Judges 13 And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD ; and the LORD delivered them into the hand of the Philistines forty years.

2 H259 And there was a certain H376 man H6881 of Zorah H4940 , of the family H1839 of the Danites H8034 , whose name H4495 was Manoah H802 ; and his wife H6135 was barren H3205 , and bare [H8804] not.

3 H4397 And the angel H3068 of the LORD H7200 appeared [H8735] H802 unto the woman H559 , and said [H8799] H6135 unto her, Behold now, thou art barren H3205 , and bearest [H8804] H2029 not: but thou shalt conceive [H8804] H3205 , and bear [H8804] H1121 a son.

4 H8104 Now therefore beware [H8734] H8354 , I pray thee, and drink [H8799] H3196 not wine H7941 nor strong drink H398 , and eat [H8799] H2931 not any unclean thing :

5 H2030 For, lo, thou shalt conceive H3205 , and bear [H8802] H1121 a son H4177 ; and no razor H5927 shall come [H8799] H7218 on his head H5288 : for the child H5139 shall be a Nazarite H430 unto God H990 from the womb H2490 : and he shall begin [H8686] H3467 to deliver [H8687] H3478 Israel H3027 out of the hand H6430 of the Philistines.

6 H802 Then the woman H935 came [H8799] H559 and told [H8799] H376 her husband H559 , saying [H8800] H376 , A man H430 of God H935 came [H8804] H4758 unto me, and his countenance H4758 was like the countenance H4397 of an angel H430 of God H3966 , very H3372 terrible [H8737] H7592 : but I asked [H8804] H5046 him not whence he was, neither told [H8689] H8034 he me his name:

7 H559 But he said [H8799] H2030 unto me, Behold, thou shalt conceive H3205 , and bear [H8802] H1121 a son H7941 ; and now drink H3196 no wine H8354 nor strong drink [H8799] H398 , neither eat [H8799] H2932 any unclean H5288 thing : for the child H5139 shall be a Nazarite H430 to God H990 from the womb H3117 to the day H4194 of his death.

8 H4495 Then Manoah H6279 intreated [H8799] H3068 the LORD H559 , and said [H8799] H994 , O H136 my Lord H4994 , let H376 the man H430 of God H7971 which thou didst send [H8804] H935 come again [H8799] H3384 unto us, and teach [H8686] H6213 us what we shall do [H8799] H5288 unto the child H3205 that shall be born [H8795] .

9 H430 And God H8085 hearkened [H8799] H6963 to the voice H4495 of Manoah H4397 ; and the angel H430 of God H935 came again [H8799] H802 unto the woman H3427 as she sat [H8802] H7704 in the field H4495 : but Manoah H376 her husband was not with her.

10 H802 And the woman H4116 made haste [H8762] H7323 , and ran [H8799] H5046 , and shewed [H8686] H376 her husband H559 , and said [H8799] H376 unto him, Behold, the man H7200 hath appeared [H8738] H935 unto me, that came [H8804] H3117 unto me the other day.

11 H4495 And Manoah H6965 arose [H8799] H3212 , and went [H8799] H310 after H802 his wife H935 , and came [H8799] H376 to the man H559 , and said [H8799] H376 unto him, Art thou the man H1696 that spakest [H8765] H802 unto the woman H559 ? And he said [H8799] , I am .

12 H4495 And Manoah H559 said [H8799] H1697 , Now let thy words H935 come to pass [H8799] H4941 . How shall we order H5288 the child H4639 , and how shall we do unto him?

13 H4397 And the angel H3068 of the LORD H559 said [H8799] H4495 unto Manoah H559 , Of all that I said [H8804] H802 unto the woman H8104 let her beware [H8735] .

14 H398 She may not eat [H8799] H3318 of any thing that cometh [H8799] H1612 of the vine H8354 , neither let her drink [H8799] H3196 wine H7941 or strong drink H398 , nor eat [H8799] H2932 any unclean H6680 thing : all that I commanded [H8765] H8104 her let her observe [H8799] .

15 H4495 And Manoah H559 said [H8799] H4397 unto the angel H3068 of the LORD H6113 , I pray thee, let us detain [H8799] H6213 thee, until we shall have made ready [H8799] H1423 a kid H5795 H6440 for thee.

16 H4397 And the angel H3068 of the LORD H559 said [H8799] H4495 unto Manoah H6113 , Though thou detain [H8799] H398 me, I will not eat [H8799] H3899 of thy bread H518 : and if H6213 thou wilt offer [H8799] H5930 a burnt offering H5927 , thou must offer [H8686] H3068 it unto the LORD H4495 . For Manoah H3045 knew [H8804] H4397 not that he was an angel H3068 of the LORD.

17 H4495 And Manoah H559 said [H8799] H4397 unto the angel H3068 of the LORD H8034 , What is thy name H1697 , that when thy sayings H935 come to pass [H8799] H3513 we may do thee honour [H8765] ?

18 H4397 And the angel H3068 of the LORD H559 said [H8799] H7592 unto him, Why askest [H8799] H8034 thou thus after my name H6383 , seeing it is secret [H8675] H6383 ?

19 H4495 So Manoah H3947 took [H8799] H1423 a kid H5795 H4503 with a meat offering H5927 , and offered [H8799] H6697 it upon a rock H3068 unto the LORD H6213 : and the angel did [H8800] H6381 wondrously [H8688] H4495 ; and Manoah H802 and his wife H7200 looked on [H8802] .

20 H3851 For it came to pass, when the flame H5927 went up [H8800] H8064 toward heaven H4196 from off the altar H4397 , that the angel H3068 of the LORD H5927 ascended [H8799] H3851 in the flame H4196 of the altar H4495 . And Manoah H802 and his wife H7200 looked on [H8802] H5307 it, and fell on [H8799] H6440 their faces H776 to the ground.

21 H4397 But the angel H3068 of the LORD H3254 did no more [H8804] H7200 appear [H8736] H4495 to Manoah H802 and to his wife H4495 . Then Manoah H3045 knew [H8804] H4397 that he was an angel H3068 of the LORD.

22 H4495 And Manoah H559 said [H8799] H802 unto his wife H4191 , We shall surely [H8800] H4191 die [H8799] H7200 , because we have seen [H8804] H430 God.

23 H802 But his wife H559 said [H8799] H3863 unto him, If H3068 the LORD H2654 were pleased [H8804] H4191 to kill [H8687] H3947 us, he would not have received [H8804] H5930 a burnt offering H4503 and a meat offering H3027 at our hands H7200 , neither would he have shewed [H8689] H6256 us all these things, nor would as at this time H8085 have told [H8689] H2063 us such things as these.

24 H802 And the woman H3205 bare [H8799] H1121 a son H7121 , and called [H8799] H8034 his name H8123 Samson H5288 : and the child H1431 grew [H8799] H3068 , and the LORD H1288 blessed [H8762] him.

25 H7307 And the Spirit H3068 of the LORD H2490 began [H8686] H6470 to move him at times [H8800] H4264 in the camp H1835 of Dan H6881 between Zorah H847 and Eshtaol.

ERV⁽ⁱ⁾ ¹ And the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD delivered them into the hand of the Philistines forty years. ² And there was a certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren, and bare not. ³ And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son. ⁴ Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink no wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing: ⁵ for, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come upon his head: for the child shall be a Nazirite unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to save Israel out of the hand of the Philistines. ⁶ Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, A man of God came unto me, and his countenance was like the countenance of the angel of God, very terrible; and I asked him not whence he was, neither told he me his name: ⁷ but he said unto me, Behold, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing: for the child shall be a Nazirite unto God from the womb to the day of his death. ⁸ Then Manoah entreated the LORD, and said, Oh Lord, I pray thee, let the man of God whom thou didst send come again unto us, and teach us what we shall do onto the child that shall be born. ⁹ And God hearkened to the voice of Manoah; and the angel of God came again unto the woman as she sat in the field: but Manoah her husband was not with her. ¹⁰ And the woman made haste, and ran, and told her husband, and said unto him, Behold, the man hath appeared unto me, that came unto me the other day. ¹¹ And Manoah arose, and went after his wife, and came to the man, and said unto him, Art thou the man that spakest unto the woman? And he said, I am. ¹² And Manoah said, Now let thy words come to pass: what shall be the manner of the child, and [what shall be] his work? ¹³ And the angel of the LORD said unto Manoah, Of all that I said unto the woman let her beware. ¹⁴ She may not eat of any thing that cometh of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing; all that I commanded her let her observe. ¹⁵ And Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD, I pray thee, let us detain thee, that we may make ready a kid for thee. ¹⁶ And the angel of the LORD said unto Manoah, Though thou detain me, I will not eat of thy bread: and if thou wilt make ready a burnt offering, thou must offer it onto the LORD. For Manoah knew not that he was the angel of the LORD. ¹⁷ And Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD, What is thy name, that when thy words come to pass we may do thee honour? ¹⁸ And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Wherefore askest thou after my name, seeing it is wonderful? ¹⁹ So Manoah took the kid with the meal offering, and offered it upon the rock unto the LORD: and [the angel] did wondrously, and Manoah and his wife looked on. ²⁰ For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame of the altar: and Manoah and his wife looked on; and they fell on their faces to the ground. ²¹ But the angel of the LORD did no more appear to Manoah or to his wife. Then Manoah knew that he was the angel of the LORD. ²² And Manoah said unto his wife, We shall surely die, because we have seen God. ²³ But his wife said unto him, If the LORD were pleased to kill us, he would not have received a burnt offering and a meal offering at our hand, neither would he have shewed us all these things, nor would at this time have told us such things as these. ²⁴ And the woman bare a son, and called his name Samson: and the child grew, and the LORD blessed him. ²⁵ And the spirit of the LORD began to move him in Mahaneh-dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.
