NSB(i) 20 Absalom turned to Ahithophel and said: »Give us your advice! What should we do?« 21 Ahithophel answered: »Some of your father’s wives were left here to take care of the palace. You should have sex with them. Then everyone will find out that you have publicly disgraced your father. This will make you and your followers even more powerful.« 22 They pitched a tent for Absalom on the palace roof. There in the sight of everyone Absalom went in and had intercourse with his father’s concubines. 23 Any advice that Ahithophel gave in those days was accepted as though it were the very word of God. David and Absalom followed it. 17 1 Later Ahithophel said to Absalom: »Let me choose twelve thousand men. Tonight I will set out after David. 2 »I will attack him while he is tired and discouraged. He will be frightened! All his men will run away. I will kill only the king. 3 »Then I will bring back all his men to you. It will be like a bride returning to her husband. Kill one man and the rest of the people return safely.« 4 This seemed like good advice to Absalom and all the Israelite leaders.
ISV(i) 20 Ahithophel Counsels AbsalomSo Absalom asked Ahithophel, “What’s your advice? What should we do?”
21 Ahithophel responded, “Go inside and have sex with your father’s mistresses, whom he left to keep the palace in order. Then everyone in Israel will hear how your father has come to hate you and everyone who has joined you will be emboldened to act.” 22 So they erected a tent for Absalom on the palace roof and Absalom went in and had sex with his father’s mistresses right in front of all Israel.
23 Ahithophel Tries to Crush David’s SupportersNow Ahithophel’s advice that he provided at that time was being compared to one who inquired of God, so highly regarded was Ahithophel’s counsel by both David and Absalom. 17 1 “Give me 12,000 men! I’ll leave tonight and pursue David,” Ahithophel advised Absalom. 2 “I’ll catch him while he is still tired and weak. I’ll frighten him so all his people with him desert him. But I’ll only kill the king. 3 Then I’ll bring everybody else back to you. When the man you’re looking for is dead, all the rest of the people will return quietly.”
4 Even though this plan seemed like a good idea to Absalom and to all of the elders of Israel,
LEB(i) 20 Then Absalom said to Ahithophel, "Give your advice. What shall we do?" 21 And Ahithophel said to Absalom, "Go to the concubines of your father whom he left behind to watch over the house, then all of Israel will hear that you made yourself odious to your father, and ⌊all of your followers will be motivated⌋!"* 22 Then they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof, and he went in to the concubines of his father before the eyes of all Israel. 23 The counsel that Ahithophel gave in those days was regarded as when a man* inquired of the word of God, so all the counsel of Ahithophel was esteemed both by David and by Absalom. 17 1 Then Ahithophel said to Absalom, "Please let me choose twelve thousand men, and I will set out and pursue after David ⌊tonight⌋.* 2 I will come upon him while he is weary and ⌊weak⌋.* I will startle him, and all of the people who are with him will flee.
