Joshua 8

KJV_Strongs(i)
H3068 And the LORD H559 said [H8799]   H3091 unto Joshua H3372 , Fear [H8799]   H2865 not, neither be thou dismayed [H8735]   H3947 : take [H8798]   H5971 all the people H4421 of war H6965 with thee, and arise [H8798]   H5927 , go up [H8798]   H5857 to Ai H7200 : see [H8798]   H5414 , I have given [H8804]   H3027 into thy hand H4428 the king H5857 of Ai H5971 , and his people H5892 , and his city H776 , and his land:
H6213 And thou shalt do [H8804]   H5857 to Ai H4428 and her king H6213 as thou didst [H8804]   H3405 unto Jericho H4428 and her king H7998 : only the spoil H929 thereof, and the cattle H962 thereof, shall ye take for a prey [H8799]   H7760 unto yourselves: lay [H8798]   H693 thee an ambush [H8802]   H5892 for the city H310 behind it.
H3091 So Joshua H6965 arose [H8799]   H5971 , and all the people H4421 of war H5927 , to go up [H8800]   H5857 against Ai H3091 : and Joshua H977 chose out [H8799]   H7970 thirty H505 thousand H1368 mighty H376 men H2428 of valour H7971 , and sent them away [H8799]   H3915 by night.
H6680 And he commanded [H8762]   H559 them, saying [H8800]   H7200 , Behold [H8798]   H693 , ye shall lie in wait [H8802]   H5892 against the city H310 , even behind H5892 the city H7368 : go H3966 not very H7368 far [H8686]   H5892 from the city H3559 , but be ye all ready [H8737]  :
H5971 And I, and all the people H7126 that are with me, will approach [H8799]   H5892 unto the city H3318 : and it shall come to pass, when they come out [H8799]   H7125 against [H8800]   H7223 us, as at the first H5127 , that we will flee [H8804]   H6440 before them,
H3318 (For they will come out [H8804]   H310 after H5423 us) till we have drawn [H8687]   H5892 them from the city H559 ; for they will say [H8799]   H5127 , They flee [H8801]   H6440 before H7223 us, as at the first H5127 : therefore we will flee [H8804]   H6440 before them.
H6965 Then ye shall rise up [H8799]   H693 from the ambush [H8802]   H3423 , and seize [H8689]   H5892 upon the city H3068 : for the LORD H430 your God H5414 will deliver [H8804]   H3027 it into your hand.
H8610 And it shall be, when ye have taken [H8800]   H5892 the city H3341 , that ye shall set [H8686]   H5892 the city H784 on fire H1697 : according to the commandment H3068 of the LORD H6213 shall ye do [H8799]   H7200 . See [H8798]   H6680 , I have commanded [H8765]   you.
H3091 Joshua H7971 therefore sent them forth [H8799]   H3212 : and they went [H8799]   H3993 to lie in ambush H3427 , and abode [H8799]   H1008 between Bethel H5857 and Ai H3220 , on the west side H5857 of Ai H3091 : but Joshua H3885 lodged [H8799]   H3915 that night H8432 among H5971 the people.
H3091 And Joshua H7925 rose up early [H8686]   H1242 in the morning H6485 , and numbered [H8799]   H5971 the people H5927 , and went up [H8799]   H2205 , he and the elders H3478 of Israel H6440 , before H5971 the people H5857 to Ai.
H5971 And all the people H4421 , even the people of war H5927 that were with him, went up [H8804]   H5066 , and drew nigh [H8799]   H935 , and came [H8799]   H5892 before the city H2583 , and pitched [H8799]   H6828 on the north side H5857 of Ai H1516 : now there was a valley H5857 between them and Ai.
H3947 And he took [H8799]   H2568 about five H505 thousand H376 men H7760 , and set [H8799]   H693 them to lie in ambush [H8802]   H1008 between Bethel H5857 and Ai H3220 , on the west side H5857 of the city [H8675]   H5892  .
H7760 And when they had set [H8799]   H5971 the people H4264 , even all the host H6828 that was on the north H5892 of the city H6119 , and their liers in wait H3220 on the west H5892 of the city H3091 , Joshua H3212 went [H8799]   H3915 that night H8432 into the midst H6010 of the valley.
H4428 And it came to pass, when the king H5857 of Ai H7200 saw [H8800]   H4116 it, that they hasted [H8762]   H7925 and rose up early [H8686]   H582 , and the men H5892 of the city H3318 went out [H8799]   H7125 against [H8800]   H3478 Israel H4421 to battle H5971 , he and all his people H4150 , at a time appointed H6440 , before H6160 the plain H3045 ; but he wist [H8804]   H693 not that there were liers in ambush [H8802]   H310 against him behind H5892 the city.
H3091 And Joshua H3478 and all Israel H5060 made as if they were beaten [H8735]   H6440 before H5127 them, and fled [H8799]   H1870 by the way H4057 of the wilderness.
H5971 And all the people H5857 that were in Ai [H8675]   H5892   H2199 were called [H8735]   H7291 together to pursue [H8800]   H310 after H7291 them: and they pursued [H8799]   H310 after H3091 Joshua H5423 , and were drawn away [H8735]   H5892 from the city.
H376 And there was not a man H7604 left [H8738]   H5857 in Ai H1008 or Bethel H3318 , that went not out [H8804]   H310 after H3478 Israel H5800 : and they left [H8799]   H5892 the city H6605 open [H8803]   H7291 , and pursued [H8799]   H3478 after Israel.
H3068 And the LORD H559 said [H8799]   H3091 unto Joshua H5186 , Stretch out [H8798]   H3591 the spear H3027 that is in thy hand H5857 toward Ai H5414 ; for I will give [H8799]   H3027 it into thine hand H3091 . And Joshua H5186 stretched out [H8799]   H3591 the spear H3027 that he had in his hand H5892 toward the city.
H693 And the ambush [H8802]   H6965 arose [H8804]   H4120 quickly H4725 out of their place H7323 , and they ran [H8799]   H5186 as soon as he had stretched out [H8800]   H3027 his hand H935 : and they entered [H8799]   H5892 into the city H3920 , and took [H8799]   H4116 it, and hasted [H8762]   H3341 and set [H8686]   H5892 the city H784 on fire.
H582 And when the men H5857 of Ai H6437 looked [H8799]   H310 behind H7200 them, they saw [H8799]   H6227 , and, behold, the smoke H5892 of the city H5927 ascended up [H8804]   H8064 to heaven H3027 , and they had no power H5127 to flee [H8800]   H2008 this way or that way H5971 : and the people H5127 that fled [H8801]   H4057 to the wilderness H2015 turned back [H8738]   H7291 upon the pursuers [H8802]  .
H3091 And when Joshua H3478 and all Israel H7200 saw [H8804]   H693 that the ambush [H8802]   H3920 had taken [H8804]   H5892 the city H6227 , and that the smoke H5892 of the city H5927 ascended [H8804]   H7725 , then they turned again [H8799]   H5221 , and slew [H8686]   H582 the men H5857 of Ai.
H428 And the other H3318 issued out [H8804]   H5892 of the city H7125 against [H8800]   H8432 them; so they were in the midst H3478 of Israel H5221 , some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote [H8686]   H5704 them, so that H7604 they let [H8689]   H8300 none of them remain H6412 or escape.
H4428 And the king H5857 of Ai H8610 they took [H8804]   H2416 alive H7126 , and brought [H8686]   H3091 him to Joshua.
H3478 And it came to pass, when Israel H3615 had made an end [H8763]   H2026 of slaying [H8800]   H3427 all the inhabitants [H8802]   H5857 of Ai H7704 in the field H4057 , in the wilderness H7291 wherein they chased [H8804]   H5307 them, and when they were all fallen [H8799]   H6310 on the edge H2719 of the sword H8552 , until they were consumed [H8800]   H3478 , that all the Israelites H7725 returned [H8799]   H5857 unto Ai H5221 , and smote [H8686]   H6310 it with the edge H2719 of the sword.
H5307 And so it was, that all that fell [H8802]   H3117 that day H376 , both of men H802 and women H8147 , were twelve H6240   H505 thousand H582 , even all the men H5857 of Ai.
H3091 For Joshua H7725 drew H3027 not his hand H7725 back [H8689]   H5186 , wherewith he stretched out [H8804]   H3591 the spear H2763 , until he had utterly destroyed [H8689]   H3427 all the inhabitants [H8802]   H5857 of Ai.
H929 Only the cattle H7998 and the spoil H5892 of that city H3478 Israel H962 took for a prey [H8804]   H1697 unto themselves, according unto the word H3068 of the LORD H6680 which he commanded [H8765]   H3091 Joshua.
H3091 And Joshua H8313 burnt [H8799]   H5857 Ai H7760 , and made [H8799]   H8510 it an heap H5769 for ever H8077 , even a desolation H3117 unto this day.
H4428 And the king H5857 of Ai H8518 he hanged [H8804]   H6086 on a tree H6256 until eventide H6153   H8121 : and as soon as the sun H935 was down [H8800]   H3091 , Joshua H6680 commanded [H8765]   H3381 that they should take H5038 his carcase H3381 down [H8686]   H6086 from the tree H7993 , and cast [H8686]   H6607 it at the entering H8179 of the gate H5892 of the city H6965 , and raise [H8686]   H1419 thereon a great H1530 heap H68 of stones H3117 , that remaineth unto this day.
H3091 Then Joshua H1129 built [H8799]   H4196 an altar H3068 unto the LORD H430 God H3478 of Israel H2022 in mount H5858 Ebal,
H4872 As Moses H5650 the servant H3068 of the LORD H6680 commanded [H8765]   H1121 the children H3478 of Israel H3789 , as it is written [H8803]   H5612 in the book H8451 of the law H4872 of Moses H4196 , an altar H8003 of whole H68 stones H5130 , over which no man hath lift up [H8689]   H1270 any iron H5927 : and they offered [H8686]   H5930 thereon burnt offerings H3068 unto the LORD H2076 , and sacrificed [H8799]   H8002 peace offerings.
H3789 And he wrote [H8799]   H68 there upon the stones H4932 a copy H8451 of the law H4872 of Moses H3789 , which he wrote [H8804]   H6440 in the presence H1121 of the children H3478 of Israel.
H3478 And all Israel H2205 , and their elders H7860 , and officers [H8802]   H8199 , and their judges [H8802]   H5975 , stood [H8802]   H727 on this side the ark H3548 and on that side before the priests H3881 the Levites H5375 , which bare [H8802]   H727 the ark H1285 of the covenant H3068 of the LORD H1616 , as well the stranger H249 , as he that was born H2677 among them; half H413 of them over H4136 against H2022 mount H1630 Gerizim H2677 , and half H4136 of them over against H2022 mount H5858 Ebal H4872 ; as Moses H5650 the servant H3068 of the LORD H6680 had commanded [H8765]   H7223 before H1288 , that they should bless [H8763]   H5971 the people H3478 of Israel.
H310 And afterward H7121 he read [H8804]   H1697 all the words H8451 of the law H1293 , the blessings H7045 and cursings H3789 , according to all that is written [H8803]   H5612 in the book H8451 of the law.
H1697 There was not a word H4872 of all that Moses H6680 commanded [H8765]   H3091 , which Joshua H7121 read [H8804]   H6951 not before all the congregation H3478 of Israel H802 , with the women H2945 , and the little ones H1616 , and the strangers H1980 that were conversant [H8802]   H7130 among them.
ERV(i) 1 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai: see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city and his land: 2 And thou shalt do to Ai and her king as thou didst unto Jericho and her king: only the spoil thereof, and the cattle thereof, shall ye take for a prey unto yourselves: set thee an ambush for the city behind it. 3 So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up to Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand men, the mighty men of valour, and sent them forth by night. 4 And he commanded them, saying, Behold, ye shall lie in ambush against the city, behind the city: go not very far from the city, but be ye all ready: 5 and I, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city: and it shall come to pass, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them; 6 and they will come out after us, till we have drawn them away from the city; for they will say, They flee before us, as at the first; so we will flee before them: 7 and ye shall rise up from the ambush, and take possession of the city: for the LORD your God will deliver it into your hand. 8 And it shall be, when ye have seized upon the city, that ye shall set the city on fire; according to the word of the LORD shall ye do: see, I have commanded you. 9 And Joshua sent them forth: and they went to the ambushment, and abode between Beth-el and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the people. 10 And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and mustered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai. 11 And all the people, [even] the [men of] war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north side of Ai: now there was a valley between him and Ai. 12 And he took about five thousand men, and set them in ambush between Beth-el and Ai, on the west side of the city. 13 So they set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers in wait that were on the west of the city; and Joshua went that night into the midst of the vale. 14 And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at the time appointed, before the Arabah; but he wist not that there was an ambush against him behind the city. 15 And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness. 16 And all the people that were in the city were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city. 17 And there was not a man left in Ai or Beth-el, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel. 18 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Stretch out the javelin that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thine hand. And Joshua stretched out the javelin that was in his hand toward the city. 19 And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand, and entered into the city, and took it; and they hasted and set the city on fire. 20 And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers. 21 And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and slew the men of Ai. 22 And the other came forth out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape. 23 And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua. 24 And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they pursued them, and they were all fallen by the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all Israel returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword. 25 And all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai. 26 For Joshua drew not back his hand wherewith he stretched out the javelin, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai. 27 Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Israel took for a prey unto themselves, according unto the word of the LORD which he commanded Joshua. 28 So Joshua burnt Ai, and made it an heap for ever, even a desolation, unto this day. 29 And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until the eventide: and at the going down of the sun Joshua commanded, and they took his carcase down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raised thereon a great heap of stones, unto this day. 30 Then Joshua built an altar unto the LORD, the God of Israel, in mount Ebal, 31 as Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of unhewn stones, upon which no man had lift up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt offerings unto the LORD, and sacrificed peace offerings. 32 And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote, in the presence of the children of Israel. 33 And all Israel, and their elders and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the stranger as the homeborn; half of them in front of mount Gerizim, and half of them in front of mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded, that they should bless the people of Israel first of all. 34 And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessing and the curse, according to all that is written in the book of the law. 35 There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the assembly of Israel, and the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were conversant among them.
