³⁹ That which was torn of beasts I did not bring unto thee; I bore the sin; thou didst require of my hand that which was stolen, whether by day or by night.

¹⁰ If a man delivers unto his neighbour an ass or an ox or a sheep or any beast to keep, and it dies or is hurt or driven away, no man seeing it, ¹¹ then shall an oath of the LORD be between them both, that he has not put his hand unto his neighbour’s goods, and the owner of it shall accept thereof, and he shall not make it good. ¹² And if it is stolen from him, he shall make restitution unto its owner. ¹³ If it is torn in pieces, then let him bring witness, and he shall not make good that which was torn.

³¹ And ye shall be holy men unto me; neither shall ye eat any flesh that is torn of beasts in the field; ye shall cast it to the dogs.

⁸ That which dies of itself or is torn by beasts, he shall not eat to defile himself therewith. I am the LORD.

³⁴ And David replied unto Saul, Thy slave was the pastor of his father’s sheep, and if a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock, ³⁵ I went out after him and smote him and delivered it out of his mouth; and if he arose against me, I caught him by his beard and smote him and slew him.

⁸ ¶ And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

¹² But the hireling, who is not a shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches them and scatters the sheep. ¹³ The hireling flees because he is a hireling, and the sheep do not belong to him.
