἱεροῦ (temple), ὅτι (that) λίθοις (with stones) καλοῖς (goodly) καὶ (and) ἀναθήμασιν (consecrated gifts) κεκόσμηται (it was adorned), εἶπεν (He said), ⁶ “Ταῦτα (As to these things) ἃ (which) θεωρεῖτε (you are beholding), ἐλεύσονται (will come) ἡμέραι (the days) ἐν (in) αἷς (which) οὐκ (not) ἀφεθήσεται (will be left) λίθος (stone) ἐπὶ (upon) λίθῳ (stone) ὃς (which) οὐ (not) καταλυθήσεται (will be thrown down).”

²⁴ καὶ (And) πεσοῦνται (they will fall) στόματι (by the edge) μαχαίρης (of the sword), καὶ (and) αἰχμαλωτισθήσονται (will be led captive) εἰς (into) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (nations); πάντα (all) καὶ (and) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem) ἔσται (will be) πατουμένη (trodden down) ὑπὸ (by) ἐθνῶν (the Gentiles), ἄχρι (until) οὗ (that) πληρωθῶσιν (are fulfilled) καιροὶ (the times) ἐθνῶν (of the Gentiles).

³⁴ ζητήσετέ (You will seek) με (Me) καὶ (and) οὐχ (not) εὑρήσετέ (will find) [με] (Me); καὶ (and) ὅπου (where) εἰμὶ (am) ἐγὼ (I), ὑμεῖς (you) οὐ (not) δύνασθε (are able) ἐλθεῖν (to come).” ³⁵ Εἶπον (Said) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) πρὸς (among) ἑαυτούς (themselves), “Ποῦ (Where) οὗτος (He) μέλλει (is about) πορεύεσθαι (to go) ὅτι (that) ἡμεῖς (we) οὐχ (not) εὑρήσομεν (will find) αὐτόν (Him)? μὴ (Not) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) Διασπορὰν (Dispersion) τῶν (among the) Ἑλλήνων (Greeks) μέλλει (is He about) πορεύεσθαι (to go) καὶ (and) διδάσκειν (to teach) τοὺς (the) Ἕλληνας (Greeks)? ³⁶ τίς (What) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) οὗτος (this) ὃν (that) εἶπεν (He said), ‘Ζητήσετέ (You will seek) με (Me), καὶ (and) οὐχ (not) εὑρήσετέ (will find) [με] (Me),’ καὶ (and) ‘Ὅπου (Where) εἰμὶ (am) ἐγὼ (I) ὑμεῖς (you) οὐ (not) δύνασθε (are able) ἐλθεῖν (to come)’?”

²² Ἔλεγον (Were saying) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), “Μήτι (Not) ἀποκτενεῖ (will He kill) ἑαυτὸν (Himself), ὅτι (that) λέγει (He says), ‘Ὅπου (Where) ἐγὼ (I) ὑπάγω (go), ὑμεῖς (you) οὐ (not) δύνασθε (are able) ἐλθεῖν (to come)’?” ²³ Καὶ (And) ἔλεγεν (He was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ὑμεῖς (You) ἐκ (from) τῶν (-) κάτω (below) ἐστέ (are); ἐγὼ (I) ἐκ (from) τῶν (-) ἄνω (above) εἰμί (am). ὑμεῖς (You) ἐκ (of) τούτου (this) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) ἐστέ (are), ἐγὼ (I) οὐκ (not) εἰμὶ (am) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (this). ²⁴ εἶπον (I said) οὖν (therefore) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) ἀποθανεῖσθε (you will die) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἁμαρτίαις (sins) ὑμῶν (of you); ἐὰν (if) γὰρ (for) μὴ (not) πιστεύσητε (you believe) ὅτι (that) ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am He), ἀποθανεῖσθε (you will die) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἁμαρτίαις (sins) ὑμῶν (of you).”

¹³ ἔλαβον (took) τὰ (the) βαΐα (branches) τῶν (of the) φοινίκων (palm trees) καὶ (and) ἐξῆλθον (went out) εἰς (to) ὑπάντησιν (meet) αὐτῷ (Him), καὶ (and) ἐκραύγαζον (were shouting): “Ὡσαννά (Hosanna)!” “Εὐλογημένος (Blessed is) ὁ (the One) ἐρχόμενος (coming) ἐν (in) ὀνόματι (the name) Κυρίου (of the Lord)!” “Καὶ (And) ὁ (the) Βασιλεὺς (King) τοῦ (-) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel)!”

³⁵ Εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (therefore) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἔτι (Yet) μικρὸν (a little) χρόνον (while) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) ἐν (with) ὑμῖν (you) ἐστιν (is). περιπατεῖτε (Walk) ὡς (while) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) ἔχετε (you have), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) σκοτία (darkness) ὑμᾶς (you) καταλάβῃ (might overtake). καὶ (And) ὁ (the one) περιπατῶν (walking) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) οὐκ (not) οἶδεν (knows) ποῦ (where) ὑπάγει (he is going). ³⁶ ὡς (While) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) ἔχετε (you have), πιστεύετε (believe) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) φῶς (light), ἵνα (so that) υἱοὶ (sons) φωτὸς (of light) γένησθε (you may become).” Ταῦτα (These things) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), καὶ (and) ἀπελθὼν (having gone away), ἐκρύβη (He was hidden) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτῶν (them).

¹⁹ ἔτι (Yet) μικρὸν (a little while) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) με (Me) οὐκέτι (no more) θεωρεῖ (sees), ὑμεῖς (you) δὲ (however) θεωρεῖτέ (see) με (Me); ὅτι (because) ἐγὼ (I) ζῶ (live), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ζήσετε (will live). ²⁰ ἐν (In) ἐκείνῃ (that) τῇ (-) ἡμέρᾳ (day) γνώσεσθε (will know) ὑμεῖς (you) ὅτι (that) ἐγὼ (I am) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Πατρί (Father) μου (of Me), καὶ (and) ὑμεῖς (you) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me), κἀγὼ (and I) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you). ²¹ ὁ (The one) ἔχων (having) τὰς (the) ἐντολάς (commandments) μου (of Me) καὶ (and) τηρῶν (keeping) αὐτὰς (them), ἐκεῖνός (he) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the one) ἀγαπῶν (loving) με (Me); ὁ (the one) δὲ (now) ἀγαπῶν (loving) με (Me), ἀγαπηθήσεται (will be loved) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me); κἀγὼ (and I) ἀγαπήσω (will love) αὐτὸν (him) καὶ (and) ἐμφανίσω (will show) αὐτῷ (to him) ἐμαυτόν (Myself).” ²² Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to Him) Ἰούδας (Judas), οὐχ (not) ὁ (-) Ἰσκαριώτης (Iscariot), “Κύριε (Lord), καὶ (then) τί (what) γέγονεν (has occurred) ὅτι (that) ἡμῖν (to us) μέλλεις (You are about) ἐμφανίζειν (to manifest) σεαυτὸν (Yourself), καὶ (and) οὐχὶ (not) τῷ (to the) κόσμῳ (world)?” ²³ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) ἀγαπᾷ (loves) με (Me), τὸν (the) λόγον (word) μου (of Me) τηρήσει (he will keep), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me) ἀγαπήσει (will love) αὐτόν (him), καὶ (and) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) ἐλευσόμεθα (we will come), καὶ (and) μονὴν (a home) παρ’ (with) αὐτῷ (him) ποιησόμεθα (will make).

¹³ Ἔστησάν (They set) τε (also) μάρτυρας (witnesses) ψευδεῖς (false), λέγοντας (saying), “Ὁ (The) ἄνθρωπος (man) οὗτος (this), οὐ (not) παύεται (does stop) λαλῶν (speaking) ῥήματα (words) κατὰ (against) τοῦ (the) τόπου (place) τοῦ (-) ἁγίου (holy) [τούτου] (this) καὶ (and) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law); ¹⁴ ἀκηκόαμεν (we have heard) γὰρ (for) αὐτοῦ (him) λέγοντος (saying) ὅτι (that) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ὁ (of) Ναζωραῖος (Nazareth) οὗτος (this) καταλύσει (will destroy) τὸν (the) τόπον (place) τοῦτον (this) καὶ (and) ἀλλάξει (will change) τὰ (the) ἔθη (customs) ἃ (that) παρέδωκεν (delivered) ἡμῖν (to us) Μωϋσῆς (Moses).”

⁹ ὅτι (that) ἐὰν (if) ὁμολογήσῃς (you confess) ἐν (with) τῷ (the) στόματί (mouth) σου (of you), “Κύριον (The Lord is) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus),” καὶ (and) πιστεύσῃς (believe) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) σου (of you), ὅτι (that) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) αὐτὸν (Him) ἤγειρεν (raised) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead), σωθήσῃ (you will be saved). ¹⁰ καρδίᾳ (In the heart) γὰρ (for) πιστεύεται (is belief) εἰς (unto) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness); στόματι (in the mouth) δὲ (now) ὁμολογεῖται (is confession) εἰς (unto) σωτηρίαν (salvation). ¹¹ Λέγει (Says) γὰρ (for) ἡ (the) γραφή (Scripture), “Πᾶς (Everyone) ὁ (-) πιστεύων (believing) ἐπ’ (on) αὐτῷ (Him) οὐ (not) καταισχυνθήσεται (will be put to shame).” ¹² οὐ (Not) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (there is) διαστολὴ (difference) Ἰουδαίου (Jew) τε (between) καὶ (and) Ἕλληνος (Greek); ὁ (-) γὰρ (for) αὐτὸς (the same) Κύριος (Lord) πάντων (of all) πλουτῶν (is rich) εἰς (toward) πάντας (all) τοὺς (those) ἐπικαλουμένους (calling) αὐτόν (Him). ¹³ “Πᾶς (Whoever) γὰρ (for) ὃς (that) ἂν (-) ἐπικαλέσηται (shall call upon) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) Κυρίου (of the Lord) σωθήσεται (will be saved).” ¹⁴ Πῶς (How) οὖν (then) ἐπικαλέσωνται (shall they call) εἰς (on Him) ὃν (whom) οὐκ (not) ἐπίστευσαν (they believed)? πῶς (How) δὲ (now) πιστεύσωσιν (shall they believe on Him) οὗ (of whom) οὐκ (not) ἤκουσαν (they have heard)? πῶς (How) δὲ (now) ἀκούσωσιν (shall they hear) χωρὶς (apart from) κηρύσσοντος (preaching)? ¹⁵ πῶς (How) δὲ (now) κηρύξωσιν (shall they preach) ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) ἀποσταλῶσιν (they are sent)? καθὼς* (As) γέγραπται (it has been written): “Ὡς (How) ὡραῖοι (beautiful) οἱ (the) πόδες (feet) τῶν (of those) εὐαγγελιζομένων (proclaiming good news) ‹τὰ› (of) ἀγαθά (good things)!”

¹⁵ ἀλλ’ (But) ἕως (unto) σήμερον (this day), ἡνίκα (when) ἂν (-) ἀναγινώσκηται (shall be read) Μωϋσῆς (Moses), κάλυμμα (a veil) ἐπὶ (over) τὴν (the) καρδίαν (heart) αὐτῶν (of them) κεῖται (lies). ¹⁶ ἡνίκα (Whenever) δὲ (however) ἐὰν (if) ἐπιστρέψῃ (one shall have turned) πρὸς (to) Κύριον (the Lord), περιαιρεῖται (is taken away) τὸ (the) κάλυμμα (veil). ¹⁷ Ὁ (The) δὲ (now) Κύριος (Lord) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμά (Spirit) ἐστιν (is); οὗ (where) δὲ (now) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) Κυρίου (of the Lord is), ἐλευθερία (there is freedom). ¹⁸ ἡμεῖς (We) δὲ (now) πάντες (all), ἀνακεκαλυμμένῳ (having been unveiled) προσώπῳ (in face), τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) Κυρίου (of the Lord) κατοπτριζόμενοι (beholding as in a mirror), τὴν (the) αὐτὴν (same) εἰκόνα (image) μεταμορφούμεθα (are being transformed into), ἀπὸ (from) δόξης (glory) εἰς (to) δόξαν (glory), καθάπερ (even as) ἀπὸ (from) Κυρίου (the Lord), Πνεύματος (the Spirit).
