Deuteronomy 20 When thou goest out to battle against thine enemies , and seest horses , and chariots , and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the LORD thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

2 H7126 And it shall be, when ye are come nigh [H8800] H4421 unto the battle H3548 , that the priest H5066 shall approach [H8738] H1696 and speak [H8765] H5971 unto the people,

3 H559 And shall say [H8804] H8085 unto them, Hear [H8798] H3478 , O Israel H7131 , ye approach H3117 this day H4421 unto battle H341 against your enemies [H8802] H3824 : let not your hearts H7401 faint [H8735] H3372 , fear [H8799] H2648 not, and do not tremble [H8799] H6206 , neither be ye terrified [H8799] H6440 because of them;

4 H3068 For the LORD H430 your God H1980 is he that goeth [H8802] H3898 with you, to fight [H8736] H341 for you against your enemies [H8802] H3467 , to save [H8687] you.

5 H7860 And the officers [H8802] H1696 shall speak [H8765] H5971 unto the people H559 , saying [H8800] H376 , What man H1129 is there that hath built [H8804] H2319 a new H1004 house H2596 , and hath not dedicated [H8804] H3212 it? let him go [H8799] H7725 and return [H8799] H1004 to his house H4191 , lest he die [H8799] H4421 in the battle H312 , and another H376 man H2596 dedicate [H8799] it.

6 H376 And what man H5193 is he that hath planted [H8804] H3754 a vineyard H2490 , and hath not yet eaten [H8765] H3212 of it? let him also go [H8799] H7725 and return [H8799] H1004 unto his house H4191 , lest he die [H8799] H4421 in the battle H312 , and another H376 man H2490 eat [H8762] of it.

7 H376 And what man H781 is there that hath betrothed [H8765] H802 a wife H3947 , and hath not taken [H8804] H3212 her? let him go [H8799] H7725 and return [H8799] H1004 unto his house H4191 , lest he die [H8799] H4421 in the battle H312 , and another H376 man H3947 take [H8799] her.

8 H7860 And the officers [H8802] H1696 shall speak [H8763] H3254 further [H8804] H5971 unto the people H559 , and they shall say [H8804] H376 , What man H3373 is there that is fearful H7390 and fainthearted H3824 H3212 ? let him go [H8799] H7725 and return [H8799] H1004 unto his house H251 , lest his brethren's H3824 heart H4549 faint [H8735] H3824 as well as his heart.

9 H7860 And it shall be, when the officers [H8802] H3615 have made an end [H8763] H1696 of speaking [H8763] H5971 unto the people H6485 , that they shall make [H8804] H8269 captains H6635 of the armies H7218 to lead H5971 the people.

10 H7126 When thou comest nigh [H8799] H5892 unto a city H3898 to fight [H8736] H7121 against it, then proclaim [H8804] H7965 peace unto it.

11 H6030 And it shall be, if it make thee answer [H8799] H7965 of peace H6605 , and open [H8804] H5971 unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people H4672 that is found [H8737] H4522 therein shall be tributaries H5647 unto thee, and they shall serve [H8804] thee.

12 H7999 And if it will make no peace [H8686] H6213 with thee, but will make [H8804] H4421 war H6696 against thee, then thou shalt besiege [H8804] it:

13 H3068 And when the LORD H430 thy God H5414 hath delivered [H8804] H3027 it into thine hands H5221 , thou shalt smite [H8689] H2138 every male H6310 thereof with the edge H2719 of the sword:

14 H802 But the women H2945 , and the little ones H929 , and the cattle H5892 , and all that is in the city H7998 , even all the spoil H962 thereof, shalt thou take [H8799] H398 unto thyself; and thou shalt eat [H8804] H7998 the spoil H341 of thine enemies [H8802] H3068 , which the LORD H430 thy God H5414 hath given [H8804] thee.

15 H6213 Thus shalt thou do [H8799] H5892 unto all the cities H3966 which are very H7350 far off H2007 from thee, which H5892 are not of the cities H1471 of these nations.

16 H5892 But of the cities H5971 of these people H3068 , which the LORD H430 thy God H5414 doth give [H8802] H5159 thee for an inheritance H2421 , thou shalt save alive [H8762] H5397 nothing that breatheth:

17 H2763 But thou shalt utterly [H8687] H2763 destroy [H8686] H2850 them; namely, the Hittites H567 , and the Amorites H3669 , the Canaanites H6522 , and the Perizzites H2340 , the Hivites H2983 , and the Jebusites H3068 ; as the LORD H430 thy God H6680 hath commanded [H8765] thee:

18 H3925 That they teach [H8762] H6213 you not to do [H8800] H8441 after all their abominations H6213 , which they have done [H8804] H430 unto their gods H2398 ; so should ye sin [H8804] H3068 against the LORD H430 your God.

19 H6696 When thou shalt besiege [H8799] H5892 a city H7227 a long H3117 time H3898 , in making war [H8736] H8610 against it to take [H8800] H7843 it, thou shalt not destroy [H8686] H6086 the trees H5080 thereof by forcing [H8800] H1631 an axe H398 against them: for thou mayest eat [H8799] H3772 of them, and thou shalt not cut them down [H8799] H6086 (for the tree H7704 of the field H120 is man's H935 life) to employ [H8800] H6440 them in the siege H4692 :

20 H6086 Only the trees H3045 which thou knowest [H8799] H6086 that they be not trees H3978 for meat H7843 , thou shalt destroy [H8686] H3772 and cut them down [H8804] H1129 ; and thou shalt build [H8804] H4692 bulwarks H5892 against the city H6213 that maketh [H8802] H4421 war H3381 with thee, until it be subdued [H8800] .

ERV⁽ⁱ⁾ ¹ When thou goest forth to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, [and] a people more than thou, thou shalt not be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. ² And it shall be, when ye draw nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people, ³ and shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye draw nigh this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your heart faint; fear not, nor tremble, neither be ye affrighted at them; ⁴ for the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you. ⁵ And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it. ⁶ And what man is there that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not used the fruit thereof? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man use the fruit thereof. ⁷ And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her. ⁸ And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and fainthearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren’s heart melt as his heart. ⁹ And it shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking unto the people, that they shall appoint captains of hosts at the head of the people. ¹⁰ When thou drawest nigh unto a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it. ¹¹ And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that is found therein shall become tributary unto thee, and shall serve thee. ¹² And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou shalt besiege it: ¹³ and when the LORD thy God delivereth it into thine hand, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword: ¹⁴ but the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take for a prey unto thyself; and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which the LORD thy God hath given thee. ¹⁵ Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations. ¹⁶ But of the cities of these peoples, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth: ¹⁷ but thou shalt utterly destroy them; the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee: ¹⁸ that they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods; so should ye sin against the LORD your God. ¹⁹ When thou shalt besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by wielding an axe against them; for thou mayest eat of them, and thou shalt not cut them down; for is the tree of the field man, that it should be besieged of thee? ²⁰ Only the trees which thou knowest that they be not trees for meat, thou shalt destroy and cut them down; and thou shalt build bulwarks against the city that maketh war with thee, until it fall.
