3 G1063 For G3778 this G2076 is he [G5748] G4483 that was spoken [G5685] G5259 of by G4396 the prophet G2268 Esaias G3004 , saying [G5723] G5456 , The voice G994 of one crying [G5723] G1722 in G2048 the wilderness G2090 , Prepare ye [G5657] G3598 the way G2962 of the Lord G4160 , make [G5720] G846 his G5147 paths G2117 straight.

4 G1161 And G846 the same G2491 John G2192 had [G5707] G846 his G1742 raiment G575 of G2574 camel's G2359 hair G2532 , and G1193 a leathern G2223 girdle G4012 about G846 his G3751 loins G1161 ; and G846 his G5160 meat G2258 was [G5713] G200 locusts G2532 and G66 wild G3192 honey.

5 G5119 Then G1607 went out [G5711] G4314 to G846 him G2414 Jerusalem G2532 , and G3956 all G2449 Judaea G2532 , and G3956 all G4066 the region round about G2446 Jordan,

10 G1161 And G2235 now G2532 also G513 the axe G2749 is laid [G5736] G4314 unto G4491 the root G1186 of the trees G3767 : therefore G3956 every G1186 tree G4160 which bringeth G3361 not G4160 forth [G5723] G2570 good G2590 fruit G1581 is hewn down [G5743] G2532 , and G906 cast [G5743] G1519 into G4442 the fire.

11 G1473 I G3303 indeed G907 baptize [G5719] G5209 you G1722 with G5204 water G1519 unto G3341 repentance G1161 : but G2064 he that cometh [G5740] G3694 after G3450 me G2076 is [G5748] G2478 mightier than G3450 I G3739 , whose G5266 shoes G1510 I am [G5748] G3756 not G2425 worthy G941 to bear [G5658] G846 : he G907 shall baptize [G5692] G5209 you G1722 with G40 the Holy G4151 Ghost G2532 , and G4442 with fire:

12 G3739 Whose G4425 fan G1722 is in G846 his G5495 hand G2532 , and G1245 he will throughly purge [G5692] G846 his G257 floor G2532 , and G4863 gather [G5692] G846 his G4621 wheat G1519 into G596 the garner G1161 ; but G2618 he will burn up [G5692] G892 the chaff G762 with unquenchable G4442 fire.

13 G5119 Then G3854 cometh [G5736] G2424 Jesus G575 from G1056 Galilee G1909 to G2446 Jordan G4314 unto G2491 John G907 , to be baptized [G5683] G5259 of G846 him.

14 G1161 But G2491 John G1254 forbad [G5707] G3004 him, saying [G5723] G1473 , I G2192 have [G5719] G5532 need G907 to be baptized [G5683] G5259 of G4675 thee G2532 , and G2064 comest [G5736] G4771 thou G4314 to G3165 me?

15 G1161 And G2424 Jesus G611 answering [G5679] G2036 said [G5627] G4314 unto G846 him G863 , Suffer [G5628] G737 it to be so now G1063 : for G3779 thus G4241 it becometh [G5723] G2076 [G5748] G2254 us G4137 to fulfil [G5658] G3956 all G1343 righteousness G5119 . Then G863 he suffered [G5719] G846 him.

16 G2532 And G2424 Jesus G907 , when he was baptized [G5685] G305 , went up [G5627] G2117 straightway G575 out of G5204 the water G2532 : and G2400 , lo [G5628] G3772 , the heavens G455 were opened [G5681] G846 unto him G2532 , and G1492 he saw [G5627] G4151 the Spirit G2316 of God G2597 descending [G5723] G5616 like G4058 a dove G2532 , and G2064 lighting [G5740] G1909 upon G846 him:

ERV⁽ⁱ⁾ ¹ And in those days cometh John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, ² saying, Repent ye; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. ³ For this is he that was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make ye ready the way of the Lord, Make his paths straight. ⁴ Now John himself had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his food was locusts and wild honey. ⁵ Then went out unto him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan; ⁶ and they were baptized of him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. ⁷ But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said unto them, Ye offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? ⁸ Bring forth therefore fruit worthy of repentance: ⁹ and think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. ¹⁰ And even now is the axe laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. ¹¹ I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and [with] fire: ¹² whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly cleanse his threshing-floor; and he will gather his wheat into the garner, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire. ¹³ Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. ¹⁴ But John would have hindered him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? ¹⁵ But Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer [it] now: for thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he suffereth him. ¹⁶ And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway from the water: and lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him; ¹⁷ and lo, a voice out of the heavens, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
