H376 And the men H669 of Ephraim H559 said [H8799]   H4100 unto him, Why hast thou H6213 served [H8804]   H1697 us thus H7121 , that thou calledst [H8800]   H1980 us not, when thou wentest [H8804]   H3898 to fight [H8736]   H4080 with the Midianites H7378 ? And they did chide [H8799]   H2394 with him sharply.
H559 And he said [H8799]   H6213 unto them, What have I done [H8804]   H5955 now in comparison of you? Is not the gleaning H669 of the grapes of Ephraim H2896 better H1210 than the vintage H44 of Abiezer?
H430 God H5414 hath delivered [H8804]   H3027 into your hands H8269 the princes H4080 of Midian H6159 , Oreb H2062 and Zeeb H3201 : and what was I able [H8804]   H6213 to do [H8800]   H7307 in comparison of you? Then their anger H7503 was abated [H8804]   H1697 toward him, when he had said H1696 that [H8763]  .
H1439 And Gideon H935 came [H8799]   H3383 to Jordan H5674 , and passed over [H8802]   H7969 , he, and the three H3967 hundred H376 men H5889 that were with him, faint H7291 , yet pursuing [H8802]   them .
H559 And he said [H8799]   H582 unto the men H5523 of Succoth H5414 , Give [H8798]   H3603 , I pray you, loaves H3899 of bread H5971 unto the people H7272 that follow H5889 me; for they be faint H7291 , and I am pursuing [H8802]   H310 after H2078 Zebah H6759 and Zalmunna H4428 , kings H4080 of Midian.
H8269 And the princes H5523 of Succoth H559 said [H8799]   H3709 , Are the hands H2078 of Zebah H6759 and Zalmunna H3027 now in thine hand H5414 , that we should give [H8799]   H3899 bread H6635 unto thine army?
H1439 And Gideon H559 said [H8799]   H3068 , Therefore when the LORD H5414 hath delivered [H8800]   H2078 Zebah H6759 and Zalmunna H3027 into mine hand H1758 , then I will tear [H8804]   H1320 your flesh H6975 with the thorns H4057 of the wilderness H1303 and with briers.
H5927 And he went up [H8799]   H6439 thence to Penuel H1696 , and spake [H8762]   H2063 unto them likewise H582 : and the men H6439 of Penuel H6030 answered [H8799]   H582 him as the men H5523 of Succoth H6030 had answered [H8804]   him .
H559 And he spake [H8799]   H582 also unto the men H6439 of Penuel H559 , saying [H8800]   H7725 , When I come again [H8800]   H7965 in peace H5422 , I will break down [H8799]   H4026 this tower.
H2078 Now Zebah H6759 and Zalmunna H7174 were in Karkor H4264 , and their hosts H2568 with them, about fifteen H6240   H505 thousand H3498 men, all that were left [H8737]   H4264 of all the hosts H1121 of the children H6924 of the east H5307 : for there fell [H8802]   H3967 an hundred H6242 and twenty H505 thousand H376 men H8025 that drew [H8802]   H2719 sword.
H1439 And Gideon H5927 went up [H8799]   H1870 by the way H7931 of them that dwelt [H8803]   H168 in tents H6924 on the east H5025 of Nobah H3011 and Jogbehah H5221 , and smote [H8686]   H4264 the host H4264 : for the host H983 was secure.
H2078 And when Zebah H6759 and Zalmunna H5127 fled [H8799]   H7291 , he pursued [H8799]   H310 after H3920 them, and took [H8799]   H8147 the two H4428 kings H4080 of Midian H2078 , Zebah H6759 and Zalmunna H2729 , and discomfited [H8689]   H4264 all the host.
H1439 And Gideon H1121 the son H3101 of Joash H7725 returned [H8799]   H4421 from battle H4608 before H2775 the sun was up,
H3920 And caught [H8799]   H5288 a young man H582 of the men H5523 of Succoth H7592 , and enquired [H8799]   H3789 of him: and he described [H8799]   H8269 unto him the princes H5523 of Succoth H2205 , and the elders H7657 thereof, even threescore and seventeen H7651   H376 men.
H935 And he came [H8799]   H582 unto the men H5523 of Succoth H559 , and said [H8799]   H2078 , Behold Zebah H6759 and Zalmunna H2778 , with whom ye did upbraid [H8765]   H559 me, saying [H8800]   H3709 , Are the hands H2078 of Zebah H6759 and Zalmunna H3027 now in thine hand H5414 , that we should give [H8799]   H3899 bread H582 unto thy men H3287 that are weary?
H3947 And he took [H8799]   H2205 the elders H5892 of the city H6975 , and thorns H4057 of the wilderness H1303 and briers H3045 , and with them he taught [H8686]   H582 the men H5523 of Succoth.
H5422 And he beat down [H8804]   H4026 the tower H6439 of Penuel H2026 , and slew [H8799]   H582 the men H5892 of the city.
H559 Then said [H8799]   H2078 he unto Zebah H6759 and Zalmunna H375 , What H582 manner of men H2026 were they whom ye slew [H8804]   H8396 at Tabor H559 ? And they answered [H8799]   H3644 , As thou H259 art, so were they; each one H8389 resembled H1121 the children H4428 of a king.
H559 And he said [H8799]   H251 , They were my brethren H1121 , even the sons H517 of my mother H3068 : as the LORD H2416 liveth H3863 , if H2421 ye had saved them alive [H8689]   H2026 , I would not slay [H8804]   you.
H559 And he said [H8799]   H3500 unto Jether H1060 his firstborn H6965 , Up [H8798]   H2026 , and slay [H8798]   H5288 them. But the youth H8025 drew [H8804]   H2719 not his sword H3372 : for he feared [H8804]   H5288 , because he was yet a youth.
H2078 Then Zebah H6759 and Zalmunna H559 said [H8799]   H6965 , Rise [H8798]   H6293 thou, and fall [H8798]   H376 upon us: for as the man H1369 is, so is his strength H1439 . And Gideon H6965 arose [H8799]   H2026 , and slew [H8799]   H2078 Zebah H6759 and Zalmunna H3947 , and took away [H8799]   H7720 the ornaments H1581 that were on their camels H6677 ' necks.
H376 Then the men H3478 of Israel H559 said [H8799]   H1439 unto Gideon H4910 , Rule [H8798]   H1121 thou over us, both thou, and thy son H1121 , and thy son's H1121 son H3467 also: for thou hast delivered [H8689]   H3027 us from the hand H4080 of Midian.
H1439 And Gideon H559 said [H8799]   H4910 unto them, I will not rule [H8799]   H1121 over you, neither shall my son H4910 rule [H8799]   H3068 over you: the LORD H4910 shall rule [H8799]   over you.
H1439 And Gideon H559 said [H8799]   H7592 unto them, I would desire [H8799]   H7596 a request H5414 of you, that ye would give [H8798]   H376 me every man H5141 the earrings H7998 of his prey H2091 . (For they had golden H5141 earrings H3459 , because they were Ishmaelites.)
H559 And they answered [H8799]   H5414 , We will willingly [H8800]   H5414 give [H8799]   H6566 them . And they spread [H8799]   H8071 a garment H7993 , and did cast [H8686]   H376 therein every man H5141 the earrings H7998 of his prey.
H4948 And the weight H2091 of the golden H5141 earrings H7592 that he requested [H8804]   H505 was a thousand H7651 and seven H3967 hundred H2091 shekels of gold H7720 ; beside ornaments H5188 , and collars H713 , and purple H899 raiment H4428 that was on the kings H4080 of Midian H6060 , and beside the chains H1581 that were about their camels H6677 ' necks.
H1439 And Gideon H6213 made [H8799]   H646 an ephod H3322 thereof, and put [H8686]   H5892 it in his city H6084 , even in Ophrah H3478 : and all Israel H2181 went thither a whoring [H8799]   H310 after H4170 it: which thing became a snare H1439 unto Gideon H1004 , and to his house.
H4080 Thus was Midian H3665 subdued [H8735]   H6440 before H1121 the children H3478 of Israel H5375 , so that they lifted up [H8800]   H7218 their heads H3254 no more [H8804]   H776 . And the country H8252 was in quietness [H8799]   H705 forty H8141 years H3117 in the days H1439 of Gideon.
H3378 And Jerubbaal H1121 the son H3101 of Joash H3212 went [H8799]   H3427 and dwelt [H8799]   H1004 in his own house.
H1439 And Gideon H7657 had threescore and ten H1121 sons H3409 of his body H3318 begotten [H8802]   H7227 : for he had many H802 wives.
H6370 And his concubine H7927 that was in Shechem H3205 , she also bare [H8804]   H1121 him a son H8034 , whose name H7760 he called [H8799]   H40 Abimelech.
H1439 And Gideon H1121 the son H3101 of Joash H4191 died [H8799]   H2896 in a good H7872 old age H6912 , and was buried [H8735]   H6913 in the sepulchre H3101 of Joash H1 his father H6084 , in Ophrah H33 of the Abiezrites.
H1439 And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon H4191 was dead [H8804]   H1121 , that the children H3478 of Israel H7725 turned again [H8799]   H2181 , and went a whoring [H8799]   H310 after H1168 Baalim H7760 , and made [H8799]   H1170 Baalberith H430 their god.
H1121 And the children H3478 of Israel H2142 remembered [H8804]   H3068 not the LORD H430 their God H5337 , who had delivered [H8688]   H3027 them out of the hands H341 of all their enemies [H8802]   H5439 on every side:
H6213 Neither shewed [H8804]   H2617 they kindness H1004 to the house H3378 of Jerubbaal H1439 , namely, Gideon H2896 , according to all the goodness H6213 which he had shewed [H8804]   H3478 unto Israel.
ERV(i) 1 And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with Midian? And they did chide with him sharply. 2 And he said unto them, What have I now done in comparison of you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer? 3 God hath delivered into your hand the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison of you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that. 4 And Gideon came to Jordan, [and] passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing. 5 And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they be faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian. 6 And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thine army? 7 And Gideon said: Therefore when the LORD hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers. 8 And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them in like manner: and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered. 9 And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower. 10 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the host of the children of the east: for there fell an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword. 11 And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host; for the host was secure. 12 And Zebah and Zalmunna fled; and he pursued after them; and he took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host. 13 And Gideon the son of Joash returned from the battle from the ascent of Heres. 14 And he caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and inquired of him: and he described for him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, seventy and seven men. 15 And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, concerning whom ye did taunt me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary? 16 And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth. 17 And he brake down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city. 18 Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king. 19 And he said, They were my brethren, the sons of my mother: as the LORD liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you. 20 And he said unto Jether his firstborn, Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword: for he feared, because he was yet a youth. 21 Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took the crescents that were on their camels’ necks. 22 Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son also: for thou hast saved us out of the hand of Midian. 23 And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the LORD shall rule over you. 24 And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his spoil. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.) 25 And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his spoil. 26 And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred [shekels] of gold; beside the crescents, and the pendants, and the purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels’ necks. 27 And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went a whoring after it there: and it became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house. 28 So Midian was subdued before the children of Israel, and they lifted up their heads no more. And the land had rest forty years in the days of Gideon. 29 And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house. 30 And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives. 31 And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, and he called his name Abimelech. 32 And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites. 33 And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after the Baalim, and made Baal-berith their god. 34 And the children of Israel remembered not the LORD their God, who had delivered them out of the hand of all their enemies on every side: 35 neither shewed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, [who is] Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shewed unto Israel.
