¹⁹ This he said to show by what death he would glorify God. And after this he said to him, "Follow me."

³⁸ and he who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.

²¹ From that time Jesus began to show to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised on the third day. ²² Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him saying, "Never, Lord! ²⁸ Jesus said to them, "Truly I say to you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

³³ But when he had turned around and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter, and said, "Get behind me, Satan! ²² saying, "The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised." ²³ Then he said to them all, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. ²⁴ For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. ²⁵ For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits himself? ²⁶ For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.

²⁶ If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there my servant will be also. If anyone serves me, him my Father will honor.

³³ He said this to show by what death he was to die.

³⁶ Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus answered, "Where I am going you cannot follow me now; but you shall follow afterward." ³⁷ Peter said to him, "Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you."

³² This happened so that the words Jesus had spoken would be fulfilled, showing by what death he was going to die.

²² Jesus said to him, "If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me."

²⁰ as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be ashamed in anything, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.

¹¹ Whoever speaks is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belongs the glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. ¹² Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal which comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. ¹³ But rejoice that you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may also be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. ¹⁴ If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.

¹⁴ since I know that the putting aside of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.
