1 Chronicles 21
KJV_Strongs(i)
1
H7854
And Satan
H5975
stood up
[H8799]
H3478
against Israel
H5496
, and provoked
[H8686]
H1732
David
H4487
to number
[H8800]
H3478
Israel.
2
H1732
And David
H559
said
[H8799]
H3097
to Joab
H8269
and to the rulers
H5971
of the people
H3212
, Go
[H8798]
H5608
, number
[H8798]
H3478
Israel
H884
from Beersheba
H1835
even to Dan
H935
; and bring
[H8685]
H4557
the number
H3045
of them to me, that I may know
[H8799]
it .
3
H3097
And Joab
H559
answered
[H8799]
H3068
, The LORD
H5971
make his people
H3967
an hundred
H6471
times
H3254
so many more
[H8686]
H1992
as they
H113
be : but, my lord
H4428
the king
H113
, are they not all my lord's
H5650
servants
H113
? why then doth my lord
H1245
require
[H8762]
H819
this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass
H3478
to Israel?
4
H4428
Nevertheless the king's
H1697
word
H2388
prevailed
[H8804]
H3097
against Joab
H3097
. Wherefore Joab
H3318
departed
[H8799]
H1980
, and went
[H8691]
H3478
throughout all Israel
H935
, and came
[H8799]
H3389
to Jerusalem.
5
H3097
And Joab
H5414
gave
[H8799]
H4557
the sum
H4662
of the number
H5971
of the people
H1732
unto David
H3478
. And all they of Israel
H505
were a thousand
H505
thousand
H3967
and an hundred
H505
thousand
H376
men
H8025
that drew
[H8802]
H2719
sword
H3063
: and Judah
H702
was four
H3967
hundred
H7657
threescore and ten
H505
thousand
H376
men
H8025
that drew
[H8802]
H2719
sword.
6
H3878
But Levi
H1144
and Benjamin
H6485
counted
[H8804]
H8432
he not among
H4428
them: for the king's
H1697
word
H8581
was abominable
[H8738]
H3097
to Joab.
7
H430
And God
H3415
was displeased
[H8799]
H5869
H1697
with this thing
H5221
; therefore he smote
[H8686]
H3478
Israel.
8
H1732
And David
H559
said
[H8799]
H430
unto God
H2398
, I have sinned
[H8804]
H3966
greatly
H6213
, because I have done
[H8804]
H1697
this thing
H5674
: but now, I beseech thee, do away
[H8685]
H5771
the iniquity
H5650
of thy servant
H3966
; for I have done very
H5528
foolishly
[H8738]
.
9
H3068
And the LORD
H1696
spake
[H8762]
H1410
unto Gad
H1732
, David's
H2374
seer
H559
, saying
[H8800]
,
10
H3212
Go
[H8798]
H1696
and tell
[H8765]
H1732
David
H559
, saying
[H8800]
H559
, Thus saith
[H8804]
H3068
the LORD
H5186
, I offer
[H8802]
H7969
thee three
H977
things : choose
[H8798]
H259
thee one
H2007
of them
H6213
, that I may do
[H8799]
it unto thee.
11
H1410
So Gad
H935
came
[H8799]
H1732
to David
H559
, and said
[H8799]
H559
unto him, Thus saith
[H8804]
H3068
the LORD
H6901
, Choose
[H8761]
thee
12
H7969
Either three
H8141
years
H7458
' famine
H7969
; or three
H2320
months
H5595
to be destroyed
[H8737]
H6440
before
H6862
thy foes
H2719
, while that the sword
H341
of thine enemies
[H8802]
H5381
overtaketh
[H8688]
H518
thee; or
H7969
else three
H3117
days
H2719
the sword
H3068
of the LORD
H1698
, even the pestilence
H776
, in the land
H4397
, and the angel
H3068
of the LORD
H7843
destroying
[H8688]
H1366
throughout all the coasts
H3478
of Israel
H7200
. Now therefore advise
[H8798]
H1697
thyself what word
H7725
I shall bring again
[H8686]
H7971
to him that sent
[H8802]
me.
13
H1732
And David
H559
said
[H8799]
H1410
unto Gad
H3966
, I am in a great
H6887
strait
[H8804]
H5307
: let me fall
[H8799]
H3027
now into the hand
H3068
of the LORD
H3966
; for very
H7227
great
H7356
are his mercies
H5307
: but let me not fall
[H8799]
H3027
into the hand
H120
of man.
14
H3068
So the LORD
H5414
sent
[H8799]
H1698
pestilence
H3478
upon Israel
H5307
: and there fell
[H8799]
H3478
of Israel
H7657
seventy
H505
thousand
H376
men.
15
H430
And God
H7971
sent
[H8799]
H4397
an angel
H3389
unto Jerusalem
H7843
to destroy
[H8687]
H7843
it: and as he was destroying
[H8687]
H3068
, the LORD
H7200
beheld
[H8804]
H5162
, and he repented
[H8735]
H7451
him of the evil
H559
, and said
[H8799]
H4397
to the angel
H7843
that destroyed
[H8688]
H7227
, It is enough
H7503
, stay
[H8685]
H3027
now thine hand
H4397
. And the angel
H3068
of the LORD
H5975
stood
[H8802]
H1637
by the threshingfloor
H771
of Ornan
H2983
the Jebusite.
16
H1732
And David
H5375
lifted up
[H8799]
H5869
his eyes
H7200
, and saw
[H8799]
H4397
the angel
H3068
of the LORD
H5975
stand
[H8802]
H776
between the earth
H8064
and the heaven
H8025
, having a drawn
[H8803]
H2719
sword
H3027
in his hand
H5186
stretched out
[H8803]
H3389
over Jerusalem
H1732
. Then David
H2205
and the elders
H3680
of Israel, who were clothed
[H8794]
H8242
in sackcloth
H5307
, fell
[H8799]
H6440
upon their faces.
17
H1732
And David
H559
said
[H8799]
H430
unto God
H559
, Is it not I that commanded
[H8804]
H5971
the people
H4487
to be numbered
[H8800]
H2398
? even I it is that have sinned
[H8804]
H7489
and done evil
[H8689]
H7489
indeed
[H8687]
H6629
; but as for these sheep
H6213
, what have they done
[H8804]
H3027
? let thine hand
H3068
, I pray thee, O LORD
H430
my God
H1
, be on me, and on my father's
H1004
house
H5971
; but not on thy people
H4046
, that they should be plagued.
18
H4397
Then the angel
H3068
of the LORD
H559
commanded
[H8804]
H1410
Gad
H559
to say
[H8800]
H1732
to David
H1732
, that David
H5927
should go up
[H8799]
H6965
, and set up
[H8687]
H4196
an altar
H3068
unto the LORD
H1637
in the threshingfloor
H771
of Ornan
H2983
the Jebusite.
19
H1732
And David
H5927
went up
[H8799]
H1697
at the saying
H1410
of Gad
H1696
, which he spake
[H8765]
H8034
in the name
H3068
of the LORD.
20
H771
And Ornan
H7725
turned back
[H8799]
H7200
, and saw
[H8799]
H4397
the angel
H702
; and his four
H1121
sons
H2244
with him hid
[H8693]
H771
themselves. Now Ornan
H1758
was threshing
[H8804]
H2406
wheat.
21
H1732
And as David
H935
came
[H8799]
H771
to Ornan
H771
, Ornan
H5027
looked
[H8686]
H7200
and saw
[H8799]
H1732
David
H3318
, and went out
[H8799]
H1637
of the threshingfloor
H7812
, and bowed
[H8691]
H1732
himself to David
H639
with his face
H776
to the ground.
22
H1732
Then David
H559
said
[H8799]
H771
to Ornan
H5414
, Grant
[H8798]
H4725
me the place
H1637
of this threshingfloor
H1129
, that I may build
[H8799]
H4196
an altar
H3068
therein unto the LORD
H5414
: thou shalt grant
[H8798]
H4392
it me for the full
H3701
price
H4046
: that the plague
H6113
may be stayed
[H8735]
H5971
from the people.
23
H771
And Ornan
H559
said
[H8799]
H1732
unto David
H3947
, Take
[H8798]
H113
it to thee, and let my lord
H4428
the king
H6213
do
[H8799]
H2896
that which is good
H5869
in his eyes
H7200
: lo
[H8798]
H5414
, I give
[H8804]
H1241
thee the oxen
H5930
also for burnt offerings
H4173
, and the threshing instruments
H6086
for wood
H2406
, and the wheat
H4503
for the meat offering
H5414
; I give
[H8804]
it all.
24
H4428
And king
H1732
David
H559
said
[H8799]
H771
to Ornan
H7069
, Nay; but I will verily
[H8800]
H7069
buy
[H8799]
H4392
it for the full
H3701
price
H5375
: for I will not take
[H8799]
H3068
that which is thine for the LORD
H5927
, nor offer
[H8687]
H5930
burnt offerings
H2600
without cost.
25
H1732
So David
H5414
gave
[H8799]
H771
to Ornan
H4725
for the place
H8337
six
H3967
hundred
H8255
shekels
H2091
of gold
H4948
by weight.
26
H1732
And David
H1129
built
[H8799]
H4196
there an altar
H3068
unto the LORD
H5927
, and offered
[H8686]
H5930
burnt offerings
H8002
and peace offerings
H7121
, and called
[H8799]
H3068
upon the LORD
H6030
; and he answered
[H8799]
H8064
him from heaven
H784
by fire
H4196
upon the altar
H5930
of burnt offering.
27
H3068
And the LORD
H559
commanded
[H8799]
H4397
the angel
H7725
; and he put up
H2719
his sword
H7725
again
[H8686]
H5084
into the sheath thereof.
28
H6256
At that time
H1732
when David
H7200
saw
[H8800]
H3068
that the LORD
H6030
had answered
[H8804]
H1637
him in the threshingfloor
H771
of Ornan
H2983
the Jebusite
H2076
, then he sacrificed
[H8799]
there.
ERV(i)
1 And Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to number Israel.
2 And David said to Joab and to the princes of the people, Go, number Israel from Beer-sheba even to Dan; and bring me word, that I may know the sum of them.
3 And Joab said, The LORD make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord’s servants? why doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of guilt unto Israel?
4 Nevertheless the king’s word prevailed against Joab. Wherefore Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.
5 And Joab gave up the sum of the numbering of the people unto David. And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword;
6 But Levi and Benjamin counted he not among them: for the king’s word was abominable to Joab.
7 And God was displeased with this thing; therefore he smote Israel.
8 And David said unto God, I have sinned greatly, in that I have done this thing: but now, put away, I beseech thee, the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.
9 And the LORD spake unto Gad, David’s seer, saying,
10 Go and speak unto David, saying, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things; choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.
11 So Gad came to David, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Take which thou wilt;
12 either three years of famine; or three months to be consumed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the LORD, even pestilence in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel. Now therefore consider what answer I shall return to him that sent me.
13 And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the LORD; for very great are his mercies: and let me not fall into the hand of man.
14 So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel: and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men.
15 And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it: and as he was about to destroy, the LORD beheld, and he repented him of the evil, and said to the destroying angel, It is enough; now stay thine hand. And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
16 And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the LORD stand between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out ever Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.
17 And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done very wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, O LORD my God, be against me, and against my father’s house; but not against thy people, that they should be plagued.
18 Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up, and rear an altar unto the LORD in the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
19 And David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spake in the name of the LORD.
20 And Ornan turned back, and saw the angel; and his four sons that were with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.
21 And as David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshing-floor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.
22 Then David said to Ornan, Give me the place of this threshing-floor, that I may build thereon an altar unto the LORD: for the full price shalt thou give it me: that the plague may be stayed from the people.
23 And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give [thee] the oxen for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meal offering; I give it all.
24 And king David said to Ornan, Nay; but I will verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the LORD, nor offer a burnt offering without cost.
25 So David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of gold by weight.
26 And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called upon the LORD; and he answered him from heaven by fire upon the altar of burnt offering.
27 And the LORD commanded the angel; and he put up his sword again into the sheath thereof.
28 At that time, when David saw that the LORD had answered him in the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there.
29 For the tabernacle of the LORD, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering, were at that time in the high place at Gibeon.
30 But David could not go before it to inquire of God: for he was afraid because of the sword of the angel of the LORD.
