³⁸ and standing behind, at his feet, weeping, she first bathed his feet with her tears, and wiped them with the tresses of her hair. Then she kissed his feet and anointed them with the myrrh.

⁴ Let water, I pray thee, be brought and let your feet be washed; and refresh yourselves under this tree;

⁴ And when the messenger of the Lord had spoken these words to all the children of Israel, the people wept aloud. ⁵ So they called the name of that place, Wailing, and there they sacrificed to the Lord.

¹ Now when Esdras had prayed and made publick confession, weeping and praying before the house of God, there assembled to him a very great congregation, men, women and youths. Because the people wept and made loud lamentation,

⁸ let thy garments be always white; and let not oil be wanting on thy head:

³ and the fragrance of thine odours is above all perfumes; Thy name out poured oil, therefore the virgins have loved thee.

⁹ They set out with weeping; but I will bring them up with consolation, causing them to rest at fountains of water in a straight road; and in it they shall not be led astray, for I am become a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my first born.

¹⁸ I have heard the voice of Ephraim moaning, "Thou hast chastised me and I have been chastised. ¹² Now therefore saith the Lord your God, turn to me with your whole heart, and with fasting and with weeping and with mourning.

¹⁰ And when I pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and compassion, then will they look to him whom they pierced, and they will mourn for him with a mourning as for a beloved; and be afflicted with sorrow as for a first born.

⁴ Happy they who mourn; for they shall be comforted.

²¹ Happy ye, who hunger now, for you shall be satisfied! Happy ye, who weep now; for you will laugh!

⁴⁴ Then turning towards the woman, he said to Simon, Thou seest this woman? I came to thy house: Thou gavest me no water for my feet; but she with her tears hath washed my feet, and wiped them with the hairs of her head: ⁴⁵ Thou gavest me no kiss: but she, since I came in, hath not ceased kissing my feet. ⁴⁶ My head thou didst not anoint with oil: but she hath anointed my feet with myrrh.

⁶² And Peter went out and wept bitterly.

⁴ riseth from the supper and layeth aside his upper garments, and having taken a towel and girded himself, ⁵ he then poureth water into the basin and began to wash the feet of the disciples and wipe them with the towel, with which he was girded.

¹⁰ For godly sorrow operateth to produce a reformation for salvation, never to be repented of; but the sorrow of this world worketh death. ¹¹ For behold! this very thing; your being affected with a godly sorrow, what solicitude it hath wrought in you! nay, what apologies! what indignation! what fear! what longing desire! what zeal! what avengement! By your whole conduct you have shewn yourselves to be clear in this matter.

⁹ Be afflicted and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned into grief; and your joy into con fusion of face.
