¹ It chaunsed in those dayes, when there was no kynge in Israell, that a certain Leuyte dwellyng on the syde of mount Ephraim, toke to wyfe a concubyne out of Bethlehem Iuda: ² whyche concubyne played the whore in his house, and went away from him, vnto her fathers house to Bethlehem Iuda, and there continued foure monethes. ³ And her husband arose & went after her, to speake frendelye vnto her, and to bringe her home againe, and his lad wyth him and a couple of Asses. And she brought him vnto her fathers house, and when the father of the damosell sawe him, he reioysed of his comyng. ⁴ And his father in lawe the damoselles father kepte him, that he aboade with him thre dayes, and so they ate and dranke and lodged there.

¹¹ And al the people that were in the gate, & the elders said: we are witnesses: the Lorde make the woman that is come into thine house lyke Rahel & Lea, which twayne dyd builde the house of Israel: that she maye do vertuously in Ephrathah, & be famouse in Bethlehem,

⁶ And therto her enemye Phenennah vexed her a good in castinge her in the thete, howe the Lorde had made her barren. ⁷ And so did she yere by yere as oft as she went vp to the house of the Lord. And so chafed her, wherfore Hannah wepte and ate not. ⁸ Then sayde Elkanah her husband to her: Hannah why wypeste thou? And why eatest thou not? & why is thyne herte so troubled? am not I better to the, then ten sonnes?

²⁰ And in processe of tyme she couceyued and bare a sonne, & called hys name Samuel: because she had asked hym of the Lord.

⁷ And Saul slue the Amaleckites from Heuila to Sur that lyeth before Egypte,

¹² The lorde be iudge betwene the and me, & the lorde aduenge me of the. But myne hand be not vpon the. ¹³ Accordyng to the old prouerbe, wickednesse shal procede out of the wicked. But myne hande be not vpon the. ¹⁴ After whom art thou come out, thou kynge of Israel? After whom chasest thou euen after a dead dogge, & after a flee. ¹⁵ The Lord be iudge, and iudge betwene the & me, & se & pleate my cause, and iudge me fre out of thine hande.

¹⁹ Now heare therfore (my lord king) the wordes of thy seruaunt Yf the lorde haue stered the vp against me, he shal smel the sauoure of sacryfyce. But & yf they be the children of men, cursed be they before the Lorde. For they haue cast me out from abyding in the enheritaunce of the Lorde, saying: hence & go serue other Goddes.

¹³ And Dauid toke hym mo concubynes and wyues out of Ierusalem, after he was come from Hebron, and mo sonnes and doughters were yet borne to Dauid.

¹⁶ And as the arcke of the Lorde came into the cytye of Dauid, Michol Sauls doughter loked thorowe a wyndowe, and saw Kynge Dauid spryng and daunse before the Lord, & therfore dyspysed hym in her hert.

³ And he had seuen hundred very Quenes and thre hundred concubynes whiche turned away his hert.

²² And so Iehoas the kynge remembred not the kyndenes which Iehoiada his father had done to hym, but slue his sonne. And when he dyed, he sayde: the Lorde se and require a reconynge.

⁶ Then sayde the Lorde vnto Sathan: lo, there hast thou hym in thy power, but spare his lyfe.

¹² A vayne body exalteth hym selfe, & the sonne of man is lyke a wyld asses foale.

⁴¹ who prouydeth meate for the rauen, when his younge ones crye vnto God, and fle aboute for wante of meate?

⁵ who letteth the wylde asse go fre, or who louseth the bondes of the mule? ⁶ Vnto whom I haue geuen the wyldernes to be their house, & the vntylled lande to be theyr dwellynge place. ⁷ That they maye geue no force for the multytude of people in the cytyes, neither regard the crying of the dryuer, ⁸ but seke their pasture aboute the mountaynes, and folow the grene grasse.

⁸ The Lord is iudge ouer the people: auenge me then (O Lord) accordynge to my ryghtuousnes and innocency.

²⁴ For he hath not despised nor abhorred the miserable estate of the poore: he hath not hid hys face fro me, but when I called vnto him he herde me.

²³ Awake lorde, and stande vp: auenge thou my cause, my God, and my lorde,

¹ Geue sentence vpon me (O God) and defende my cause agaynst the vnholy people: Oh delyuer me from the dysceatefull, and wycked man.

⁶ The tabernacles of the Edomites and Ismaelytes, the Moabytes and Hagarenes. ⁷ Gebal, Ammom, and Amalech: the Philistines with them that dwell at Tyre.

⁴¹ And gaue them ouer into the hand of the Heathen, and they that hated them, were lordes ouer them. ⁴² Their enemyes oppressed them, and had them in subieccion.

³ Lo, chyldren & the frute of the wombe are an heritage & gift, that commeth of the Lorde.

¹ To the chaunter, a Psalme of Dauid. O Lorde, thou searchest me out, and knowest me. ² Thou knowest my doune sittyng and myne vprysinge, thou vnderstandest my thoughtes a farre of. ³ Thou art about my path & about my bed and spyest out all my wayes. ⁴ For lo, there is not a worde in my tonge, but thou, O Lorde knowest it altogether. ⁵ Thou hast fashioned me behynde and before, and layed thyne hande vpon me. ⁶ Such knowlege is to wonderfull and excellent for me, I can not atteyne vnto it. ⁷ Whither shal I go then from thy sprete? or, whyther shall I go then frome thy presence? ⁸ If I clyme vp into heauen, thou art there if I go doune to hel, thou art there also. ⁹ If I take the wynges of the mornynge, & remayne in the vttermost parte of the sea: ¹⁰ Euen there also shall thy hande leade me, and thy right hand shall holde me. ¹¹ If I saye: peraduenture the darkenesse shall couer me, then shall my nyghte be turned to daye. ¹² Yea, the darkenesse is no darkenesse with the, but the nyght is as cleare as the day, the darkenesse and light are both a lyke.

²¹ For euery mannes waies are open in the sight of the Lorde, and he pondreth all their goynges.

²⁹ Pacyence is a token of wisdom, but wrath & hasty displasure is a token of folyshnesse.

¹ A soft answere putteth downe displeasure. but frowarde words prouoke vnto anger.

³ The eyes of the Lord loke on euery place, both vpon the good and badde.

¹⁷ Better is a messe of potage with loue, then a far oxe wyth euel wyll. ¹⁸ An angry man stereth vp strife, but he that is pacient stilleth discord.

⁸ He that oft times flytteth, is like a bird that forsaketh her nest.

¹⁹ A seruaunte wyll not be the better for wordes for thoughe he vnderstande, yet wyll he not regarde them,

²⁰ Such is the way also of a wife that breaketh wedlocke, which wipeth her mouth like as when she hath eaten, & sayeth. As for me, I haue done no harme. ²¹ Thorow thre thinges the earth is disquieted, & the fourthe may it not beare:

²³ thorow an ydle houswyfe, & thorow an handmayden that is heyre to her mastres.

⁴ If a principall sprete be geuen the to beare rule, be not negligente then in thine office: for so shall great wickednesse be put doun, as it were wt a medecine.

¹⁴ And therfore the Lorde shall geue you a token of hym selfe: Beholde, a vyrgyn shall conceyue and beare a sonne, and shall call hys name Emmanuel.

⁹ In their troubles he forsoke them not, but the aungel that went forthe from his presence delyuered them. Of very loue & kindnesse that he had vnto them, redemed he them. He hath borne them, and caryed them vp euer, sence the worlde beganne.

¹⁷ Commeth not this vnto the, because thou hast forsaken the Lorde thy God, euer sence he led the by the waye. ¹⁸ And what hast thou nowe to do in the strete of Egipte? to drincke foule water? Ether, what makest thou in the way to Assiria? To drincke water of the floud?

⁵ Zedekiah the kinge answered & sayde: lo he is in youre handes, for the king may denye you nothing.

³ He toke his brother by the hele, when he was yet in his mothers wombe: & in his strengthe he wrestled with God. ⁴ He stroue with the Aungel, and gat the victorye, so that he praid and desyred hym. He founde him at Bethel, & there he talked with vs. ⁵ Yet the Lorde God of Hostes, euen the Lorde hym selfe remembred him.

⁸ for thus sayeth the Lorde of hostes: Wyth a gloryous power hath he sent me out to the Heathen, which spoyled you: for who so toucheth you, shal touche the aple of his owne eye. ⁹ Beholde, I wyl lyfte vp myne hande ouer them, so that they shall be spoyled of those, whiche afore serued them: and ye shall knowe that the Lorde of hostes hath sente me.

¹ Beholde, I wil sende my messaunger, which shall prepare the way before me: & the Lord whome, ye woulde haue, shall sone come to hys temple, yea, euen the messenger of the couenaunt, whome ye longe for. Beholde he commeth, sayeth the Lord of hostes

²¹ She shall bryngforth a sonne, & thou shalt cal his name Iesus. For he shal saue his people from their sins. ²² All thys was done to fulfyll that whyche was spoken of the Lorde by the Prophet, saiynge: ²³ Bholde a mayde shall be wyth chylde, and shal bringe forth a sonne, and they shall call hys name Emanuell, whyche is by interpretation, God wyth vs.

⁷ And they had no childe: because that Elyzabeth was barren, and both were well striken in age.

¹³ And the aungel sayde vnto him: feare not Zacharye, for thy prayer is heard: And thy wyfe Elysabeth shall beare the a sonne, & thou shalt call his name Iohn,

³¹ Lo: thou shalt conceyue in thy wombe & shalt beare a sonne, and shalt call his name Iesus.

³⁶ And beholde thy cosyn Elyzabeth hath also conceyued a sonne in her age: & thys is her syxt moneth though she be called barren:

⁶³ And he axeth for writtyng tables, and wrote sayinge: his name is Ihon. And they maruayled al.

⁴⁰ And Martha was combred aboute muche seruynge, and stode and sayed: Mayster doest thou not care, that my syster hath lefte me to mynister alone? Byd her therfore, that she helpe me. ⁴¹ And Iesu aunswered & said vnto her: Martha, Martha, thou carest, and arte troubled aboute manye thinges,

¹⁸ No man hath sene God at anye tyme. The onlye begotten sonne which is in the bosome of the father, he hath declared hym.

³⁰ And when .xl. yeares were expired, ther appeared to him in the wyldernes of mount Sina, an aungel of the Lord in a flamme of fyre in a bushe. ³¹ When Moyses saw it he woundred at the sight. And as he drue near to behold, the voice of the Lord came vnto hym. ³² I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham the God of Isaac, and the God of Iacob? Moises trembled and durst not behold. ³³ Then sayde the Lorde to him: Put of thy shewes from thy fete, for the place where thou standeste, is holye grounde. ³⁴ I haue perfectly sene the affliction of the people, which is in Egipt and I haue heard their groninge, & am come doune to deliuer them. And nowe come, and I wyl sende the into Egypte. ³⁵ This Moyses whom they forsoke saiyng: who made the a ruler and a iudge, the same God sente both a ruler and a deliuerer, by the handes of the angell, whiche appeared to him in the bushe. ³⁶ And the same brought them out shewing woundres and signes in Egypte, & in the red sea, and in the wildernes .xl. yeares. ³⁷ This is that Moises which said vnto the children of Israell: A Prophet shall the Lorde your God rayse vp vnto you of youre brethren, lyke vnto me, him shal ye heare. ³⁸ This is he that was in the congregation, in the wyldernes wyth the aungell, whyche spake to hym in the mounte Syna, and wyth oure fathers. This man receiued the worde of lyfe to geue vnto vs,

⁶ These thinges brethren I haue described in myne owne person and Apollos for youre sakes, that ye myght learne by vs, that no man counte of him selfe beionde that, which is aboue written: that one swell not against another for anye mans cause.

⁴ Loue suffreth longe, and is curteous. Loue enuieth not. Loue doth not frowardelye, swelleth not, dealeth not dishonestlye, ⁵ seketh not her owne, is not prouoketh to anger, thinketh not euil,

²² For it is writen, that Abraham had two sonnes, the one by a bonde mayd the other by a fre woman. ²³ Yea and he whiche was of the bond woman, was borne after the fleshe: but he whiche was of the fre woman, was borne by promes. ²⁴ Whiche thynges betoken misterye. For these women are two testamentes the one from the mounte Syna, whiche gendreth to bondage whiche is Agar. ²⁵ For mounte Syna is called Agar in Arabia, and bordreth vpon the citie, which is nowe Hierusalem, and is in bondage with her chyldren.

²¹ submittinge your selues one to another in the feare of God.

⁵ Seruauntes be obedient vnto youre carnall maisters, wyth feare and tremblinge, in singlenes of youre hertes, as vnto Christe,

¹ Let as manye seruauntes as are vnder the yoke, count theyr maysters worthy of all honoure that the name of God and hys doctryne be not euyll spoken of. ² Se that they whiche haue beleuynge maysters, despyse them not because they are brethren: but so muche the rather do seruyce, for asmuch as they are beleuynge and beloued and partakers of the benefyte.

¹⁶ whiche onelye hath immortalitie, and dwelleth in lyght that no man can attayne, whome neuer man sawe, neyther can se, to whom be honoure and rule euerlastynge. Amen.

⁹ The seruauntes exhort to be obedient vnto theyr owne maysters, and to please in al thynges, not aunswerynge agayne,

¹⁸ Seruauntes obeye your maysters wyth al feare, not onelye yf they be good, and courteous: but also thoughe they be frowarde. ¹⁹ For it is thanke worthy yf a man for conscience towarde God endure griefe, suffering wrongfullye. ²⁰ For what prayse is it, yf when ye be buffeted for your faultes, ye take it pacientlye? But and yf when ye do well, ye suffre wrong and take it pacyently, then is there thanke wt God. ²¹ for here vnto verelye were ye called: for Christe also suffered for vs, leauynge vs an ensample that we shoulde folowe his steppes, ²² whiche dyd no synne, neyther was there gyle founde in hys mouth: ²³ which when he was reuyled, reuyled not agayne: when he suffered, he threatened not: but commytted the cause to him that iudgeth ryghtuously, ²⁴ which hys owne selfe bare oure synnes in hys body on the tree, that we shoulde be delyuered from synne, and shoulde lyue in ryghtuousnes. By whose strypes ye were healed. ²⁵ For ye were as shepe goynge astraye: but are nowe returned to the shepeherde and byshop of your soules.

⁷ Lykewyse ye men dwell wyth them accordynge to knoweledge, geuynge honoure vnto the wyfe, as vnto the weaker vessell, and as vnto them that are heyres also of the grace of lyfe, that youre prayers be not let.

⁵ Lykewyse ye yonger submit youre selues vnto the elder. Submit youre selues euerye man, one to another, knyt youre selues together in lowlines of mynde. For God resisteth the proude & geueth grace to humble. ⁶ Submit youre selues therfore vnder the myghty hande of God, that he maye exalte you, when the tyme is come.
