Nehemiah 5

KJV_Strongs(i)
H1419 And there was a great H6818 cry H5971 of the people H802 and of their wives H251 against their brethren H3064 the Jews.
H3426 For there were H559 that said [H8802]   H1121 , We, our sons H1323 , and our daughters H7227 , are many H3947 : therefore we take up [H8799]   H1715 corn H398 for them, that we may eat [H8799]   H2421 , and live [H8799]  .
H3426 Some also there were H559 that said [H8802]   H6148 , We have mortgaged [H8802]   H7704 our lands H3754 , vineyards H1004 , and houses H3947 , that we might buy [H8799]   H1715 corn H7458 , because of the dearth.
H3426 There were H559 also that said [H8802]   H3867 , We have borrowed [H8804]   H3701 money H4428 for the king's H4060 tribute H7704 , and that upon our lands H3754 and vineyards.
H1320 Yet now our flesh H1320 is as the flesh H251 of our brethren H1121 , our children H1121 as their children H3533 : and, lo, we bring into bondage [H8802]   H1121 our sons H1323 and our daughters H5650 to be servants H1323 , and some of our daughters H3426 are H3533 brought unto bondage [H8737]   H410 already : neither is it in our power H3027   H312 to redeem them; for other men H7704 have our lands H3754 and vineyards.
H3966 And I was very H2734 angry [H8799]   H8085 when I heard [H8804]   H2201 their cry H1697 and these words.
H4427 Then I consulted [H8735]   H3820 with myself H7378 , and I rebuked [H8799]   H2715 the nobles H5461 , and the rulers H559 , and said [H8799]   H5378 unto them, Ye exact [H8801]   [H8678]   H5383   [H8802]   [H8675]   H5375   [H8802]   H4855 usury H376 , every one H251 of his brother H5414 . And I set [H8799]   H1419 a great H6952 assembly against them.
H559 And I said [H8799]   H1767 unto them, We after our ability H7069 have redeemed [H8804]   H251 our brethren H3064 the Jews H4376 , which were sold [H8737]   H1471 unto the heathen H4376 ; and will ye even sell [H8799]   H251 your brethren H4376 ? or shall they be sold [H8738]   H2790 unto us? Then held they their peace [H8686]   H4672 , and found [H8804]   H1697 nothing to answer .
H559 Also I said [H8799]   H2896 , It is not good H1697 that H6213 ye do [H8802]   H3212 : ought ye not to walk [H8799]   H3374 in the fear H430 of our God H2781 because of the reproach H1471 of the heathen H341 our enemies [H8802]  ?
H251 I likewise, and my brethren H5288 , and my servants H5383 , might exact [H8802]   H3701 of them money H1715 and corn H5800 : I pray you, let us leave off [H8799]   H4855 this usury.
H7725 Restore [H8685]   H3117 , I pray you, to them, even this day H7704 , their lands H3754 , their vineyards H2132 , their oliveyards H1004 , and their houses H3967 , also the hundredth H3701 part of the money H1715 , and of the corn H8492 , the wine H3323 , and the oil H5383 , that ye exact [H8802]   of them.
H559 Then said [H8799]   H7725 they, We will restore [H8686]   H1245 them, and will require [H8762]   H6213 nothing of them; so will we do [H8799]   H559 as thou sayest [H8802]   H7121 . Then I called [H8799]   H3548 the priests H7650 , and took an oath [H8686]   H6213 of them, that they should do [H8800]   H1697 according to this promise.
H5287 Also I shook [H8804]   H2684 my lap H559 , and said [H8799]   H430 , So God H5287 shake out [H8762]   H376 every man H1004 from his house H3018 , and from his labour H6965 , that performeth [H8686]   H1697 not this promise H5287 , even thus be he shaken out [H8803]   H7386 , and emptied H6951 . And all the congregation H559 said [H8799]   H543 , Amen H1984 , and praised [H8762]   H3068 the LORD H5971 . And the people H6213 did [H8799]   H1697 according to this promise.
H3117 Moreover from the time H6680 that I was appointed [H8765]   H6346 to be their governor H776 in the land H3063 of Judah H6242 , from the twentieth H8141 year H8147 even unto the two H7970 and thirtieth H8141 year H783 of Artaxerxes H4428 the king H8147 , that is, twelve H6240   H8141 years H251 , I and my brethren H398 have not eaten [H8804]   H3899 the bread H6346 of the governor.
H7223 But the former H6346 governors H6440 that had been before H3513 me were chargeable [H8689]   H5971 unto the people H3947 , and had taken [H8799]   H3899 of them bread H3196 and wine H310 , beside H705 forty H8255 shekels H3701 of silver H1571 ; yea, even H5288 their servants H7980 bare rule [H8804]   H5971 over the people H6213 : but so did [H8804]   H6440 not I, because H3374 of the fear H430 of God.
H2388 Yea, also I continued [H8689]   H4399 in the work H2346 of this wall H7069 , neither bought [H8804]   H7704 we any land H5288 : and all my servants H6908 were gathered [H8803]   H4399 thither unto the work.
H7979 Moreover there were at my table H3967 an hundred H2572 and fifty H376   H3064 of the Jews H5461 and rulers H935 , beside those that came [H8802]   H1471 unto us from among the heathen H5439 that are about us.
H6213 Now that which was prepared [H8737]   H3117 for me daily H259 was one H7794 ox H8337 and six H1305 choice [H8803]   H6629 sheep H6833 ; also fowls H6213 were prepared [H8738]   H6235 for me, and once in ten H3117 days H7235 store [H8687]   H3196 of all sorts of wine H5973 : yet for all H1245 this required [H8765]   H3899 not I the bread H6346 of the governor H5656 , because the bondage H3513 was heavy [H8804]   H5971 upon this people.
H2142 Think [H8798]   H430 upon me, my God H2896 , for good H6213 , according to all that I have done [H8804]   H5971 for this people.
ERV(i) 1 Then there arose a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews. 2 For there were that said, We, our sons and our daughters, are many: let us get corn, that we may eat and live. 3 Some also there were that said, We are mortgaging our fields, and our vineyards, and our houses: let us get corn, because of the dearth. 4 There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute [upon] our fields and our vineyards. 5 Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought into bondage [already]: neither is it in our power to help it; for other men have our fields and our vineyards. 6 And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words. 7 Then I consulted with myself, and contended with the nobles and the rulers, and said unto them, Ye exact usury, every one of his brother. And I held a great assembly against them. 8 And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were sold unto the heathen; and would ye even sell your brethren, and should they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found never a word. 9 Also I said, The thing that ye do is not good: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God, because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies? 10 And I likewise, my brethren and my servants, do lend them money and corn on usury. I pray you, let us leave off this usury. 11 Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their fields, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the corn, the wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them. 12 Then said they, We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do, even as thou sayest. Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise. 13 Also I shook out my lap, and said, So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labour, that performeth not this promise; even thus be he shaken out, and emptied. And all the congregation said, Amen, and praised the LORD. And the people did according to this promise. 14 Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even unto the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, [that is], twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor. 15 But the former governors that were before me were chargeable unto the people, and took of them bread and wine, beside forty shekels of silver; yea, even their servants bare rule over the people: but so did not I, because of the fear of God. 16 Yea, also I continued in the work of this wall, neither bought we any land: and all my servants were gathered thither unto the work. 17 Moreover there were at my table of the Jews and the rulers an hundred and fifty men, beside those that came unto us from among the heathen that were round about us. 18 Now that which was prepared for one day was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine: yet for all this I demanded not the bread of the governor, because the bondage was heavy upon this people. 19 Remember unto me, O my God, for good, all that I have done for this people.
