H1471 Now these are the nations H3068 which the LORD H3240 left [H8689]   H5254 , to prove [H8763]   H3478 Israel H3045 by them, even as many of Israel as had not known [H8804]   H4421 all the wars H3667 of Canaan;
H7535 Only that H1755 the generations H1121 of the children H3478 of Israel H3045 might know [H8800]   H3925 , to teach [H8763]   H4421 them war H6440 , at the least such as before H3045 knew [H8804]   nothing thereof;
H2568 Namely, five H5633 lords H6430 of the Philistines H3669 , and all the Canaanites H6722 , and the Sidonians H2340 , and the Hivites H3427 that dwelt [H8802]   H2022 in mount H3844 Lebanon H2022 , from mount H1179 Baalhermon H935 unto the entering in [H8800]   H2574 of Hamath.
H5254 And they were to prove [H8763]   H3478 Israel H3045 by them, to know [H8800]   H8085 whether they would hearken [H8799]   H4687 unto the commandments H3068 of the LORD H6680 , which he commanded [H8765]   H1 their fathers H3027 by the hand H4872 of Moses.
H1121 And the children H3478 of Israel H3427 dwelt [H8804]   H7130 among H3669 the Canaanites H2850 , Hittites H567 , and Amorites H6522 , and Perizzites H2340 , and Hivites H2983 , and Jebusites:
H3947 And they took [H8799]   H1323 their daughters H802 to be their wives H5414 , and gave [H8804]   H1323 their daughters H1121 to their sons H5647 , and served [H8799]   H430 their gods.
H1121 And the children H3478 of Israel H6213 did [H8799]   H7451 evil H5869 in the sight H3068 of the LORD H7911 , and forgat [H8799]   H3068 the LORD H430 their God H5647 , and served [H8799]   H1168 Baalim H842 and the groves.
H639 Therefore the anger H3068 of the LORD H2734 was hot [H8799]   H3478 against Israel H4376 , and he sold [H8799]   H3027 them into the hand H3573 of Chushanrishathaim H4428 king H763 of Mesopotamia H1121 : and the children H3478 of Israel H5647 served [H8799]   H3573 Chushanrishathaim H8083 eight H8141 years.
H1121 And when the children H3478 of Israel H2199 cried [H8799]   H3068 unto the LORD H3068 , the LORD H6965 raised up [H8686]   H3467 a deliverer [H8688]   H1121 to the children H3478 of Israel H3467 , who delivered [H8686]   H6274 them, even Othniel H1121 the son H7073 of Kenaz H3612 , Caleb's H6996 younger H251 brother.
H7307 And the Spirit H3068 of the LORD H8199 came upon him, and he judged [H8799]   H3478 Israel H3318 , and went out [H8799]   H4421 to war H3068 : and the LORD H5414 delivered [H8799]   H3573 Chushanrishathaim H4428 king H763 of Mesopotamia H3027 into his hand H3027 ; and his hand H5810 prevailed [H8799]   H3573 against Chushanrishathaim.
H776 And the land H8252 had rest [H8799]   H705 forty H8141 years H6274 . And Othniel H1121 the son H7073 of Kenaz H4191 died [H8799]  .
H1121 And the children H3478 of Israel H6213 did [H8800]   H7451 evil H3254 again [H8686]   H5869 in the sight H3068 of the LORD H3068 : and the LORD H2388 strengthened [H8762]   H5700 Eglon H4428 the king H4124 of Moab H3478 against Israel H6213 , because they had done [H8804]   H7451 evil H5869 in the sight H3068 of the LORD.
H622 And he gathered [H8799]   H1121 unto him the children H5983 of Ammon H6002 and Amalek H3212 , and went [H8799]   H5221 and smote [H8686]   H3478 Israel H3423 , and possessed [H8799]   H5892 the city H8558 of palm trees [H8677]   H5899  .
H1121 So the children H3478 of Israel H5647 served [H8799]   H5700 Eglon H4428 the king H4124 of Moab H8083 eighteen H6240   H8141 years.
H1121 But when the children H3478 of Israel H2199 cried [H8799]   H3068 unto the LORD H3068 , the LORD H6965 raised them up [H8686]   H3467 a deliverer [H8688]   H164 , Ehud H1121 the son H1617 of Gera H1145 , a Benjamite H376 , a man H334 lefthanded H3225   H3027 : and by him H1121 the children H3478 of Israel H7971 sent [H8799]   H4503 a present H5700 unto Eglon H4428 the king H4124 of Moab.
H164 But Ehud H6213 made [H8799]   H2719 him a dagger H8147 which had two H6366 edges H1574 , of a cubit H753 length H2296 ; and he did gird [H8799]   H4055 it under his raiment H3225 upon his right H3409 thigh.
H7126 And he brought [H8686]   H4503 the present H5700 unto Eglon H4428 king H4124 of Moab H5700 : and Eglon H3966 was a very H1277 fat H376 man.
H3615 And when he had made an end [H8765]   H7126 to offer [H8687]   H4503 the present H7971 , he sent away [H8762]   H5971 the people H5375 that bare [H8802]   H4503 the present.
H7725 But he himself turned again [H8804]   H6456 from the quarries H1537 that were by Gilgal H559 , and said [H8799]   H5643 , I have a secret H1697 errand H4428 unto thee, O king H559 : who said [H8799]   H2013 , Keep silence [H8761]   H5975 . And all that stood [H8802]   H3318 by him went out [H8799]   from him.
H164 And Ehud H935 came [H8804]   H3427 unto him; and he was sitting [H8802]   H4747 in a summer H5944 parlour H164 , which he had for himself alone. And Ehud H559 said [H8799]   H1697 , I have a message H430 from God H6965 unto thee. And he arose [H8799]   H3678 out of his seat.
H164 And Ehud H7971 put forth [H8799]   H8040 his left H3027 hand H3947 , and took [H8799]   H2719 the dagger H3225 from his right H3409 thigh H8628 , and thrust [H8799]   H990 it into his belly:
H5325 And the haft H935 also went in [H8799]   H310 after H3851 the blade H2459 ; and the fat H5462 closed [H8799]   H1157 upon H3851 the blade H8025 , so that he could not draw [H8804]   H2719 the dagger H990 out of his belly H6574 ; and the dirt H3318 came out [H8799]  .
H164 Then Ehud H3318 went forth [H8799]   H4528 through the porch H5462 , and shut [H8799]   H1817 the doors H5944 of the parlour H5274 upon him, and locked [H8804]   them.
H3318 When he was gone out [H8804]   H5650 , his servants H935 came [H8804]   H7200 ; and when they saw [H8799]   H1817 that, behold, the doors H5944 of the parlour H5274 were locked [H8803]   H559 , they said [H8799]   H5526 , Surely he covereth [H8688]   H7272 his feet H4747 in his summer H2315 chamber.
H2342 And they tarried [H8799]   H954 till they were ashamed [H8800]   H6605 : and, behold, he opened [H8802]   H1817 not the doors H5944 of the parlour H3947 ; therefore they took [H8799]   H4668 a key H6605 , and opened [H8799]   H113 them : and, behold, their lord H5307 was fallen down [H8802]   H4191 dead [H8801]   H776 on the earth.
H164 And Ehud H4422 escaped [H8738]   H4102 while they tarried [H8699]   H5674 , and passed beyond [H8804]   H6456 the quarries H4422 , and escaped [H8735]   H8167 unto Seirath.
H935 And it came to pass, when he was come [H8800]   H8628 , that he blew [H8799]   H7782 a trumpet H2022 in the mountain H669 of Ephraim H1121 , and the children H3478 of Israel H3381 went down [H8799]   H2022 with him from the mount H6440 , and he before them.
H559 And he said [H8799]   H7291 unto them, Follow [H8798]   H310 after H3068 me: for the LORD H5414 hath delivered [H8804]   H341 your enemies [H8802]   H4124 the Moabites H3027 into your hand H3381 . And they went down [H8799]   H310 after H3920 him, and took [H8799]   H4569 the fords H3383 of Jordan H4124 toward Moab H5414 , and suffered [H8804]   H376 not a man H5674 to pass over [H8800]  .
H5221 And they slew [H8686]   H4124 of Moab H6256 at that time H6235 about ten H505 thousand H376 men H8082 , all lusty H376 , and all men H2428 of valour H4422 ; and there escaped [H8738]   H376 not a man.
H4124 So Moab H3665 was subdued [H8735]   H3117 that day H3027 under the hand H3478 of Israel H776 . And the land H8252 had rest [H8799]   H8084 fourscore H8141 years.
H310 And after H8044 him was Shamgar H1121 the son H6067 of Anath H5221 , which slew [H8686]   H6430 of the Philistines H8337 six H3967 hundred H376 men H1241 with an ox H4451 goad H3467 : and he also delivered [H8686]   H3478 Israel.
ERV(i) 1 Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many as had not known all the wars of Canaan; 2 only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as beforetime knew nothing thereof; 3 [namely], the five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Zidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-hermon unto the entering in of Hamath. 4 And they were for to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses. 5 And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites; the Hittite, and the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite: 6 and they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods. 7 And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, and forgat the LORD their God, and served the Baalim and the Asheroth. 8 Therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim eight years. 9 And when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a saviour to the children of Israel, who saved them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. 10 And the spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel; and he went out to war, and the LORD delivered Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand: and his hand prevailed against Cushan-rishathaim. 11 And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died. 12 And the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done that which was evil in the sight of the LORD. 13 And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek; and went and smote Israel, and they possessed the city of palm trees. 14 And the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years. 15 But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a saviour, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and the children of Israel sent a present by him unto Eglon the king of Moab. 16 And Ehud made him a sword which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he girded it under his raiment upon his right thigh. 17 And he offered the present unto Eglon king of Moab: now Eglon was a very fat man. 18 And when he had made an end of offering the present, he sent away the people that bare the present. 19 But he himself turned back from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king. And he said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him. 20 And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting by himself alone in his summer parlour. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat. 21 And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly: 22 and the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, for he drew not the sword out of his belly; and it came out behind. 23 Then Ehud went forth into the porch, and shut the doors of the parlour upon him, and locked them. 24 Now when he was gone out, his servants came; and they saw, and, behold, the doors of the parlour were locked; and they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber. 25 And they tarried till they were ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlour; therefore they took the key, and opened [them]: and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth. 26 And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirah. 27 And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he before them. 28 And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan against the Moabites, and suffered not a man to pass over. 29 And they smote of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, every lusty man, and every man of valour; and there escaped not a man. 30 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years. 31 And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which smote of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also saved Israel.
