7 H3117 And in the days H783 of Artaxerxes H3789 [H8804] wrote H1312 Bishlam, H4990 Mithredath, H2870 Tabeel, H7605 and the rest H3674 of their companions, H783 to Artaxerxes H4428 king H6539 of Persia; H3791 and the writing H5406 of the letter H3789 [H8803] was written H762 in the Syrian language, H8638 [H8794] and interpreted H762 in the Syrian language.
  8 H7348 Rehum H1169 H2942 the chancellor H8124 and Shimshai H5613 the scribe H3790 [H8754] wrote H2298 a H104 letter H5922 against H3390 Jerusalem H783 to Artaxerxes H4430 the king H3660 in this sort:
9 H116 Then H7348 wrote Rehum H1169 H2942 the chancellor, H8124 and Shimshai H5613 the scribe, H7606 and the rest H3675 of their companions; H1784 the Dinaites, H671 the Apharsathchites, H2967 the Tarpelites, H670 the Apharsites, H756 the Archevites, H896 the Babylonians, H7801 the Susanchites, H1723 the Dehavites, H5962 and the Elamites,
10 H7606 And the rest H524 of the nations H1768 whom H7229 the great H3358 and noble H620 Asnappar H1541 [H8684] brought over, H3488 H1994 [H8684] and set H7149 in the cities H8115 of Samaria, H7606 and the rest H5675 that are on this side H5103 of the river, H3706 and now.
11 H1836 this H6573 is the copy H104 of the letter H1768 that H7972 [H8754] they sent H5922 to him, H783 even to Artaxerxes H4430 the king; H5649 Thy servants H606 the men H5675 on this side H5103 of the river, H3706 and now.
  12 H1934 [H8748] let it be H3046 [H8752] known H4430 to the king, H3062 that the Judeans H1768 who H5559 [H8760] came H4481 from H3890 thee H5922 to us H858 [H8754] are come H3390 to Jerusalem, H1124 [H8750] building H4779 the rebellious H873 and the evil H7149 city, H3635 H3635 [H8806] and have set up H7792 the walls, H2338 [H8681] and joined H787 the foundations.
13 H3046 H1934 [H8752] Be it known H3705 now H4430 to the king, H2006 that, if H1791 this H7149 city H1124 [H8731] shall be built, H7792 and the walls H3635 [H8720] set up H3809 again, then they will not H5415 [H8748] pay H4061 toll, H1093 tribute, H1983 and custom, H5142 [H8681] and so thou shalt diminish H674 the revenue H4430 of the kings.
  14 H3705 Now H6903 H3606 because H1768 we have H4415 H4416 [H8754] maintenance H1965 from the king's palace, H3809 and it was not H749 [H8750] good H2370 [H8749] for us to see H4430 the king's H6173 dishonour, H5922 H1836 therefore H7972 [H8754] have we sent H3046 [H8684] and informed H4430 the king;

And make up the walls of it? And bring it out of the foundation? 13 Be it known also unto the king, that if this city be builded and the walls made up again, then shall not they pay tribute, toll, and yearly custom, and the king's profit shall incur damage? 14 And now in the mean season we have destroyed the temple, and would no longer see the king's dishonour. Therefore sent we out, and caused the king to be certified thereof: 15 That it may be sought in the Chronicles of thy progenitors, and so shalt thou find in the same Chronicles, and perceive, that this city is seditious and noisome unto kings and lands, and that they cause others also to rebel of the old, and for the same cause was this city destroyed. 16 Therefore do we certify the king, that if this city be builded, and the walls thereof made up, thou shalt keep nothing on this side the water by the reason of it."

Thomson(i) 7 And in the days of Arthasastha, Tabeel in concert with Mithridates, and the rest of his fellow servants, wrote to Arthasastha king of the Persians; the collector of the tribute drew up a writing in Syriack; 8 and Reum Baltam and Sampsa the secretary, wrote a translation of it, as their joint letter against Jerusalem, to Arthasastha the king saying, 9 This hath been agreed on by Reum Baltam, and Sampsa the secretary, and the rest of our fellow servants, the Deinaians, Apharsathachaians, Tarphalaians, Apharsaians, Archuaians, Babylonians, Susanachaians, Davaians, 10 and the rest of the nations, whom the great and the honourable Assenaphar transplanted, and settled in the cities of Somoron, and the rest of the country on this side the river. 11 This was the purport of the letter which they sent to him, To Arthasastha the king., thy servants, the men beyond the river: 12 Be it known to the king, that the Jews who came up from thee to us, have come to Jerusalem, that rebellious and wicked city, and are rebuilding it. The walls of it are repaired, and they have reared up the foundations of it. 13 Now therefore be it known to the king, that if this city be rebuilt, and the walls therefore completed, no tribute will be paid to thee, nor will they do homage. Now as this is injurious to kings, 14 and it is not meet for us to see the king's dishonour, we have therefore sent to inform the king, 15 that he may examine the book of the records of thy fathers, by which thou wilt find, and know that this is a rebellious city, and hurtful to kings and countries, and that there are asylums for slaves in the midst of it, from time immemorial, for which cause this city was laid waste. 16 We therefore certify the king, that if this city be rebuilt, and the wall thereof reared up, there will be no peace for thee.

Brenton(i) 7 And in the days of Arthasastha, Tabeel wrote peaceably to Mithradates and to the rest of his fellow-servants: the tribute-gatherer wrote to Arthasastha king of the Persians a writing in the Syrian tongue, and the same interpreted. 8 Reum the chancellor, and Sampsa the scribe wrote an epistle against Jerusalem to King Arthasastha, saying, 9 Thus has judged Reum the chancellor, and Sampsa the scribe, and the rest of our fellow-servants, the Dinaeans, the Apharsathachaeans, the Tarphalaeans, the Apharsaeans, the Archyaeans, the Babylonians, the Susanachaeans, Davaeans, 10 and the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Assenaphar removed, and settled them in the cities of Somoron, and the rest of them beyond the river. 11 This is the purport of the letter, which they sent to him: Thy servants the men beyond the river to king Arthasastha. 12 Be it known to the king, that the Jews who came up from thee to us have come to Jerusalem the rebellious and wicked city, which they are building, and its walls are set in order, and they have established the foundations of it. 13 Now then be it known to the king, that if that city be built up, and its walls completed, thou shalt have no tribute, neither will they pay anything, and this injures kings. 14 And it is not lawful for us to see the dishonour of the king: therefore have we sent and made known the matter to the king; 15 That examination may be made in thy fathers' book of record; and thou shalt find, and thou shalt know that city is rebellious, and does harm to kings and countries, and there are in the midst of it from very old time refuges for runaway slaves: therefore this city has been made desolate. 16 We therefore declare to the king, that, if that city be built, and its walls be set up, thou shalt not have peace.

Rotherham(i) 7 And, in the days of Artaxerxes, wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his associates, unto Artaxerxes, king of Persia,––and, the writing of the letter, was written in Aramean, and was to be interpreted as Aramean. 8 Rehum holder of judicial authority, and Shimshai the scribe, wrote a certain letter against Jerusalem,––to Artaxerxes the king, thus: 9 Then Rehum holder of judicial authority, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their associates,––the Dinaites and the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Shushanchites, the Dehaites, the Elamites; 10 and the rest of the peoples, whom the great and noble Osnappar hath exiled, and set in the city of Samaria,––and the rest Beyond the River, and so forth: 11 This, is a copy of the letter which they sent unto him––unto Artaxerxes the king,––Thy servants, the men Beyond the River and so forth: 12 Be it known unto the king,––that, the Jews who came up from thee unto us, are come to Jerusalem,––the rebellious and wicked city, are they building, and, the walls, have they finished, and, the foundations, will they repair. 13 Now be it known to the king, that, if this city, be built, and, the walls thereof, be finished, neither, tribute, excise, nor toll, will they render, and so, the revenue of the kings, shalt thou damage. 14 Now, because the salt of the palace we have eaten, the impoverishment of the king, it is not meet for us to see,––therefore have we sent, and certified the king; 15 so that search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers, so shalt thou find out in the book of records––and shalt ascertain, that, this city, is a rebellious city, and one that causeth damage unto kings and provinces, and that, rebellion, have they been wont to cause in the midst thereof since the days of age–past time,––for this cause, was this city laid waste. 16 We do certify the king that, if, this city, be built, and, the walls thereof, finished, for that very reason, portion Beyond the River, shalt thou have none.

And now, 11 this is a transcript of the letter that they sent to him.) To king Artaxerxes from your servants, the men Beyond-the-Stream. And now, 12 let it become known to the king that the Judeans who came up here from you to us, have arrived at Jerusalem. They are rebuilding the revolting and stinking town. They are completing the walls and are repairing the foundations. 13 Now let it become known to the king that, if this town should be rebuilt and the walls be completed, they shall not pay tribute, tax or toll, and it shall cause damage to the revenue of the kings. 14 Now forasmuch as we have salted the salt of the palace, and it is not proper for us to perceive the denuding of the king, we have sent and have let the king know of this, 15 that one should make a quest in the scroll of the memoranda of your fathers. Then you shall find in the scroll of the memoranda and you shall know that this town is a revolting town, causing damage to kings and provinces. Those making insurrections were in its midst from the days of the eon. On this account this town was laid waste. 16 We are making known to the king, if this town should be rebuilt and the walls should be completed, because of this there will be no portion for you in the province Beyond-the-Stream.

And the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian character, and set forth in the Syrian tongue. 8 Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this way. 9 Then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions, the Dinaites, and the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Shushanchites, the Dehaites, the Elamites, 10 and the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Osnappar brought over, and set in the city of Samaria, and in the rest beyond the River, and so forth. 11 This is a copy of the letter that they sent to Artaxerxes the king: Thy servants the men beyond the River, and so forth. 12 Be it known to the king, that the Jews who came up from thee have come to us to Jerusalem. They are building the rebellious and the evil city, and have finished the walls, and repaired the foundations. 13 Be it known now to the king, that, if this city be built, and the walls finished, they will not pay tribute, custom, or toll, and in the end it will be hurtful to the kings. 14 Now because we eat the salt of the palace, and it is not fitting for us to see the king's dishonor, therefore we have sent and certified to the king, 15 that search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers. So thou shall find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful to kings and provinces. And that they have made sedition within the same of old time, for which cause this city was laid waste. 16 We certify to the king that, if this city be built, and the walls finished, by this means thou shall have no portion beyond the River.

CAB(i) 7 And in the days of Artaxerxes, Tabel wrote peaceably to Mithradath and to the rest of his fellow servants: the tax collector wrote to Artaxerxes king of the Persians a writing in the Syrian tongue, and the same interpreted. 8 Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote an epistle against Jerusalem to King Artaxerxes, saying, 9 Thus has judged Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of our fellow servants, the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the people of Persia, the Erech, the Babylonians, the Shushan, the Dehavites, 10 and the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Osnapper removed, and settled them in the cities of Samaria, and the rest of them beyond the river. 11 This is the contents of the letter which they sent to him: To King Artaxerxes from your servants the men of the region beyond the river: 12 Be it known to the king, that the Jews who came up to us from you, have come to Jerusalem, the rebellious and wicked city which they are building, and its walls are set in order, and they have established the foundations of it. 13 Now then let it be known to the king, that if that city be built up, and its walls completed, you shall have no tribute, neither will they pay any tribute, and this injures kings. 14 And it is not lawful for us to see the dishonor of the king. Therefore have we sent and made known the matter to the king, 15 that examination may be made in your fathers' book of record. And you shall find, and you shall know that this city is rebellious, and does harm to kings and countries, and there are in the midst of it from very old time refuges for runaway slaves. Therefore this city has been made desolate. 16 We therefore declare to the king, that if this city is rebuilt, and its walls are set up, you shall have no peace.
LXX2012(i) 7 And in the days of Arthasastha, Tabeel wrote peaceably to Mithradates and to the rest of his fellow-servants: the tribute-gatherer wrote to Arthasastha king of the Persians a writing in the Syrian tongue, and [the same] interpreted. 8 Reum the chancellor, and Sampsa the scribe wrote an epistle against Jerusalem to King Arthasastha, [saying,] 9 Thus has judged Reum the chancellor, and Sampsa the scribe, and the rest of our fellow-servants, the Dinaeans, the Apharsathachaeans, the Tarphalaeans, the Apharsaeans, the Archyaeans, the Babylonians, the Susanachaeans, Davaeans, 10 and the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Assenaphar removed, and settled them in the cities of Somoron, and the rest [of them] beyond the river. 11 This [is] the purport of the letter, which they sent to him: Your servants the men beyond the river to king Arthasastha. 12 Be it known to the king, that the Jews who came up from you to us have come to Jerusalem the rebellious and wicked city, which they are building, and its walls are set in order, and they have established the foundations of it. 13 Now then be it known to the king, that if that city be built up, and its walls completed, you shall have no tribute, neither will they pay [anything], and this injures kings. 14 And it is not lawful for us to see the dishonor of the king: therefore have we sent and made known [the matter] to the king; 15 That examination may be made in your fathers' book of record; and you shall find, and you shall know that city [is] rebellious, and does harm to kings and countries, and there are in the midst of it from very old time refuges for [runaway] slaves: therefore this city has been made desolate. 16 We therefore declare to the king, that, if that city be built, and its walls be set up, you shall not have peace.
NSB(i) 7 In the time of Artaxerxes, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his friends, sent a letter to Artaxerxes, king of Persia, writing it in the Aramaic language. 8 Rehum, the chief ruler, and Shimshai the scribe, sent a letter against Jerusalem, to Artaxerxes the king as follows: 9 The letter was sent by Rehum, the chief ruler, and Shimshai the scribe and their friends; the Dinaites and the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Shushanchites (people of Susa), the Dehaites, the Elamites, 10 The rest of the nations the great and noble Osnappar took over and put in Samaria and the rest of the country over the river: 11 »This is a copy of the letter that they sent to Artaxerxes the king: ‘Your servants living across the river send these words: 12 »We give news to the king that the Jews who came from you have come to us at Jerusalem. They are again building that uncontrolled and evil town. The walls are complete and they are repairing the bases. 13 »The king may be certain that when the town and its wall are completely rebuilt they will pay no tax or payment in goods or forced payments, and in the end it will be a cause of loss to the kings. 14 »Because we are responsible to the king, and it is not right for us to see the king's honor damaged, we have sent to give the king word of these things. 15 »That way a search may be made in the book of the records of your fathers. You will see in the book of the records that this town has been uncontrolled. It has been a cause of trouble to kings and countries. There were outbursts against authority in the past. That is the reason the town was laid waste. 16 »We give you word, that if this town and its walls is completely rebuilt, your power in the country across the river will end.«
ISV(i) 7 While Artaxerxes was king of Persia, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their co-conspirators wrote in the Aramaic language and script to King Artaxerxes of Persia.
Aramaic:
8 Governor Rehum and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter concerning Jerusalem to King Artaxerxes as follows:
9 From Governor Rehum
Shimshai the scribe
The rest of their colleagues—
Judges, envoys, officials, Persians, the people of Erech, the Babylonians, the people of Susa (that is, the Elamites) 10 and many other nations whom the great and honorable Osnappar deported and resettled in Samaria and in the rest of the province beyond the Euphrates River.
11 This is the text of the letter they sent. To: King Artaxerxes From: Your servants, the men of the province beyond the Euphrates River. 12 May the king be advised that the Jews who came from you to us have reached Jerusalem and are rebuilding a rebellious and wicked city, having completed its walls and repaired its foundations. 13 May the king be further advised that if this city is rebuilt and its walls erected, its citizens will refuse to pay tributes, taxes, and tariffs, thereby restricting royal revenues. 14 Now, because we are royal employees and are committed to preserving the reputation of the king, we have written to the king and have declared its contents to be true, 15 urging that a search may be made in the official registers of your predecessors. You will discover in the registers that this city is a rebellious city, that it is damaging to both kings and provinces, that it has been moved to sedition from time immemorial, and that because of this it was destroyed. 16 We certify to the king that if this city is rebuilt and its walls completed, you will lose your land holdings in the province beyond the Euphrates River.
LEB(i) 7 And in the days of Artaxerxes, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their colleagues wrote to Artaxerxes king of Persia. The letter was written in Aramaic and translated from Aramaic. 8 Rehum the royal officer and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to King Artaxerxes as follows 9 (then Rehum the royal officer, Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their associates, the judges, the envoys, the officials, the Persians, the Erechs, the Babylonians, the Susians (that is the Elamites) 10 and the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Osnappar deported and settled in the cities of Samaria and the rest of the province Beyond the River) and now 11 this is the copy of the letter which they sent to him:
"To King Artaxerxes from your servants, the men of the province Beyond the River. And now, 12 be it known to the king that the Jews who have come up from near you to us have gone to Jerusalem. They are building the rebellious and wicked city. They are finishing the wall and repairing the foundation. 13 Now be it known to the king that if this city is built and the walls are finished, they will not pay tribute and toll, and the royal revenue will be reduced. 14 Now since we eat the salt of the palace and the dishonor of the king is not proper for us to see, we send and make this known to the king, 15 so that it may be investigated in the book of records of your ancestors.* You will find in the book of records and learn that this city is a rebellious city, hurtful to kings and provinces, and they have rebelled in its midst from ancient times. Because of that this city was destroyed. 16 We make known to the king that if this city is built and the walls are finished, you will have nothing in the province Beyond the River."

To King Artaxerxes, From your servants, the men west of the Euphrates: 12 Let it be known to the king that the Jews who came from you to us have returned to Jerusalem. And they are rebuilding that rebellious and wicked city, restoring its walls, and repairing its foundations. 13 Let it now be known to the king that if that city is rebuilt and its walls are restored, they will not pay tribute, duty, or toll, and the royal treasury will suffer. 14 Now because we are in the service of the palace and it is not fitting for us to allow the king to be dishonored, we have sent to inform the king 15 that a search should be made of the record books of your fathers. In these books you will discover and verify that the city is a rebellious city, harmful to kings and provinces, inciting sedition from ancient times. That is why this city was destroyed. 16 We advise the king that if this city is rebuilt and its walls are restored, you will have no dominion west of the Euphrates.

14 Now because we eat the salt of the palace and it is not fitting for us to see the king's dishonor, therefore we have sent and certified to the king, 15 that search may be made in the book of the records of your fathers.

13 Protož nyní buď vědomo králi, bude-li to město vystaveno, a zdi dodělány, platuť, cla a úroku dávati nebudou, a tak komoře královské újma bude.

FinnishPR(i) 7 Ja Artahsastan aikana kirjoittivat Bislam, Mitredat ja Taabeel ynnä näiden muut virkatoverit Artahsastalle, Persian kuninkaalle.
