And they came bringing to him a paralytic, carried by four of them.
Since they couldn't bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof over the place where he was. They dug through it and let down the mat on which the paralyzed man was lying.
When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven."
Now some scribes were sitting there, arguing among themselves,
"Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming; who can forgive sins but God alone?"
And Jesus knew, in his spirit, that they thus reasoned in themselves; and he said to them: Why reason ye thus in your heart?
Which is easier to say to the paralytic, Your sins are forgiven; or to say, Arise, and take up your mat, and walk?
But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins", he said to the paralytic,
"I tell you, get up, pick up your mat, and go home!"
