  1 H40 And Abimelech H1121 the son H3378 of Jerubbaal H3212 went H7927 to Shechem H517 unto his mother's H251 brothers, H1696 and talked H4940 with them, and with all the family H1004 of the house H517 of his mother's H1 father, H559 saying,
  2 H1696 Speak, H241 I pray you, in the ears H1167 of all the men H7927 of Shechem, H2896 Whether is better H1121 for you, either that all the sons H3378 of Jerubbaal, H7657 which are sixty and ten H376 persons, H4910 reign H259 over you, or that one H4910 reign H2142 over you? remember H6106 also that I am your bone H1320 and your flesh.
  3 H517 And his mother's H251 brothers H1696 spoke H241 of him in the ears H1167 of all the men H7927 of Shechem H1697 all these words: H3820 and their hearts H5186 inclined H310 to follow H40 Abimelech; H559 for they said, H251 He is our brother.
  4 H5414 And they gave H7657 him sixty and ten H3701 pieces of silver H1004 out of the house H1170 of Baal–berith, H40 with which Abimelech H7936 hired H7386 vain H6348 and light H582 persons, H3212 which followed H310 him.
  5 H935 And he went H1 unto his father's H1004 house H6084 at Ophrah, H2026 and killed H251 his brothers H1121 the sons H3378 of Jerubbaal, H7657 being sixty and ten H376 persons, H259 upon one H68 stone: H3147 nevertheless yet Jotham H6996 the youngest H1121 son H3378 of Jerubbaal H3498 was left; H2244 for he hid himself.
  6 H1167 And all the men H7927 of Shechem H622 gathered together, H1004 and all the house H4407 of Millo, H3212 and went, H4427 and made H40 Abimelech H4428 king, H436 by the plain H5324 of the pillar H7927 that was in Shechem.
  7 H5046 And when they told H3147 it to Jotham, H3212 he went H5975 and stood H7218 in the top H2022 of mountain H1630 Gerizim, H5375 and lifted up H6963 his voice, H7121 and cried, H559 and said H8085 unto them, Listen H1167 unto me, you men H7927 of Shechem, H430 that God H8085 may listen unto you.
  8 H6086 The trees H1980 went forth H4886 on a time to anoint H4428 a king H559 over them; and they said H2132 unto the olive tree, H4427 Reign you over us.
  9 H2132 But the olive tree H559 said H2308 unto them, Should I leave H1880 my fatness, H3513 with which by me they honor H430 God H582 and man, H1980 and go H5128 to be promoted H6086 over the trees?
  10 H6086 And the trees H559 said H8384 to the fig tree, H3212 Come H4427 you, and reign over us.
  11 H8384 But the fig tree H559 said H2308 unto them, Should I forsake H4987 my sweetness, H2896 and my good H8570 fruit, H1980 and go H5128 to be promoted H6086 over the trees?
  12 H559 Then said H6086 the trees H1612 unto the vine, H3212 Come H4427 you, and reign over us.
  13 H1612 And the vine H559 said H2308 unto them, Should I leave H8492 my wine, H8055 which cheers H430 God H582 and man, H1980 and go H5128 to be promoted H6086 over the trees?
  14 H559 Then said H6086 all the trees H329 unto the bramble, H3212 Come H4427 you, and reign over us.
  15 H329 And the bramble H559 said H6086 unto the trees, H571 If in truth H4886 you anoint H4428 me king H935 over you, then come H2620 and put your trust H6738 in my shadow: H784 and if not, let fire H3318 come out H329 of the bramble, H398 and devour H730 the cedars H3844 of Lebanon.
  16 H6213 Now therefore, if you have done H571 truly H8549 and sincerely, H40 in that you have made Abimelech H4427 king, H6213 and if you have dealt H2896 well H3378 with Jerubbaal H1004 and his house, H6213 and have done H1576 unto him according to the deserving H3027 of his hands;
  17 H1 (For my father H3898 fought H7993 for you, and risked H5315 his life H5048 far, H5337 and delivered H3027 you out of the hand H4080 of Midian:
  18 H6965 And you are risen up H1 against my father's H1004 house H3117 this day, H2026 and have slain H1121 his sons, H7657 sixty and ten H376 persons, H259 upon one H68 stone, H40 and have made Abimelech, H1121 the son H519 of his maidservant, H4427 king H1167 over the men H7927 of Shechem, H251 because he is your brother;)
  19 H6213 If you then have dealt H571 truly H8549 and sincerely H3378 with Jerubbaal H1004 and with his house H3117 this day, H8055 then rejoice H40 you in Abimelech, H8055 and let him also rejoice in you:
  20 H784 But if not, let fire H3318 come out H40 from Abimelech, H398 and devour H1167 the men H7927 of Shechem, H1004 and the house H4407 of Millo; H784 and let fire H3318 come out H1167 from the men H7927 of Shechem, H1004 and from the house H4407 of Millo, H398 and devour H40 Abimelech.
  21 H3147 And Jotham H1272 ran away, H5127 and fled, H3212 and went H876 to Beer, H3427 and lived H6440 there, for fear H40 of Abimelech H251 his brother.
  22 H40 When Abimelech H7786 had reigned H7969 three H8141 years H3478 over Israel,
  23 H430 Then God H7971 sent H7451 an evil H7307 spirit H40 between Abimelech H1167 and the men H7927 of Shechem; H1167 and the men H7927 of Shechem H898 dealt treacherously H40 with Abimelech:
  24 H2555 That the cruelty H7657 done to the sixty and ten H1121 sons H3378 of Jerubbaal H935 might come, H1818 and their blood H7760 be laid H40 upon Abimelech H251 their brother, H2026 which killed H1167 them; and upon the men H7927 of Shechem, H2388 which aided H2026 him in the killing H251 of his brothers.
  25 H1167 And the men H7927 of Shechem H7760 set H693 liers in wait H7218 for him in the top H2022 of the mountains, H1497 and they robbed H5674 all that came H1870 along that way H5046 by them: and it was told H40 Abimelech.
  26 H1603 And Gaal H1121 the son H5651 of Ebed H935 came H251 with his brothers, H5674 and went over H7927 to Shechem: H1167 and the men H7927 of Shechem H982 put their confidence in him.
  27 H3318 And they went out H7704 into the fields, H1219 and gathered H3754 their vineyards, H1869 and trod H6213 the grapes, and made H1974 merry, H935 and went H1004 into the house H430 of their god, H398 and did eat H8354 and drink, H7043 and cursed H40 Abimelech.
  28 H1603 And Gaal H1121 the son H5651 of Ebed H559 said, H40 Who is Abimelech, H7927 and who is Shechem, H5647 that we should serve H1121 him? is not he the son H3378 of Jerubbaal? H2083 and Zebul H6496 his officer? H5647 serve H582 the men H2544 of Hamor H1 the father H7927 of Shechem: H5647 for why should we serve him?
  29 H5971 And would to God this people H5414 were under H3027 my hand! H5493 then would I remove H40 Abimelech. H559 And he said H40 to Abimelech, H7235 Increase H6635 your army, H3318 and come out.
  30 H2083 And when Zebul H8269 the ruler H5892 of the city H8085 heard H1697 the words H1603 of Gaal H1121 the son H5651 of Ebed, H639 his anger H2734 was kindled.
  31 H7971 And he sent H4397 messengers H40 unto Abimelech H8649 privately, H559 saying, H1603 Behold, Gaal H1121 the son H5651 of Ebed H251 and his brothers H935 be come H7927 to Shechem; H6696 and, behold, they fortify H5892 the city against you.
  32 H6965 Now therefore up H3915 by night, H5971 you and the people H693 that is with you, and lie in wait H7704 in the field:
  33 H1242 And it shall be, that in the morning, H8121 as soon as the sun H2224 is up, H7925 you shall rise early, H6584 and set H5892 upon the city: H5971 and, behold, when he and the people H3318 that is with him come out H6213 against you, then may you do H3027 to them as you H4672 shall find occasion.
  34 H40 And Abimelech H6965 rose up, H5971 and all the people H3915 that were with him, by night, H693 and they laid wait H7927 against Shechem H702 in four H7218 companies.
  35 H1603 And Gaal H1121 the son H5651 of Ebed H3318 went out, H5975 and stood H6607 in the entering H8179 of the gate H5892 of the city: H40 and Abimelech H6965 rose up, H5971 and the people H3993 that were with him, from lying in wait.
  36 H1603 And when Gaal H7200 saw H5971 the people, H559 he said H2083 to Zebul, H3381 Behold, there come H5971 people H3381 down H7218 from the top H2022 of the mountains. H2083 And Zebul H559 said H7200 unto him, You see H6738 the shadow H2022 of the mountains H582 as if they were men.
  37 H1603 And Gaal H1696 spoke H3254 again H559 and said, H3381 See there come H5971 people H3381 down H2872 by the middle H776 of the land, H259 and another H7218 company H935 come H436 along by the plain H1870 of H6049 Meonenim.
  38 H559 Then said H2083 Zebul H645 unto him, Where is now H6310 your mouth, H559 with which you said, H40 Who is Abimelech, H5647 that we should serve H5971 him? is not this the people H3988 that you have despised? H3318 go out, H4994 I pray now, H3898 and fight with them.
  39 H1603 And Gaal H3318 went out H6440 before H1167 the men H7927 of Shechem, H3898 and fought H40 with Abimelech.
  40 H40 And Abimelech H7291 chased H5127 him, and he fled H6440 before H7227 him, and many H5307 were overthrown H2491 and wounded, H6607 even unto the entering H8179 of the gate.
  41 H40 And Abimelech H3427 lived H725 at Arumah: H2083 and Zebul H1644 thrust out H1603 Gaal H251 and his brothers, H3427 that they should not live H7927 in Shechem.
  42 H4283 And it came to pass on the morrow, H5971 that the people H3318 went out H7704 into the field; H5046 and they told H40 Abimelech.
  43 H3947 And he took H5971 the people, H2673 and divided H7969 them into three H7218 companies, H693 and laid wait H7704 in the field, H7200 and looked, H5971 and, behold, the people H3318 were come forth H5892 out of the city; H6965 and he rose up H5221 against them, and struck them.
  44 H40 And Abimelech, H7218 and the company H6584 that was with him, rushed forward, H5975 and stood H6607 in the entering H8179 of the gate H5892 of the city: H8147 and the two H7218 other companies H6584 ran upon H7704 all the people that were in the fields, H5221 and killed them.
  45 H40 And Abimelech H3898 fought H5892 against the city H3117 all that day; H3920 and he took H5892 the city, H2026 and killed H5971 the people H5422 that was in it, and beat down H5892 the city, H2232 and sowed H4417 it with salt.
  46 H1167 And when all the men H4026 of the tower H7927 of Shechem H8085 heard H935 that, they entered H6877 into an hold H1004 of the house H410 of the god H1286 Berith.
  47 H5046 And it was told H40 Abimelech, H1167 that all the men H4026 of the tower H7927 of Shechem H6908 were gathered together.
  48 H40 And Abimelech H5927 gat him up H2022 to mountain H6756 Zalmon, H5971 he and all the people H40 that were with him; and Abimelech H3947 took H7134 an axe H3027 in his hand, H3772 and cut down H7754 a bough H6086 from the trees, H5375 and took H7760 it, and laid H7926 it on his shoulder, H559 and said H5971 unto the people H7200 that were with him, What you have seen H6213 me do, H4116 make hurry, H6213 and do H3644 as I have done.
  49 H5971 And all the people H3772 likewise cut down H376 every man H7754 his bough, H3212 and followed H40 Abimelech, H7760 and put H6877 them to the hold, H3341 and set H6877 the hold H784 on fire H582 upon them; so that all the men H4026 of the tower H7927 of Shechem H4191 died H505 also, about a thousand H376 men H802 and women.
  50 H3212 Then went H40 Abimelech H8405 to Thebez, H2583 and encamped H8405 against Thebez, H3920 and took it.
  51 H5797 But there was a strong H4026 tower H8432 inside H5892 the city, H5127 and there fled H582 all the men H802 and women, H1167 and all they H5892 of the city, H5462 and shut H5927 it to them, and went up H1406 to the top H4026 of the tower.
  52 H40 And Abimelech H935 came H4026 unto the tower, H3898 and fought H5066 against it, and went next H6607 to the door H4026 of the tower H8313 to burn H784 it with fire.
  53 H259 And a certain H802 woman H7993 cast H6400 a piece H7393 of a millstone H40 upon Abimelech's H7218 head, H7533 and broke H1538 his skull.
  54 H7121 Then he called H4120 hastily H5288 unto the young man H5375 his armor bearer, H559 and said H8025 unto him, Draw H2719 your sword, H4191 and kill H559 me, that men say H802 not of me, A woman H2026 killed H5288 him. And his young man H1856 thrust him through, H4191 and he died.
  55 H376 And when the men H3478 of Israel H7200 saw H40 that Abimelech H4191 was dead, H3212 they departed H376 every man H4725 unto his place.
  56 H430 Thus God H7725 turned back H7451 the wickedness H40 of Abimelech, H6213 which he did H1 unto his father, H2026 in slaying H7657 his seventy H251 brothers:
  57 H7451 And all the evil H582 of the men H7927 of Shechem H430 did God H7725 turn back H7218 upon their heads: H935 and upon them came H7045 the curse H3147 of Jotham H1121 the son H3378 of Jerubbaal.
